Common 1990 Ford Tempo problems
The Ford Tempo, produced from 1984 to 1994, is known for several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include poor idle, engine stalls, and hesitation on acceleration.
One of the most frequently reported problems with the Ford Tempo is poor idle. This issue can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty idle air control (IAC) valve, dirty throttle body, vacuum leaks, or ignition system problems. A failing ignition coil can create several symptoms, including a rough idle, check engine light, and poor engine performance or stalling.
Another common complaint from Ford Tempo owners is engine stalls. This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including a weak fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, dirty fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor. If the engine stalls while driving, it can be dangerous and require immediate attention.
The Ford Tempo also has a reputation for hesitation on acceleration. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including a weak fuel pump, dirty fuel injectors, or a malfunctioning throttle position sensor. In some cases, the problem may be caused by a faulty transmission control module or a worn-out clutch.
In addition to these engine-related problems, the Ford Tempo also has issues with its suspension system. The front springs may be too tall, which can cause the car to shudder during acceleration from a standstill. This problem can be addressed by replacing the front springs with shorter ones to improve the car's ride quality.
While the Ford Tempo has its share of problems, it is worth noting that it was a popular car in its time and sold well due to its affordability and basic transportation capabilities. However, it was no match for its Japanese rivals in terms of quality and performance.
In conclusion, the Ford Tempo has several common problems that can affect its engine performance, suspension system, and overall driving experience. These issues can be caused by various factors, including faulty components, wear and tear, and poor maintenance. If you own a Ford Tempo, it is essential to address these problems promptly to ensure the car's safety and reliability.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2001-12-10
- VIN: 1FAPP33S6LK
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,POWER TRAIN,SEAT BELTS,STRUCTURE
- Summary: 1.) ROUGH IDLE, AND OIL LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY COMES ON WHEN IDLING AND ONLY GOES OFF WHEN ACCELERATING, BUT OFTEN STALLS OUT, AND DOESN'T WANT TO RE-START. (HAD OIL CHANGED TWICE TO GET EXCESS GAS OUT OF IT FROM TRYING TO START IT.) HAD TO TOW CAR THREE TIMES. PAID $1,000 TO TRY TO GET IT FIXED, BUT ON THE WAY HOME IT DID THE SAME THING. 2.) COOLING FAN QUIT WORKING AND CAR OVERHEATED AND I PAID TO HAVE THE RADIATOR REPLACED, AS PETCOCK WAS LEAKING. MECHANIC DIDN'T NOTICE THAT FAN WASN'T WORKING, SO IT OVERHEATED ON THE WAY HOME WITH A NEW RADIATOR. I FIGURED THAT OUT. ONCE THE FAN WAS REPLACED WITH A WORKING FAN, NO MORE OVERHEATING. AFTER-MARKET RADIATOR WAS BIGGER THAN THE ORIGINAL, CAUSING THE AT FLUID LINE TO GET SAWED OFF BY THE PULLEY 3 TIMES, BEFORE SOMEONE JUST PLUGGED THE LINE AND INSTALLED A SEPARATE AT FLUID "MINI RADIATOR TYPE" COOLER. 3.) TRANSMISSION DRAGS; CAR HAS JUST OVER 70,000 MILES ON IT. HAS REPEATABLE PROBLEM WHEN STARTING OUT AND SHIFTING FROM FIRST TO SECOND GEAR, USUALLY JERKING FORWARD WHEN IT SHIFTS. PUTTING CAR INTO DRIVE AFTER STARTING IT USUALLY ENDS UP IN THE CAR STALLING, AND THE IDLE IS DIFFERENT WHEN IT'S IN GEAR THAN WHEN IN PARK OR NEUTRAL. 4.) I RECEIVED A NOTICE ABOUT A CLASS ACTION SETTLEMENT REGARDING A DEFECTIVE TFI MODULE, BUT EVERY MECHANIC I SPOKE WITH SAID THAT WASN'T THE PROBLEM, BUT THE NOTICE SAID THAT A BAD TFI MODULE WOULDN'T NECESSARILY ALWAYS MAKE THE CAR STALL WHEN IT'S GOING BAD, JUST SOMETIMES. STALLED IN RUSH HOUR ONCE. 5.) THE DRIVER SIDE AUTOMATIC SEATBELT QUIT WORKING, WHICH CAUSED THE PLASTIC GUIDE FOR THE BELT TO BREAK, AND WHEN I WENT TO FORD TO TRY TO GET THE PART, THEY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE IT WAS, AND SAID THAT THEY WEREN'T PLANNING TO HAVE THE PARTS AVAILABLE AFTER 2002 ANYWAY. OFTEN, I ABOUT GOT STRANGLED, AS DID OTHERS WHO RODE IN MY TEMPO, WHEN WE OPENED THE DOOR TO GET OUT OF THE CAR. 6.)FROM THE CAR OVERHEATING, THE FINISH ON THE HOOD IS PEELING AND CRACKING. *NLM

