2020 Cadillac Ct6 problems

cadillac logo

The Cadillac CT6 (short for Cadillac Touring 6) is a full-size luxury car manufactured by Cadillac between 2016 and 2020 over two generations. The first generation CT6 was introduced at the 2015 New York International Auto Show and went on sale in the U.S. in March 2016. It is the first car to adopt the brand's revised naming strategy, as well as the first rear-wheel drive full-size Cadillac sedan since the Fleetwood was discontinued in 1996.

In 2020, the CT6 was discontinued in the United States, to be replaced by the forthcoming Cadillac Celestiq liftback sedan.

First generation (2016)

The first-generation CT6 is built on a different platform than the smaller CTS and is engineered as a rear-wheel drive vehicle with optional all-wheel drive. In addition to its primary markets of North America and China, the CT6 was also offered in Europe, South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East.

General Motors discontinued the assembly of the Cadillac CT6 in the US in February 2020 due to poor sales and retooling of the Detroit/Hamtramck facility for electric vehicle production, beginning with the new GMC Hummer EV.

Common 2020 Cadillac Ct6 problems

The 2020 Cadillac CT6 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the brakes and transmission.

Brake problems are a significant concern in the CT6, with many owners reporting issues such as brake system failures, loud screeching sounds, and black greasy materials coming from the brakes. These issues can pose a severe safety risk to drivers and passengers, as the brakes are a critical component of a car's safety system. In some cases, the brake booster has failed, requiring replacement.

Transmission problems are also prevalent in the CT6, with owners reporting issues such as transmission delays, grinding or jumping when accelerating, and car shaking on the road. These issues can make the car difficult to drive and may require costly repairs. The 8L transmission in the CT6 has been identified as a particular weak point, with shift points becoming corrupted and shifts between gears becoming violent or causing the vehicle to pulsate as it coasts to a stop.

Other issues reported in the CT6 include problems with the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors, which may fail to illuminate the low pressure warning light when the tire pressure drops below the recommended level. This can lead to safety issues, as drivers may be unaware of low tire pressure, which can affect the car's handling and fuel efficiency.

In summary, the 2020 Cadillac CT6 has several common problems, primarily related to the brakes and transmission. These issues can pose safety risks to drivers and passengers and may require costly repairs. It is essential for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when deciding whether to purchase a CT6.

Are Cadillac CT6 expensive to maintain?

A Cadillac CT6 will cost about $9,911 for maintenance and repairs during its first 10 years of service. This beats the industry average for luxury sedan models by $2,050. There is also a 27.02% chance that a CT6 will require a major repair during that time. This is 12.54% better than similar vehicles in this segment.

Why did Cadillac discontinue CT6?

General Motors discontinued the assembly of the Cadillac CT6 in the US in February 2020 due to poor sales and retooling of the Detroit/Hamtramck facility for electric vehicle production, beginning with the new GMC Hummer EV.

Which CT6 engine is best?

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

That leaves the base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder as the least satisfying of the bunch and the twin-turbocharged V-8 as the best. Sprinkle the non-turbo 3.6-liter V-6 and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V-6 somewhere in between.

Is CT6 good?

Highs Beautiful exterior design, actually engaging to drive, most models cheaper than competitors. Lows Less roomy inside than rivals, mediocre interior materials, twin-turbo V-8 outrageously priced. Verdict The CT6 is a striking and engaging sedan, but it leaves true high-end luxury at the door.

THERE WAS PLENTY OF TIME TO STOP THE CAR AS I DON'T BELIEVE I PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR AT ALL. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS A WARNING APPEARING THAT INDICATES DRIVER ASSIST SYSTEM NEEDS SERVICE. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

HE CALLED GM AND THEY TOLD HIM THERE WAS TECH BULLETIN #PIC6290C INSTRUCTING THE MECHANIC TO TELL CUSTOMER THE NOISE IS NORMAL DOES NOT AFFECT SAFETY OR RELIABILITY OF THE CAR BUT WOULD NOT TELL THE MECHANIC THE CAUSE OF THE NOISE, WHICH IS GETTING WORSE! HOWEVER THE TECH BULLETIN STATES THE CAUSE WAS DETECTED AND CORRECTED ON OCTOBER 30, 2017! THE ISSUE OBVIOUSLY IS NOT CORRECTED AND IS NOT GOING AWAY. I AM CONCERNED THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE ESPECIALLY SINCE GM WOULD NOT TELL THE TECHNICIAN THE CAUSE SO I CAN MONITOR IT. THE BRAKE NOISE OCCURS ON ALL ROADWAYS WHETHER FAST OR SLOW WHETHER TURNING OR STRAIGHT AS CONFIRMED BY THE LOCAL MECHANIC. WHY WON'T GM INFORM OWNERS AND MECHANIC SO THEY CAN ASSESS THE PROBLEM AND UNDERTSAND THE DRIVING RISK?

2020 Cadillac Ct6 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2020 Cadillac Ct6.

2019-10-15
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac CT6 vehicles equipped with dealer-installed accessory 20" x 8.50" wheels (RPO 5JO or SHH). The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors use the incorrect wireless radio frequency and cannot illuminate the low pressure warning light when the tire pressure drops below the recommended level. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 138, "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems."
  • Consequence: Drivers may drive the vehicle with low tire pressure without a low tire pressure warning, negatively impacting the vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four TPMS sensors with the correct sensors, free of charge. The recall began December 3, 2019. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-586-596-1733. GM's number for this recall is N192279200.

