The Ford E-Series (also known as the Ford Econoline, Ford Econovan or Ford Club Wagon) is a range of full-size vans manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company. Introduced for 1961 as the replacement of the Ford F-Series panel van, four generations of the model line have been produced. Marketed for both cargo and passenger transport configurations, the E-Series has been designed with multiple design variations for both retail and commercial sale, including vans, and commercial-grade cutaway van chassis and stripped chassis (a chassis without bodywork).

With over 8.2 million units sold since 1961, the Ford E-Series is the third-best selling van line in history (outranked only by the Ford Transit and Volkswagen Transporter). Ford retired the E-Series passenger and cargo vans after 2014, replacing them with the Ford Transit. As of current production, the E-Series remains offered exclusively in cutaway and stripped-chassis configurations. In 2021, the model line entered its 60th year of production (becoming the second current Ford line to do so).

The E-Series (cutaway/stripped chassis) is assembled by Ford at its Ohio Assembly facility (Avon Lake, Ohio), which has produced the model line since 1975. Prior to its closure, Lorain Assembly (Lorain, Ohio) assembled the model line from 1961 to 2005.

Common 2014 Ford E-150 problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Ford E-150 2014, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Oil Leaks from Cylinder Head Area: Another prevalent issue is engine oil leaks from the cylinder head gasket. The recommended solution involves replacing the head gasket and mating surfaces on the cylinder head and block. In severe cases, the cylinder head may need replacement, with an average cost ranging from $1100-$1400.
  • Front End Makes Rattle Noise Over Bumps: Owners have reported handling issues and excessive play in the upper and lower ball joints, leading to rattling noises over bumps. The resolution involves replacing the ball joints due to moisture entry and lack of lubrication. The cost for replacing one ball joint is around $250, while replacing both can cost approximately $550.
  • Loud Popping Noise and Misfire: A loud popping noise followed by a misfire could indicate a dislodged spark plug from the cylinder head, causing stripped threads. If the vehicle is under warranty, it is recommended to replace the cylinder head. Otherwise, using "Lock-N-Stitch" aluminum inserts to replace threads in the cylinder head can be a solution, with costs starting around $500 just to rent the Tool Kit.
  • Coolant Leakage from Heater Core: Electrolysis in the coolant system can lead to corrosion and deterioration of heater core and radiator parts, resulting in coolant leakage onto the passenger side footwell. Replacing the heater core typically costs between $200-$300, with the addition of ground straps to prevent future corrosion of components.

These issues highlight common concerns reported by Ford E-150 2014 owners, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to ensure the vehicle's optimal performance and longevity.

STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-06-10
  • VIN: 1FMNE1BL9ED
  • Components: STRUCTURE,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: ON JUNE 10, 2014 I LEFT MY OFFICE AND TRAVELED ACROSS THE PARKING DRIVEWAY AT ABOUT 7 MPH, A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 150 FEET WHERE I ATTEMPTED TO STOP(USING MY RIGHT FOOT ON THE BRAKE) BEFORE MAKING A RIGHT HAND TURN ONTO A BUSY FAST MOVING STREET. AT THIS POINT MY FOOT HIT THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR AT THE SAME TIME (THEY ARE EXTREMELY CLOSE) CAUSING ME TO SUDDENLY LURCH FORWARD TOWARD THE ONCOMING TRAFFIC COMING FROM MY LEFT. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO QUICKLY USE MY LEFT FOOT TO POWER BRAKE AND SAFELY STOP MY VEHICLE. THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME IN 250 MILES OF CITY DRIVING MY NEW VEHICLE THAT THIS HAD HAPPENED, BUT THE FIRST TIME I RECORDED THE TIME AND DATE OF THE INCIDENT, REALIZING THERE WAS A DESIGN ISSUE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM, I CAN SEE MANY REAR END ACCIDENTS BEING CAUSED BY THIS DESIGN. SINCE I STILL OWN A 2004 FORD E150 VAN, SIDE BY SIDE MEASUREMENT COMPARISONS WERE EASILY MADE AND I THINK I CAN SEE WHAT HAS HAPPENED. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL HAS BEEN RAISED ABOUT AN INCH AND A QUARTER HIGHER THAN MY 2004 VAN AND IS APPROXIMATELY ONE QUARTER INCH CLOSER TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. IN ADDITION BECAUSE OF THE LARGE ENGINE COWLING, THE BRAKE PEDAL IS LOCATED MOSTLY TO THE LEFT OF CENTER OF THE CENTER LINE OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHICH FORCES THE DRIVER TO EFFECTIVELY CROSS OVER AWKWARDLY TO HIT THE CENTER OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS IS A VERY UNNATURAL MOTION NOT REQUIRED ON ANY VEHICLES THAT I LOOKED AT BEFORE CONTACTING YOU. IF THE BRAKE PEDAL IS PUSHED DOWN EVEN SLIGHTLY FROM THE RIGHT HAND SIDE/EDGE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL (NORMAL HABIT BY MOST DRIVERS REVIEWING WEAR PATTERNS ON BRAKE PEDALS OF MANY VEHICLES AT MY OFFICE COMPLEX) THE BOTTOM OF A MAN'S RIGHT SHOE WILL ALMOST ALWAYS BE SOMEWHAT OVER THE ACCELERATOR, AND THE POTENTIAL FOR DUAL/SIMULTANEOUS BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PUSHING IS CREATED. *JS

