Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.
Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.
Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems
The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.
- Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
- Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
- Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
- Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
- Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
- Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
- Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
- Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.
When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.
Do Dodge Journeys have problems?
While the Dodge Journey may be reliable, some model years can run into issues like interior water leaks, a malfunctioning remote keyless entry system, an overheating engine, head gasket damage, and premature wear on brakes.

- Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

Dodge Journey 2014
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
- VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Vehicle year: 2015
I've been driving the Journey for a couple of weeks now and I must say, I'm extremely impressed with the initial quality and overall impression it has left on me. As a family of four, we find that it's just the right size - spacious enough for the kids and our belongings, but not too large. The selection of features, quality, and performance make it a clear winner in my book. Despite Edmunds dinging its fuel mileage, I find that it's actually better than expected. And considering the 6-cylinder engine and the fact that this isn't a small vehicle, I'm more than satisfied with what I get. The storage space is ample and the materials used are top-notch, making you wonder if this is really a Dodge! Overall, I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I have to go down and pay my auto tax today. Ouch. But I have to say that I really enjoy driving this car as much or more than any I have bought, including sports cars. It's odd that it doesn't have a high rating due to early problems, especially with brakes, until they increased the rotor and brake pads. Also, it's been around for a long time as far as the car world is concerned, with the first production sales dating back to 2007 with only a few minor changes. It's not great in the front side crash test, but if you hit them head-on, I guess it's okay. I like the power to weight ratio of the V-6 and the better suspension of this model combined with AWD. It makes a difference in cornering and curves, as I found in my test drives. It's definitely not a sports car, but it's enjoyable to drive with some cargo room. I don't like where they placed the battery, but I guess they ran out of room. I do like all the hidden cargo compartments. After a month, there are no rattles and the seats are comfortable. They're not as good as the space age seats in my wife's Nissan Murano, but they're still good. I just really like this car for some reason. (Review-Dodge Journey)

Our journey has been such a pleasant surprise! I was amazed to see how different the opinions were between expert reviews and those of actual owners. Personally, I have had no issues with acceleration, even when fully loaded. The first two rows provide ample space for adults, while the third row is perfect for kids. The ride is simply awesome! The cabin is quiet and the steering makes it feel like a much smaller SUV. I absolutely love this SUV and would highly recommend it! Don't just take the experts' word for it!

Vehicle year: 2009
We traded in our 2005 Chevy Equinox with 53,000 miles for this Journey and we have not regretted it once. The leather seats are comfortable and clean, and the DVD system and Satellite radio are fantastic. Although we have read about brake issues, we have not experienced any problems with our original rotors, and we have not noticed any steering wheel shaking. The car has plenty of room and storage, and while the third row seating is only suitable for kids, it is convenient if needed. We will be taking this car on a 2500 mile round trip from Nebraska to South Carolina in July, and we have no concerns about its reliability or comfort. My wife loves the back-up camera and all the other R/T amenities. Overall, we are very happy with our purchase!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Dodge Journey. I purchased it used with only 3000 miles from a Dodge dealership in late 2017. I had my pick of over 10 of these SUVs used as loans and rentals. After some friendly haggling, I was able to drive off the lot with my new car for a total cost of $15,321.86, which I thought was a great deal. It has the stock 4 cyl. engine which is perfect for hauling loads or a trailer of less than 1000 pounds. The performance is fair, certainly not a race horse, but it will get you from point A to point B. My Journey has minimal electronic stuff as I prefer to use Google Maps off of my phone and listen mainly to news radio for information and traffic reports. So far, I have not had any maintenance issues. I do get a little wind noise from the roof rack, but I still recommend it. If you have a lead foot, the transmission may not be the smoothest, but the seating comfort is good and the carrying capacity is fair. Visibility out of the Journey is not as good as it should be, but installing 3

