Fiat 500e problems
The Fiat New 500 (project 332), also known as the Fiat 500e is a battery-electric car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. The New 500 city car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and is sold alongside the conventionally-powered Fiat 500 (2007), which continues to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous BEV Fiat 500e (2013), which was sold only in the United States and had a much smaller range than the New 500. It was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was unveiled on 4 March 2020 in Milan.
The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test's urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles (EVs). The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fiat 500e is the name of the battery EV made by Fiat from 2013 to 2019. It was an EV conversion of the internal combustion 500 of 2007, and was sold in the U.S. states of California and Oregon as a compliance car to earn clean energy credits (the Renewable Energy Certificate) for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The New 500 produced since 2020 is the dedicated BEV model sold in Europe, and is often referred to colloquially as the 500e, among other names.
Overview
Sergio Marchionne called for FCA to pivot towards electric and hybrid automobiles starting in 2018, including an all-new electric 500 by 2020. Previously, FCA had assembled the 500e, a BEV derived from the 2007 Fiat 500 but limited to the United States market only, at its Toluca Car Assembly plant in Mexico from December 2012 to June 2019. FCA showed the Fiat Centoventi concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019; the Centoventi concept previewed what automotive industry believed to be a future BEV version of the Fiat Panda, which in turn was expected to form the basis for the next electric Fiat 500. The concept Centoventi showcased a modular battery concept, allowing an extended range using dealer-installed battery packs.
In July 2019, FCA announced plans to invest €700 million in its Mirafiori plant to build a new production line devoted to its first BEV marketed in Europe, tentatively named the 500 BEV, with production to start in the second quarter of 2020. The new line was planned to have an annual production capacity of 80,000 500 BEVs. FCA invested another €50 million to build a battery production line at Mirafiori in October 2019. Camouflaged prototypes of the 500 BEV were photographed while undergoing tests in December 2019.
The public unveiling amid the COVID-19 pandemic on 4 March 2020, previously scheduled for Geneva, was led by FCA Chief Marketing Officer Olivier François, who said they held the event in Milan "to show that FCA stands close to Milan and to Italy." The New 500 sits on a totally new platform and is slightly bigger than its 2007 predecessor. Compared to the earlier 500, the New 500 is 6 cm (2.4 in) longer, 6 cm (2.4 in) wider, and 4 cm (1.6 in) taller, with a 2 cm (0.79 in) increase in wheelbase. The older 500 is equipped with an internal-combustion engine or a mild hybrid drivetrain and will remain on sale.

Common Fiat 500e problems
The Fiat 500e, an electric version of the popular Fiat 500, has been praised for its zippy performance and ease of parking, making it an ideal city car. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the Fiat 500e, based on complaints from owners:
- Suspension issues: Some Fiat 500e owners have reported clunking noises coming from the front of the vehicle, particularly when driving over uneven surfaces or small potholes. This problem can be associated with the vehicle's strut mounts becoming worn prematurely.
- Steering problems: Steering problems are among the most reported issues for the Fiat 500e, with many owners complaining of odd noises when turning the steering wheel. In some cases, this has been traced back to a faulty lower steering column shroud or issues with the wiring in the steering column.
- Power steering loss: Some Fiat 500e owners have reported a loss of power steering when performing slow maneuvers such as parking or reversing, which is caused by a fault with the power steering motor.
- Loss of steering: In June 2014, Fiat recalled certain 500 models due to faulty wiring beneath the steering column, which can cause both premature wear and sudden electrical failure. If the steering wheel is not working anymore, a replacement part will be needed.
- Engine overheating: Some Fiat 500e owners have reported overheating engines, which can be caused by a coolant leak, a damaged water pump, or a clogged coolant hose. White smoke coming from the exhaust pipe is a key indicator of this problem.
- Electrical issues: Some Fiat 500e owners have reported various electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, power steering motor, and the ECU. These issues can result in incorrect readings on the instrument cluster, loss of power steering, or the oil warning light coming on.
- Oil leaks: Some Fiat 500e owners with 1.3-liter models have reported oil leaks that can affect the coolant system. These leaks are typically caused by a faulty oil pipe and can be resolved by replacing the affected part.
- Interior issues: Some Fiat 500e owners have reported a sweet smell in the car, which is caused by a burnt-out clutch.
- Seating and interior: The Fiat 500e's front seats are roomy enough for two people, but the back seat may be tight for larger passengers. The seating position is higher than expected, and the front seats are manually adjusted with no height adjustment for the passenger. The interior is made mostly of hard plastics, but the seats are made of synthetic Eco Leather and feature FIAT stitching and heating for the front two seats.
While the Fiat 500e has its share of common problems, many of these issues can be resolved with regular maintenance and repairs. Owners are encouraged to stay up-to-date with recalls and to address any issues as soon as they arise to ensure the longevity and safety of their vehicle.

