Rivian R1s 2022 problems
The Rivian R1S is an all-electric full-size off-road SUV manufactured by Rivian. Customer deliveries started in 2022. The car took nearly 10 years to develop. Depending on the configuration, it has either two or four electric motors.
Design
It is designed to hold seven passengers and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in 3 seconds, due to its 835 hp (623 kW; 847 PS) combined output power. It shares 91% of its components with the Rivian R1T. Rivian's flat, low center of gravity chassis makes it an "electric vehicle skateboard". The vehicle is equipped for semi-autonomous driving according to level 3 and designed for road traffic and off-road driving.
Powertrain
As announced in 2018, the R1S was planned to be offered with three different traction battery capacities and power outputs; all planned versions included four traction motors, in which each wheel is driven by an independent traction motor, allowing full-time all-wheel drive with torque vectoring. The quad-motor version (QM) uses electric traction motors developed by Robert Bosch GmbH, but these are carried on the vehicle's frame; the R1S does not use wheel hub motors like the Lordstown Endurance. As delivered in 2022, the QM R1S has a combined output of 835 hp (623 kW) and 908 lb⋅ft (1,231 N⋅m), split 415 / 420 hp (309 / 313 kW) and 413 / 495 lb⋅ft (560 / 671 N⋅m) front/rear.
Rivian has announced plans to reduce prices by offering dual-motor (DM) versions starting in 2024, with independent traction motors for the front and rear axles, using "Enduro" motors developed by Rivian for the EDV. DM versions will be offered with two different battery capacities (standard and large) for the R1S, with slightly greater corresponding range as the weight and efficiency should improve with two motors. Maximum output of the dual-motor version is expected to be >600 hp (450 kW) and >600 lb⋅ft (810 N⋅m), which is a decrease from the quad-motor version; a "Performance Dual Motor" (PDM) option was added in April 2023, which raises output to approximately 700 hp (520 kW) through a software modification. Production of the "Enduro" motor drive units began in February 2023; most have been used to ramp up EDV production, but DM R1S SUVs with the Large battery pack were first delivered to customers in May 2023.
The extended range ("Max Pack") battery has been delayed until 2023. In addition, the smaller ("Standard") battery is not scheduled to be delivered until 2024; the Standard battery will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry to reduce costs by eliminating nickel and cobalt.

Common Rivian R1s 2022 problems
The 2022 Rivian R1S, an all-electric SUV, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues range from handling and electrical problems to recalls and reliability concerns.
- Handling and Oversteering Issues: The 2022 Rivian R1S has been reported to have serious handling and oversteering issues, particularly at higher speeds. Instances of fishtailing have been documented, which can be detrimental to the safety of passengers and potentially fatal. This issue has been reported to Rivian, but the company has not yet provided a response.
- Reliability Concerns: The 2022 Rivian R1S is expected to be less reliable than other new cars, based on limited data from the R1S and the Rivian brand scores.
- Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported electrical issues, such as a "vampire" battery drain problem, where the vehicle's battery drains even when the vehicle is turned off.
- Recalls: The 2022 Rivian R1S has had at least two recalls, one involving improperly secured front seat belt anchors and another related to a steering knuckle that could separate from the control arm. These issues were quickly addressed by Rivian, but they highlight the potential for first-generation vehicle issues.
In summary, the 2022 Rivian R1S has faced several common problems, including auto-hold and park malfunctions, handling and oversteering issues, reliability concerns, electrical problems, and recalls. While some issues have been addressed through recalls and software updates, others remain unresolved, and potential buyers should be aware of these potential problems.
What is the problem with the rivian R1S?

Why is Rivian struggling?
Rivian lost tens of thousands of dollars per vehicle last year as it struggled to ramp up production and generate demand beyond its exuberant first wave of buyers. Rivian shares have lost 53% so far this year, hurt by disappointing deliveries and its projection in February that production growth in 2024 would be flat.
Are Rivian suvs reliable?
The reliability of the Rivian is notably poor.
How long does rivian R1S battery last?
Rivian estimates the Standard battery's range at 270 miles, versus the 352-mile range estimate for the Large pack and the 410-mile EPA estimate for the Max battery.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
- VIN: 7PDSGABL7NN
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: Passenger airbag sensor does not detect passenger reliably. My 13 year old son and my wife both have issues. They are both over 120 lbs, so I think they should trigger the sensor. I have had it serviced for this issue, but it did not fix the problem. It also will detect a person in the seat during a drive and turn off later in that same trip without stopping the car. It seems to me that the sensor needs to be more sensitive. And, once it detects a person in the seat, it should keep the airbag on until the car is stopped and door opened. My wife does not feel safe in the car as it stands now.
AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-30
- VIN: 7PDSGABL0NN
- Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
- Summary: When I am driving, my passenger sometimes does not trigger the airbag to activate. Depending on how they are sitting, many times the passenger airbag is set to "off" because it can not detect a passenger. The Rivian service center has investigated and mentioned there is no problem and that the passenger needs to sit more upright, but this still seems like a safety issue if we are driving and fail to notice that the passenger airbag is not activated
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
- Number Of Injuries: 2
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 7PDSGABLXNN
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: On Monday, December 11, 2023 Myself, my girlfriend, and our two dogs were headed across the I-182 bridge coming out of Pasco, WA to Richland, WA. We were in the far left or center lane (I am not sure which). The highway is three lanes each way. We were at highway speed (the speed limit is 70 mph). About ¾ of the way across the bridge, the vehicle felt like all 4 wheels locked. The vehicle then skidded, turned 90 degree towards the concrete bridge barrier. We struck the bridge barrier nearly head on. The vehicle then rotated off the barrier and landed upright in the far right lane. Airbags fully deployed. There were numerous witnesses who reported seeing what looked like the vehicle’s wheels lock and then the events as described. No other cars were impacted. About 20 minutes prior to the crash I commented that the vehicle alignment was off. I had to keep the wheel at 10:00 or 11:00 for the vehicle to travel straight. I found that odd as the vehicle alignment was fine prior to that. Everyone walked away from the accident although both us were injured.
