2010 Ford Explorer sport trac problems
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac (also shortened to Ford Sport Trac) is a pickup truck that was manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company for the North American market. The first mid-sized pickup truck produced by Ford, the Sport Trac was marketed from the 2001 to the 2010 model years (skipping the 2006 model year). Sized between the Ranger (whose crew cab variants were sold outside of North America) and the F-150, the Sport Trac largely competed against crew-cab variants of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.
Produced over two generations, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac shared its chassis and much of its body from the Ford Explorer SUV (with the pickup truck bed designed specifically for the model line). All production was sourced from the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky (taking the place of the Ford Ranger).
As Ford developed the fifth-generation Ford Explorer as a unibody crossover for the 2011 model year, the Sport Trac was phased out of the model line, with production ending in October 2010. Closely matching the Sport Trac in size, the fourth-generation Ford Ranger serves the same market function in its SuperCrew four-door crew cab configuration.

Common 2010 Ford Explorer sport trac problems
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac, produced from 2001 to 2010, is known for several common problems that have been reported by owners. Here are some of the most prominent issues:
- Overtightened Steering Bolts Can Fracture: In some cases, overtightening on steering assembly bolts has caused them to fracture, leading to loss of control of the vehicle and possible accidents.
- Speed Control Deactivation Switch Can Catch Fire: Some speed control deactivation switches have been reported to overheat, smoke, burn, and even cause a fire due to an internal leak.
- Speed Control Cable Can Bind Up: The casing over the speed control cable can stretch and bind up the cable, requiring additional braking power to disengage the bind-up. This issue was most prominent in the 2004 model.
- Transmission Issues: Several transmission issues have been reported, including transmission leaks, hesitation, slipping, and failure. These problems are often linked to a bolt that was not tightened enough in the factory, causing a transmission leak that can lead to fire, loss of power, or transmission failure.
- Radiator Leaking Coolant: The 2007 model is particularly prone to radiator leaks, with 11 complaints about coolant leaking in the 2007 Explorer Sport Trac.
- Hard Shifting: The 2007 model also has 7 complaints about hard shifting, which can be a sign of transmission problems or other issues with the drivetrain.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems, such as broken timing chain adjusters, constant check engine light, and chirping/rubber belt noise, have been reported in the 2001, 2005, and 2007 models. These issues can be dangerous and costly to repair.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission failure is a common issue in the Sport Trac, with the 2002 and 2007 models being particularly prone to this problem. Transmission failure can lead to difficult shifting, slipping transmission, and other issues that can be costly to repair.
- Electrical Troubles: Electrical issues, such as haywire gauges, inaccurate fuel gauges, and a car that dies while driving, have been reported in the Sport Trac. These issues can be an inconvenience and may require costly repairs.
In summary, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac has several common problems that have been reported by owners, including issues with head restraints, steering bolts, speed control deactivation switches, speed control cables, transmission, radiator leaks, hard shifting, engine, and electrical troubles. These issues can be costly to repair and may affect the safety and reliability of the vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
- VIN: 1FMEU3BE8AU
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My vehicle's engine has on a number of occasions simply quit running. The engine has died while underway, and also when resuming from a stop. It will or has to this point cranked without problems each time this has happened. I've just been fortunate it hasn't quit while I'm in a driving situation that involves another vehicle in the position to crash into me as I'm restarting the engine. There is not a particular situation I can point to where it does this more. The engine has less than 120K miles and maintence is routine. OBD by certified mechanics has not shown any defective readings. I've also check on-line and found it's not just my vehicle, but others in different years are doing the same thing. There's nothing on the Ford website that addresses this issue.