- Date Complaint: 2019-06-25
- VIN: 3C3CFFGE7DT
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: AS WE PULLED AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN IN A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, THE CAR MADE A LOUD POPPING SOUND AND LOST POWER TO THE DRIVE SYSTEM. THE DASHBOARD IMMEDIATELY DISPLAYED A "PROPULSION SYSTEM WARNING" MESSAGE AND COULD NO LONGER BE DRIVEN. THE CAR WAS TOWED (FLAT BED) TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR. AFTER A WEEK, AND THE DEALER'S TECHS TALKING WITH TECHNICIANS IN DETROIT, DETROIT SUGGESTED REPLACING THE CAR'S POWER INVERTER. THIS REPAIR WILL COST MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. THIS CAR HAD THE POWER INVERTER REPLACED BY THE SAME SHOP IN RESPONSE TO THE RECALL TO PREVENT SUDDEN POWER FAILURE. OUR EXPERIENCE WITH THE POPPING SOUND AND SUDDEN POWER LOSS IS IDENTICAL TO DESCRIPTIONS FROM OTHER OWNERS WHO HAD THE RECALL FOR THE POWER INVERTER REPLACEMENT. GLAD NO ONE WAS HURT AND THAT WE WERE NOT ON A HIGHWAY.

- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-26
- Date Complaint: 2019-03-31
- VIN: 3C3CFFGE1ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I RECEIVED RECALL ET189675 U69 IN THE MAIL. I THEN SETUP AN APPOINTMENT WITH OUR LOCAL FIAT DEALER TO HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE DONE. THEY TOLD ME THEY DO NOT DO SERVICE ON ELECTRIC MODELS AND I SHOULD GO TO THE CLOSEST DEALER 112 MILE AWAY. I EXPLAINED MY RANGE IS 87 MILES ON A FULL CHARGE. SO I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BUT THEY WOULD NOT COVER TOWING AND WERE UNABLE TO MAKE THE LOCAL DEALER DO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. THIS DEALER DID A PREVIOUS RECALL UPDATE BATTERY VENT PLUGS ON MY CAR. THIS UPDATE PROTECT THE MAIL BATTERY AGAINST DAMAGE. THE CAR IS STILL FULLY FUNCTIONAL WITHOUT THE UPDATE BUT I'M OUT OF WARRANTY EXCEPT FOR THE BATTERY , I ASSUME?

