The Volkswagen Polo is a supermini car (B-segment) produced by the German car manufacturer Volkswagen since 1975. It is sold in Europe and other markets worldwide in hatchback, saloon, and estate variants throughout its production run.

History

As of 2018, six separate generations of the Polo have been produced, usually identified by a "Series" or "Mark" number.

Some generations were facelifted midway through production, with the updated versions known unofficially by an addition of the letter F to the mark number, e.g., Mk2F. Some members of the automotive press and some enthusiasts consider the facelifts to be separate models, so have used the unofficial designations Polo Mk1 to Mk7 for previous generations. Each Polo model is also identified by a two- or three-character Volkswagen Group Typ number. Official VW Polo history describes Mark I to Mark IV using either Roman numerals or Arabic numerals, with facelifted variants known as "Phase II" models.

The body style has been varied through the life of the car, originally as a hatchback, which derived from the Audi 50. A saloon version was marketed as the Volkswagen Derby.

Volkswagen vehicles built on different platforms have carried the Polo nameplate. For example, the Volkswagen Polo Playa hatchback sold in Southern Africa in the late 1990s was a rebadged SEAT Ibiza, which has a different body shell from the Polo Mk3 sold in Europe at the same time.

Starting in 1982, Volkswagen sold the Polo in Japan initially through an agreement with Japanese dealership Yanase that specializes in European and North American vehicles. Of all Volkswagens imported into Japan, only the Polo (until 2017) and the Golf (until 1997), complied with Japanese government dimension regulations until the introduction of the VW Up! in 2012.

Common 2011 Volkswagen Polo 1.6 comfortline problems

The Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline 2011 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the engine. Some owners have reported a completely dead cylinder, which causes the car to misfire and the idling to change constantly. This issue can be accompanied by engine vibration and the EPC light coming on. In some cases, the dealership has diagnosed this problem as worn-out valve guides, which requires replacing the cylinder head. However, some owners have questioned the validity of this diagnosis, especially considering the low mileage on their vehicles.

Another common problem with the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline 2011 is related to the electric windows. Over time, the windows can become lodged in the channels, requiring the electric motors to generate excessive power to push through the inertia. This issue can put a strain on the motors and cause them to burn out prematurely. If caught early, it can be resolved by lubricating the runners. However, if left unaddressed, it can lead to more serious problems, such as button or motor failure, requiring replacement.

The rear seatbelts in the Polo, particularly those manufactured between 2017 and 2018, have also been reported to have a fault that can cause a potential danger in the rear of the car. If a passenger is in the middle and the car must change lane at high speed, the movement of the passenger can cause the left-hand side seat belt lock to unbuckle. A difficult issue to check, but a local VW dealer should be able to confirm whether a spacer has been fitted to resolve the issue.

Fuel system problems have also been reported in the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline 2011, particularly in the TDI and TSI engine variants. These engines are known to suffer from faults and leaks, which can be challenging to diagnose and fix. Therefore, it is recommended to take along someone with a lot of mechanical nous when buying one of these models to ensure it is not a bad buy.

The windscreen washer system in the Polo is also known to have a well-known fault. During a test drive, if the windscreen washers fail to produce any fluid, the most likely culprit is a split washer jet pipe. While this part is covered by warranties, it is not too expensive to replace with new or used VW polo parts.

The radiator fan is another common problem in the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline 2011. Many car drivers, including the author of a blog post, have experienced this issue, where the radiator fan becomes vulnerable and can suffer from failures around 60K miles. Therefore, it is essential to check the service history to ensure that the appropriate replacement has been made.

In addition to these common problems, the Volkswagen Polo 1.6 Comfortline 2011 has also been reported to have issues with the timing chain, airbag, interior cabin noise, gearbox, and wiring harness problems, among others. Therefore, it is crucial to thoroughly inspect the vehicle and seek professional advice before purchasing one.
