The Fiat New 500 (project 332), also known as the Fiat 500e is a battery-electric car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. The New 500 city car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and is sold alongside the conventionally-powered Fiat 500 (2007), which continues to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous BEV Fiat 500e (2013), which was sold only in the United States and had a much smaller range than the New 500. It was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was unveiled on 4 March 2020 in Milan.

The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test's urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles (EVs). The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fiat 500e is the name of the battery EV made by Fiat from 2013 to 2019. It was an EV conversion of the internal combustion 500 of 2007, and was sold in the U.S. states of California and Oregon as a compliance car to earn clean energy credits (the Renewable Energy Certificate) for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The New 500 produced since 2020 is the dedicated BEV model sold in Europe, and is often referred to colloquially as the 500e, among other names.

Overview

Sergio Marchionne called for FCA to pivot towards electric and hybrid automobiles starting in 2018, including an all-new electric 500 by 2020. Previously, FCA had assembled the 500e, a BEV derived from the 2007 Fiat 500 but limited to the United States market only, at its Toluca Car Assembly plant in Mexico from December 2012 to June 2019. FCA showed the Fiat Centoventi concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019; the Centoventi concept previewed what automotive industry believed to be a future BEV version of the Fiat Panda, which in turn was expected to form the basis for the next electric Fiat 500. The concept Centoventi showcased a modular battery concept, allowing an extended range using dealer-installed battery packs.

In July 2019, FCA announced plans to invest €700 million in its Mirafiori plant to build a new production line devoted to its first BEV marketed in Europe, tentatively named the 500 BEV, with production to start in the second quarter of 2020. The new line was planned to have an annual production capacity of 80,000 500 BEVs. FCA invested another €50 million to build a battery production line at Mirafiori in October 2019. Camouflaged prototypes of the 500 BEV were photographed while undergoing tests in December 2019.

The public unveiling amid the COVID-19 pandemic on 4 March 2020, previously scheduled for Geneva, was led by FCA Chief Marketing Officer Olivier François, who said they held the event in Milan "to show that FCA stands close to Milan and to Italy." The New 500 sits on a totally new platform and is slightly bigger than its 2007 predecessor. Compared to the earlier 500, the New 500 is 6 cm (2.4 in) longer, 6 cm (2.4 in) wider, and 4 cm (1.6 in) taller, with a 2 cm (0.79 in) increase in wheelbase. The older 500 is equipped with an internal-combustion engine or a mild hybrid drivetrain and will remain on sale.

Common 2013 Fiat 500e problems

The Fiat 500e, produced between 2013 and 2015, has faced several issues and problems that have affected its reliability and overall performance. Here are some of the most common problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Battery Issues: The Fiat 500e has faced battery issues, with 2012-2014 models experiencing problems that caused the electric propulsion to malfunction. This issue led to two wide-scale recalls, affecting the overall performance and reliability of the vehicle.
  • Limited Range: The Fiat 500e has a relatively low range compared to other EVs, making it less practical for long-distance travel or for those who need to travel frequently outside of a small area. This limitation can make the car less appealing to potential buyers looking for a more versatile EV option.
  • Sluggish Response Times: The Fiat 500e has been criticized for its overall sluggish response times, which can make the driving experience less enjoyable and less responsive compared to some other EVs in the same price range.
  • High Depreciation: The Fiat 500e has a higher depreciation rate on used models compared to most other EVs, making it a less appealing investment for those looking to purchase a used EV.
  • Limited Availability: Fiat has discontinued sales and production of the 500e in North American markets, making it more difficult for potential buyers to find and purchase the vehicle.
  • Limited Charging Capabilities: The Fiat 500e lacks DC fast charging capabilities, which can make charging the vehicle more time-consuming and less convenient compared to other EVs with faster charging options.