- Summary: MY ELECTRIC FIAT 500E (2014) USED TO BE AMAZING. THEN FIAT MADE ME GO TO A DEALER TO GET A SOFTWARE UPDATE AS PART OF A RECALL. I GOT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IN NOVEMBER 2018. EVER SINCE THEN, WHILE I'M DRIVING, THE AMOUNT OF MILES REMAINING ON MY ELECTRIC BATTERY DROPS BY AS MUCH AS 15 PERCENT SUDDENLY, ACCORDING TO MY DASHBOARD NUMBERS. IN OTHER WORDS, I'LL BE ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING 65 MPH, AND SUDDENLY MY CAR WILL TELL ME I AM ALMOST OUT OF ELECTRIC POWER WHICH MEANS MY CAR MIGHT SUDDENLY STOP ON THE HIGHWAY AND GET HIT BY OTHER CARS. I HAVE TALKED TO THE FIAT DEALERSHIP WHICH PERFORMED THE UPDATE. THEY SAID THEY CAN'T HELP. I HAVE TALKED TO THE CHRYSLER FIAT RECALL DIVISION WHICH FORCED ME TO GET THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE WHICH HAS RUINED MY FIAT AND ENDANGERS MY LIFE. I HAVE TALKED WITH THEM FOUR TIMES ON THE PHONE. THEY PRANKED ME BY TELLING ME TO CALL BACK ANOTHER TIME AND TALK TO A 'LEVEL 1' REPRESENTATIVE. A LEVEL 1 REPRESENTATIVE, I FOUND OUT, IS ANYONE WHO ANDWERS THE PHONE AND THOSE WORKERS SAY THEY CANNOT HELP ME AND I MIGHT AS WELL KEEP DRIVING THIS DEATH TRAP CAR. I ASKED IF I COULD HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE REVERSED. THEY SAID NO. I ASKED IF THEY COULD LOOK AT MY CAR BATTERY. THEY SAID NO. THEY FORCED THIS WORSENING OF MY CAR ON ME AND NOW I HAVE NO RECOURSE BUT TO KEEP DRIVING IT AND WAIT TO DIE IN IT. I GUESS? COULD YOU PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. THANK YOU.

Fiat 500e 2015
- Date Of Incident: 2017-08-15
- Date Complaint: 2018-01-07
- VIN: 3C3CFFGE8FT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE 2013-2017 FIAT 500E CHARGER PORT [THE PART MOUNTED ON THE VEHICLE] IS A WEAK PLASTIC PART THAT BREAKS EASILY WHILE THE VEHICLE IS PARKED & BEING PLUGGED/UNPLUGGED FROM VEHICLE CHARGERS. INDICATIONS ARE THAT MOST BREAK DUE TO THE ACTION OF PLUGGING & UNPLUGGING THE VEHICLE. IT IS ALSO BOLTED TO THE BODY IN A WAY THAT STRESSES THE MATERIAL FURTHER, CAUSING IT TO BREAK EVEN EASIER. IT IS ALSO MOUNTED IN A POORLY CONCEIVED POSITION THAT LEAVES IT SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE BY OTHER VEHICLES, PASSING PEDESTRIANS & BICYCLISTS, HARD TO PLUG/UNPLUG CHARGE UNITS, & MORE. BROKEN CONNECTORS CAUSE WIRE HARNESS DAMAGE WHICH CAN LEAD TO ELECTRICAL SHORTS, FIRES [INCLUDING BATTERY PACK FIRES], & ELECTROCUTION. WITHOUT EVEN INSPECTING THE INVOLVED VEHICLE CHRYSLER/FIAT REFUSES TO REPAIR THEM UNDER WARRANTY, & INSTEAD DEALERS ARE QUOTING $1800-$4000 [DEPENDING ON LOCATION] TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE HARNESS, NOT JUST THE BROKEN CONNECTOR BODY, WHICH AHS LED MANY OWNERS TO IGNORE THE PROBLEM OR TRY 'CREATIVE' WAYS OF GETTING BY, LIKE GLUES.

- Date Complaint: 2017-05-22
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: MY SUNROOF EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. AS I WAS DRIVING (WITH SUNROOF CLOSED), A LOUD "BOOM" SOUNDED. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS SOMETHING HIT ME. BUT I QUICKLY REALIZED MY SUNROOF EXPLODED. CARS BEHIND ME SCATTERED AS GLASS FLEW ALL OVER THE FREEWAY. THIS EXPLOSION WAS QUITE JARRING, AND UNDER DIFFERENT CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. FORTUNATELY, THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. I CONTACTED FIAT CHRYSLER, BUT THEY WILL NOT CLAIM FAULT. SUNROOFS DON'T EXPLODE. AND IF THEY DO, IT HAS TO BE A MANUFACTURING FLAW. FIAT CHRYSLER NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS BEFORE AN INCIDENT LIKE THIS CAUSES SOME ONE TO GET HURT.

