Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.

Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.

  1. Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
  2. Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
  3. Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
  4. Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
  5. Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  6. Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
  7. Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  8. Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
  9. Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  10. Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.

When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 3C4PDCAB7JT
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?

Dodge Journey 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Latest negative Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Halle O'Keefe 2025-07-11

    Vehicle year: 2018

I am extremely dissatisfied with my 2018 Journey. Despite purchasing it brand new, it has been in the shop four times within the first four months due to a persistent noise in the front end. Although the shocks and two other components were replaced, the issue still persists over a year later. Additionally, I have recently experienced electrical problems, such as the radio turning the volume up to 40 while driving and the back fan for the air/heat turning up on its own. As a customer, I am thoroughly disappointed.

This is an example of why it's important to do your research before purchasing a new vehicle, especially from FCA Chrysler/Dodge. Unfortunately, we had some issues with our transmission and rear differential while on a cruise, as well as some problems with the engine pulleys and electronics in the doors. However, we did have a great experience with the brakes and the engine's performance. The climate control did fail a couple of times, but overall, we had a comfortable ride. When it was time to trade in the vehicle, we were pleasantly surprised by the trade-in value. While we won't be purchasing a Journey again, we appreciate the good times we had on the road.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2015 Journey Crossroad AWD 6cyl. Living in an area with frequent snowfall, I was looking for an SUV that could handle the conditions. While the vehicle performed well in minor snow conditions, I recently encountered a snowfall of 6 inches in a short period of time and unfortunately, the car struggled. Despite the AWD, Electronic Stability, and Braking features, the car came to almost a standstill. I had to apply more gas to make any progress, and even when I switched off stability control, the tires just spun. Overall, I still enjoy the car but wanted to share my experience. Thank you for listening!

  5. Jeffrey Stoltenberg 2025-06-27

    Vehicle year: 2012

I purchased my 2012 Journey in April. Unfortunately, a little over a week later, the transmission began to shutter and jerk when upshifting or downshifting. I took it to one dealership, but they were unable to fix the problem. I then took it to a different dealership and the service director, who is an ex-master tech, took me for a test drive. He explained that the transmission shuttering and jerking is a common issue with Journeys, and that most people don't notice it until about 3000-3500 miles. While this may be frustrating, it's important to remember that this is a known issue and not a cause for concern. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

Latest positive Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Emmitt Batz 2025-07-13

    Vehicle year: 2015

I drive this SUV as an Uber service vehicle, picking up and driving people to their destinations. Here are the pros and cons that I have noticed. Passengers always compliment the beautiful and comfortable interior design, although there is a slight vibration when braking. I have not experienced any reliability issues with this vehicle, even after owning it for several months. I have had it inspected at oil change shops and they have found no issues with it. The only cons I have noticed are that the AC/Air comes on at random times, which may be a glitch in the vehicle's climate control design, and the vehicle vibrates slightly when stopping. However, these are minor issues and do not detract from the overall positive experience of driving this vehicle. Additionally, the storage space in this SUV is awesome and I have received many compliments on it. Overall, I highly recommend this ride and have received too many compliments to give it a negative review.

Thanks for sharing your experience with your Dodge vehicle! It's great to hear that you've had a positive experience with it over the past 6 years, even with some rough driving conditions. It's a shame that Dodge has decided to discontinue the model, but it sounds like you plan on keeping it for a while longer. Have you considered a Jeep Wrangler or Ram 3500 for your future towing needs? It's also good to know that you've had success with Chrysler and Hyundai products in the past. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!I always carry my bag of tricks for inspection and quoting work, along with two laptops, an all-in-one HP printer, roofing sample boards, sticky-soled tennis shoes, and dedicated roof walking boots. The cargo management of this vehicle is impressive, with plenty of room for office supplies, files, raingear, and more. I recently took a road trip from DFW down to San Antonio and Austin, and I was pleased to see that the average mpg was 26.5 at 75-85 mph. In town, it gets 20.8 mpg, which is better than my 1/2 ton pickup's 18 highway and 10-11 in town working. The sound system and 8.4

Just keep up on the maintenance, I've been told. Have you had any problems at all?

  4. Ted Cronin 2025-07-04

    Vehicle year: 2015

I recently rented a 2015 Journey LTD with V-6 for a 10-day vacation to the Sierra Nevada area of California, including Sequoia, Yosemite, and Tahoe. We traveled half of the trip on interstates or four-lane highways and the other half on winding mountain roads with 35 MPH speed limits and grades of 6 to 12%. In total, we traveled 1,301 miles and averaged 21.02 MPG. I found the car to be slightly overpowered on the freeway and slightly underpowered in the mountains, but overall, I had no complaints. The shifting was smooth and concise, and the seating was very comfortable. The handling was better than expected, almost as good as a sedan. I was pleasantly surprised by the car's performance. I currently drive a Toyota, but I would seriously consider renting this car again, depending on its reliability rating.

  5. Bryon Auer 2025-07-03

    Vehicle year: 2017

Congratulations on your new 2017 Journey! It sounds like you made a great choice. Even though it may not have all the bells and whistles of some other vehicles, it still has a lot of great features that make it a fantastic buy. You mentioned that it has a 173 hp engine, which is shared with Hyundai and Mitsubishi, and it also comes with traction control, a six-speaker touchscreen audio system, dual-zone air conditioning, and more. Plus, it has a longer wheelbase and more room than your previous car, making it easier for your wife to get in and out of. It's great to hear that it drives just as nicely and handles about the same, but is much quieter. With everything you really need included in the base price, it's definitely a comfortable and convenient ride. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!BTW, if you're driving a 10 or more year old Escape or similar small SUV/CUV and looking for a new vehicle with similar dimensions that doesn't look like every other SUV/CUV on the road, the 2017 Dodge Journey could be a great option. It has an improved overall driving experience and plenty of pickup. I stand by all I said above, and will add that while the exhaust note makes it sound like you are driving a sewing machine, it has a manual driver's seat that is the most comfortable I've ever experienced. So far, I have had no issues, and have changed the oil regularly, using full synthetic motor oil. It gets 22 MPG in town if you don't drive it like you stole it. On the highway, at 75 MPH with the cruise control and air conditioner on, it gets a solid 26 MPG. Maybe not as good as some other small SUV/CUV's, but you'll make up for it thanks to the low purchase price. I didn't buy the 3rd row seat, and saved a good bit of cash. Lots of cargo space with the fold-flat rear seats folded down - swallowed a storage shed kit with no problems. I plan on bringing home a load of patio blocks tonight. One-year update: I still like it. Everything I said above still holds true. The nice thing about the Journey is that you can find these equipped a hundred different ways, at prices from $22,000 to $40,000. The Pentastar V-6 and 8-speed automatic (which I have in my work van) is a ROCKET engine. The Journey is a fine vehicle for the money, and I hope you find it as enjoyable as I have. The car has held up exceptionally well over the years. Despite running over something on the highway that ruined a tire and broke a plastic cover under the front bumper cover, the interior hasn't started coming apart, and everything still works. The windshield washer squirter supply hose came off between the hood and hood insulating pad, but a friendly oil-change technician quickly fixed it. I've only spent money on car washes, synthetic oil changes, and one tire. The car still runs great, with periodic maintenance, and is worth every dime I paid for it. It may not win any beauty contests or drag races, but it delivers solid value if maintained. The car looked brand-new after being detailed before selling, a testament to the materials it was built with.Today's new cars all feature expensive, high-maintenance drivetrains, whether forced-induction liquid fuel, or electric. However, cars like this Journey are already becoming prized by smart drivers who want REAL economy (low maintenance).
