1993 Ford Bronco problems

ford logo

The Ford Bronco is a model line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Ford. The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year. The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.

Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.

Following a decline in demand for large two-door SUVs, Ford discontinued the Bronco after the 1996 model year, replacing it with the four-door Ford Expedition; followed by the larger Ford Excursion. After a 25-year hiatus, the sixth-generation Bronco is now offered as a mid-size two-door SUV for the first time. It is also offered as a full-size four-door SUV with a 16 in (41 cm) longer wheelbase. It competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door (hardtop) convertible.

From 1965 to 1996, the Ford Bronco was manufactured by Ford at its Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, where it also manufactures the sixth-generation version.

Common 1993 Ford Bronco problems

Common Problems with the 1993 Ford Bronco

  1. Engine Stalling at Idle

One of the most common problems reported by 1993 Ford Bronco owners is the engine stalling at idle. This issue can be caused by various factors, including a faulty idle air control valve, dirty throttle body, vacuum leaks, or ignition problems. If the engine stalls at idle, it may be challenging to restart, and the vehicle may become difficult to drive, especially in heavy traffic.

  1. Low Power, Misfires, and Hunting Idle

Another common issue reported by 1993 Ford Bronco owners is low power, misfires, and stalling, accompanied by a hunting idle. These symptoms can be caused by various factors, including faulty spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, rotor, or coil packs. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor or a vacuum leak.

  1. Broken Front Axles

The 1993 Ford Bronco is known for having issues with broken front axles, especially if the vehicle is used off-road. Broken front axles can cause the vehicle to become unstable and difficult to control, which can lead to accidents and injuries.

  1. Rattle from the Front Seatback

Another common problem reported by 1993 Ford Bronco owners is a rattle from the front seatback. This issue can be caused by loose screws or bolts that hold the seatback in place. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a damaged or worn-out seatback frame.

  1. Fuel Pump Recall

The 1993 Ford Bronco was subject to a recall due to a faulty aftermarket fuel pump that could leak and cause a fire. This issue can lead to a significant safety hazard, and it is essential to have the fuel pump replaced as soon as possible.

  1. Secondary Throttle Shaft Recall

Another recall issued for the 1993 Ford Bronco concerned the secondary throttle shaft, which could become contaminated with dirt and become stuck in a partially open position. This issue can cause the vehicle to travel faster than intended, which can be a safety hazard.

  1. Creaking Frame Recall

The 1993 Ford Bronco was also subject to a recall due to a creaking frame, which could indicate a structural issue with the vehicle. This issue can lead to a significant safety hazard, and it is essential to have the frame inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

  1. Front Seat Tracks Recall

Another recall issued for the 1993 Ford Bronco concerned the front seat tracks, which were not fastened down correctly. This issue can cause the seats to become loose, which can be a safety hazard.

  1. Oil Pressure Drop

Some 1993 Ford Bronco owners have reported an issue with the engine's oil pressure dropping to zero at idle when the engine is warm. This issue can be caused by faulty oil pressure switches, and it is essential to have the switches replaced as soon as possible to prevent engine damage.

  1. Carburetor Gasket Failure

The 1993 Ford Bronco's carburetor is attached with just two studs, which can cause the carburetor to rock and fail the gasket it sits on. This issue can cause poor fuelling, which can lead to engine performance issues.

  1. TFI Module Failure

The TFI module in the 1993 Ford Bronco is known to fail, causing the engine to die when driving or at intersections, and not restarting. This issue can be expensive to repair, with an average cost of $5000.

  1. Faulty Oil Pressure Switches

The 1993 Ford Bronco's oil pressure switches can be faulty, causing the engine to seem like it has no oil pressure when warm. This issue can be resolved by replacing the switch, a procedure covered in the Haynes Bronco manual.

I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO GET KILLED AND SHUT MY EYES. WHEN I OPENED THEM, I WAS PERPINDICULAR TO TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE. I REGAINED MY COMPOSURE AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I GOT OUT TO INVESTIGATE THE ANAMOLY AND FOUND A FIRESTONE WILDERNESS AT, SIZE: 31X10.5, DOT #VD60 AW3 497. WITH THE TREAD 3/4 DETACHED. THE MUFFLER WAS SMASHED, THE WHEEL WELL WAS SHOVED INTO THE BACK SEAT WELL PAST THE POINT WHERE IT WAS WHEN I HAD LAST OBSERVED IT. THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM (I.E. This is my 2nd Ford Bronco. Although it has cost me a lot of money to keep it up, I can't complain. The motor seems very strong, but I have had to replace the 4X4, brake lines, and oil pan seal. Unfortunately, I have had to repair the thermostat and the aluminum piece on top of my motor six times. Despite these issues, I still wish Ford would bring this rig back. I won't sell this big bad girl; I'll keep restoring her.

This SUV may be 16 years old, but it still outperforms some of the best vehicles on the market today. Its design is excellent and it has great towing capabilities, making it a true workhorse. The government-issue fire marshal suspension and drive train are amazing features. The EEC IV system works great, as long as the connections don't get wet and the computer doesn't get corroded. Although replacing the ECU (computer) can be a hassle, the dual shocks on each front wheel provide a smooth ride. It averages 12-13 mpg in town and most mechanical parts are interchangeable with the Ford F-series. Parts are readily available.

This is the second Bronco I have owned. The versatility and ruggedness are awesome. I live in a desert area and this Bronco goes everywhere. I even pull a boat at times with no problem. I have kept my Bronco as original as possible, and I have had some nice bids for it.

I bought my Bronco around 2.5 years ago with 105,000 miles on the clock. It was a bit underpowered with the 302 V8, so I added a chip, dual exhaust, headers, and a K&N air filter. Now, it performs pretty well. The Bronco has around 124,000 miles on it now and runs like it's almost new. The transmission shifts well too. It's great for off-roading, and the push-button 4x4 is a plus. I love the styling and wish Ford never discontinued the Bronco. This vehicle can do just about anything you want. It's rugged enough for off-road fun, short enough to park in tight areas, powerful enough to tow a boat (torque-wise, it lacks horsepower), and roomy enough for lots of storage.

You've had this Bronco for about 5 years now and it sounds like it's been a reliable companion. The 5.8L 351 V8 is a powerful engine that can tow anything and beat anything. It's impressive that this truck can handle any terrain, whether it's mud, snow, rocks, or sand, thanks to its four-wheel drive system. Although the gas mileage isn't great, averaging 10-12mpg in the city with the big V8, it's still a great vehicle. Even after 17 years, it's still one of the best-looking cars on the road. It's clear that you have a lot of love for this truck, and it's easy to see why!

I absolutely adore my 93 Bronco, which was passed down to me by my dad. It has been such a reliable vehicle and has never let me down!
