2014 Fiat 500e problems

The Fiat New 500 (project 332), also known as the Fiat 500e is a battery-electric car by Italian manufacturer Fiat. The New 500 city car is manufactured at the Mirafiori plant in Turin and is sold alongside the conventionally-powered Fiat 500 (2007), which continues to be manufactured in Tychy, Poland. That 2007 car was used as the basis of a previous BEV Fiat 500e (2013), which was sold only in the United States and had a much smaller range than the New 500. It was scheduled to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show but that event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was unveiled on 4 March 2020 in Milan.

The New 500 has a 320 km (199 mi) range on the European WLTP combined test, and achieves 400 km (249 mi) on that test's urban cycle, which is generally favourable toward electric vehicles (EVs). The car is powered by an 87 kW (116 hp) electric motor, fed by a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Fiat 500e is the name of the battery EV made by Fiat from 2013 to 2019. It was an EV conversion of the internal combustion 500 of 2007, and was sold in the U.S. states of California and Oregon as a compliance car to earn clean energy credits (the Renewable Energy Certificate) for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). The New 500 produced since 2020 is the dedicated BEV model sold in Europe, and is often referred to colloquially as the 500e, among other names.

Overview

Sergio Marchionne called for FCA to pivot towards electric and hybrid automobiles starting in 2018, including an all-new electric 500 by 2020. Previously, FCA had assembled the 500e, a BEV derived from the 2007 Fiat 500 but limited to the United States market only, at its Toluca Car Assembly plant in Mexico from December 2012 to June 2019. FCA showed the Fiat Centoventi concept at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2019; the Centoventi concept previewed what automotive industry believed to be a future BEV version of the Fiat Panda, which in turn was expected to form the basis for the next electric Fiat 500. The concept Centoventi showcased a modular battery concept, allowing an extended range using dealer-installed battery packs.

In July 2019, FCA announced plans to invest €700 million in its Mirafiori plant to build a new production line devoted to its first BEV marketed in Europe, tentatively named the 500 BEV, with production to start in the second quarter of 2020. The new line was planned to have an annual production capacity of 80,000 500 BEVs. FCA invested another €50 million to build a battery production line at Mirafiori in October 2019. Camouflaged prototypes of the 500 BEV were photographed while undergoing tests in December 2019.

The public unveiling amid the COVID-19 pandemic on 4 March 2020, previously scheduled for Geneva, was led by FCA Chief Marketing Officer Olivier François, who said they held the event in Milan "to show that FCA stands close to Milan and to Italy." The New 500 sits on a totally new platform and is slightly bigger than its 2007 predecessor. Compared to the earlier 500, the New 500 is 6 cm (2.4 in) longer, 6 cm (2.4 in) wider, and 4 cm (1.6 in) taller, with a 2 cm (0.79 in) increase in wheelbase. The older 500 is equipped with an internal-combustion engine or a mild hybrid drivetrain and will remain on sale.

Common 2014 Fiat 500e problems

The Fiat 500e, a compact electric vehicle introduced in 2014, has garnered attention for its unique design and eco-friendly features. However, some owners have reported a few common problems with this car.

  • Clutch Problems: Fiat 500s, especially those manufactured between 2012-2016, have been known to have clutch problems. An issue with the clutch diaphragm spring being prone to failure can result in an inability for drivers to change gears. This problem is reported to typically occur at around 35,000 miles, and other symptoms include a difficulty in engaging the clutch pedal and a lack of pressure on the clutch pedal.
  • Suspension Problems: The Fiat 500 has received a number of complaints from drivers regarding its suspension system, in particular for models manufactured between 2012-2015. Drivers have reported a clunking noise coming from the front of the vehicle, more noticeably when driving over uneven surfaces and small potholes. This problem can be commonly associated with the vehicle's strut mounts becoming worn prematurely.
  • Engine Overheating: An overheated engine can be caused by a number of things including a coolant leak, a damaged water pump, or a clogged coolant hose. A key indicator of this problem is white smoke coming out from your exhaust pipe, and if this happens, it’s extremely important that you pull over on the roadside and switch off your engine. Once safely pulled over, open the bonnet and leave your engine switched off for a minimum of 15 minutes - this will allow the heat from the engine to dissipate.
  • Electrical Issues: Some owners of the 2014 Fiat 500e have reported electrical issues, such as the car not driving and the dash displaying "service charging system". These issues may be caused by problems with the charge port, wiring, or the power distribution center (PDC) under the hood. If the driver's door is open and/or the key is engaged in the run position, the full voltage of the high voltage battery should register across certain test points on the PDC. If it shows 0V, the contactors in the battery may not have engaged, indicating a problem with the charging system.

