2017 Volkswagen Touareg problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Touareg (German pronunciation: ) is a car produced by German automaker Volkswagen Group since 2002 at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant. Considered to be the first luxury mid-size SUV from Volkswagen, the vehicle was named after the nomadic Tuareg people, inhabitants of the Saharan interior in North Africa. Originally, the Touareg was developed together with the Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7, and as of October 2020, the Touareg was developed together with the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga and the Lamborghini Urus. This family of vehicles are all unibody SUVs with independent suspension. The first generation (2002–2010) offered five, six, eight, ten and twelve-cylinder engine choices.

Development

The Volkswagen Touareg (internally designated Typ 7L) was developed as a joint venture project by Porsche and the Volkswagen Group, involving the Audi and Volkswagen brands. During the initial development phase of the Typ 7L and the early years of its production, Porsche operated as an independent entity, not affiliated with the Volkswagen Group. The sports car market is known for its fluctuations. In response to these market conditions, Porsche's CEO at the time, Wendelin Wiedeking, sought to diversify the company's product range. This strategy included the introduction of Porsche's first four-door vehicle. A team in Weissach, Germany, of over 300, led by Klaus-Gerhard Wolpert, developed the Volkswagen Group PL71 platform. Now it is shared between the Touareg, the Audi Q7, and the Porsche Cayenne. However, there are styling, equipment, performance, and technical differences between them. The Touareg and Cayenne both seat five, while the Q7's stretched wheelbase accommodates a third row for seven passengers.

The Volkswagen Touareg is built at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Bratislava, Slovakia, alongside the Audi Q7. The Cayenne is assembled by Porsche in Leipzig, Germany, at a facility built for Cayenne production.

Due to the demand and the exchange rates of euros against the US dollar, as well as different pricing and environmental policies in the US, the V6 and V8 engine variants make up most of Volkswagen's American Touareg offering. Compared to other Volkswagen-branded vehicles sold in the US, which are aimed at the mass market, Touaregs came in more upscale trims and competed with other luxury crossover SUVs.

Common 2017 Volkswagen Touareg problems

The Volkswagen Touareg, a flagship sedan option from the well-known VW manufacturer, has been produced since 2002 and is known for its excellent sales. However, not all years of the Touareg have garnered excellent performance and reviews. When considering purchasing a Touareg, it is essential to know the common issues and the worst years to avoid.

The Volkswagen Touareg is known for several issues, including fuel pump failure, excessive tire wear, brake pad and rotor wear, and coolant leaks.

When it comes to the 2017 Volkswagen Touareg, common complaints include engine and steering issues.

The 2017 Touareg did not have the TDI engine available in the U.S., as the last year for it was 2015. Therefore, potential buyers in the U.S. should be aware of this when considering purchasing a 2017 Touareg.

When looking for a used Touareg, buyers will likely find the most choice on a 2012 vehicle, as it was the best global sales year for the model

. The original model design was facelifted for the 2015 model year, with prominent changes including headlights that became Xenon units and a mild exterior styling tweak

. Additionally, there are safety updates, such as a system that would apply the brakes after a crash to bring the vehicle to a stop as quickly as possible

When considering the diesel engines, there are various specifications to look out for, as most used buyers will likely be looking at a diesel

. However, it is essential to note that the diesel emissions scandal affected the three-liter V6 TDI engine, which was found to have a defeat device for emissions testing

. Therefore, expect to find at least one if not multiple recalls for ECU module and gearbox module updates if you live in America

In summary, when considering purchasing a Volkswagen Touareg, it is essential to be aware of the common issues and the worst years to avoid. The 2017 Touareg has common complaints of engine and steering issues, and potential buyers should be aware that the TDI engine was not available in the U.S. for this model year. Additionally, buyers should be aware of the diesel emissions scandal and the potential recalls for the diesel engines. By being informed, potential buyers can make a more informed decision when considering purchasing a Volkswagen Touareg.