2014 Ford E-150 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2014 Ford E-150.

2019-04-03
  • Manufacturer: Mobility Specialists, Inc.
  • Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: Mobility Specialists, Inc. (Mobility Specialists) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Ford E-150 and Transit vans modified to be equipped with Ricon S-Series and K-Series wheel chair lifts. The wheelchair lift positioning input cam may fail while the lift is in use, allowing the platform to travel higher than the vehicle's floor height.
  • Consequence: If the wheelchair lift platform stops above the vehicle floor, the wheelchair user can tip inwards toward the vehicle when exiting the lift, increasing their risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Mobility Specialists, working with Ricon, has notified the owners. Ricon will provide instructions and materials for replacing defective parts. Owners may contact Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884.
2015-11-04
  • Manufacturer: Mobility Works (WMK Inc.)
  • Components: EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
  • Summary: MobilityWorks (WMK Inc.) is recalling certain model year 2006-2014 Ford E-150, E-250, and E-350 vans modified by MobilityWorks to be equipped with certain model S2005, S2010, S5005, S5010, S5505, and S5510 wheelchair lifts manufactured by Ricon Corporation. The affected lifts are equipped with folding link arms that may have pivot holes that are too big, allowing the bearings to move out of position.
  • Consequence: If the bearings move out of position, the stowed platform may have excessive movement resulting in failure of the platform mounting. This failure could cause the wheel chair lift platform to fall out of the vehicle when the doors are opened, increasing the risk of injury for the lift operator.
  • Remedy: MobilityWorks will notify owners, and Ricon dealers will inspect the link arms for damage or for displaced bearings. The platform will be inspected for cracks. Any damaged parts will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began on December 15, 2015. Owners may contact MobilityWorks customer service at 1-800-769-8267, or Ricon Customer Service at 1-800-322-2884. Note: These vehicles and wheelchair lifts were subject to a similar recall in 2014. All vehicles that received that recall remedy are still affected by this recall as well.

The platform side plate of the affected wheelchair lifts may crack.
  • Consequence: If the platform side plates crack, the lift platform can separate from the lift and come to rest against the vehicle's lift door. When the doors are opened, the platform may fall out, increasing the risk of injury to the lift operator.
  • Remedy: Cummings will notify owners to take buses to a Ricon dealer or service center who will install supplemental platform support bumpers. Any platform that has already started cracking will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began January 13, 2015. Owners may contact Cumming's customer service at 1-800-639-5438 or Ricon customer service at 1-800-322-2884. Cumming's number for this recall is 14E-041.

The armored cable may be positioned such that it does not clear the wheelchair lift.
  • Consequence: If the cable does not clear the wheel chair lift it may contact the power lug and if it does not have a nonconductive cover, or it has an improperly installed non-conductive cover, then a short circuit may occur that could result in a fire.
  • Remedy: Mobility will notify owners, and Ricon will send the owner a supplemental cover kit and instructions free of charge. The recall began on June 4, 2014.