These common problems with the Fiat 500e 2014 are based on complaints from owners of this car. It is important for potential buyers to be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and checks can help prevent these problems or catch them early, ensuring the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-03-26
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE1ET
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I RECEIVED RECALL ET189675 U69 IN THE MAIL. I THEN SETUP AN APPOINTMENT WITH OUR LOCAL FIAT DEALER TO HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE DONE. THEY TOLD ME THEY DO NOT DO SERVICE ON ELECTRIC MODELS AND I SHOULD GO TO THE CLOSEST DEALER 112 MILE AWAY. I EXPLAINED MY RANGE IS 87 MILES ON A FULL CHARGE. SO I CALLED THE MANUFACTURER BUT THEY WOULD NOT COVER TOWING AND WERE UNABLE TO MAKE THE LOCAL DEALER DO THE SOFTWARE UPDATE. THIS DEALER DID A PREVIOUS RECALL UPDATE BATTERY VENT PLUGS ON MY CAR. THIS UPDATE PROTECT THE MAIL BATTERY AGAINST DAMAGE. THE CAR IS STILL FULLY FUNCTIONAL WITHOUT THE UPDATE BUT I'M OUT OF WARRANTY EXCEPT FOR THE BATTERY , I ASSUME?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-12-24
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE7ET
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: MY ELECTRIC FIAT 500E (2014) USED TO BE AMAZING. THEN FIAT MADE ME GO TO A DEALER TO GET A SOFTWARE UPDATE AS PART OF A RECALL. I GOT THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IN NOVEMBER 2018. EVER SINCE THEN, WHILE I'M DRIVING, THE AMOUNT OF MILES REMAINING ON MY ELECTRIC BATTERY DROPS BY AS MUCH AS 15 PERCENT SUDDENLY, ACCORDING TO MY DASHBOARD NUMBERS. IN OTHER WORDS, I'LL BE ON THE HIGHWAY DRIVING 65 MPH, AND SUDDENLY MY CAR WILL TELL ME I AM ALMOST OUT OF ELECTRIC POWER WHICH MEANS MY CAR MIGHT SUDDENLY STOP ON THE HIGHWAY AND GET HIT BY OTHER CARS. I HAVE TALKED TO THE FIAT DEALERSHIP WHICH PERFORMED THE UPDATE. THEY SAID THEY CAN'T HELP. I HAVE TALKED TO THE CHRYSLER FIAT RECALL DIVISION WHICH FORCED ME TO GET THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE WHICH HAS RUINED MY FIAT AND ENDANGERS MY LIFE. I HAVE TALKED WITH THEM FOUR TIMES ON THE PHONE. THEY PRANKED ME BY TELLING ME TO CALL BACK ANOTHER TIME AND TALK TO A 'LEVEL 1' REPRESENTATIVE. A LEVEL 1 REPRESENTATIVE, I FOUND OUT, IS ANYONE WHO ANDWERS THE PHONE AND THOSE WORKERS SAY THEY CANNOT HELP ME AND I MIGHT AS WELL KEEP DRIVING THIS DEATH TRAP CAR. I ASKED IF I COULD HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE REVERSED. THEY SAID NO. I ASKED IF THEY COULD LOOK AT MY CAR BATTERY. THEY SAID NO. THEY FORCED THIS WORSENING OF MY CAR ON ME AND NOW I HAVE NO RECOURSE BUT TO KEEP DRIVING IT AND WAIT TO DIE IN IT. I GUESS? COULD YOU PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS. THANK YOU.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-05-27
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE3FT
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: IT'S A PURE ELECTRIC CAR. THE PLUG ON THE 110V CHARGER OFTEN HEATS UP. IT BURNED/BLACKENED TWO OF THE OUTLETS WHERE I NORMALLY CHARGE THE CAR IN TWO DIFFERENT HOMES. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE ONE OF THE PRONGS OF THE CHARGER PLUG WAS FALLING OUT. I FELT THERE WAS A SAFETY HAZARD OF EITHER THE PRONG GETTING STUCK IN THE OUTLET OR A POSSIBLE FIRE. THE DEALER IS FAR AWAY SO I HESITATED IN BRINGING IT IN. BUT I BEGAN TO BE WORRIED AS I SMELLED THE BURNING PLASTIC IN THE MORNING WHEN I CAME TO UNPLUG THE CAR. WHEN I FINALLY BROUGHT THE CAR IN, THE SERVICE MANAGER ORIGINALLY TOLD ME IT WAS MY FAULT AND TO GO HOME WITH THE BROKEN CHARGER AS I WAS REQUIRED TO HAVE A 30AMP, 110V OUTLET. IN REALITY THERE ARE NO 110V 30AMP OUTLETS AND THE CHARGER IS RATED AT 12AMPS AND THE MANUAL SAYS 15 AMP OUTLET (WHICH IS THE STANDARD OUTLET). AFTER I INSISTED, THEY FINALLY DECIDED TO CHANGE THE CHARGER BUT TOLD ME THEY WOULDN'T DO IT AGAIN. ON THE INVOICE THEY STATED THE CHARGER WAS DEFECTIVE. I HAVE INCLUDED A COPY OF TEXT MESSAGES BETWEEN MYSELF AND THE SERVICE MANAGER AS WELL AS INVOICE FOR THE REPAIR WHERE THEY STATE THE CHARGER WAS DEFECTIVE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-02-08