The contact had the seat track replaced by an independent mechanic; however, the failure returned soon after repair. The contact then took the vehicle to a local dealer where he was given an estimate for the repair of another seat track. The dealer also informed him that they could not guarantee that the repair would fix the failure. The contact was then referred to NHTSA for assistance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-01
- VIN: 1FMEU5BE9AU
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I BOUGHT THE TRUCK NEW IN MAY 2010. I HAD ALL THE SCHEDULED DEALER MAINTENANCE COMPLETED AS SCHEDULED AND THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN OFF ROAD. THE FOUR WHEEL DRIVE HAS BEEN ENGAGED TWICE, AND THE MAJORITY OF THE MILES HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY. THIRTY MILES FROM FT LEONARD WOOD THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN SLIPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS SLUGGISH WHEN ACCELERATING FROM A STOPPED POSITION CAUSING A HAZARD IN CITY DRIVING OR MERGING ONTO THE INTERSTATE. THE VIBRATION INCREASED ON THE HIGHWAY AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO STEER. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY DESTINATION, I DROPPED IT AT THE DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY FOR SERVICE. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE CALLED AND INFORMED TWO MAINTENANCE LIGHTS WERE ON FOR ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION SERVICE. I AGREED TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE. THE DEALERSHIP CALLED LATER THAT DAY AND INFORMED ME I NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION BUT COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHAT THE CODES MEANT OR THE COST OF REPAIR. I ASKED FOR CLARIFICATION, BUT NO ONE EVER GOT BACK TO ME WITH AN UPDATE. I RECEIVED A TEXT MY TRUCK WAS READY FOR PICK UP, BUT THE STAFF COULD NOT EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM. I AM NOW AT DAY SEVEN AND AFTER COUNTLESS PHONE CALLS TO THE DEALERSHIP AND FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE. NO ONE CAN EXPLAIN THE ISSUE OR OFFER ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY! MY QUESTIONS. WHY IS THE TRANSMISSION SHOT AFTER ONLY 37,000 MILES? IF IT IS REPLACED, WHAT REASSURANCE DO I HAVE THIS PROBLEM WILL NOT REOCCUR IN ANOTHER 37,000 MILES? IS THERE ASSISTANCE FOR A DRIVE TRAIN COMPONENT REPLACEMENT THAT IS SUPPOSED TO LAST 100,000 MILES AND LIKELY DEFECTIVE? WHY IS THIS A WARRANTY ISSUE AND NOT A QUALITY ISSUE? THE STAFF AT THE FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER TRY TO KEEP BOUNCING BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND REFUSE TO PUT ME IN CONTACT WITH THE REGIONAL MANAGER OR SUPERVISION STAFF.
WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-03-08
- VIN: 1FMEU2D89AU
- Components: WHEELS
- Summary: I REPLACED THE ORIGINAL OEM PIRELLI TIRES IN DECEMBER 2015 WHEN THE VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 36,000 MILES ON IT. THEY WERE REPLACED WITH THE SAME BRAND, SIZE AND STYLE OF PIRELLI TIRES. ON MARCH 8, 2016 AT APPROX. 42,000 MILES I RETURNED TO THE TIRE SHOP TO HAVE THE TIRES REBALANCED AFTER NOTICING SOME BUMPINESS. THE TIRE SHOP DISCOVERED THAT IN TWO OF THE TIRES THE STEEL BAND WHICH HELD THE TPMS SENSOR IN PLACE HAD DISINTEGRATED AND WAS FREE FLOATING IN THE TIRE AND HAD RUINED THE INNER LINERS IN THE TIRES MAKING THEM EXTREMELY UNSAFE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL FORD DEALER AND INQUIRED ABOUT POSSIBLE RECALLS AND/OR BULLETINS INVOLVING THE STEEL BANDS USED ON THE TPMS. FORD DENIED ANY PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH THE BANDS HOWEVER THEY DID NOTE THAT FORD HAD QUIT USING THE STEEL BANDS AFTER ONLY USING THEM A SHORT WHILE. I FEEL FORD MOTOR COMPANY OWES ME THE $542.72 I AM OUT FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRES AND SENSORS I HAD TO REPLACE TO REMEDY A VERY UNSAFE SITUTATION. I REPLACE THE BANDS AND SENSORS IN THE OTHER TWO TIRES AS WELL WITH A REPLACEMENT TYPE WHICH DOESN'T INVOLVE STEEL BANDS. FORD SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL NOTICE IMMEDIATELY TO REMEDY AN UNSAFE TPMS BAND SYSTEM IMMEDIATELY WHICH COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A CATASTROPHIC ACCIDENT IF THE SITUTATION HAD NOT BEEN DISCOVERED BY THE TIRE SHOP. I'M ENCLOSING A COPY OF MY EXPENSES AND A PICTURE OF THE BROKEN BANDS WHICH WERE DISCOVERED WITHIN MY TIRES.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-11-10
