The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1993 Ford E-350 problems

The Ford E-350, produced in 1993, is a reliable vehicle, but like any other vehicle, it has been known to experience certain issues. Based on the complaints from owners, here are some common problems with the 1993 Ford E-350:

  • Engine Problems: The most frequently reported issue with the 1993 Ford E-350 is engine problems.
  • Transmission Problems: The 1993 Ford E-350 has also been known to have transmission issues. These problems can range from a whining sound getting louder, the transmission not going into any forward gear, or the transmission not engaging in drive until the engine RPMs are raised to around 2000 or more. For example, one owner reported a whining sound getting louder in their E-350 super duty with 33,000 original miles, but they have a hard time believing that the transmission is going out. Another owner reported that their used 1999 e350 econoline v10 rv wouldn't go into any forward gear after being parked for 3 months.
  • Ignition Coils and/or Ignition Coil Boots: If the engine is running roughly and there are misfires on acceleration, the ignition coils and/or ignition coil boots are likely the culprit. When the rubber boot that insulates the coil dries and cracks, it can allow arcing. Replacing the ignition coil mechanism can cost between $140-$200 depending on the E-Series Model and Year.
  • Engine Oil Leaks from Cylinder Head Area: If engine oil is leaking from the cylinder head gasket, the best option is to replace the head gasket and mating surfaces on the cylinder head and block. In extreme cases, the cylinder head will need to be replaced. The average cost for replacing a head gasket is between $1100-$1400.
  • Front End Makes Rattle Noise Over Bumps: If the E-Series Van is rattling over bumps, there may be handling issues and excessive play in the upper and lower ball joints. The ball joints will need to be replaced due to entry of moisture and lack of lubrication. Replacing one ball joint can cost around $250 while replacing both is about $550.
  • Loud Popping Noise and Misfire: If a loud popping noise and a misfire are experienced right after each other, the spark plug may have been dislodged from the cylinder head, causing the threads on the spark plugs to be stripped. If the vehicle is still under warranty, it is recommended that the cylinder head be replaced. If it is not under warranty, using “Lock-N-Stitch” aluminum inserts to replace threads in the cylinder is recommended, which can start around $500 just to rent the Tool Kit.
  • Coolant Leakage from Heater Core: The electrolysis that runs through the coolant can cause corrosion and deterioration of heater core and radiator parts. Coolant liquid often finds its way onto the passenger side footwell. Replacing the heater core is a $200-$300 fix. Adding ground straps on top of that can help prevent future corrosion of components.

These are some of the common problems with the 1993 Ford E-350 based on complaints from owners. However, it is important to note that the severity and frequency of these issues can vary, and not all 1993 Ford E-350s will experience these problems.

Negative 1993 Ford E-350 car reviews

  1. Markus Bins 2024-11-08

Hey there! I got this van specifically for long trips. I live in Florida and often travel back to my hometown in Michigan. This van has a lot of power and was even used to move my brother to Florida, pulling a loaded 5x8 enclosed trailer several times.

Positive 1993 Ford E-350 car reviews

  1. Monserrat Rau 2024-08-09

I've been hauling my family and various trailers for 17 years, and I can confidently say that the comfort of the four captain's chairs and fold-down bed/third-row bench seat is unmatched. Despite having a new crew cab pickup, my family still prefers the club wagon for its exceptional comfort. In terms of reliability, I've only experienced a radiator failure (due to towing in 105+ degree weather), but other than that, it has been outstanding. Even after 17 years, the paint and interior are still in excellent condition.
