The Ford Super Duty (also known as the Ford F-Series Super Duty) is a series of heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 1999 model year. Slotted above the consumer-oriented Ford F-150, the Super Duty trucks are an expansion of the Ford F-Series range, from F-250 to the F-600. The F-250 through F-450 are offered as pickup trucks, while the F-350 through F-600 are offered as chassis cabs.

Rather than adapting the lighter-duty F-150 truck for heavier use, Super Duty trucks have been designed as a dedicated variant of the Ford F-Series. The heavier-duty chassis components allow for heavier payloads and towing capabilities. With a GVWR over 8,500 lb (3,900 kg), Super Duty pickups are Class 2 and 3 trucks, while chassis-cab trucks are offered in Classes 3, 4, 5, and 6. The model line also offers Ford Power Stroke V8 diesel engines as an option.

Ford also offers a medium-duty version of the F-Series (F-650 and F-750), which is sometimes branded as the Super Duty, but is another chassis variant. The Super Duty pickup truck also served as the basis for the Ford Excursion full-sized SUV.

The Super Duty trucks and chassis-cabs are assembled at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky, and at Ohio Assembly in Avon Lake, Ohio. Prior to 2016, medium-duty trucks were assembled in Mexico under the Blue Diamond Truck joint venture with Navistar International.

What is the best year for a Ford F-450?

The Best Model Years to Buy a Ford F-450 Super Duty

With the 2022, you would only pay, on average, 100% of the price as new, with 100% of the vehicle's useful life remaining. The 2021 and 2019 model years are also attractive years for the F-450 Super Duty, and provide a relatively good value.

What is the difference between 2019 and 2020 F-450?

The 2020 Ford F450 also received a boost to its features and technology compared to the 2019 model year. A new engine option, an updated infotainment system, extended towing technology, and an upgraded transmission are only the beginning of what's changed in the 2020 model year.

Which is better F-350 vs F-450?

If the majority of miles you put on your truck involve very heavy towing or hauling, the 450 is the way to go. Towing will be much more pleasant, and the truck will handle much better loaded. Any other case, and I'd go F350 SRW if you want to do some moderately heavy towing and hauling and also want a pleasant daily.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-04-08
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DTXKE
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: Truck has experienced multiple occasions of "death wobble" since purchase. Excessive unexplained tire wear on the passenger front tire. On second tire on passenger front. Have 81k miles on truck and all other tires are wearing normal. Have had truck in alignment twice with no issues showing with alignment, wheels have been balanced. Ford service tech contacted Ford engineer and told me to increase air pressure to 100psi on front tires, I questioned this since door tag states 90psi. Still same issues, all recalls have been done. Passenger front tire is almost bald and need to purchase new tires at $400 plus, seems stupid to put new tires on and not resolve issue. I have worked with Ford dealership, two independent tire stores, Continental tire engineer, and have asked many mechanics about this with no answers. The other issue is the power tailgate will open on its own. This has occurred twice while driving. Once is while I was pulling fifth wheel and tailgate opened. Spilling out a 70 qt cooler carrying 40+ water bottles and a stand for my grill. I have no knowledge at what time this happened during trip, no dash indicator or warning. The second time this happened is we were towing a horse trailer and it opened. The only warning was when we made a turn and the trailer wheel jack pinched against the tailgate and bent both the tailgate and trailer jack. Ford had a recall on tailgate which was performed prior to these incidents. Wire harness was replaced in between events at Ford dealership. Dealership answer now is to disable rear button to open tailgate, also since tailgate is bent it will bind and not open sometimes. I think it's funny that there is a warning light for the hood if unlatched, and prior to disabling rear button I had to push the door lock button to open tailgate. To me it's a design issue because the female connector faces up and plugs into male connector, where moisture can get in. All these are safety issues putting me and others in danger.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-27
  • VIN: 1FT8W4DTXKE
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: 30k miles on truck and have had persisting issues with a shaking front end / steering wheel while driving at speed. What many folks refer to as “death wobble”. Dealer has replaced drag link and steering stabilizer and I replaced tires prematurely out of my own pocket, none of which have solved the issue. Ford needs to figure this out. I’ve owned 2 other superduty trucks and they have all had it to some extent. Issue causes uncontrolled shaking in steering wheel of varying intensities. Extremely dangerous when it’s happened to me on the highway sending you into another lane.

2021-02-25
  • Manufacturer: Life Line Emergency Vehicles
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Life Line Emergency Vehicles (Life Line) is recalling one 2020 Ford F450 vehicle and one 2017 Navistar Durastar vehicle, equipped with 7x9 combination LED Stop-Tail-Turn reverse lights. The lights may be too bright, exceeding the maximum light output allowed which may adversely affect the vision of drivers. As such, these lamps fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
  • Consequence: The excessive brightness may affect the vision of other drivers, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: ECCO will provide a filter kit that will ensure the lights perform in the correct photometric intensity ranges, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 15, 2021. Owners may contact Life Line customer service at 1-563-578-3317 ext. 132.

Also included are certain 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with rear outboard seats and manual seat back recliner mechanisms. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) numbers 202, "Head Restraints" and 207, "Seating Systems."
  • Consequence: A seat back with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the seat structure and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 21, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C07.

  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will disable the block heater cable, free of charge. Once parts are available, Dealers will replace the engine block heater cable, free of charge.
