Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.

Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.

  1. Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
  2. Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
  3. Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
  4. Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
  5. Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  6. Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
  7. Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  8. Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
  9. Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  10. Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.

When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 3C4PDCAB7JT
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?

Dodge Journey 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Latest negative Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Emerald Balistreri 2025-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2010

At 40K, I experienced a carbon build up issue with my engine, despite following the maintenance schedule diligently. The service team suggested using higher octane gas, which was not required as per the specs. Although I complied for a while, my EGR Valve and transmission failed just after my warranty expired, and both bearings in my front wheel also needed replacement - one while still under warranty, and the other just after. Currently at 170K, I faced another carbon build up issue that caused my rad reservoir to blow. The cylinder head had to be replaced, as it was made of aluminum. However, I am confident that with proper maintenance and care, I can avoid such issues in the future.

  2. Grayce Sporer 2025-11-21

    Vehicle year: 2014

**BE ADVISED** My husband gave me a brand new 2014 Dodge Journey as a gift last year, but unfortunately, it has turned out to be the biggest nightmare in our automobile purchasing history. The car always had a lag when stepping on the gas, but we were told that the reason was because it was a 4.0 and had little power. We accepted that answer and, other than the lag, were happy with the car. However, when the car was approximately 4 months old, the touch screen started going out and would turn black for a little under a minute before turning back on. We took it in for a diagnostic check, but were told that nothing was wrong and there was nothing they could do since they could not tell where the problem was coming from. This issue started happening more and more often. Then, when the car was between 10 and 11 months old, the speedometer went out of whack. The dial was reading correctly, showing I was traveling at 65mph while the digital screen was showing I was traveling at 115mph. That night, on my ride home from work, the touch screen went out along with the lights. So, here I was, traveling on a dark highway by myself with no lights. I pulled over to the shoulder of the highway and turned the car off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. When I turned it back on, it drove as normal and all the lights worked. I filled the tank with gas and continued my drive home. When I turned onto my street, my car began making a very loud knocking noise. When I stepped on the gas, the noise grew louder. Luckily, I had picked up my 2 sons on the way home. My boys had to get out and push the car 3 blocks to my house since I was the only one who could steer. The next morning, my husband towed the car to the dealership. The mechanics then told my husband that we had put the wrong gas in the car and destroyed the engine. My son had pumped the gas the night before and was certain he used unleaded. The gas station attendant was very helpful and even pulled up the tape from the night we were there to help us out. However, when my husband went to the dealership to inform them of the issue, he was met with resistance. The mechanic claimed that we used ethanol, which my husband pointed out is present in all gas. The mechanic then claimed that it smelled like 85% ethanol and that this was what caused the engine to fail. This seemed unlikely to us, as it's hard to imagine how someone could smell a percentage in a liquid or gas. When my husband asked if the gas had been tested, the answer was no. Unfortunately, my car was in the shop for almost 3 weeks and we were given a rental car that was too small for our family of 7. We were unable to go anywhere as a family during this time, which was frustrating. After getting my car back, we started experiencing problems with the lights, touch screen, and speedometer again. When we contacted corporate, they offered us 2 years of free oil changes, which we didn't feel was enough. They then asked us to take the car back to the dealership, promising a rental with a 3rd row. However, when my husband took the car in, he was told that there were no rentals available. This was very disappointing, especially after a long shift at work. We feel stuck with this car, which has caused us a lot of trouble and heartache. We strongly advise against buying a Dodge Journey, especially for the safety of your family. #dontbuyadodge

    Vehicle year: 2010

I have had several issues with this car and have spent a considerable amount of time at the dealership. However, I am confident that I can find a solution to this problem. While I have owned Dodges in the past, this particular model has not met my expectations. I believe that if enough people come together to address these issues, the manufacturer will take notice and take action. Despite the current challenges, I am determined to find a resolution and ensure that I am getting the quality I deserve.

  4. Brady Ruecker 2025-11-14

    Vehicle year: 2011

My 2011 Dodge Journey Crew has been experiencing issues with the battery draining, resulting in three trips to the dealer for repairs. Despite Chrysler's lack of a solution, I am confident that the issue will be resolved. While I have concerns about the reliability of the car, I am optimistic that it will be resolved and I will be able to trust it once again. I believe that any potential safety concerns can be addressed and mitigated. Overall, I rate my car as having some issues, but I am confident that they will be resolved.

  5. Diego Gusikowski 2025-11-10

    Vehicle year: 2013

On June 1, 2014, I was getting off a highway onto a ramp. I stepped on the brakes to slow down to the ramp speed limit, but suddenly the brakes locked and the vehicle came to an abrupt halt with the ignition still running. As expected, everyone in the vehicle lurched forward. It was a major scare! Since then, I have not had another incident. However, I have limited confidence in the vehicle now and am not willing to take it on long distance trips.

