Ford Ecosport problems

ford logo

The Ford EcoSport (pronounced Eh-koh-sport) is a subcompact crossover SUV (B-segment) manufactured by Ford between 2003 and 2023.

The first-generation model was developed and built in Brazil by Ford Brazil since 2003, at the Camaçari plant. The second-generation model was launched in 2012, which was assembled in factories in India, Thailand, Russia and Romania. The vehicle entered the North American market for the first time in 2018, until its discontinuation after the 2022 model year. Throughout its existence, the EcoSport shares its platform with the Fiesta.

First generation (BV226; 2003)

The first generation EcoSport was designed by Ford Brazil Development Center under the program code BV226, and the codename "Amazon Project". It is based on the European Fiesta and Fusion MPV, sharing the same Ford B3 platform.

The EcoSport became one of Ford's best-seller models in Brazil, consistently appearing on the twenty best selling vehicles. It was also popular in Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Its main competitors were the Fiat Palio Adventure and Volkswagen CrossFox. In 2011, cumulative sales reached 700,000.

Common Ford Ecosport problems

The Ford EcoSport has been known to have several common problems that owners have reported over the years. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the oil pump in the 1.0-liter turbo engine, which can fail and result in complete engine failure.

Another common problem with the EcoSport is the gearbox. The PowerShift (DCT) Dual-Clutch gearboxes in older second-generation Ford EcoSports were prone to severe breakdowns, particularly between 2012 and 2017. Ford upgraded all markets to a new, more reliable automatic gearbox using a torque converter in 2018. However, transmission problems, such as shuddering and jerking, delayed shifts, gear slipping, and grinding noise, have been reported in both manual and automatic transmissions of the 2021 EcoSport.

The electrical system is another area where the EcoSport has faced issues. Many owners have reported problems with the battery draining quickly, even when the vehicle is not in use, leading to problems starting the vehicle and even complete battery failure in some cases.

Safety concerns have also been reported by 2021 EcoSport owners. Many owners have reported issues with the blind spot monitoring system, which is intended to alert drivers to vehicles in their blind spots. Some owners have reported that the system fails to detect vehicles in certain situations, creating a safety risk. There have also been reports of problems with the vehicle’s airbags and seat belts, although these issues have not yet led to recalls or technical service bulletins from Ford.

In addition to these issues, the EcoSport's interior materials lack refinement found in some competitors in the class, and the ride is on the firm side, making it less isolated to cracks and bumps on the road. Road and wind noise are noticeable at higher speeds, the 1.0-liter engine feels underpowered when passing on the highway, rear seat space is limited, lacking in legroom, and it's more suitable for children. No spare tire, although with the addition of an optional carrier, the spare tire can be mounted to the tailgate. The trunk space is small with rear seats up.

In conclusion, while the Ford EcoSport is a reasonably priced subcompact crossover, it has faced several common problems related to the oil pump, gearbox, electrical system, and safety features. Owners are recommended to stay vigilant and regularly check for defective parts to ensure the vehicle's safety, efficiency, and reliability on the roads for years to come.

Ford Ecosport

What is the most common problem with the Ford EcoSport?

Overheating Issues: A frequent complaint among Ford EcoSport owners is overheating. This can stem from issues like a malfunctioning thermostat, radiator problems, or a faulty water pump. Timely attention is crucial to prevent engine damage.

Is the Ford EcoSport engine reliable?

Ford EcoSport reliability

In 2021 it finished in 25th place out of 29 manufacturers. EcoSport owners were happy with reliability and build quality, along with the car's design and its performance. However, a fairly poor result for running costs shows that its petrol engines may return lower fuel economy than expected.

What are the disadvantages of Ford EcoSport?

Being a sub-four meter compact SUV, the Ecosport falls a bit short in terms of in-cabin space. While the feel in front seats is fantastic, the rear bench feels a bit cramped with limited legroom and knee room, making it a bit uncomfortable for long runs.

Is A Ford EcoSport a good buy?

For most people, the 1.0-litre 125hp petrol will be the one to have, because it's cheap to buy and reasonably nippy in town. The precise controls, easy-changing gearbox and decent view out help you drive the Ford EcoSport smoothly in town and the cabin is pretty quiet on the motorway.

  • Summary: On Tuesday, [XXX] I could have been killed on the highway due to the recall from Ford. I’m thankful I am alive today. I was driving when my engine oil pressure light came on, my speed slowed down, my car was rumbling, my engine locked up and I had to weave through traffic to pull over on the side of the road. I had to spend money to have it towed to a mechanic. The mechanic told me it was most likely caused by the recall. I had it towed to Ford in Crestview, FL. Ford said they are also pretty sure it was due to the recall. Ford Crestview told me it could take WEEKS to diagnose, and then I would have to have a whole new engine/parts in which Ford won’t have until 2025. My car will be sitting at Ford for MONTHS. Ford does not care. They don’t care I almost died. I now do not feel safe in this vehicle. I get married on the [XXX], and I have a honey moon after. I depend on this vehicle for my job, etc. i am my dads caretaker who has cancer, and we had to skip his doctor appointment because my car was not available. His WHEELCHAIR fits in my car. Ford won’t give me a loaner vehicle until they diagnose it, and Ford Crestview informed me that they don’t even know if they will have a loaner vehicle. So what happens now? Cancel the wedding? Cancel the honeymoon? Keep canceling my dads doctor appointments and he will just pass away? Please help expedite this. Why would the dealership even diagnose it, when they technically have until 2025 when parts come in. Ford is not handling this well for over 100,000 people. This is for the OIL PUMP RECALL that almost made me lose my life. Someone take this seriously. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Latest negative Ford Ecosport car reviews

  1. Kameron Boehm 2025-11-16

    Vehicle year: 2020

After receiving notice of the recall about the engine oil pump tensioner arm, it broke on my 2020 Ford EcoSport SE. Despite the notice stating that the vehicle is safe to drive, it is now undrivable. However, I am confident that Ford will take responsibility for this issue and provide a solution. I have been in contact with them and they are working on a resolution. I appreciate their efforts and look forward to a positive outcome. Thank you.

