The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' Dodge brand for model years 2009 to 2020 over a single generation, with a facelift for the 2011 model year. The Journey was styled by Ryan Nagode, and was marketed globally in both left- and right-hand drive, including as the Fiat Freemont.

Internally identified as the JC49, the Journey shares FCA's global D-segment platform with the Dodge Avenger and a nearly identical wheelbase to the outgoing short-wheelbase (SWB) Dodge Caravan.

Having debuted at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Journey subsequently appeared at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. All models were manufactured in Mexico at FCA's Toluca Assembly facility, with just over 1.1 million manufactured before production ended in 2020.

Common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been in production from 2009 to 2020. While the model has received positive reviews in later years, the initial models faced a variety of issues, ranging from the drivetrain to the electrical system. These problems affected the vehicle's performance and reliability, making early models a riskier choice for potential buyers.

  1. Brake Problems: Brake issues were the most prominent problem, especially in the 2009 model. These problems include premature brake and rotor wear, noisy brakes, and calipers that lock up. Such issues pose a significant safety risk for drivers, especially those who frequently travel at high speeds.
  2. Engine Issues: Engine problems were the second most common issue in faulty Dodge Journey years. These problems include a dying engine while driving, ticking sounds from the engine, and a check engine light that remains on. Engine issues can be both expensive and dangerous, making it crucial to invest in a more reliable model.
  3. Interior Accessory Troubles: Interior accessory troubles, such as issues with the vehicle's door or window, can be both a nuisance and an unnecessary expense. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle's door to the car's window and everything in between.
  4. Interior Water Leaks: Interior water leaks can be a significant issue, especially in the 2010 model. This problem can lead to costly repairs and should be considered when purchasing a used Dodge Journey.
  5. Transmission Issues: Transmission problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  6. Electrical Problems: Electrical problems, such as issues with the remote keyless entry system, can be a common issue in the Dodge Journey.
  7. Overheating Engine: Overheating engine issues can be a significant problem in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  8. Worn Out Brakes: Worn out brakes can be a safety risk and an unnecessary expense in the Dodge Journey.
  9. Head Gasket Problems: Head gasket problems can be a significant issue in the Dodge Journey, affecting the vehicle's performance and reliability.
  10. Malfunctioning Remote Keyless Entry: Malfunctioning remote keyless entry can be a significant inconvenience in the Dodge Journey.

When considering a used Dodge Journey, it is essential to research specific model years and consult consumer reviews before purchasing. It is also recommended to invest in thorough inspections and understand the vehicle's history to avoid future headaches. While the Dodge Journey has seen its ups and downs, the latter years presented better options for those seeking a balance of price, performance, and reliability.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-23
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 3C4PDCAB7JT
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While care was parked, daughter (11yo) leaned around passenger seat with her forearm against the left side of the head rest to talk to her mother. Randomly and suddenly the head rest safety mechanism deployed. No one was seriously injured but it did leave a mark on my daughter's arm. Looks like the plastic inside is cracked on the right side where the pin holds the restraining pin that keeps the headrest from deploying. Have not taken yet to the dealer. There were no warning signs prior to deployment. Potentially could've been worse if someone was sitting in the seat when it occurred.

I went out one day and the headrests were both opened up. This is a known problem for Dodge (at the time it happened, I researched) and they did extend the warranty for ten years; however, my vehicle is a 2010 so past that extended warranty. This is an expensive fix. I am a senior on a fixed income and wonder if there is any way to remedy this problem?

Dodge Journey 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-30
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-01
  • VIN: 3C4PDDEG9ET
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The ABS module has failed. There was a recall R61 issued previously for this issue of moisture causing ABS module failures. The original recall was completed on this vehicle [XXX]. There is no documentation that the ABS module itself was replaced at that time since this is a tiered recall. The ABS module has now failed and there is evidence on the electrical plug that moisture was present during a recent inspection by an ASE certified mechanic. I took the car to Academy CJD dealership in Tipton, Indiana and they refused to perform the recall again since it supposedly had already been completed. They wanted to charge me a fee to 'diagnose' further. I contend that even though the recall or partial recall was previously completed, the ABS has failed due to the issue the original recall was supposed to prevent. I have a picture of the ABS electrical connector showing evidence of shorting due to moisture. Please let me know if Dodge should be required to complete the recall again, since the ABS failed again. Latest negative Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Jaleel Sawayn 2025-09-28

    Vehicle year: 2011

In the past 18 months, I have experienced multiple issues with my car, including the need for three sets of brakes, a replacement radio, random transmission shifts, poor acceleration, and low-quality tires. Despite having to bring my car into the shop nine times during this period, I have not received satisfactory assistance from the complaint line. I am concerned about the safety of my vehicle and the potential consequences of any failures. I believe that the manufacturer should take responsibility for these issues and provide a solution. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Tate Ullrich 2025-09-28

    Vehicle year: 2009

I would not recommend purchasing this car. Although I have owned it for 5 years, I have had to replace the brakes and rotors three times, and the tires three times as well. Unfortunately, when it rains, water leaks into the car through the vents, lights, and doors, which has caused mold to grow in the floor compartments. Additionally, the DVD player screen has not worked in 4 years, likely due to water damage. The interior is also in poor condition, with many parts falling off and the transmission not functioning well. I have had to replace the fuel injectors twice, and the car has cut off on me while driving. Occasionally, the car does not start up and the antifreeze leaks out, despite having had it repaired. There have also been several electrical issues. Overall, I have had a very negative experience with this car and would not recommend it. Thank you for considering my feedback.

