2013 Lincoln Mkz problems

The Lincoln MKZ, is a four-door, five-passenger mid-size luxury sedan manufactured by Ford and marketed as the Zephyr (MY 2006) and as the MKZ (MY 2007–2020) by Ford's Lincoln brand across two generations in both gasoline and hybrid gas/electric models.

Both generations of the MKZ were manufactured at Ford's Hermosillo Stamping & Assembly plant in Mexico. Production ended in 2020 to make way for new Ford vehicles.

First generation (2006–2012)

The 2006 Lincoln Zephyr was initially unveiled in concept form at the 2004 New York International Auto Show, previewing a new entry-level luxury sedan. The front featured Lincoln's signature waterfall grille and jeweled quad projector beam headlights (HID headlights were available). Chrome trim extends along the Zephyr's beltline while the car's rear fascia features LED taillights and dual chrome exhaust tips. All Zephyrs featured low-profile tires on 17x7.5-inch wheels with painted aluminum versions standard and chrome versions optional.

Lincoln officially revived the Zephyr name in the fall of 2005; the vehicles were based on the CD3 platform, which was derived from the Mazda 6. Lincoln had previously used the Zephyr name in the late 1930s for the smaller Lincoln-Zephyr line of mid-size vehicles. The "Zephyr" name had also previously been used by Mercury during the late 1970s and early 1980s, for several vehicles built on the Fox Platform.

The Zephyr's sole powertrain was a 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission; identical to the V6 powertrain that was optional in the Fusion and Milan. The interior is largely unique to the Lincoln, along with different equipment packaging. The 2006 Zephyr started at a base MSRP of $28,995 USD, ranging up to $35,340 USD when fully optioned.

Though slightly smaller and front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was marketed as a replacement for Lincoln's previous entry level mid-size, the rear-wheel drive Lincoln LS. To facilitate a smooth transition, the Zephyr and LS were sold parallel to each other during the 2006 model year, the first model year of the Zephyr and the last for the LS. For 2007 the model was renamed MKZ, and took over the LS' market with sales beginning in September 2006. Lincoln's decision to resurrect the Zephyr name refers to the very early days of Lincoln before World War II. At that time, the only Lincoln manufactured was the Lincoln K-series which was a full-size sedan, and Lincoln, under the direction of Edsel Ford, Henry Ford's only son, hoped to introduce a smaller product to compete with the Packard One-Twenty, and the LaSalle, a smaller sibling offered at Cadillac dealerships.

The Zephyr featured a revised interior from the Fusion and Milan. The design featured shapes with real ebony or maple wood inserts (depending on desired trim) in metallic frames. These surfaces were contrasted with chrome-bezeled gauges, circular, chrome-finished vents and a metallic center stack where the radio and climate controls are housed. The Zephyr's steering wheel was leather-wrapped with real wood grips and satin-nickel audio, climate, and cruise control buttons. White LED backlighting was used for the Zephyr's controls and instrumentation. Leather seating surfaces were standard in all models.

Some of these standard features in the Zephyr included: cruise control, automatic headlights, fog lights, power door locks, "global" power windows (all windows can lower simultaneously at the push of a button), power adjustable and heated mirrors with puddle lamps, remote keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with redundant audio and climate controls, dual-zone automatic climate control, a universal garage door opener, 10-way power driver and front passenger seats, rear-seat reading lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with an AM/FM stereo radio and a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer. Optional in the Zephyr was a power moonroof, a DVD-based satellite navigation system, HID headlights, heated and cooled front seats, and an industry-first THX II-Certified audio system with a six-disc, MP3-compatible CD changer and ten speakers. Safety features included standard dual front-side airbags, front seat-deployed side airbags, and curtain airbags that extend from the front to rear seats.

