Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
- Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
- Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
- Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
- Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.
When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

- Components: SEATS
- Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Dodge Journey 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Vehicle year: 2018 It's true that Dodge hasn't updated the Journey since 2011 and it doesn't have some of the advanced electronics that its competitors do. However, if you're looking for an SUV at a great price, the Dodge Journey is the perfect choice. I've been driving it for a while now and I find it very comfortable and it handles the road well. I highly recommend getting the optional V6 engine as it's just right for this size of vehicle. I test drove the 4Cyl. version and found it to be underpowered. Overall, I think the Dodge Journey is a great option and dealers have some amazing deals going on right now.

Vehicle year: 2013 I purchased this used 2013 Dodge Journey last September. It's the SXT with a V6 engine and 6-speed automatic. This vehicle is fantastic to ride in and is very quiet inside. I used to own a Honda CRV, but I replaced it with this Journey. The CRV was noisy and rode rough, but the Journey is quiet, rides very smoothly, and has excellent power. The V6 engine has more acceleration than I need. I drove the car to Florida and back, and it passed 90 percent of the cars going up inclines in the mountains. On steep upgrades, it outperformed most of the other cars and trucks on the road. It got 26 MPG on the freeway and 23 MPG in the city. I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews on this vehicle. It is the best vehicle I have ever owned. It currently has 122,000 miles on it, burns no oil at all, and is smooth and quiet. The AC works perfectly.

Vehicle year: 2012 I'm so glad to hear that you're considering buying another one! This vehicle is truly amazing. The 8.4 inch screen with Nav is incredibly user-friendly, and I completely agree that other vehicles can be overwhelming with too many buttons. The ride is fantastic, and the leather finish is of top-notch quality.

Vehicle year: 2009 I had some trouble starting my 2009 Dodge Journey SE, and eventually it stopped starting altogether. After replacing the battery, which worked for a while, I found a great shop that diagnosed the issue and replaced the Power Integrated Distribution Module RL692302-AE. Although the part from the Dodge Dealer was quite expensive at $919.00, it was definitely worth it to finally solve the problem. Now my Journey starts up with no issues at all! I just wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else. Hope you're all happy and riding again!

Vehicle year: 2009
I have owned my 2009 Dodge Journey since July 2008 and have experienced a few issues, including two recalls for the brakes and power inverter connectors. Although these issues were resolved, I am currently facing a challenge with water entering the car on the driver's side, which is causing the carpet and foam underneath to become soaked. Despite having the door seals changed, the problem persists. However, I am confident that the issue will be resolved as I am taking the car in for the third time tomorrow. It is worth noting that my car has only 15,500 miles on it, and as senior citizens living on a fixed income, we cannot afford to purchase another vehicle with one year still owed on this one. While I am frustrated with the situation, I am determined to find a solution and remain optimistic about the outcome.

Vehicle year: 2010
I have owned about 20 Dodge vehicles over the years, but unfortunately, I have had a lot of problems with my latest one. The brake system has been particularly troublesome, and I have had to replace the pads and rotors twice in just 10 months. It's frustrating to know that Chrysler is aware of this issue but is unwilling to take responsibility. Additionally, the car model can only take one type of tire, which can be expensive at over $220 per tire, and there have been several recalls. One of the recalls is particularly concerning as the car can cut off due to the key fob system slipping from on to acc, which can be very dangerous and result in a loss of power steering and brakes. Despite speaking with Chrysler about these issues, they have denied any responsibility. Needless to say, I am disappointed and will not be revisiting Dodge.

Vehicle year: 2009
I read the reviews before purchasing my 2009 Dodge Journey in May of 2012. Although I have had this car for 2 1/2 years, it seems there have been some issues. I have had to replace multiple batteries, change the brakes nearly every 10,000 miles, and the tires have not been great. Additionally, I have had to replace a wheel sensor and the key fob doesn't always work, causing some delay in starting the car. There have also been some electrical problems where the alarm goes off and takes a while to stop. However, I believe that with proper maintenance, these issues can be resolved. It is worth noting that the value of the car has decreased significantly since I purchased it, but this is a common issue with many vehicles. If you are considering purchasing this car, I would recommend doing your research and making an informed decision.

Like many of you, I have also faced issues with my Dodge Journey. I came across this link http://www.change.org/petitions/dodge-journey-s-defects which sheds light on the problems faced by many others like us. It is disheartening to see that Dodge has not taken any action to fix these issues. The defects in brakes, win module and more have cost us $300 to $600 each time. I urge you to take a minute to sign the petition and share the link with others. Thank you, Mike.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2009 Chrysler-brand vehicle. While I have had to replace the transmission once, as well as the brakes and tires a few times, I have found that regular maintenance has helped keep my car running smoothly. Recently, I had to replace the motor mount and starter, which was a bit of a hassle, but I'm glad I took care of it. While I understand that every car can have its quirks, I still enjoy driving my Chrysler and appreciate the value it has provided me over the years. Thanks for listening!