- VIN: 3C3CFFGE0ET
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: WE RECEIVED RECALL S26/NHTSA 16V-303 FOR OUR 2013 FIAT 500E. WHEN I CALLED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE CLOSEST FIAT DEALER, THE EARLIEST APPOINTMENT WAS MORE THAN FOUR WEEKS OUT. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO FIAT DEALERS NEAR WHERE I LIVE, I NEED A LOANER VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I'VE BROUGHT THIS CAR FOR PREVIOUS RECALLS TO THIS SPECIFIC DEALER AND HAVE ALWAYS RECEIVED EITHER A LOANER OR A RENTAL, FREE OF CHARGE. TODAY, THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME SHE CANNOT PROMISE ME A LOANER AND THAT THEY WOULD CHARGE FOR A RENTAL. THE DEALERSHIP IS FIAT OF THOUSAND OAKS AND I LIVE IN SANTA BARBARA, CA. THIS IS A HUGE WASTE OF MY TIME, BEING THAT I HAVE TO DRIVE FOR AN HOUR, USING ALL THE VEHICLE'S CHARGE, THEN HAVING TO WAIT FOR NOT ONLY THE RECALL FIX BUT FOR THE VEHICLE TO CHARGE FOR 4 HOURS IF THEY CANNOT PROVIDE ME WITH A LOANER OR A RENTAL. I BELIEVE CAR COMPANIES SHOULD BE LIABLE FOR ALL EXPENSES WHEN IT DEALS WITH RECALLS AND THAT LOANERS AND/OR RENTALS SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC. I ALSO FEEL OTHER DEALERSHIPS THAT ARE PART OF THE SAME GROUP SHOULD ALSO BE ABLE TO SERVICE CERTAIN RECALLS IF THE RECALL IS SIMPLY TO REPROGRAM OR UPDATE THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER.
Fiat 500e 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-27
- Date Complaint: 2016-06-21
- VIN: 3C3CFFGE3FT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: IT'S A PURE ELECTRIC CAR. THE PLUG ON THE 110V CHARGER OFTEN HEATS UP. IT BURNED/BLACKENED TWO OF THE OUTLETS WHERE I NORMALLY CHARGE THE CAR IN TWO DIFFERENT HOMES. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE ONE OF THE PRONGS OF THE CHARGER PLUG WAS FALLING OUT. I FELT THERE WAS A SAFETY HAZARD OF EITHER THE PRONG GETTING STUCK IN THE OUTLET OR A POSSIBLE FIRE. THE DEALER IS FAR AWAY SO I HESITATED IN BRINGING IT IN. BUT I BEGAN TO BE WORRIED AS I SMELLED THE BURNING PLASTIC IN THE MORNING WHEN I CAME TO UNPLUG THE CAR. WHEN I FINALLY BROUGHT THE CAR IN, THE SERVICE MANAGER ORIGINALLY TOLD ME IT WAS MY FAULT AND TO GO HOME WITH THE BROKEN CHARGER AS I WAS REQUIRED TO HAVE A 30AMP, 110V OUTLET. IN REALITY THERE ARE NO 110V 30AMP OUTLETS AND THE CHARGER IS RATED AT 12AMPS AND THE MANUAL SAYS 15 AMP OUTLET (WHICH IS THE STANDARD OUTLET). AFTER I INSISTED, THEY FINALLY DECIDED TO CHANGE THE CHARGER BUT TOLD ME THEY WOULDN'T DO IT AGAIN. ON THE INVOICE THEY STATED THE CHARGER WAS DEFECTIVE. I HAVE INCLUDED A COPY OF TEXT MESSAGES BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE SERVICE MANAGER AS WELL AS INVOICE FOR THE REPAIR WHERE THEY STATE THE CHARGER WAS DEFECTIVE.