    Vehicle year: 2018

I'm so glad to hear that you found the perfect car for your family! The 2018 Crossroad AWD in pitch black with black leather interior and black rims sounds like a great choice. It's wonderful that it has the technology you were hoping for and the third row that you needed. I'm happy to hear that all three of your grandkids fit comfortably in the car, with two of them in the third row and the smallest one rear-facing in the second row. It's great to hear that you're excited to experience Maine's winter months in your new car. If anyone is looking for a new car to transport kids around in, I would definitely recommend the Crossroad. Thanks for sharing your experience!

  2. Henry Dicki 2025-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2017

It's wonderful value for the price! Our Crossroad Plus had everything we wanted in an SUV that can seat 7. The only downside so far is the backup camera. The image is not very clear (quite fuzzy, in fact). However, it still does the job, but we've had much better backup cameras in other vehicles.

  3. Morris Boyer 2025-11-27

    Vehicle year: 2011

Unless you want a minivan, this is the best alternative. The positive difference in build quality between the 2010 and 2011 models is stark. It has a powerful and smooth engine, and a decent transmission. The ride is extremely smooth and quiet, so obviously the suspension and build engineering were done right. It drives and feels like a more expensive car than it is. I hope we don't encounter any of the battery/starter issues, but at least we're informed. Thank you for the info!

I really love my car! It's been great for road trips and the gas mileage is even better than what the sheet says. On the highway, I'm averaging 30.8 mpg, and in the city, I'm getting 23.3 mpg. I used to have a 2011 Chrysler 200, but I wouldn't change my decision to purchase this car. I have a Great Dane, Rottweiler, and Border Collie, and all three fit with plenty of room compared to my old car. The storage is awesome for their toys, food, and water. I absolutely love this car!

I purchased my 2015 Journey SE AWD in August of the same year. I am surprised by the negative ratings as I have had a great experience with it. The only time I had to bring it in for anything other than routine maintenance was when I overfilled the gas tank, which triggered a trouble code shortly after I bought it. I brought it to a local dealership as I was out of town, and they looked at it and reset the computer. They advised me not to 'top it off' as I'm used to, and I haven't had any problems since then. I don't understand what Edmunds is saying about the poor handling and lack of power. Mine tracks perfectly and holds corners very well at speed. The driver's seat could be a little better, but after a 9-hour ride, my back is fine, so no complaints. My only regret is that I didn't do enough research before picking this one. Don't get me wrong; the car is a great buy. I just assumed it had the fold-down front seat with storage and satellite radio as base equipment and found out too late that it didn't. I love the storage bins in the floors of the back seat as well as in the rear of the car. The car has great lines and is comfortably roomy. However, I must say the radio in it leaves much to be desired, and its retail value drops like a rock, so be prepared to either be in it for a while or have cash to put down for a trade. I would highly recommend getting vent guards installed because what the wipers push off the windshield will come right in through a cracked driver's side window. All in all, I would say this has been a very reliable vehicle through its first 24,000 miles, and I am not expecting any problems anytime soon. They make it sound like it's a rolling piece of junk compared to others that they drool over, but I'm here to tell you that from my experience, it's simply not true. I also occasionally tow a 5 x 10 trailer with this, which the others can't do effectively. To sum it up, this is a great car with more storage and passenger capacity than others in its class. The V-6 with AWD is comfortable, predictable, and provides more than adequate power for passing and on-ramp acceleration. It will surprise you how fast it can get going from a dead stop. The brakes have performed well, and the handling is exceptional. I live in the hills of TN and navigate twisty/windy roads every day at about 45-50 mph with complete confidence. This isn't a sports car, and I've owned a few SUVs in my time, so I have no idea what they're talking about when they say it has excessive body roll. There is room for improvement, but most of them are available in different models or options, whether stand-alone or packages. I plan on buying another one within the next year. If you stick with what my next one will have, V-6 AWD, and be either the Crossroad Plus or R/T models with the premium sound, navigation, and back-up camera, as well as the fold-flat front seat, you will be very happy with the vehicle. My only gripe is my own fault: get the options that you want up front, and DO NOT get the 4-cylinder engine. It's not up to the task and not available in AWD for that reason. If they don't have it in stock, then either have them find one and bring it in, find another dealer who does, or if you have the time, have it built for you, and then put the vent deflectors on it. From there, expect to have a great ride that can take you most anywhere at any time comfortably, economically, and safely.