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE2ET
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I LEASED THIS CAR ON AUGUST 2014 AND HAVE HAD THREE INCIDENT, FIRST ONE ON NOVEMBER 13,2014 WITH ELECTRICAL WARNING "SERVICE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SYSTEM" NEEDS SERVICING. THE FIRST TIME WAS TOLD CAR NEEDED SOFTWARE UPDATE IT TOOK 3-4 DAYS TO GET THE CAR BACK. THE SECOND INCIDENT ON JANUARY 7, 2015 THE CAR COMPLETELY STOPPED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. IT STOPPED RIGHT AFTER A STOP SIGN, THE WARNING SIGN SHOWED THE SAME "SERVICE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SYSTEM" AND ANOTHER WARNING THAT I MAY LOSE POWER IN A SHORT TIME WHICH WAS THE CASE. I WAS TOLD THERE MUST BE A PROBLEM WITH MY CHARGER I CHECKED AND THERE WAS NONE. IT TOOK 2 DAYS TO GET THE CAR BACK. LAST INCIDENT WAS ON FEBRUARY 8 WITH MESSAGES "SERVICE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SYSTEM" "SERVICE PROPULSION SYSTEM" "12 V BATTERY ISSUE FINAL WARNING" AND "SERVICE 12 V BATTERY". THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL FOR 2014 OF THIS MODEL REGARDING EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. THIS MAKES THE CAR VERY DANGEROUS SHOULD THE PROBLEM OCCUR WHILE TRAVELING AT A HIGHWAY SPEED OR NORMAL STREET SPEED WHEN THE CAR LOSSES POWER AND EVERYTHING SHUTS DOWN. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-09-16
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE LEASED A 500E IN AUG 2014 FROM MCKEVITT FIAT IN BERKELEY, CA. WITHIN THE FIRST 3 WEEKS, WHILE DRIVING, THE CAR TWICE UNEXPECTEDLY AND SUDDENLY LOST ALL POWER AND STALLED. WE TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICING. AFTER A WEEK AT THE DEALERSHIP, WE WERE TOLD THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED AND PICKED UP THE CAR. THREE DAYS LATER, THE CAR SUDDENLY STALLED AGAIN (THANKFULLY AS MY WIFE WAS APPROACHING A STOP SIGN). AFTER ANOTHER 2 WEEKS AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS, WE WERE TOLD THE CAR WAS "FIXED" AND WERE ASKED TO PICK IT UP. NOTWITHSTANDING OUR CLEAR CONCERN FOR OUR SAFETY AND THAT OF OUR 3 KIDS, WHEN WE PROBED THE SERVICE TECH ON WHAT THEY DID TO FIX THE VEHICLE, HE TOLD US THAT THEY MERELY "CLEARED THE FAULT CODES" AND HAD MADE NO OTHER CHANGES. GIVEN THE CLEAR DANGER INVOLVED WITH A CAR SUDDENLY AND UNEXPECTEDLY LOSING POWER AND STALLING--SIMILAR TO THE PROBLEMS GM HAS FACED WITH FAULTY IGNITION SWITCHES--WE REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE CAR BACK. ULTIMATELY, THE SERVICE TECH, TO HIS CREDIT, ADMITTED THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE AND THAT HE DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT ABOUT GIVING IT BACK TO US. FOR OVER 7 WEEKS NOW, WE HAVE NOT HAD USE OF THE CAR--A CLEAR LEMON--WHILE STILL MAKING THE MONTHLY LEASE PAYMENTS AND SUFFERING THROUGH THE INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING AND INEPT FIAT "CUSTOMER SERVICE" EXPERIENCE. MCKEVITT EMPLOYEES HAVE REPEATEDLY LIED TO US AND HAVE BEEN DISINGENUOUS REGARDING THE "REPAIRS" TO OUR VEHICLE. I WANTED TO MAKE SURE NHTSA WAS AWARE OF OUR 500E'S SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER AND STALLING BECAUSE I WOULD FEEL DEEPLY REMORSEFUL IF SOMEONE WERE HURT OR KILLED BY A 500E THAT SUDDENLY STALLED LIKE OURS HAS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. *TR