- Date Of Incident: 2016-05-26
- Date Complaint: 2016-05-26
- VIN: 3C3CFFGE8FT
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: VEHICLE WILL NOT START FOLLOWING A EVENING CHARGE. 12 VOLT SYSTEM DRAINS AND CHARGING SYSTEM DOES NOT FUNCTION. FOLLOWING MORNING VEHICLE IS NOT MOVABLE AND KEY WILL NOT BE REMOVABLE. YOU CAN TRY JUMPING THE 12 VOLT SYSTEM, BUT DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. IF VEHICLE BECOMES FUNCTIONAL YOU WILL GET A HOST OF ERROR MESSAGES INCLUDING PROPULSION SYSTEM ERROR REQUIRING A RETURN TO DEALERSHIP. CHRYSLER/FIAT IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND SUGGEST TO PLUG THE VEHICLE IN AS NORMAL AND ADD A TRICKLE CHARGER UNDER THE HOOD TO THE 12 VOLT SYSTEM!!! THIS PROBLEM OCCURS AT LEAST ONCE/WEEK AND FIAT DOES NOT HAVE A SOLUTION. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH CUSTOMER CARE WHICH AGREED TO DO A SOFTWARE FIX, BUT INSTEAD CLOSED THE ORDER WITHOUT CONTACTING US AND SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE A FIX. VEHICLE IS STATIONARY AT THE TIME OF FAILURE, BUT IF IT DOES RECOVER, ERROR MESSAGES WILL SUGGEST RETURNING THE VEHICLE TO A AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER. WE ARE CONCERNED THAT SOMETHING WILL FAIL DURING MOTION. ATTACHED IS THE LAST SERVICE RECORD INDICATING CHRYSLER/FIAT IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AS WELL AS THE SUGGESTION TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL CHARGER TO MAINTAIN THE 12 VOLT SYSTEM. VEHICLE WAS TOWED AGAIN THIS MORNING DUE TO SAME FAILURE.

It's great to hear that you find it fun to drive! Additionally, you mentioned that it has great acceleration and good handling, which is fantastic.

Vehicle year: 2013
I was a bit worried about buying a used lease vehicle made by Fiat since I've always purchased new vehicles. However, after six months of driving this little electric car, I must say I'm quite impressed! I was originally looking into leasing an electric car while idling in commute traffic with my V-8, but ended up buying this Fiat instead. With the savings on gas and bridge tolls, this used car will pay for itself in about 5 years, not to mention the reduced wear and maintenance on my Jeep. The only downside I've experienced so far is the lack of Fiat service centers.

Vehicle year: 2015
I drive this car 58 miles each way to work and 58 miles back home, all on freeway miles. Part of the drive includes a steep hill for about 2 miles. On the way to work, I end up with about 20% battery life, but on the way home, I am at about 8%. So far, the car has 46K miles and it's been great because I save tons of cash versus gas. The only thing I don't like about the car is the circular gear console. It's a little tight for me personally because I like to open my legs and stretch out from the long commutes I do every day, but besides that, the car is GREAT!!! If you commute less than 50 miles, I definitely recommend it. It's also great in tight spots when looking for parking.

Hey there! I leased a 2016 FIAT 500e and loved it so much that when it was time for a new car due to high mileage driving, I didn't hesitate to get a previous year model. Electric is definitely the way to go and I've had great reliability and efficiency with the Fiat 500e. When considering previous models, it's important to factor in technology and Bluetooth upgrades. Let me know if you have any questions!

Vehicle year: 2016
I leased a 2015 500e, but unfortunately, the charging cable broke and the plugin part became loose, causing the prongs to burn my outlet. Due to this issue, my car is currently in the shop and I am unable to drive it. Despite my concerns, customer service was unable to provide me with information regarding the warranty of the charging cable. As a result, I am left feeling frustrated with the situation. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved soon and I will be able to enjoy my car once again.

The vehicle did not meet my expectations as the wheels wore out after only 10k of use and the tires were expensive to replace. Additionally, the headlights needed to be replaced in the second year. Despite my attempts to address these issues with customer service, they were not resolved. It would have been helpful if I had been informed about the durability of the tires before leasing the vehicle. A more transparent approach would have allowed me to make a more informed decision.

That's not good value for money, as it has a limited range.