- VIN: 1FMEU5BE6AU
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASE THIS USED VEHICLE AND WHILE COMING TO A STOP OR APPLYING THE BRAKE THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED INSTANTLY AT THE SAME TIME BRAKE PEDAL WAS PUSHED. I WAS WEARING BOOTS AT THE TIME AND THE TOE OF THE BOOT DOES STICK OUT FURTHER THEN MY SLIP ON SHOES. THIS HAPPEN TWICE BOTH TIMES WHILE WEARING BOOTS. I TRIED TO OBSERVE WHAT MAY BE THE CAUSE ALTHOUGH I WAS APPROACHING STOPPED VEHICLES AT THE TIME. I RECREATED THE MOVEMENT WHILE PARKED IN NEUTRAL, ENGINE RUNNING AND WEARING BOOTS. THE SAME THING HAPPEN. WHAT HAPPENS IS THE TOE OF MY BOOTS PUSH THE ACCELERATOR AS I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL AND IT MOVED DOWN TOWARD THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. IT APPEARS TO BE A DESIGN ISSUE AS THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDAL ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE SAME LEVEL. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHOULD BE FURTHER DOWN AND AWAY FROM THE BREAK PEDAL. ALL IS WELL IF THE CENTER OF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED WITH SHOES IN VERTICAL POSITION ALTHOUGH IN AND EMERGENCY IT COULD BE CONTACTED OFF CENTER. *TR
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-04-08
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: ISSUE IS THAT WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES AND I DO NOT HAVE MY FOOT SUFFICIENTLY IN THE CENTER OR TO THE LEFT OF THE BRAKE PEDAL IT DEPRESS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IN FULLY DEPRESSED. THIS CAUSES ACCELERATION OF THE ENGINE AND POSSIBLE FORWARD OR REWARD MOVEMENT UNTIL I COMPREHEND WHAT IS GOING ON AND REMOVE MY FOOT. I HAVE NEVER HAD THIS CONCERN WITH ANY VEHICLE I HAVE OWNED OVER THE YEARS. IT APPEARS THAT THE GAS PEDAL IS TOO CLOSE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL OR THE BRAKE PEDAL REQUIRES TOO MUCH DEPRESSION TO FULLY ENGAGE BRAKES. ISSUE IS EXACERBATED WHEN I WEAR SPORT SHOES WHICH HAVE A LARGER FOOT PRINT. *TR
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-03-27
- VIN: 1FMEU3BE4AU
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: THE AIRBAG SENSOR LIGHT HAS BEEN ILLUMINATING INTERMITTENTLY FOR A FEW MONTHS. AT FIRST, ONLY WHEN THE TEMPS DROPPED BELOW FREEZING BUT RECENTLY WITHOUT ANY PRELUDE. MANY PEOPLE WOULD RATHER RISK DYING IN A FIERY CRASH THAN GO TO A DEALER, BUT I DECIDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE IN TODAY. THE DEALER SAYS 2 AIRBAG SENSORS ON THE PASSENGER SEAT ARE BAD, WHICH REQUIRES A REPLACEMENT OF THE SEAT TRACK AT A COST OF $1,700. THE SERVICE TECH OPINED THAT THIS HAPPENED BECAUSE THE PASSENGER SEAT ISN'T SAT IN REGULARLY. THE DEALER SAYS THE VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY, SO ITS MY PROBLEM. I BELIEVE THIS FORD MOTOR COMPANY'S DESIGN FLAW AND THEY SHOULD FIX THIS PROBLEM AT ITS EXPENSE. *TR
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-07-15
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: RADIATOR LEAKING COOLANT INTERMITTENTLY. NOTICED THAT THE RADIATOR WAS LEAKING AT THE BOTTOM, ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. AFTER INSPECTING THE PROBLEM I DETERMINED THAT THE RADIATOR WAS LEAKING FROM THE TOP. I HAD MY MECHANIC LOOK AT IT BUT WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE LEAK (THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE RADIATOR CAP). THE RADIATOR DOES NOT LEAK CONSTANTLY, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. THIS SEEM TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THESE VEHICLES. PLEASE ISSUE A RECALL. *TR