Mechanically the Zephyr was closely related to the Fusion and Milan. As mentioned, all three cars were based on Ford's CD3 platform, which was in turn derived from the Mazda 6. Like these cars the Zephyr is natively front-wheel drive (FWD). The Zephyr uses a coil-over damper, short- and long-arm (SLA) front suspension with double-ball-joint control arms while the rear suspension is an independent multi-link design with lower control arms and a 17 mm (0.7 in) stabilizer bar. Spring rates, bushings, and dampers have been specially tuned for the Zephyr to provide excellent ride comfort without compromising handling. All Zephyrs feature standard four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with traction control. The sole engine offered in the Zephyr was an all-aluminum 3.0 L DOHC Duratec V6 producing 221 hp (165 kW) at 6250 rpm and 205 lb·ft (278 N·m) of torque at 4800 rpm. This engine was mated to an Aisin 6-speed automatic transmission and had a final drive ratio of 3.46:1. This powertrain was identical to the V6 powertrain available in the Fusion and Milan from 2006 to 2009. With this powertrain the Zephyr could accelerate from zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.5 seconds. The FWD Zephyr came with a 17.5 US gal (66 L; 15 imp gal) fuel tank and is rated to deliver 17 mpg‑US (14 L/100 km; 20 mpg‑imp) in city driving and 26 mpg‑US (9.0 L/100 km; 31 mpg‑imp) on the highway based on the revised 2008 EPA fuel efficiency measurement standards.

Common 2013 Lincoln Mkz problems

The Lincoln MKZ 2013 has been reported to have several common problems that have affected the driving experience for some owners. Here are the details of these problems:

  • Power Steering Fluid Leak: The Lincoln MKZ 2013 may develop power steering fluid leaks, which can lead to a loss of power steering and make it difficult to control the vehicle. The leak typically originates from an insufficiently clamped hose between the power steering pump or steering gear.
  • Trunk Lid May Not Latch Properly: Some Lincoln MKZ owners have reported that the trunk lid refuses to latch properly, which can prevent the trunk from making a proper seal. This issue can potentially allow moisture and water to get into the trunk, and it affects 2007 to 2014 Lincoln MKZ models.
  • Sudden Acceleration: Several 2008 Lincoln MKZ owners have reported that the vehicle suddenly accelerated even when the brakes were fully engaged, which can be a significant safety concern. This issue has been reported to cause near-accidents, and it is still unclear what component is to blame.
  • Premature Dashboard Wear: The Lincoln MKZ has been reported to have premature dashboard wear, which can make the vehicle look older than it is. This issue can be particularly noticeable on the driver's side of the dashboard.
  • Power Steering Pump Failure: The power steering pump in the Lincoln MKZ 2013 has been reported to fail, which can make it difficult to control the vehicle. This issue has been reported to occur even when the pump is replaced within the warranty period.
  • Fuel Efficiency Issues: Some Lincoln MKZ owners have reported that the vehicle uses fuel inefficiently, which can be a significant concern for those who prioritize fuel economy. This issue has been reported to cause the vehicle to consume fuel at a higher rate than expected.

These common problems with the Lincoln MKZ 2013 can significantly impact the driving experience for some owners. While some of these issues may be covered under warranty, others may require costly repairs or replacements. It is essential to be aware of these common problems when considering purchasing a Lincoln MKZ 2013 to make an informed decision.

  • Consequence: The incorrect headlamps may reduce the driver's visibility or make the vehicle less visible, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify vehicle manufacturers, and dealers will inspect the headlamps, and replace the headlamps, as necessary, free of charge. Additionally, Ford will instruct dealers to return all improper headlamps and not to install them on any vehicles. The recall began June 3, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20C10.

Negative 2013 Lincoln Mkz car reviews

  1. Chris Lueilwitz 2025-01-02

I made a mistake by not doing enough research before purchasing my business car for my trip to Asia. I opted for the MKZ from Ford based on its appearance and the positive feedback I had heard about their vehicles. However, I regret my decision as the FWD with the 2.0 engine and 19'' wheels did not provide the smooth and luxurious ride I was expecting. The engine also produced high pitched sounds when I pressed hard on the gas. Additionally, I encountered issues with the turn signal control which broke easily. On the other hand, the loaner MKZ I received with AWD and the 2.0 engine provided a much better ride than the FWD.

  2. Danny Bergstrom 2024-11-26

I purchased this car in 2013 with the expectation of receiving 45 MPG combined, but it only delivered 36 MPG. Despite my initial disappointment, I took action and filed a complaint under the Lemon Law. Thanks to my persistence, the case has been settled and the car has been repurchased by Ford.

  3. Leon King 2024-11-15

Tank specs state that it has a 16.5-gallon gas tank, but the maximum I've been able to fill is 13.5 gallons. It seems like it might have the tank that belongs to a hybrid. Additionally, the driver's side back seatbelt does not work. The worst part is that the door latches have a defect; at some point, two of my doors would not close. I had to tie one door to the middle console to drive to the dealership. This is very dangerous if you don't notice that the door didn't close.

