Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
- Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
- Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
- Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
- Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.
When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Dodge Journey 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. My wife and I absolutely love our Dodge Journey Crossroads Plus, despite some negative reviews online. It's spacious, comfortable, and has plenty of power with the 4 cylinder engine. The Crossroads Plus trim gives it a sharp look, and the infotainment system is arguably the best in the world. You can customize it with all kinds of add-ons, but we opted for key upgrades like the 8.4 Uconnect system, power seats, and back-up camera. The only minor downside is that the 4-speed transmission can be a bit choppy at lower speeds, but it's not noticeable on the highway. Overall, this is the perfect affordable SUV for families who need plenty of space and a smooth ride.

I recently decided to downgrade from my Ford Expedition Limited and started looking at various SUVs such as the Chevy Traverse, Ford Explorer, and Nissan Pathfinder. Although they were all great options, the prices were not within my budget. However, during a recent trip to Boston, I rented a Dodge Journey to drive to South Carolina for my nephew's graduation from boot camp. I was impressed with how well it handled, its great gas mileage, and its spacious interior which comfortably accommodated myself and my two children aged 11 and 8. In June, I came across a black Journey Crossroad AWD with black rims and an all-black interior that was for sale and decided to check it out. It was exactly what I was looking for - sporty and unique, standing out from the rest of the mid-size SUVs. The price was also just right for me, as I wanted to be more realistic with maintenance costs after the warranty expired. Although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles such as heated/cooling seats, all-electric seats, electronic push-button trunk, sensor backup camera, or a sunroof, it has everything I need. While having all those features would be nice, I didn't want to spend an extra $10-$15k for them. I have been driving my Dodge Journey Crossroad AWD for 4 months now and it has been amazing. It meets all my family's needs and still has plenty of room for my 11-year-old son's hockey bag and two sticks. I highly recommend this SUV to anyone who wants something new but at a more affordable price compared to other competitors with a 3rd row, even if it doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

Great buy! It's possible that some of the wheel/brake issues are caused by the emergency brake pedal being sensitive and drivers not realizing it's engaged. Mechanics sometimes forget to release it after servicing, and it can be difficult to detect if it's slightly engaged, causing brakes to wear out more quickly.

I purchased this vehicle with 111,000 miles on it and I have to say, I didn't love it at first. However, the interior caught my eye and it has since grown on me. I've owned my Journey for a year now and have had to put some money into it, mostly due to sticky calipers. Other than that, I have no major complaints. It's been a very comfortable ride and I prefer the quality of the interior finishes over any of the Chevys, Hondas or Kias that I've driven. It handles very well in snow and on icy roads.

Hi there! As a mother with a child who has a life-threatening disease, I understand the importance of having a reliable and comfortable car. I recently traded in my Grand Caravan for a 2012 Journey and I absolutely love it! Although I wasn't a fan of owning a minivan, even with all the options we had, the Journey has been a great alternative. The only downside is the lack of TVs, but that's easily fixed with my daughter's iPad and portable DVD player. The wheelchair fits perfectly in the back with the 3rd row folded down, and the emergency medical supplies fit nicely in the storage area. I drive to our local children's hospital 2-3 times a week (40 miles one way) and our mpg is averaging 21.5, which is fantastic! The interior is also beautiful, with great attention to detail. Thanks for listening!

I purchased a 2012 Dodge Journey SXT and unfortunately experienced transmission issues at only 1600 miles. Despite attempts to resolve the issue, including flashing the computer, the problem persisted. It is disappointing to hear that Chrysler's engineering department considers this a characteristic of the vehicle. It is important for car manufacturers to take responsibility for any issues with their products. I hope that Chrysler will address this issue and work towards a solution for their customers and dealerships.

I experienced multiple issues with the car, particularly with the transmission. Despite being advised by the dealership to get a flush, the problem persisted and worsened within two weeks, resulting in slipping and difficulty shifting. The solution was to replace the transmission, which cost me $2600 for a rebuilt one. Unfortunately, the dealership did not offer any assistance or coverage, citing that I was over the warranty by 3000 miles. This experience was disappointing and has left me with a negative impression of Dodge products.

Vehicle year: 2010
I purchased my 2010 Journey used and found all prior service records in the vehicle. I was confident that I was buying a dependable vehicle. However, after 2 years and 1 month, I have had to put over $1000 into new brakes, calipers, rotors, and axle seal. The estimate as of today is for $3838, which includes a new intake manifold, instrument cluster, SKIM module, tune-up, transmission flush, and computer update. I just replaced the axle seal. Unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues such as power loss in the center console, steering column, and doors, slow shifting, and sometimes it does nothing when attempting to start it. Additionally, it vibrates horribly at high speeds. Despite these issues, I have been servicing it every 3000 miles and addressing issues promptly. I am disappointed with my experience and will not be purchasing a Dodge or Chrysler product again.

Vehicle year: 2010
Let me start by telling you what I loved about my Journey. The car was incredibly spacious, making it perfect for travelling with my daughter and her softball gear, as well as adding teammates for distant away games. The drive was comfortable and the sound system was killer, which was a bonus when travelling with teenagers. However, I did experience some issues with the car. About 4 months after purchasing my 2010 Journey used in March of 2013, I had to have it towed in because it wouldn't start. The security system had been triggered within the ignition, causing it to not start. Although it was frustrating, the issue was resolved and I was back on the road. A few months later, I had to replace the brakes, pads and rotors for the front and back. This seemed unusual for a car with only 43,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I later found out that the dealership I had purchased the car from was not trustworthy and was trying to replace things that didn't need replacing. Despite these issues, I still enjoyed driving the car. However, I am currently experiencing transmission issues and it is slipping. It is frustrating that I cannot check the transmission fluid myself due to the lack of a dipstick. Overall, I have had some issues with my Journey, but I still appreciate the positive aspects of the car. I may consider other brands in the future, but I will always remember the good times I had in my Journey.

My 2015 journey has 60,000 miles and the transmission is failing prematurely. This car is poorly made and I strongly advise against purchasing it.