These issues and problems have contributed to the Fiat 500e's overall poor reputation and lower sales figures, with the car selling only 615 units in 2019 before being discontinued.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-16
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE7DT
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AS WE PULLED AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, THE CAR MADE A LOUD POPPING SOUND AND LOST POWER TO THE DRIVE SYSTEM. THE DASHBOARD IMMEDIATELY DISPLAYED A "PROPULSION SYSTEM WARNING" MESSAGE AND COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN. THE CAR WAS TOWED (FLAT BED) TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR. AFTER A WEEK, AND THE DEALER'S TECHS TALKING WITH TECHNICIANS IN DETROIT, DETROIT SUGGESTED REPLACING THE CAR'S POWER INVERTER. THIS REPAIR WILL COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. THIS CAR HAD THE POWER INVERTER REPLACED BY THE SAME SHOP IN RESPONSE TO THE RECALL TO PREVENT SUDDEN POWER FAILURE. OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE POPPING SOUND AND SUDDEN POWER LOSS IS IDENTICAL TO DESCRIPTIONS FROM OTHER OWNERS WHO HAD THE RECALL FOR THE POWER INVERTER REPLACEMENT. GLAD NO ONE WAS HURT AND THAT WE WERE NOT ON A HIGHWAY.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-06
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGEXDT
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THERE IS AN EXISTING RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. I HAVE TRIED TWICE TO GET IT REPAIRED AT THE NYLE MAXWELL FIAT DEALERSHIP IN AUSTIN TEXAS. THE DEALERSHIP IS REFUSING TO MAKE THE REPAIR. THIS IS COMING FROM THE REPAIR MANAGER MR. AUSTIN MORIN.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-07-25
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE0ET
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: WE RECEIVED RECALL S26/NHTSA 16V-303 FOR OUR 2013 FIAT 500E. WHEN I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE CLOSEST FIAT DEALER, THE EARLIEST APPOINTMENT WAS MORE THAN FOUR WEEKS OUT. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO FIAT DEALERS NEAR WHERE I LIVE, I NEED A LOANER VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I'VE BROUGHT THIS CAR FOR PREVIOUS RECALLS TO THIS SPECIFIC DEALER AND HAVE ALWAYS RECEIVED EITHER A LOANER OR A RENTAL, FREE OF CHARGE. TODAY, THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME SHE CANNOT PROMISE ME A LOANER AND THAT THEY WOULD CHARGE FOR A RENTAL. THE DEALERSHIP IS FIAT OF THOUSAND OAKS AND I LIVE IN SANTA BARBARA, CA. THIS IS A HUGE WASTE OF MY TIME, BEING THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE FOR AN HOUR, USING ALL THE VEHICLE'S CHARGE, THEN HAVING TO WAIT FOR NOT ONLY THE RECALL FIX BUT FOR THE VEHICLE TO CHARGE FOR 4 HOURS IF THEY CANNOT PROVIDE ME WITH A LOANER OR A RENTAL. I BELIEVE CAR COMPANIES SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR ALL EXPENSES WHEN IT DEALS WITH RECALLS AND THAT LOANERS AND/OR RENTALS SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC. I ALSO FEEL OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT ARE PART OF THE SAME GROUP SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO SERVICE CERTAIN RECALLS IF THE RECALL IS SIMPLY TO REPROGRAM OR UPDATE THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER.

