ford logo

The Ford EcoSport (pronounced Eh-koh-sport) is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Ford between 2003 and 2023.

The first-generation model was developed and built in Brazil by Ford Brazil since 2003, at the Camaçari plant. The second-generation model was launched in 2012, which was assembled in factories in India, Thailand, Russia and Romania. The vehicle entered the North American market for the first time in 2018, until its discontinuation after the 2022 model year. Throughout its existence, the EcoSport shares its platform with the Fiesta.

First generation (BV226; 2003)

The first generation EcoSport was designed by Ford Brazil Development Center under the program code BV226, and the codename "Amazon Project". It is based on the European Fiesta and Fusion MPV, sharing the same Ford B3 platform.

The EcoSport became one of Ford's best-seller models in Brazil, consistently appearing on the twenty best selling vehicles. It was also popular in Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Its main competitors were the Fiat Palio Adventure and Volkswagen CrossFox. In 2011, cumulative sales reached 700,000.

Common 2019 Ford Ecosport problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 2019 Ford EcoSport, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Oil Pump Failure:
    • The turbocharged 1.0-liter engine in the EcoSport has experienced oil pump failures, leading to total engine failure. This issue is more prevalent in the 2018 and 2019 models due to belt-driven oil pumps.
    • Solution: Ford issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) addressing the oil pump belt tensioner issue. Vehicles produced after April 2019 have a revised tensioner to prevent this problem. Regular inspection of the belt tensioner and oil pump is recommended to avoid engine damage.
  2. Gearbox Problem:
    • Older second-generation Ford EcoSports equipped with PowerShift (DCT) Dual-Clutch gearboxes have been prone to severe breakdowns, causing transmission issues like shearing or jolting.
    • Solution: In 2018, Ford upgraded to a more reliable automatic gearbox using a torque converter. If experiencing gearbox problems, it may require transmission replacement.
  3. Doors Won't Lock:
    • Some owners have reported issues with EcoSport doors not locking, especially in wet conditions or cold weather, which can range from inconvenient to unsafe.
    • Solution: Potential causes include faulty lock actuators, blown fuses, or bad lock relay switches. Addressing these issues promptly is crucial for safety and security.
  4. Low MPG:
    • The EcoSport has been criticized for poor gas mileage, affecting the overall efficiency of the vehicle.
    • Solution: Improving fuel efficiency may involve regular maintenance, checking tire pressure, and driving habits to optimize mileage.
  5. Jerky Transmission:
    • Owners have complained about the EcoSport's transmission being jerky, particularly during acceleration from a stop, leading to gear change issues.
    • Solution: Possible causes include low transmission fluid, faulty solenoids, or worn transmission bands. In severe cases, transmission replacement may be necessary.
  6. Noisy/Grinding Brake Pads:
    • Several owners have reported hearing grinding noises from the EcoSport brakes, especially common in the 2018 model, potentially due to low-quality or damaged brake pads and worn brake rotors.
    • Solution: Addressing noisy brake pads may involve replacing damaged components to ensure safe and quiet braking performance.

These common problems with the 2019 Ford EcoSport highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt repairs, and awareness of potential issues to ensure a safe and reliable driving experience.

What is the common problem of Ford EcoSport?

Overheating Issues: A frequent complaint among Ford EcoSport owners is overheating. This can stem from issues like a malfunctioning thermostat, radiator problems, or a faulty water pump. Timely attention is crucial to prevent engine damage.

What is the engine problem with the 2019 Ford EcoSport?

The problem has to do with a faulty part within the engine's oil pump, which is belt-driven. The oil pump's drive belt tensioner arm may fracture and cause the engine to lose oil pressure. If this happens, it could cause severe engine damage, loss of power while driving, and loss of power braking.

What is the disadvantage of EcoSport?

The Ford Ecosport doesn't have the most spacious cabin in its segment and the front seats are a bit narrow. It isn't too wide as well so for three passengers at the rear will be a squeeze.

Why did Ford discontinue the EcoSport?

Ford has discontinued the EcoSport, leaving a void for a small crossover. The EcoSport was a popular vehicle for its fans. It was affordable, efficient, and versatile. But its low sales numbers meant that Ford had to make the difficult decision to discontinue it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-19
  • VIN: MAJ3S2GE6KC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: How long is Ford going to get away with no remedy for this? They have been aware of this issue for years. They definitely knew about it when they sold vehicle to me. Of course I wasn't informed by dealer. Now I've had to limit driving for fear mine will succumb to this problem. Vehicle is coming up on 60,000 miles, which is when problem arises in many cases. What is my recourse.? Just stuck paying $35,000 for a vehicle I was misled into purchasing? Got three more years paying $500 a month for car I'm afraid to drive. Check engine light is on more than off. Ford should be accountable. For amount they make, to be knowingly selling a defective product is shameful. Please give this recall the attention it deserves.Stop allowing Ford to ignore whatever fix it is going to take. Which seems is going to be replacing engine. Another inferior engine, no doubt. Hell owners will be still stuck with product that should have been remedied many, many years ago. This wet belt design doesn't last. Repair is quite costly. Something Ford is well aware of. They still keep right on selling cars with these motors they know are crap. Something should have been done about this long time ago, in my opinion.