Negative 2020 Cadillac Ct6 car reviews

  1. Alfonzo Wyman 2025-01-09

The transmission issue with my Cadillac CT6 has been a persistent problem, despite taking the vehicle in for service and receiving an upgrade to the computer. The hard shifting and lurching has occurred multiple times, even with my grandchildren in the car, which is concerning. It is clear from reading other reviews that this is not an isolated issue. While I understand that no vehicle is perfect, I am worried that this problem could lead to an accident or the need for a costly transmission replacement. Despite taking the car back to the dealership, they have been unable to duplicate the issue. However, every person who has ridden in my car has experienced the problem. Ultimately, the vehicle was repurchased by GM due to the transmission issue and their inability to resolve it.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my first ever review with you all. I purchased a used 2017 Cadillac CT6 with 34k miles on it and drove it problem-free for about 3 months. However, after that, I started experiencing some noises and had to take it to the shop 4 times before they finally fixed some cover rattling on the catalytic converter. They ended up welding it instead of repairing it, which did the trick. Unfortunately, the fuel injectors went out and left me stranded. The last straw was when the car would jerk forward while in traffic. I eventually decided to trade it in for a Mercedes S550, which has been the best decision I've made when it comes to cars. I loved Cadillacs and had a DTS prior, but this experience has made me appreciate the importance of a reliable car. Thank you for listening.

I purchased a preowned certified 2017 Cadillac CT6, which is a lovely car. However, within two weeks of owning it, I noticed that the transmission was clanking and vibrating when shifting into a lower gear. Even my wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, thought that the car was coming apart.

  4. Laverne Kris 2024-09-02

The ride quality of a Cadillac can be negatively impacted by the use of low profile tires. This was observed in both my 2013 XTS and the CT6, where the same type of low tire caused grinding on the expensive wheel and a bumpy ride. It is unfortunate that the smooth ride that Cadillac is known for is being compromised due to the use of incorrect tire height.

  5. Bertram Heathcote 2024-08-10

I really like this car, but unfortunately, the air conditioner doesn't seem to work properly in Texas. Despite having it checked four times, the mechanics always tell me that there's nothing wrong with it. They suggested that I have the windows ceramic coated, but I'm not sure how that would help if the air conditioner is working correctly. When the car is parked outside while I visit my family, it takes about 30 minutes to cool down, and even then, it doesn't always cool down enough, especially for passengers in the backseat. I'm considering switching to a Mercedes as I've never had any problems with that brand.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Cadillac DHS and my new CT6 premium luxury that I bought in 2018 with Super Cruise! It's been such a game changer for me, allowing me to travel 200 or more miles at a time in complete comfort without even touching the steering wheel. Did you know that the CT6 is the last full-size sedan they made? It's only available new in China now! Plus, I'm getting an impressive 30mpg. Thanks for listening!

  3. Zachariah Bednar 2024-09-01

The CT6 has been fully redesigned to be very techie and easy to operate. The only downside is that the owner's manual can be a bit difficult to navigate due to somewhat lacking indexing.

If you've ever driven a full-size luxury car, you owe it to yourself to experience this one. It's hard to describe just how nimble it feels. Despite being larger than its European competitors, it's thousands of dollars cheaper and still manages to be incredibly agile. Personally, I can't imagine going back to a car without AWD. As for the clunk some people complain about, it's just the transmission engaging all the wheels. Once you get used to it, you'll see that there's nothing wrong at all. In fact, it's just part of the fun of driving Cadillac's flagship. The V-6 engine is more than powerful enough, and it's also fuel-efficient. Despite its size, this car weighs the same as my 2012 CTS. Just remember, when you're behind the wheel of this big car, you're in for a treat!

Since 1987, my wife and I have been driving Cadillacs. We started with a used 1982 El Dorado and have owned a variety of models including three Sedan DeVilles, a Fleetwood, three Seville SLSs, two DTSs, an Allante, an XTS, and now a CT6. We purchased the CT6 at the end of 2018 with only 3K miles on it. Near-new Cadillacs used to be real bargains price-wise. We have driven the CT6 less than a thousand miles per month, but it is an impressive-looking car in its Midnight Sky Metallic paint. It is quiet and comfortable, and we have had no issues with it except for a transmission problem that was fixed under warranty. The V6 has plenty of power, but I would prefer a V8 in my luxury car. Overall, the CT6 is as good as it gets for a big Cadillac sedan. Despite some minor issues such as the too shallow trunk and poorly placed power window switch, it is a great car. I hope Cadillac continues to cater to mature folks who want a sedan with a smooth, quiet ride and lots of style. In 2023, the CT6 has been trouble-free through four and a half years and 55k miles, except for a broken driver's seat that required replacement of the entire lower seat frame and all the motors it contains because it is serviced as a single unit. My wife, a small lady, drives the car with ease.I have never experienced a driver's seat malfunction like this before. Despite the high cost of $1500, which included the dealer's $199 per hour labor fee, the repair was completed within three weeks. During this time, the dealer provided a courtesy car (2023 XT4) at no additional cost. Although I am not entirely satisfied with the situation, I am relieved to have my quiet and comfortable CT6 back.
