1995 Dodge Neon problems

The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.

1991 concept car

The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.

The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1995 Dodge Neon problems

The Dodge Neon, produced from 1995 to 2005, is a front-wheel drive compact sedan with a mix of reliability reviews. Some common problems reported by owners include a malfunctioning cooling fan, oil entering the spark plug tubes, and a musty smell from the HVAC system.

  • Malfunctioning Cooling Fan: The Dodge Neon's cooling fan is known to fail, which can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. The cooling fan is responsible for maintaining the engine's temperature by circulating air through the radiator. If the fan fails, the engine can overheat, potentially causing severe damage. Regular maintenance and inspection of the cooling fan can help prevent this issue.
  • Oil Entering Spark Plug Tubes: Another common problem reported by Dodge Neon owners is oil entering the spark plug tubes. This issue can lead to misfires, rough idling, and decreased engine performance. The cause of this problem is often attributed to worn or damaged piston rings, which can allow oil to seep past the cylinder walls and into the combustion chamber. If left unaddressed, this issue can lead to severe engine damage and require costly repairs.
  • Musty Smell from HVAC System: A musty smell from the HVAC system is another common issue reported by Dodge Neon owners. This problem is often caused by mold or mildew growth in the evaporator case or heater core. Regular maintenance and cleaning of the HVAC system can help prevent this issue. If the musty smell persists, it may be necessary to replace the evaporator case or heater core, which can be a costly repair.
  • Stalling and Hard to Restart: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported that their vehicles stall while driving and are hard to restart. This issue is often attributed to faulty ignition coils, which can cause the engine to misfire and stall. Regular inspection and replacement of ignition coils can help prevent this issue.
  • Blown Head Gasket: A blown head gasket is a common problem reported by Dodge Neon owners, particularly in the 1995 model. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and engine damage. Regular inspection and maintenance of the cooling system and head gasket can help prevent this issue.
  • Noisy Brake Pads: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported noisy brake pads, particularly in the 1999 model. This issue is often attributed to worn or damaged brake pads, which can cause squeaking or grinding noises when the brakes are applied. Regular inspection and replacement of brake pads can help prevent this issue.
  • Service Engine Light is Constantly On: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported that the service engine light is constantly on, indicating a problem with the vehicle's emissions or engine performance. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including faulty sensors, worn or damaged spark plugs, or issues with the catalytic converter. Regular inspection and maintenance can help prevent this issue.
  • Cracked Head Gasket: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported cracked head gaskets, particularly in the 1999 model. This issue can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and engine damage. Regular inspection and maintenance of the cooling system and head gasket can help prevent this issue.
  • Engine Misfires: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported engine misfires, particularly in the 2003 model. This issue can be caused by faulty ignition coils, spark plugs, or wires. Regular inspection and replacement of ignition coils, spark plugs, and wires can help prevent this issue.
  • Transmission Issues: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported transmission issues, including rough shifting and slipping. This issue can be caused by worn or damaged transmission components, low transmission fluid, or issues with the vehicle's computer system. Regular inspection and maintenance of the transmission and computer system can help prevent this issue.

Negative 1995 Dodge Neon car reviews

We purchased this car from a cousin of ours in great condition, but unfortunately, we experienced some issues with it. Despite our best efforts to maintain it, the car required numerous repairs over the course of two years. We eventually decided to part ways with it after it broke down three times in less than two weeks due to multiple issues, including a problematic head gasket. It's important to be aware of this issue, especially if the car has a high mileage. While we had a difficult experience with this car, we hope that others can learn from our experience.

The car has experienced some issues such as constant noise due to windows without frames, a knocking noise from the back, squeaky brakes, head gasket failure at 95K, and engine oil leakage at 100K. Additionally, the struts required replacement at 100K. Despite these challenges, I have invested over $2000 in repairs and maintenance, and the car is now in excellent condition.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with a vehicle I purchased back in 1998. While it was generally dependable, I did encounter some issues along the way. Some of the little things that went wrong included instrument cluster failure, stereo issues, paint coming off with major rust, tinting bubbling, windows and power locks failing, and interior and exterior trim falling off the car. Despite these challenges, the ride was stiff but handled well. While it wasn't the most powerful or sporty car, it got the job done. I averaged about 22mpg with mostly city use, and didn't put too many miles on the car. Unfortunately, after about 80,000 total miles, the timing belt unexpectedly broke and destroyed the engine. Overall, I learned a lot from my experience with this car and wanted to share my story with you.

I bought this car with only 24K on it. It was my first car. Although I should have realized that it was not in the best condition when the previous owner told me they had already replaced the transmission. Unfortunately, every 6-7 months, something else would go wrong with it. My head gasket went, then the timing belt, and now my check engine light keeps coming on and going off again. It only has 50K on it right now! I've been really good to it, with regular oil changes and tune-ups, but it was not a good buy. I will never buy another Dodge.

Hey there! Thanks for considering this car. I just wanted to share my personal experience with it. While it may not have been the best fit for me, it could still work for you! Just keep in mind that it did require some repairs, so make sure to factor that into your decision. Best of luck!

Great value overall! It's amazing that this vehicle is still running strong after 200,000 miles. Although I've had a few minor problems, they were all normal wear and tear issues such as the cruise control actuator, fuel gauge sending unit, timing belt tensioner, and shifter cable ends (5-spd).

  2. Trevion Kohler 2025-01-06

I bought this car back in '97 when it had 89,000 miles on it. Today, it has over 190,000 miles on it and it's been quite a journey. Sure, the headliner is falling, the paint is chipping, the speedometer is intermittent, the head gasket had to be replaced, and there's a hairline crack in the block. But you know what? Despite all that, this car has been an absolute joy to drive over the past 5 years. In fact, in the right hands, with a 5 speed, this car can even embarrass some Hondas, Toyotas, and a few V6s! I've started doing all the work myself and it's amazing how much you can do for cheap. The car is now on its second college student and it's been a godsend for us. It doesn't owe us a dime and it's become one of those special family cars you hear about.

I got my Neon when a friend accidentally tore the clutch out. He decided to purchase an SUV instead of repairing it, so I purchased it from him for $200.00. Since then, I have replaced the clutch, transmission, front brakes, and A/C compressor clutch to make it a cool and comfortable ride. I am impressed with the car's performance and handling, which exceeded my expectations. As an affordable and economical vehicle, it is important to keep in mind that mileage and wear and tear are inevitable. Additionally, not all owners treat their cars the same way.

I bought this car as I am a college student who needed cheap, reliable transportation, but this car is perfect for whatever you want to do. Basically, as long as you take good care of the Neon, and don't drive it too hard, it will last many many miles. The key is to take care of it -- it is a mechanical dream to work on.

My first car and I still love every minute of it! I bought it in a fire engine red color with a manual transmission and it's loads of fun to drive. I've done standard maintenance with oil changes every 3K, etc. I just had my timing belts changed at 102K.