My first car was a Tempo, which I purchased from my aunt with 105k miles for $400. The engine is incredibly strong and the transmission is highly responsive. Over the course of 13 years, the car has only been towed once due to a dead battery and left me stranded once when the engine block heater fell out due to a poorly tightened bolt. Despite this, the total cost of parts for the car over 13 years was only $400. Although I have since replaced it with a 1996 Taurus SE, I still miss my Tempo.

I love this car! With just routine maintenance, this car is unbeatable. It is an absolute 'bear' in the snow. It now has over 173,000 miles and is beginning to show some surface rust, so I'm looking for a replacement vehicle. If it were economically feasible to replace the body and keep the car, I'd do it!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Ford Tempo that I bought brand new in 1990. It's been such a reliable car over the years, only needing a new muffler. It's great on gas and built to last. I've been in a few fender benders, but it's always held up. Unfortunately, the transmission went last year, but I know I can fix it myself with just a new case. The A/C also stopped working, but I think it just needs a new compressor. Overall, I've been really happy with this car and it's been a great companion over the years.

It's great on gas mileage! And if you're looking for a little more speed, just add a turbo and it runs like a dream. I've had it for a while now and the only maintenance needed has been regular tune-ups!

It sounds like you got a good deal on your car, but unfortunately it didn't last very long. It might be best to only consider purchasing it if you can find it at a very low price.

Hey there! I remember my first car, a 1990 Ford Tempo. It had its ups and downs, but overall it wasn't the best experience. Unfortunately, it broke down quite often and always seemed to be leaking something. The summers were tough because the A/C was broken, and the winters were even worse because it took forever to warm up and had no traction. On the bright side, it never overheated in the winter! Well, most of the time. When I finally got a new car, they gave me $500 for it, which was really nice of them. By the way, have you checked out my car review of the 1997 Honda Civic HX? It's a great car!
Emerald Cole 2024-06-25
This one-owner auto has been a reliable and good running/riding car, with 130,000 miles on the clock. Although it has the notorious thick-film module problem, it still manages to cruise the interstate at 80-85 all day and gives me 28mpg. The car has a gigantic trunk and a great stereo/tape audio for an old beater. The non-metallic red paint still shines up great and they don't make them like this anymore. There are a lot of these running around Kansas, which is a testament to their overall quality. Although it's a 17-year-old car, I wouldn't take less than $2000 for it, but it's not for sale!
Jake Hills 2024-03-08
Well, I bought this car because it was inexpensive. However, right after I got it, it started having all kinds of leaks. The CV joints went bad even though the boots were good. The motor, transmission, and power steering all had minor leaks. Additionally, the AWD didn't work, the car got bad mileage, and all the door handles fell off. The radiator fan needed replacement, along with numerous sensors. Overall, I would recommend avoiding these cars even if they're inexpensive and look nice.
