Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
- Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
- Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
- Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
- Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.
When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.
Do Dodge Journeys have problems?
While the Dodge Journey may be reliable, some model years can run into issues like interior water leaks, a malfunctioning remote keyless entry system, an overheating engine, head gasket damage, and premature wear on brakes.

Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Dodge Journey 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Vehicle year: 2019
My wife and I recently had to purchase a new car. With two kids aged 11 and 9, we were looking for a small SUV. After conducting some research, we decided to test drive the 19 Ford Escape and 19 Jeep Renegade. Although both cars seemed fine, neither felt quite right. However, when I saw the Black Dodge Journey, I was immediately drawn to its appearance. Despite the fact that expert reviews online rated the Journey at the bottom, I decided to do more research and test drive it. We also test drove a Grand Cherokee for comparison. Although the Journey was compared with mid-sized SUVs like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Toyota Highlander online, I felt it was only right to drive one and see the difference. When compared to the Grand Cherokee, the Journey was a lower standard SUV. The Cherokee had leather, a sunroof, and a larger touch screen, whereas the Journey did not have leather or a sunroof and only a smaller touch screen. I also noticed that the online reviews of the Journey were for the 2.4L front-wheel-drive model, and I test drove the 3.6L all-wheel-drive model. It had the same engine as the Cherokee and drove very comparably; however, the Cherokee was a slightly better feeling ride. Another area where the Journey received poor reviews was for compartment space. Since it has a third row, there is little room back there if the third row is used. However, we have no thoughts of using the third row, and when laid flat, it has a ton of space. The tech is also behind the Cherokee, but it still has more tech than any car I have owned. I do wish it had Bluetooth. When I compared the Journey to the Escape and Renegade, the Journey was much better in my opinion. I'm 37, so I like the look better since the Escape looks like a 20-year-old girl's SUV, and the Renegade looks like a 20-year-old boy's SUV. The Journey looks like a boring dad SUV, and that is exactly what I am. Lol. Although it may not impress the guys at work, I am not worried about trying to compensate for anything. The price was almost the same as the two smaller SUVs. You'll be happy to know that we walked out of the dealer paying $24,000 for the V6 All-Wheel drive model. A few months in and we're really enjoying the Journey.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your SUV! I completely understand what you mean about Edmunds not always taking into account the different types of buyers out there. It sounds like you got an amazing deal on your vehicle, and I'm thrilled to hear that it's been exceptional for you.

I recently purchased the base American Value model and I am extremely satisfied with my decision. Although the RAV 4 and the CRV were strong contenders, I ultimately chose Dodge and I have no regrets. Not only did I save thousands off the sticker price compared to those two, but the vehicle is also beautiful inside and out with great build quality. My kids especially love the back seats that move and recline, making long trips much more comfortable. The rebates offered by Dodge were a great bonus that the other companies did not provide, making my decision even easier. Living in S. FL, I did not have a need or desire for a sunroof, so I do not feel like I missed out on anything. While the 2.5 may have less get up and go, the vehicle runs smoothly and will save me from any potential speeding tickets.