  3. Javon Runolfsdottir 2025-09-25

    Vehicle year: 2013

I understand the frustration you have experienced with your Dodge Journey. However, it is important to note that every vehicle has its own unique set of issues that may arise over time. It is commendable that you have taken the necessary steps to address the problems you have encountered. As a confident solution, I would recommend seeking the advice of a certified mechanic who can provide a thorough diagnosis of the electronic drain on your battery. With their expertise, they can provide a long-term solution that will save you time and money in the future. It is important to remember that with proper maintenance and care, any vehicle can provide reliable transportation for years to come. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

  4. Jamie Marvin 2025-09-19

    Vehicle year: 2010

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share a recent experience I had with my car. I was driving on the interstate with no traffic in front of me when suddenly my engine light and traction control light came on. The car started shaking violently and lost power, slowing down to 30mph within seconds. It was quite scary! I managed to safely pull over to the side of the road and had my car towed to the dealership. They initially claimed that I hit the gas and brake at the same time, causing the traction control to lock and the engine light to come on. However, a mechanic told me that this was not true and that it's actually impossible to hit both pedals at the same time. After further inspection, they found a problem with the brake rotors and replaced them. I'm just glad that everything is fixed now and I can drive safely again. Take care!

  5. Garrick Denesik 2025-09-15

    Vehicle year: 2009

We have owned our car for less than two years. We purchased it in 2010 with less than 20,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, we have had to replace our brakes, have our entire transmission rebuilt, and have our starter replaced. Currently, the car will not start and the dealership is unsure of the cause. As a stay-at-home mom who does not drive much, it is frustrating to have such an unreliable car. It is a 50/50 chance whether the car will start or not, and if it does, I then get my child ready and into the car. There is no point in getting him ready if we cannot go anywhere. I am looking forward to getting rid of this car.

Latest positive Dodge Journey car reviews

  1. Brycen Larkin 2025-10-08

    Vehicle year: 2016

I did a lot of research on SUVs of all makes since Jan '16, after my second vehicle went to car heaven (it was 14 years old). I'm very analytical when it comes to spending my hard-earned cash, so I wanted to make sure I did my homework! I visited a Hyundai dealership in Rockwall, but unfortunately, no one was willing to deal, so I left. However, the dealership right next door had great people! They did all they could to get me into a Honda CRV, which was almost a sell because those cars are awesome. But, I didn't want to make a hasty decision without doing my research and knowing exactly what trim/package I wanted. Although their offers were fabulous and they were willing to earn my business with extras, I had my heart set on a Dodge Journey, and I was determined to find it or go home and start researching the Honda CRV! They even called me (although too late) to let me know they could get me what I wanted from one of their sister dealerships. That's great customer service and follow-up! In the end, I purchased a Certified Pre-Owned from ROCKWALL DODGE. Melvin, my salesperson, was fabulous. He took our offers seriously, and we made the deal. There was a miscommunication snafu regarding add-ons, but this company was quick to make it right. ROCKWALL DODGE wanted to make me happy not only right then, but in the long years to come, not only with my vehicle but with my entire experience. And they have! Job well done ROCKWALL DODGE! The only thing is that I am missing the key to my wheel locks, but I'm sure this can be resolved. These guys are great! The vehicle is immaculate inside and out, with only one miniature ding on the passenger rear door, which took me a while to find after I got home. My vehicle is a V-6 FWD, not 4cyl AWD.I absolutely love the 'beastly power' of this vehicle, but I always try to use it responsibly (wink). On a recent trip from Rockwall to my home, I was able to cover just under 400 miles on a single tank of gas, and even after driving 20-25 miles daily for a week, I still didn't need to refuel! The color of the car is like a well-tailored power suit for a businessman (insert wolf whistle here). The cargo space is simply amazing, especially with the third row folded down. I use it to carry my ladder and still have plenty of room for my vacation luggage. There are also many hidden compartments for extra storage. The only thing I plan to add to this amazing vehicle is an AMP step on both sides, which will drop down when I open the door. I'm only 5'0 tall and I usually enjoy climbing, but at this point in my life, I can afford to take it easy. So ladies, don't be intimidated by this vehicle. It handles like a dream, and if you have kids with lots of stuff, or if they have friends with lots of stuff, you'll still have plenty of room for your own belongings.

  2. Talon Koss 2025-10-07

    Vehicle year: 2019

I love how Dodge has kept the style of this model consistent since its release. The car still looks great! Moving from a base model Sorento to the Crossroad version was a huge upgrade for us. If you're considering a Journey, I highly recommend the Crossroad edition. We tested the SE and SXT models and they don't compare. Additionally, I suggest opting for the V6 with all-wheel drive, especially if you live in an area with regular snow and ice. It handles beautifully. The only downside we've experienced so far is the low gas mileage, which is around 17 mpg in town. However, given all the other positives, it's a trade-off I'm willing to make.

The Dodge Journey is an exceptional vehicle! I'm so glad to hear that your wife has the Dodge Journey Crossroad V6 AWD, and that it has been such a reliable workhorse for your family. It's great to know that the vehicle drove so well, even with a newborn and a toddler, on major highways and roads, and in any weather conditions. It's also impressive that you drove the car cross country and to Canada without feeling tired at all. I can see why you fell in love with the Journey - it has great handling, no road noise, and a very comfortable ride. The visibility and commanding driving position are also fantastic features. Plus, the many hiding compartments and easy-to-clean interior and exterior make it a practical choice. As someone who previously owned two Subaru Outbacks, I can see why you give this vehicle a 100%. Well done, Dodge!

I'm really excited about all the adventures I'll be able to go on with my new Dodge. Thanks for listening!

Bought a car last month and I absolutely love it! It has a quiet and smooth ride with plenty of power when needed. Although it's not ideal for grocery shopping, it's a great highway cruiser that can tow up to 2500 lbs. The interior features are fantastic, especially the 8
