Dodge Ram 1500 problems
The Ram pickup (marketed as the Dodge Ram until 2010) is a full-size pickup truck manufactured by Stellantis North America (formerly Chrysler Group LLC and FCA US LLC) and marketed from 2010 onwards under the Ram Trucks brand. The current fifth-generation Ram debuted at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan, in January of that year.
Previously, Ram was part of the Dodge line of light trucks. The name Ram was first used in 1981 model year Dodge Trucks in October 1980, following the retiring and rebadging of the Dodge D series pickup trucks as well as B-series vans, though the company had used a ram's-head hood ornament on some trucks as early as 1933.
Ram trucks have been named Motor Trend magazine's Truck of the Year eight times; the second-generation Ram won the award in 1994, the third-generation Ram heavy-duty won the award in 2003, the fourth-generation Ram Heavy Duty won in 2010 and the fourth-generation Ram 1500 won in 2013 and 2014, and the current fifth-generation Ram pickup became the first truck in history to win the award three times, winning in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Common Dodge Ram 1500 problems
Common Problems with Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup Trucks
- Engine Problems: The 2010-2013 Dodge Ram 1500 (5.7-liter V8) has common engine problems, including the engine turning off while driving, lifters wearing out the camshaft, and the engine turning over but not starting. These issues can be expensive to fix, and owners have also reported drivetrain, transmission, suspension, and electrical problems as the vehicle ages. The power-to-MPG ratio is also considered poor compared to other trucks from the same years.
- Leaking Rear Window: The Dodge RAM leaking rear window has been a longstanding issue with the truck, and it continues to plague owners of the 2023 model. A fault in the seal around the rear window lets water enter the vehicle. If not promptly repaired, the leak can damage the car’s interior, especially the carpet. Fixing the RAM 1500 rear window leak requires replacing the window seal, which can cost around $70. However, dealerships often quote $1,000 or more to perform the replacement. Replacing the window seal also presents the risk of the window breaking, which can add an additional $1,000 to the cost.
- Frame Replacement Cost: Another costly issue commonly reported by RAM 1500 owners involves damage to the truck’s steel frame during a collision. The outcome of a crash involving a RAM 1500 frame can lead to insurance assessments that classify the damage as not a total loss but instead recommend a frame replacement. The Dodge RAM frame replacement cost depends on location and labor, with a replacement frame often running between $2,000 and $3,000, not including the technician’s work. The job can easily exceed $10,000, which can put RAM 1500 owners into a financially challenging position, unable to afford the cost of repairs but with an insurance assessment that won’t write off the vehicle as a loss.
- Power Module Corrosion: Power module corrosion is a common and costly problem in Ram 1500 pickup trucks. This issue can lead to a full powertrain failure, which can be expensive to fix. While many fifth-gen and fourth-generation Ram 1500s suffer from a cracked exhaust manifold, dealing with this problem promptly can keep it from getting costly.
- Leaking Coolant: Leaking coolant is another common problem in Ram 1500 pickup trucks. This issue can lead to overheating and engine damage, which can be expensive to fix. It is essential to address this problem promptly to prevent further damage to the vehicle.
- Cam and Lifter Failure: Cam and lifter failure is a common problem in Ram 1500 pickup trucks. This issue can lead to engine failure, which can be expensive to fix. Dodge RAM 1500 engine replacement costs can range widely, with a replacement estimate of as much as $13,000.
- Dashboard Cracking: The dashboard in the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 is prone to cracking easily and at low mileage. Although this is just a cosmetic problem, it can become a significant issue if it affects the truck's functionality or safety.
- Suspension Problems: Some Dodge Ram 1500 models come with a sturdy suspension, but modified engines and high towing capacity can put additional stress on the suspension, leading to problems over time.
- Cruise Control Malfunction: The sophisticated cruise control in some Dodge Ram 1500 models can malfunction, making it difficult or impossible to use.
- Exhaust Manifold Cracks: Some Dodge Ram 1500 models suffer from cracked exhaust manifolds, which can lead to engine performance issues and require expensive repairs if not addressed promptly.
What is the most common problem with the Dodge RAM 1500?
RAM 1500 engines fail for a variety of reasons. However, the most common issue appears to be related to a defective transmission. Dodge RAM 1500 engine replacement costs can range widely, with a replacement estimate of as much as $13,000.

- Summary: I purchased my 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 truck around May 2022 at a used car lot. It had low mileage so I thought I did great. Immediately after I brought it home, it began to die. I figured it had a really old battery so I purchased a new one. This one would last around 3 days instead of the one day before dying. I would drive it and jump it over and over. I tried to contact the dealer over and over but they would not respond to my calls. I wrote a terrible review about them in Yelp and they contacted me immediately, but when I attempted to schedule a time to drop the truck back off, they stopped responding again. About 9 months later the truck stopped turning over all together. We found that the fuel pump was the issue. It sat for a year until I had it towed to the mechanic, who fixed the fuel pump, but found that the car would only run for a few seconds. He continued to diagnose it, and after weeks, he tells me that there is something terribly faulty with the electrical system, but he is stumped as to what it is. He says he does not see where anyone has tampered with the system at all, but there is something mysterious about the electrical component. I have put so much money into this truck including having to pay insurance and a high monthly payment for a dead truck. Please help me. I can provide documents after I meet with mechanic who still has truck.