**BE ADVISED** My husband gave me a brand new 2014 Dodge Journey as a gift last year, but unfortunately, it has turned out to be the biggest nightmare in our automobile purchasing history. The car always had a lag when stepping on the gas, but we were told that the reason was because it was a 4.0 and had little power. We accepted that answer and, other than the lag, were happy with the car. However, when the car was approximately 4 months old, the touch screen started going out and would turn black for a little under a minute before turning back on. We took it in for a diagnostic check, but were told that nothing was wrong and there was nothing they could do since they could not tell where the problem was coming from. This issue started happening more and more often. Then, when the car was between 10 and 11 months old, the speedometer went out of whack. The dial was reading correctly, showing I was traveling at 65mph while the digital screen was showing I was traveling at 115mph. That night, on my ride home from work, the touch screen went out along with the lights. So, here I was, traveling on a dark highway by myself with no lights. I pulled over to the shoulder of the highway and turned the car off, waited a few minutes and turned it back on. When I turned it back on, it drove as normal and all the lights worked. I filled the tank with gas and continued my drive home. When I turned onto my street, my car began making a very loud knocking noise. When I stepped on the gas, the noise grew louder. Luckily, I had picked up my 2 sons on the way home. My boys had to get out and push the car 3 blocks to my house since I was the only one who could steer. The next morning, my husband towed the car to the dealership. The mechanics then told my husband that we had put the wrong gas in the car and destroyed the engine. My son had pumped the gas the night before and was certain he used unleaded. The gas station attendant was very helpful and even pulled up the tape from the night we were there to help us out. However, when my husband went to the dealership to inform them of the issue, he was met with resistance. The mechanic claimed that we used ethanol, which my husband pointed out is present in all gas. The mechanic then claimed that it smelled like 85% ethanol and that this was what caused the engine to fail. This seemed unlikely to us, as it's hard to imagine how someone could smell a percentage in a liquid or gas. When my husband asked if the gas had been tested, the answer was no. Unfortunately, my car was in the shop for almost 3 weeks and we were given a rental car that was too small for our family of 7. We were unable to go anywhere as a family during this time, which was frustrating. After getting my car back, we started experiencing problems with the lights, touch screen, and speedometer again. When we contacted corporate, they offered us 2 years of free oil changes, which we didn't feel was enough. They then asked us to take the car back to the dealership, promising a rental with a 3rd row. However, when my husband took the car in, he was told that there were no rentals available. This was very disappointing, especially after a long shift at work. We feel stuck with this car, which has caused us a lot of trouble and heartache. We strongly advise against buying a Dodge Journey, especially for the safety of your family. #dontbuyadodge

I have had several issues with this car and have spent a considerable amount of time at the dealership. However, I am confident that I can find a solution to this problem. While I have owned Dodges in the past, this particular model has not met my expectations. I believe that if enough people come together to address these issues, the manufacturer will take notice and take action. Despite the current challenges, I am determined to find a resolution and ensure that I am getting the quality I deserve.

My 2011 Dodge Journey Crew has been experiencing issues with the battery draining, resulting in three trips to the dealer for repairs. Despite Chrysler's lack of a solution, I am confident that the issue will be resolved. While I have concerns about the reliability of the car, I am optimistic that it will be resolved and I will be able to trust it once again. I believe that any potential safety concerns can be addressed and mitigated. Overall, I rate my car as having some issues, but I am confident that they will be resolved.

On June 1, 2014, I was getting off a highway onto a ramp. I stepped on the brakes to slow down to the ramp speed limit, but suddenly the brakes locked and the vehicle came to an abrupt halt with the ignition still running. As expected, everyone in the vehicle lurched forward. It was a major scare! Since then, I have not had another incident. However, I have limited confidence in the vehicle now and am not willing to take it on long distance trips.

I really wanted to enjoy driving this car, but unfortunately, I have had a lot of issues with it since day one. If you search for 'Dodge Journey problems' on Google, you will find that I am not alone in my experience. The brakes wear out quickly and the sticky caliper issue is a real concern. Additionally, there have been electrical problems, rusting of the body, starting issues, and even premature engine failure due to camshaft sensor issues and metal shavings in the engine. Despite the comfortable and nice interior, this car is not reliable and will require a lot of maintenance, which can be expensive. My experience with this vehicle has convinced me to avoid any Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products in the future.