When I first went to the dealership, I had my heart set on buying a new Jeep. However, after test driving a few models such as the Patriot and Latitude, I found that I wasn't happy with the ride, comfort, or interiors. Additionally, my price point kept putting me in the 4cyl Jeeps. Having previously owned a Chevy Blazer and a couple of Jeep Cherokee Sports, I decided to test drive a new 2017 Journey Crossroad AWD on a whim. To my surprise, I was pleasantly surprised with my experience. After 9 months of ownership, I am still satisfied with my purchase, despite a few minor issues. Although the vehicle is not the most attractive, the 'boss' looking black color on the front grill package of my otherwise light gray (silver) vehicle is a nice touch. The heating and air conditioning can take a while to get going, and I miss the daytime auto-running lights, but these are minor issues. On the other hand, I love the roominess of the front seat area and the plenty of rear space, especially with both rows of seats folded down. The V6 acceleration is fine for my driving style, and quick acceleration when needed is adequate, like for merging into heavy traffic. I average about 25mpg at 70 mph on the highway, and a little better on cruise. In town, suburb driving around 21 mpg. I appreciate the somewhat basic electronics package, and although I rarely use Bluetooth, I do enjoy the Sirius radio. This is the first AWD vehicle I have owned, and I was a little apprehensive about it, but my first winter in the upper Midwest (Iowa) proved that it can handle the snow with ease. Overall, Dodge has done a good job winning me over, and I am happy with my purchase. Update: June 2019. I still own this vehicle and still agree with the above. The heating and cooling system works best when only one area is selected at a time. Attempting to heat or cool both the floor and dashboard simultaneously can strain the system. By selecting one area, the desired temperature is reached more quickly. I have not experienced any maintenance issues and appreciate the spaciousness and simplicity of the basic package. I highly recommend this vehicle. Update 1/25/24: I continue to own this vehicle, which now has 83K miles on it. Recently, I had to replace one of the rear wheel bearings, but otherwise, I have had no issues. However, I have noticed a significant blind spot caused by the windshield frame where it meets the driver and front passenger side doors. This has made it difficult to see vehicles approaching from the left or right, especially at 4-way stops. I believe this may be due to the airbags located in the frame. Additionally, while I previously did not feel the need for a backup camera, I now wish the vehicle had one due to its size. Overall, I still find the vehicle to be reliable, spacious, and low maintenance.

I recently purchased a 2018 Dodge Journey Crossroads with all the extra features. During the test drive, the car drove great and I was impressed with its nice appearance for the price tag. However, within the first week of owning the car, I experienced some issues with the power steering and acceleration going out while driving on two separate occasions. Although the car was still under factory warranty, Dodge was unable to find any problems. I have read similar stories from other car owners. Due to the safety concerns, I decided to purchase another car two weeks later. Unfortunately, I was given 4k negative equity for only driving the car for one week. In my opinion, I would advise others to stay away from the Dodge Journey as it has been a nightmare car for me. I wish I never crossed paths with it.

I am an experienced Dodge owner with a collection of 5 vehicles, including 2 Durango's, 1 Ram, and a Challenger. Unfortunately, my latest purchase, a vehicle for my wife, experienced multiple issues within the first 5 months of ownership. Despite taking it to the dealer for repairs, the problems persisted, including the car starting on its own, the AC turning on by itself, doors not unlocking, and the car not starting even after the dealer claimed it was fixed. Despite my loyalty to the brand and having spent over $100,000 on Dodge vehicles, the complaint line only offered a simple apology. As a confident and knowledgeable Dodge owner, I expected better customer service and support from the company.

On June 1, 2014, I was getting off a highway onto a ramp. I stepped on the brakes to slow down to the ramp speed limit, but suddenly the brakes locked and the vehicle came to an abrupt halt with the ignition still running. As expected, everyone in the vehicle lurched forward. It was a major scare! Since then, I have not had another incident. However, I have limited confidence in the vehicle now and am not willing to take it on long distance trips.

I purchased my 09 Dodge Journey used in July 2009 and that's where my love for the Journey began. I loved that it was a 3 seater with a v6 engine, and it was perfect for our family outings. However, around 40,000 miles, my Journey started having starting problems. Although everything powered worked, it would take 5 minutes to start. At 50,000 miles, the starting issues became more frequent and took longer to start. I took it to the dealer 3 times in one month, and they initially thought it was the battery, but it turned out to be the WIN Module and FOB key. The cost to fix it without an extended warranty was $800-$1000, but luckily I had an extended warranty and only paid $100. If you're a current Journey owner, I highly recommend purchasing an extended warranty.

The refrigerated compartment is not functional and the passenger side door is easily accessible from the driver's seat. However, it may not be suitable for regular use of the third row as it is very compact and the seats are difficult to move. Additionally, there is no storage available when the third seat is up. The car lacks pick up when the A/C is on and the floor shifter can be easily moved out of gear, which can be dangerous. It is worth noting that the car is made entirely of plastic, which makes cleaning difficult, so it is recommended to opt for leather seats. If you are looking to downsize to save gas money, this car may not be the best option due to its poor gas mileage.