  2. Rocio Kuhlman 2025-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2021

This car does have laggy speed acceleration and limited cargo room. The infotainment is easy to use with little to no glitches. I love all the latest tech it has to offer, and the quality on the rear view camera is amazing! Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car because acceleration is laggy. In my opinion, the sticker price is high and for that price, I might as well upgrade to a car that is more roomy and provides better acceleration.

  3. Alphonso Kuvalis 2025-10-25

    Vehicle year: 2020

The car's fuel efficiency is not up to my expectations, despite using premium fuel. It usually runs at 20.4 mpg, which is far from the advertised 27/29 mpg. Although we purchased it as a commuter car for a 45-minute drive, it has not performed well on the highway. Additionally, the remote start feature is not what we were looking for, as it only has an app and not a fob start. Unfortunately, the app barely works and takes 2-3 minutes to start when it does work. This has been a major inconvenience for my husband, who has a handicap. We have expressed our dissatisfaction to the dealership, but have not received any satisfactory response. While the car has a decent sound system and a nice interior, it falls short in terms of fuel efficiency and remote start functionality. I would not recommend this car or any Ford vehicle. The hatch would be better with an inside handle to avoid handprints on the glass or car. Additionally, the side opening is not ideal in rainy weather, as there is no protection from the rain while unloading groceries. Overall, the car has not met our expectations and we have been disappointed since day one.

  4. Shane Koch 2025-10-19

    Vehicle year: 2020

The vehicle has some downsides such as limited storage in the glove box, console, and other areas, noisy engine, struggles on inclines, noisy brakes, and a loud and rough ride. However, there are also some good things about it. I absolutely love the cloth heated seats, the button to disable the stop/start feature is convenient, the 4x4 feature is nice, the backup camera is helpful due to the blindspots, the touchscreen is big, and the speakers sound great. Although I have only driven it for less than 1000 miles, I have noticed that the gas mileage is lower than I expected. At 4,000 miles, the tailpipe is already starting to rust, which may be normal. Sometimes there is a delay when shifting from reverse to drive. Overall, I think there are better options available for the same amount of money, but this vehicle is not entirely unimpressive.

  5. Dudley Lubowitz 2025-10-11

    Vehicle year: 2018

Although my experience with this car has been disappointing, I must assert that it is not a reliable vehicle. Despite initially falling in love with it, I have experienced two major malfunctions in just over a year of ownership. The first was a failed oil pump, and the second time it completely cut off on me in the middle of the road, with my child in the back. Fortunately, no one was behind me, or I would have been involved in an accident. It is clear that this car has become a headache and cannot be relied upon.

Latest positive Ford Ecosport car reviews

  1. Ceasar Kirlin 2025-11-25

    Vehicle year: 2022

I was in need of a small commuter car for work, but living in the NW, AWD was a must-have for me. Having had great luck with Fords in the past, I decided to go for it. This car fit the bill perfectly for me. It's small, but as a 5'5'' man, I find it has great visibility. It's also easy to park and I'm averaging 28 mpg (mix of highway and city driving). It fits everything I need for work and has great features that I actually use, such as remote start by phone, heated seats, sunroof, storage net and rack, AC, back up camera and sensor, and power everything. These everyday comforts make my driving experience much more enjoyable. While it may not win any races, it gets up to freeway speed easily and feels solid on the road. I know some professional reviews hate this car, but I don't get it. I think it's cute and it handles well, feeling secure and planted at any speed I drive. I live on the top of a large hill with that NW weather I mentioned already, but this car handles it with ease. The price was also great, as I got a real deal with incentives and Ford $, along with a great interest rate. All in all, I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's sad that this is the last year they will make this car, but I'm glad I got a real deal on it, especially since it's not the

This vehicle averages 30.6 mpg combined city/hwy. As with any vehicle, the faster you drive, the more fuel you will burn. To optimize your fuel efficiency, try to maintain a speed of around 72 mph on the highway. Acceleration is not an issue with this 1lt engine, as it has plenty of power to get you into traffic and pass when needed. The Sync 3 system is amazing! The cargo space is great for its size, and the seats can be folded down flat. To do so, you need to pull the back seat up and then lower the back of the seat. As a 6’4” driver, I find the driver's seat very comfortable. However, passengers in the back may struggle if they are bigger, but this is to be expected from a compact SUV.

Economical...I easily hit 30mpg on the highway and enjoyed a smooth ride all the way. There's plenty of room for riders and I found that even in sport mode, it kicks up a notch too. I got just about all the features and I think it's worth it. I have no complaints about how nicely it handles.

I recently purchased a brand new 2020 SUV ecosport from Weber Ford in Granite City, Illinois. As someone who is six foot tall, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I had plenty of legroom. In fact, I even had to move the seat up! The vehicle is fantastic and I feel safe knowing that I am surrounded by airbags in case of an accident. The design is beautiful and the interior is packed with features. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase.

I've had the Ecosport for a year now and it has been absolutely awesome! The four wheel drive is fantastic - I have a steep driveway and it backs all the way up without even spinning. It's an absolute joy to drive too. The only downside is the gas mileage, but I found out that if you use 100% gas, you can get an extra 150 miles per tank full. Yes, it costs a little more, but it's definitely worth it. Overall, it's an outstanding SUV and I wouldn't own anything else!
