The Ford C-Max (stylized as Ford C-MAX and previously called the Ford Focus C-Max) is a car produced by the Ford Motor Company from 2003 to 2019. It has a five-door compact multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) design. The Ford Grand C-Max has a longer wheelbase.

Ford introduced the C-Max in the United States as its first hybrid-only line of vehicles, which includes the C-Max Hybrid, released in September 2012, and the C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid, launched in October 2012. Although the C-Max was initially available only in Europe, the first generation was partially available in New Zealand.

First generation (2003)

The Ford Focus C-Max is preceded by the eponymous show car, which was designed by Daniel Paulin and unveiled at the 2002 Paris Motor Show.

C-Max Mk I was the first product to use the Ford C1 platform, also used by the Ford Focus Mk II and the compact MPV Premacy/Mazda5. Its internal code name is C214.

It seats five passengers and has a large amount of cargo space, which can be increased by folding the rear seats flat. Some models feature diagonally sliding outer rear seats. It also shares the control blade independent rear suspension from the Focus.

Common 2015 Ford C-max energi problems

The 2015 Ford C-MAX Energi has been associated with several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues primarily revolve around the vehicle's doors, windows, locks, and latches, as well as the infotainment system and fuel efficiency.

  • Infotainment System: The Ford MyTouch infotainment system has been criticized for being difficult to operate, with numerous calls being received by the Lemon Law Center regarding battery and stalling issues, as well as glitches with the Ford MyTouch/sync system.
  • Fuel Efficiency: The Ford C-MAX Energi has been questioned about its EPA gas mileage rating of 47 miles per gallon, with Consumer Reports unable to exceed 37 miles per gallon after 2,000 miles of testing. This discrepancy between the promised and actual fuel efficiency has been a point of contention among owners.
  • Recall: Ford has issued a recall for C-MAX vehicles not equipped with panoramic roof panels due to a risk of head injury in the event of an accident, as testing has shown that occupants have a greater risk of injury with these vehicles.
  • J.D. Power Ranking: The Ford C-MAX has ranked dead last in J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study, with consumers complaining of confusing and poorly functioning technology.

These common problems have led to frustration and dissatisfaction among many owners of the 2015 Ford C-MAX Energi, with some reporting that the vehicle has been a constant headache due to its reliability and cost of ownership issues.

Is the Ford C-Max Energi reliable?

The current Consumer reports Used Car Guide recommends the C-Max as “a hidden used car gem.” Avoid the 2013 model year, though. Transmissions on the Hybrid (not Energi) model were failure-prone before 2015. I own a 2014 C-Max Hybrid and a 2017 C-Max Energi, both for about six years now.

How long will Ford C-Max Energi last?

I experienced problems with the electrical system early on. However, I am confident that the issue was primarily caused by the dealership. Despite the sales people and management appearing to care, the car had to be towed twice due to the technicians failing to make proper electrical connections. Shockingly, the second time they delivered the car to me without reassembling the hybrid battery compartment! Fortunately, FMC came to the rescue and made some commercial accommodation that has worked for me.

It seems like there might be some issues with the car you're describing. Specifically, you mentioned that there is no trunk space, the glove box cannot be locked, the colors in the dash are blending, and there is not enough storage space. Is there anything else you'd like to add or any other concerns you have?

If you're looking for a car that will last, I would recommend considering other options. While I have had some issues with this car, such as having to replace a headlight assembly and battery, I understand that these things can happen with any vehicle. Unfortunately, my extended warranty did not cover these repairs. Additionally, the car's value has not held up well over time, especially if you drive more than 15,000 miles per year. If you're looking for a reliable and valuable car, I would suggest considering a Toyota Prius. I also own one of these and have had a great experience with it. It's important to note that while I have had some issues with my Ford, I still appreciate its features and use it for my daily commute. Thank you for considering my experience with this car.

charge port cover is held in place with a spring and if it disconnect it affects the entire housing which can cost up to $500. What a surprise... it happens after the warranty! The charge error message "fault in charging!" I cannot believe the poor design that cost the owner hundreds! I have own cars since the 70s and this is the 1st time a signal light bulb fails within 2-years! I have a truck/2004 and I never had to replace any lights to this day. Cheap!!!

Positive 2015 Ford C-max energi car reviews

I've been wondering for the past year why Ford doesn't market the C-Max Energi (both the regular hybrid and the plug-in) against the popular subcompact SUVs. The C-Max is essentially the same size, cost-competitive (with continuous incentives), and better in so many ways - it's quieter, has much better passing/merging power, better mileage, higher-quality interior, better visibility, and more. My spouse has the Subaru XV Crosstrek, which is a nice car, but my C-Max Energi is better in almost every respect, even though I paid thousands less (after tax credit and incentives) than my spouse paid. The Subaru has essentially no advantages over the C-Max, even though it costs more and has all-wheel drive (which I don't care about) and higher ground clearance. I believe that marketing the C-Max only as a Prius alternative (when they market it at all) has severely hurt its sales, since the C-Max will clearly not win purely on MPG. It's such a better car in every other way that it's a shame they don't do more to broaden its appeal. The C-Max could fit into a few different categories, not just as a hatchback/wagon. As someone who years ago swore I would NEVER own another Ford, I've been very pleased with my C-Max Energi. Also, I would like to say that the Sync/MyFord Touch system gets a bad rap.I've driven many different brands with their proprietary systems and I must say that Ford's system is just fine. It's certainly no worse than any of the others I've used, and because there are redundant ways to do everything, if you don't like one way to do something, you have other options. I understand that the early versions of Ford's system had issues, but the grudge in the auto press seems entirely unwarranted based on my experience. I hope Ford finds a way to keep this car going because it's a joy to drive and own. When I started car-shopping, I was not interested in a hybrid, but I bought it because of everything else it offered (and at a lower price) than the cars I was shopping it against. I likely would not have considered it without all of the incentives it had, but I have been very happy I landed on this car.

