1999 Ford E-350 problems
The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).
With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).
The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 1999 Ford E-350 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the Ford E-350 1999, several common problems have been identified:
- Exhaust Leak from Broken Manifold Bolts:
- The exhaust manifold bolts in the Ford E-350 can snap due to the extreme heat and temperature changes they are exposed to. This issue is more prevalent in Ford Triton engines that use aluminum heads, which expand significantly under heat.
- Repair Cost: Replacing exhaust manifold bolts can be expensive, around $1,200, mainly due to the labor-intensive process of accessing and working within the engine area.
- Engine Misfires and Rough Running:
- The 5.4 Liter 3 valve engine with variable valve timing is prone to failure, leading to issues like misfires, sputtering, and rough running. This can be caused by cam phaser failure or oil pressure issues.
- Repair Implications: Engine misfires can result in severe problems and costly repairs if left unaddressed, potentially leading to mechanical failures.
- Transmission Problems:
- Owners have reported issues with the transmission not engaging properly, slipping in and out of gear, and failing to shift into certain gears like third gear.
- Repair Process: Diagnosing transmission issues requires connecting the vehicle to a computer to identify diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and performing a visual inspection to verify the problem. Replacing the transmission involves lifting the vehicle to access and replace the necessary parts.
These common problems with the Ford E-350 1999 highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt diagnosis, and appropriate repairs to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.
