Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
- Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
- Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
- Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
- Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.
When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

- Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Dodge Journey 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Vehicle year: 2017
When I first went to the dealership, I had my heart set on buying a new Jeep. However, after test driving a few models such as the Patriot and Latitude, I found that I wasn't happy with the ride, comfort, or interiors. Additionally, my price point kept putting me in the 4cyl Jeeps. Having previously owned a Chevy Blazer and a couple of Jeep Cherokee Sports, I decided to test drive a new 2017 Journey Crossroad AWD on a whim. To my surprise, I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. After 9 months of ownership, I am still satisfied with my purchase, despite a few minor issues. Although the vehicle is not the most attractive, the 'boss' looking black color on the front grill package of my otherwise light gray (silver) vehicle is a nice touch. The heating and air conditioning can take a while to get going, and I miss the daytime auto-running lights, but these are minor issues. On the other hand, I love the roominess of the front seat area and the plenty of rear space, especially with both rows of seats folded down. The V6 acceleration is fine for my driving style, and quick acceleration when needed is adequate, like for merging into heavy traffic. I average about 25mpg at 70 mph on the highway, and a little better on cruise. In town, suburb driving around 21 mpg. I appreciate the somewhat basic electronics package, and although I rarely use Bluetooth, I do enjoy the Sirius radio. This is the first AWD vehicle I have owned, and I was a little apprehensive about it, but my first winter in the upper Midwest (Iowa) proved that it can handle the snow with ease. Overall, Dodge has done a good job of winning me over, and I am happy with my purchase. Update: June 2019. I still own this vehicle and still agree with everything I said above. The heating and cooling system works best when only one area is selected at a time. Attempting to heat or cool both the floor and dashboard simultaneously can strain the system. By selecting one area, the desired temperature is reached more quickly. I have not experienced any maintenance issues and appreciate the spaciousness and simplicity of the basic package. I highly recommend this vehicle. Update 1/25/24: I continue to own this vehicle, which now has 83K miles on it. Recently, I had to replace one of the rear wheel bearings, but otherwise, I have had no issues. However, I have noticed a significant blind spot caused by the windshield frame where it meets the driver and front passenger side doors. This has made it difficult to see vehicles approaching from the left or right, especially at 4-way stops. I suspect this may be due to the airbags located in the frame. Additionally, while I initially did not feel the need for a backup camera, I now wish the vehicle had one due to its size. Overall, I still find the vehicle to be reliable, spacious, and low maintenance.

Hi there! It's great to hear that you've been enjoying your Journey for the past 2 years. We also had some trouble with the tires that came with our car, so we decided to switch to Toyo tires and they've been fantastic! We also recently replaced our brakes and rotors, as we noticed some warping. We opted for cross drilled rotors and ceramic brake pads, which have been a great investment in keeping our Journey running smoothly. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

It's true that Dodge hasn't updated the Journey since 2011 and it doesn't have some of the advanced electronics that its competitors do. However, if you're looking for an SUV at a great price, the Dodge Journey is the perfect choice. I've been driving it for a while now and I find it very comfortable and it handles the road well. I highly recommend getting the optional V6 engine, as the 4Cyl. version is underpowered for this size of vehicle. Overall, I think the Dodge Journey is a great option, especially with the phenomenal deals that dealers are offering right now.

Vehicle year: 2019
It seems like Dodge may have missed the mark with this model. I have the basic version and there are a few things that could be improved. For example, the motor cover is no longer included and the front passenger seat doesn't fold down flat for long cargo. Additionally, the digital interface for the speedometer could be better designed. It's important to be cautious when pulling out in front of other vehicles as the car doesn't accelerate very quickly. Lastly, the standard radio is not interchangeable with other radios and can be quite expensive to replace. However, there are affordable options available if you're looking for a good Bluetooth radio. Overall, there are some areas for improvement but it's still a decent car.

One issue I've encountered with this vehicle is having to replace the battery, but it's a quick and easy job that only takes about 15 minutes with the right tools. It's important to keep in mind that negative reviews only represent a small percentage of the many satisfied customers. While there have been some electrical and starting issues, replacing the battery in the remote can often solve the problem. The only other complaint I have is with the brakes and tires. When replacing the brakes, it's worth investing in high-quality options like Brembo and quality pads to save money in the long run. As for tires, unfortunately, there's no easy solution. Despite these minor issues, my family has enjoyed this vehicle for over 3 years and 30,000+ miles.

This is my first ever vehicle review and I want to share my experience with this particular vehicle. Me and my boyfriend bought this vehicle 2 years ago and unfortunately, it was a headache from day one. It started with tires wearing down to nothing within a few months. We brought it into the shop and found out that it was the rear links. We got them replaced and then within the next month, we needed new struts, which we also got replaced. We then had to replace the wheel bearings twice within 6 months of each other. In between all this, we made sure the car went in for alignments. We thought we were in the clear until yet again the back tires are 3 months old and will need to be replaced next month. Within 2 years we had to go through at least 8 sets of tires. We unfortunately bit the bullet and just traded the vehicle in early and got a more reliable and safer vehicle (which at this point is any vehicle but this one). Although we had a tough time with this vehicle, we have never had this kind of problems with our 2010 dodge journey. This vehicle is a money guzzler and unless you are prepared to fix it every few months, I would recommend staying away from this vehicle altogether.

I am an experienced Dodge owner with a collection of 5 vehicles, including 2 Durango's, 1 Ram, and a Challenger. Unfortunately, my latest purchase, a vehicle for my wife, experienced multiple issues within the first 5 months of ownership. Despite taking it to the dealer for repairs, the problems persisted, including the car starting on its own, the AC turning on by itself, doors not unlocking, and the car not starting even after the dealer claimed it was fixed. Despite my loyalty to the brand and having spent over $100,000 on Dodge vehicles, the complaint line only offered a simple apology. As a confident and knowledgeable Dodge owner, I expected better customer service and support from the company.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the Journey with 5900 miles has been in the Dodge shop four times this month due to oil seepage from the transaxle output seal and differential cover. Unfortunately, it's back in the shop this morning due to likely leakage from the output seal on the passenger side. Last month it was the BCM that needed replacement. I wanted to thank the dealership for being so accommodating, but I think it's important that this issue gets corrected. Thanks for your time!

Vehicle year: 2013
I purchased the 2013 Journey SXT brand new almost 7 years ago and was impressed with the blacktop trim package. However, I have had some issues with the car over the years. In the first year, I noticed that something was soaking the floor mats and filling the rear floor storage compartments. After some investigation, I discovered that a faulty hose under the steering wheel was spraying liquid from the A/C onto the floor and me while driving. Unfortunately, there have been at least 4-5 recalls on this vehicle, including several electronic 'fixes' that caused other issues once 'fixed', such as the radio now skipping channels if you drive over a bump. The steering wheel controls (radio and cruise) are all finicky and the cruise control does not maintain speed well at all. Once it hit 100,000 miles, the car began to malfunction in multiple major areas, including a faulty clock spring ($600 part) and a broken flex wheel not 6 months later ($1200 fix). After researching these issues, it seems to be a common problem for Dodge & Chrysler vehicles. Despite their own dealership mechanics acknowledging that these repairs are NOT normal wear and tear, Dodge refuses to acknowledge the flawed design and manufacturer defects in their vehicles. I am disappointed with my experience with this vehicle and the company's lack of accountability. I would caution potential buyers to be aware of these issues before making a purchase.