I absolutely love this car! I looked at other hybrids, both foreign and domestic, but when I drove this one, it was the clear winner. It drives so smoothly and quietly, and there's plenty of room inside, including lots of headroom. I've had it for almost 6 months now and I rarely have to buy gas. We installed a 220 charger about a month after purchasing it and I'm so glad we did - charging time went from about 6 hours to just 2 hours! If you're going on trips around 20 miles, you may never have to buy gas again. I was looking for something comfortable on the highway and this car definitely fits the bill. We also have a Lincoln MKT, but this car is just as quiet and comfortable while using much less gas. We recently went on a 500 mile road trip and averaged about 40 mpg. Around town, I've gotten as much as 175 mpg on a tank of gas! I was a bit worried that it wouldn't feel as great to drive as my previous sporty diesel car, but it's actually fantastic to drive. I really hope that Ford keeps making this car so that I can buy another one in 4 years. Maybe by then they can increase the cargo space a bit, but even with 2 people on a road trip, we can always use the back seat.

I absolutely adore my C-Max energi! With the 120 volt powercord that came with the vehicle, I can get a full 5.5 kWh charge in just 7 hours for about $.60. This charge can take me anywhere from 15-20 miles, depending on the conditions. Since I mostly drive in the city and recharge daily, I get an overall 67 mpg, which is fantastic! I've been using this car for 6 months now and it has been a great experience. Before the C-Max, I had a MINI Cooper, which was nice and sporty, but my daughters had outgrown it. Luckily, the C-Max is perfect for our tall family of four. We all fit comfortably and the kids love the color-changing

I purchased a 2015 C Max last year (2021) because my wife and I were looking for a fuel-efficient car with ample interior space. If you're solely interested in the ultimate gas saver from this model year, then a Prius may be a better option. However, I personally did not want a Prius due to its unappealing appearance and lackluster interior and handling, despite having driven many of them. The C Max, on the other hand, boasts a much nicer interior and better ergonomics, handles exceptionally well, and has a 20-mile electric range that suits my needs perfectly. Ford's goal was not necessarily to outdo the Prius in terms of fuel consumption, but rather to create a hybrid that excels in all areas, and they have succeeded in doing so, regardless of what reviewers may say. I highly recommend test driving both the C Max and the Prius to see for yourself. The seats are incredibly comfortable, especially for long trips, and offer better comfort than those in our 2016 Jeep GC Summit. Our C Max is equipped with the ultra-rare parallel parking assist option, which is a fantastic feature. It has been an amazing little car for our family of four, consisting of two adults and two children aged eight and nine. While it may not have tons of power, it is peppier than the Prius. If you're interested in purchasing a C Max, make sure to get one with LRR tires to maximize its fuel-saving potential. I have been getting around 36-37 MPG (gas engine) on the highway with non-LRR tires, which I will be replacing soon. Keep in mind that I own a C Max Energi, which has an extra battery than the regular C Max for the electric drive, making the vehicle heavier. I referenced the Prius as it is the direct competitor of the C Max. Thank you for considering my recommendation!

I have a 2015 Ford C-Max Energi with 20,000 miles on it. The C-Max is a great car that only requires an oil change every 10,000 miles, which costs around $40. It has peppy acceleration and handles well, making for a comfortable ride. The power adjustable leather driver’s seat is also super comfortable. The dealer convinced me to buy the premium extended warranty because it’s a $32,000 car, but with the $10,000 credit available in CA, I was able to get it for only $22,000. For driving comfort, handling, and reliability, I give it 5 stars. The only downside is the NAV and clunky radio interface, but the 2017 models have a better system. I looked at the Nissan Leaf, but it has a low range and lower crash test. The Chev Volt is more of a sports car, low to the ground, and only seats 4, while the 2017 C-Max seats 5 if your passengers are small. The C-Max is higher like a Honda CRV and has lots of headroom for tall people. Short people will like that the driver’s seat adjusts way up. The backup camera works well, and it’s nice to be able to swing your foot to open the power lift gate. The key fob is big, but it never needs to leave your pocket or purse. The trunk space is small, but you'd be amazed at what you can fit in the C-Max. I can fit 2 adults, 3 kids, a large cooler with drinks and snacks, 5 folding beach chairs, 1 beach tent and umbrella, 5 beach towels, and 3 foam boogie boards. The C-Max Energi is only cost-effective if you get good rebates and have cheap electricity under .15 per Kilowatt. Otherwise, you're better off just buying a C-Max Hybrid or Fusion Hybrid. I use one tank of gas per month at $33. I plug in whenever the car is in the driveway so I can do all my local driving using the electricity from the solar system. I was getting ripped off and paying .40 kwh, but now I have solar, so it’s about .09 kwh. I also installed the 220V charger, so it only takes 2.5 hours for a full charge. I can go 18-22 miles on only electric. The yearly cost for 15,000 miles, based on $2.60 for gas and...For the C-Max Energy, using 15 kwh with 60% highway and 40% local driving, you can expect to pay around $800 for gas and electricity. The C-Max Hybrid and Fusion Hybrid will cost you approximately $1000 per year. If you use solar power, like I do, you can save a lot on fuel costs. In my case, I only pay around $396 for gas and $240 for electricity, which adds up to $640 per year.