  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE8DT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FIAT 500 E (ELECTRIC ENGINE) WAS FULLY CHARGED. STARTED CAR AND BACKED OUT OF DRIVEWAY. HEADED DOWN RESIDENTIAL STREET AT APPROXIMATELY 25MPH. WITHIN 1/8 MILE, "SERVICE ELECTRICAL VEHICLE SYSTEM" WARNING LIGHT CAME UP. CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER, BUT WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER BEFORE CAR STOPPED. CAR WOULD START, SHOW WARNING LIGHT, BUT COULD NOT BE PUT INTO DRIVE OR REVERSE TO BE DRIVEN. WAS ABLE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND PUSH IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. HAD TOWED (FLAT BED) TO FIAT DEALER - WHERE CAR RESTARTED WITHOUT PROBLEM. FIAT DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM. KEPT CAR FOR ONE WEEK, TESTED FOR 100+ MILES. TOLD ME "CORPORATE" KNEW OF THE PROBLEM AND WAS WORKING ON A "SOFTWARE FIX" - BUT TO TAKE THE CAR HOME AND DRIVE IT. THIS CAR HAS BEEN PART OF A FIAT RECALL (WORK COMPLETED TWO MONTHS PRIOR) TO PREVENT THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. DID NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM BEFORE THE RECALL. SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED IN A FRIEND'S 2014 FIAT 500 E TONIGHT - EXACT SAME WAY - WITH ENGINE POWER FAILING WHILE CAR IS IN MOTION - WITH JUST BARELY ENOUGH TIME TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC LANE. THIS FRIEND'S VEHICLE HAD ALSO HAD THE RECALL COMPLETED A MONTH PRIOR. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER OWNERS ON THE INTERNET AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BEFORE A CAR FAILS IN MOVING TRAFFIC RESULTING IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-12
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE8DT
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: THIS IS A FOLLOW UP TO MY FIRST COMPLAINT, FILED ON 07/01/14. ON 08/16/14 MY FIAT WAS TOWED FOR THE 3RD TIME TO CONCORD OF FIAT. THE FIRST TIME THE POWER INVERTER MODULE WAS REPLACED (RECALL), THE SECOND TIME THE BODY CONTROL MODULE WAS REPLACED, THE THIRD TIME THE POWER INVERTER MODULE (RECALL) WAS REPLACED, FOR THE SECOND TIME. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CHRYSLER ARBITRATION DEPARTMENT. I WILL BE SEEKING DAMAGES UNDER CIVIL CODE SECTION 1790. FURTHER, UNDER THE CA "LEMON LAW" GUIDE (1): "THE SAME PROBLEM RESULTS IN A CONDITION THAT IS LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO REPAIR TWO OR MORE TIMES BY THE MANUFACTURER OR ITS AGENTS." THE RECALL EXPLICITLY STATES THAT A DEFECT IN THE POWER INVERTER CONSTITUTES A CONDITION THAT "IS LIKELY TO CAUSE DEATH OR SERIOUS BODILY INJURY IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN..." THE CHRYSLER RECALL STATES THAT THE PROBLEM IS: "THE POWER INVERTER MODULE (PIM) ON YOUR VEHICLE MAY CONTAIN COOLING PLATES THAT LEAK COOLANT INTO AREAS OF HIGH-VOLTAGE CIRCUITRY. THIS CAN RESULT IN AN OVERCURRENT ELECTRICAL CONDITION, WHICH WILL CAUSE THE HIGH-VOLTAGE BATTERY MANUAL SERVICE DISCONNECT FUSE TO OPEN. AN OPEN HIGH-VOLTAGE BATTERY MANUAL SERVICE DISCONNECT FUSE WILL CAUSE A LOSS OF VEHICLE PROPULSION AND COULD CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING." *TR

Positive 2013 Fiat 500e car reviews

  1. Sherman VonRueden 2024-11-16

I was a bit worried about buying a used lease vehicle made by Fiat since I've always purchased new vehicles. However, after six months of driving this little electric car, I must say I'm quite impressed! I was originally looking into leasing an electric car while idling in commute traffic with my V-8, but ended up buying this Fiat instead. With the savings on gas and bridge tolls, this used car will pay for itself in about 5 years, not to mention the reduced wear and maintenance on my Jeep. The only downside I've experienced so far is the lack of Fiat service centers.

  2. Payton Kiehn 2024-08-27

Great! This car is perfect for local commutes and running errands.

  3. Rogelio Bosco 2024-06-05

I love the looks and handling! This would make an awesome commuting car. However, it might be a little tight for passengers in the back seats. The typical downsides are minimal range (<100 miles), and it takes at least four hours to charge from 'empty'.

  4. Garland Jast 2024-04-05

I've had my 500e for a little over 2 years now and I still love it! I have a 50 mi commute every work day and probably average another 50 mi each Sat and Sun, in general. The best part is that I pay pennies to drive this thing! I charge a mix of at home and at work (free at work from solar unit). I average about 80 miles per charge, but that's because I drive quite hard in my commute, usually going 75-80 mph. When I'm not commuting, I usually see about 100 miles per charge. The only thing I wish it had was a DC fast charge option, but otherwise, I'm very happy with it. Another 50 miles of range wouldn't be a bad thing either! I owned a 2012 Fiat 500 sport for years and absolutely loved it! I don't understand why more people don't appreciate Fiat as a car company. They make fantastic compact cars that are both fun to drive and incredibly reliable. In fact, I drove my 2012 for 108,000 miles without any issues. Recently, with gas prices approaching $6.00 a gallon here in Vegas, I decided to trade in my 2012 sport for an 'E' model. And what an awesome car it is! Thanks to my solar panels at home, it costs me nothing to drive. It's fast, comfortable, fun to drive, and requires no maintenance. What more could you ask for? I'm always getting stopped in parking lots by people asking me about the car. It's bright orange and hard to miss. If you're looking for a vehicle and have a round trip commute of 80 miles or less, I highly recommend finding one of these. It's the perfect car to buy!