ON 05/19/2011 IT DID IT AGAIN IN THE FAST LANE OF THE FREEWAY AND WENT TO TWO DEALERS WHO SAID THEY CAN'T "REPLICATE" THE PROBLEM SO THEY CAN'T JUST TRY FIXING EVERYTHING IT COULD BE. THE DEALER REFUSES TO STAND BEHIND THE PRODUCT HE SOLD. HE SAID," HE COULDN'T HELP THAT FORD MADE A BAD CAR". I traded in my 2004 F-150 for a 2008 Limited Sport Trac, V8, 4X4, with limited chrome and electronics. I must say, Ford has done an excellent job of putting this vehicle together. The power is great and available whenever you need it. I am very happy with my mileage compared to my F-150 V8 5.4, as I am getting 22mph on the highway. The ride is very smooth and comfortable. If you're looking for something like this, no other manufacturer can even come close to the quality and comfort of the Sport Trac.
-
The only issues I have with this vehicle are the noisy engine and poor fuel mileage for a six-cylinder. For these reasons, I won't be keeping it for long. I should have gone for a V8. Additionally, the tonneau cover leaks.
-
I recently purchased the last 2008 Adrenalin that my dealer had, and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed! It came with every option available, Colorado Red paint, and 20'' wheels. Even with only 1000 miles on it, I'm already in love with the ride and handling of this truck. It may be a little underpowered, even with the V8 (but then again, my other car is a Z28 with an LT1), and it looks faster than it actually is. Nonetheless, it's a great looking truck that has everyone asking, 'What model is that? Did it come new like that?' It has a smooth ride and drive, and I'm getting decent mileage from a 4500lb truck (16.9 mpg so far). At 46, I've had a lot of cars, and this one is definitely up there on my list.
-
Hi there! That's a great vehicle you have!
-
I got a fantastic deal on the Adrenalin model during Christmas. I have been a loyal Acura customer since 1989, but unfortunately, they were not motivated to sell me a vehicle. However, this truck provides a tremendous sense of security in winter driving situations and we enjoy sitting higher when driving. The 6-speed transmission is smooth and the V8 is very flexible. Compared to the Chevy Silverado I rented last year for a weekend, the independent rear suspension gives a much more impressive ride over rough roads. Fuel economy so far is acceptable at 15-20 mpg in winter driving, but I'm expecting a seasonal improvement to 20-26 mpg when the weather warms up, just like my Acura TL does. We immensely enjoy driving this truck and recommend it to anyone looking for style, power, and tremendous versatility. Adding sunny days and a favourite recreational activity would make it even better. It's definitely a keeper!

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that finding a drive shaft for the 2 wheel drive with the 4.0 can be quite a challenge. Unfortunately, they can't be rebuilt and Ford no longer has them in stock. However, after 4 weeks of searching, I was finally able to locate one in a warehouse in Michigan for $725.00. It's definitely not cheap, but at least it's available if you ever need it. Take care!

I was wondering what Ford was thinking with their latest truck model. As someone who has been in the industry for a while, I was disappointed with the level of comfort it provided. Although it was provided as a work vehicle, I found it uncomfortable to ride in. In comparison, the YukonXL I previously used was much more comfortable and had a smoother ride. I believe that even though the SUV is smaller, it should still have a well-designed and comfortable seat. Additionally, the leather used in the truck seemed cheap and the interior looked worn out. I understand why some people may feel that the big three car manufacturers build cheap cars. Although the truck was not cheap, it felt like it was built that way. The fit and finish of the truck was also not up to my expectations. I hope that Ford can improve their future models.