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-08-16
  • VIN: 3C3CFFGE9ET
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I RECEIVED A SAFETY RECALL IN THE MAIL STATING THAT REPAIRS WOULD BEGIN ON JULY 21, 2014. UPON CONTACTING THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT PARTS FOR THE REPAIR ARE DELAYED FOR 6 TO 8 WEEKS. I CALLED FIAT CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER AT 1-888-242-6342 AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT THEY COULD DO ABOUT THE DELAY IN OBTAINING THE PARTS FROM THEIR SUPPLIER. BECAUSE A POWER INVERTER MODULE FAILURE CAN "CAUSE A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING" THIS REPAIR TIMELINE IS UNACCEPTABLE.

Positive 2014 Fiat 500e car reviews

  1. Korbin D'Amore 2025-01-07

We purchased the car instead of leasing it and we are extremely pleased with it overall. The back seats are quite usable, although taller individuals may find them a bit cramped. We usually keep the rear seats down. The car is very zippy with excellent acceleration, especially from 0 to 50. I typically get over 85 miles on the highway from each charge, but your mileage may vary. You may get less if you have the A/C on, more in the city, or if you drive less aggressively than I do. I have driven the gas 500 (not the Abarth), and the 500e is significantly more enjoyable. We had to deal with the half-shaft recall and some additional teething problems, but the fundamentals (electric engine, inverter, battery) all seem to be very good. The car certainly deserves the awards it has recently received.

  2. Saige Mertz 2024-11-04

Hey there! I leased a 2016 FIAT 500e and loved it so much that when it was time for a new car due to high mileage driving, I didn't hesitate to get a previous year model. Electric is definitely the way to go and I've had great reliability and efficiency with the Fiat 500e. When considering previous models, it's important to factor in technology and Bluetooth upgrades. Let me know if you have any questions!

  3. Randi Legros 2024-10-11

The car is simple and extremely reliable. That's great news! However, if anything does need fixing, the dealership may not be able to help as much as we would like. It's not that they don't want to help, but parts are hard to get and mechanics are not generally well trained in electric cars. They insist that it's just the way these cars are and they can't be returned to the original well-functioning condition. On the bright side, the batteries are long-lasting and show little degradation even after seven years. The range is about 80 miles, which is quite impressive. Although, the brakes have become a bit grabby and the front end is showing signs of wear, we can still enjoy the ride with this reliable car.

  4. Eusebio Robel 2024-09-16

I was a bit worried about buying a used lease vehicle made by Fiat since I've always purchased new vehicles. However, after six months of driving this little electric car, I must say I'm quite impressed! I was originally looking into leasing an electric car while idling in commute traffic with my V-8, but ended up buying this Fiat instead. With the savings on gas and bridge tolls, this used car will pay for itself in about 5 years, not to mention the reduced wear and maintenance on my Jeep. The only downside I've experienced so far is the lack of Fiat service centers.

  5. Garth Johns 2024-06-25

I owned a 2012 Fiat 500 sport for years and absolutely loved it! I don't understand why more people don't appreciate Fiat as a car company. They make fantastic compact cars that are both fun to drive and incredibly reliable. In fact, I drove my 2012 for 108,000 miles without any issues. Recently, with gas prices approaching $6.00 a gallon here in Vegas, I decided to trade in my 2012 sport for an 'E' model. I couldn't be happier with my decision! The car is amazing - it costs me nothing to drive because I have solar at home, it's fast, comfortable, and requires no maintenance. What more could you ask for? I'm constantly stopped in parking lots by people asking me about the car. It's bright orange and hard to miss! If you're looking for a vehicle and have a 80-mile or less round trip commute, I highly recommend finding one of these. It's the perfect car to buy!