  4. Garnett Kertzmann 2024-11-12

I purchased a brand new 2013 MKZ 2.0 4cyl w/ecoboost as soon as it was released. I used to be hesitant to buy American cars due to concerns about their build quality, but after owning several foreign cars without any issues, I decided to give the sleek new body of the MKZ a chance. Unfortunately, my car has had some issues and has been to the dealership 12 times since I bought it. These issues range from loose bolts in the rocker panel to leaks, and even a rear strut replacement. The engine also sounds louder than expected, and the emblem on my floor mat came off. Additionally, my seat back broke twice due to clips inside, and it now squeaks nonstop. Lastly, the fuel MPG is not great, with an average of 15.2MPG for city driving, although it does improve to 21/22 on the highway. Overall, it has been a bit of a headache.

  5. Kody Aufderhar 2024-10-03

I purchased this car in February 2017 with 40000 miles and it had the larger engine and AWD. Unfortunately, I had to take it back to the shop twice in one month. At 50 mph, the car shook and vibrated, and it turned out that all four tires needed balancing, not alignment. Additionally, the wipers were in poor condition and needed to be replaced. The volume on the stereo system occasionally did not work, and activating the AC caused an annoying noise to resonate throughout the car. Although the car was Lincoln Certified, I was disappointed with the 160 point check, which seemed to be just a bunch of check marks. Lincoln wanted me to pay for the balancing of the wheels and replacing the wipers, but I argued that this went against the 160 point check. I decided to trade in the car just one month later and bought a Toyota Camry, which I found to be much better. Although I initially fell in love with the beautiful appearance of the Lincoln MKZ, I ultimately regretted my purchase and felt much safer with my new car. I hope this review helps others make an informed decision.

Positive 2013 Lincoln Mkz car reviews

  1. Hermann Harvey 2025-01-02

I've been driving this car for a month now and I'm absolutely loving it more and more each day. The car is stunning both inside and out, and it drives like a dream. I'm particularly impressed with the great value I got from this car. I compared it to the BMW 528 and MB E300H, which start at 50k+, and they don't even have some of the amazing features that my car has. I've been getting 46mpg from two fill-ups, but I mostly drive on electric and in traffic, taking my time. If you drive slowly and give yourself plenty of stop distance, you can easily get 45+mpg. I adore the LED lights inside and out, as well as the AC front seats, adaptive cruise, LED headlights, and ride controls. The voice control system is fantastic, as it can control almost anything, including calls, navigation, temperature, and radio/satellite.

  2. Reuben Bailey 2024-11-29

After looking at the Hyundai Genesis and the Equus, Audi A6 and A7, and the BMW 528XI, I ran into the 2013 Lincoln MKZ. I must say, it's absolutely fabulous! The lines are awesome and the drive is smooth as butter. I was looking for an all-wheel drive 4 cylinder and this one fit the bill perfectly, and the price was wonderful when you compare it to the other vehicles I was considering. I'm really excited about this car and can't wait to take it on the road. Will update you soon!

  3. Terrence Harvey 2024-11-22

This car may not be the most exciting option out there, but it excels in providing a comfortable and luxurious driving experience. It is perfect for daily commutes and long road trips, thanks to its quiet and smooth ride, comfortable seats, and convenient charging ports for your devices. While the trunk space may be better suited for long and narrow items, it is still a reliable option for boxier shapes. With proper maintenance, this car can last for a long time. I have driven over 100k miles and it still runs smoothly and efficiently. The design of this year's model is particularly appealing, and it can be found at a relatively affordable price. By paying attention to braking and acceleration, you can easily achieve a combined MPG of around 40.

  4. Ewald Corwin 2024-11-14

This is a nice car, but it feels very large and bulky when driving. Additionally, I didn't care for the push button gear shift. There are lots of things on the dash, including the push button gear shift, that feel cheap. The plastic doesn't feel like it would hold up to lots of usage. I also didn't care for the dash display. The tachometer and speedometer were crowded into a very small space, and the fuel economy readout was in a weird place and not easy to read.

  5. Ambrose Rice 2024-11-05

Hey there! I noticed that you have a 2013 Lincoln MKZ with 111,000 miles on it. That's great to hear that nothing else has happened to it since the air conditioner bolt fell off. I'm glad to hear that it's been running well! Have you considered taking it in for a repair just to be safe?