What is the disadvantage of Volkswagen Touareg?

One of the most common issues that has plagued the Touareg is electrical issues. Over the years, many owners have complained about power windows, door locks, interior lighting, and infotainment system issues. A common problem that has been reported is the vehicle's wiring harnesses.

How many miles will a Volkswagen Touareg last?

A typical Volkswagen Touareg has the potential to go for around 300,000 miles with excellent care. This number is solid and something to boast about for VW, though to get to this point, you must keep up with the care of your machine or it will die far sooner.

Is Touareg expensive to maintain?

The Touareg is a big, heavy, complex 4x4 that was expensive when new and remains just as expensive to fix when older, especially if you use main dealers. And when they are older they are more likely to be suffering from parts wearing out and / or breaking.

Which Touareg engine is best?

What it's like to drive, and how quiet it is. The entry-level engine for the VW Touareg range is the 3.0 TDI V6 and we reckon it's the one to go for. With 228bhp, it gives you all the grunt you could ever need, officially sprinting from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, and can tow up to 3,500kg.

Is A Touareg A Good car?

Is the Volkswagen Touareg a good car? The Volkswagen Touareg may not have quite the badge cachet of the Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE, but nevertheless, it's a big, spacious, high-tech SUV that's also very comfortable. Think of the Touareg, then, as Waitrose rather than Harrods Food Hall.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-13
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP3HD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased a 2017 Volkswagen Touareg V6 in October 2023. A problem with the vehicle revealed itself right away. It was consuming too much oil. Oil splatter is present on the hood, the car doors, the back bumper and built up oil residue is present in both tailpipes. Oil has to be added in about three week intervals. The vehicle is displaying the same issues as the vehicles recalled under recall number 21V321000 and I believe this vehicle should be added. I have taken the car to two shops that have confirmed the over consumption. Please evaluate.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-05
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP8HD
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle has an internal oil drain system that slowly leaks oil past the pistons into the combustion chamber of the engine causing the engine to burn oil. This is very dangerous when smoke exits the vehicle from the exhaust and into the air that could be inhaled by others. This same issue over time can cause an engine fire after the exhaust system is entirely clogged by the burned oil residue in the exhaust system. I have spoken with other 2017 VW Touareg owners who have the same exact issue and the problem is widely reported online by other drivers in forums.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-20
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP0HD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Exhaust line for cylinders 4-6 developed crack immediately before catalytic converter. Problem has occurred in other Touaregs, there is even a recall for 2014 models. Crack allows exhaust to leak nearby air intake to cabin. Noticeable exhaust smell inside cabin, especially when stopped. No warning, just check engine light after the crack. Crack along thin weld, leading right into the catalytic converter. Also environmental concern that exhaust gasses are not being treated. Potential fire hazard.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-24
  • VIN: WVGRF7BPXHD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While using Adaptive Cruise Control, vehicle intermittently displays "ACC not available" cruise control completely disengages and does not allow for traditional cruise control functions. Typically ACC begins to function again after about 5 mins or by powering off and powering on vehicle. Vehicle has never been in an accident. All incidents occur in Southern California. Situation when it disengages can pose safety risk to due sudden loss of propulsion while keeping up with traffic, especially frightening when driving at an incline, i.e. Grapevine. Message is intermittent and can turn on 10 minutes into a drive or two hours into a drive. Unable to show dealer message. No advanced notice of ACC failing or issue with vehicle. Vehicle has had all maintenance done with dealer. No modifications to any component.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-05
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP6HD
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: Power seat reclining function on passenger and driver side. Due to the top of the adjustment lever being positioned too close to the top of the set cushion, if you sit on the edge of the seat, the seat back will continue to recline until you get up if you notice it or it hits the back seat bottom cushion. if there is a child in the back seat it could cause injury. My daughter almost had her legs crushed when my mom delayed exiting the vehicle with the passenger door open and sitting partially on the seat. She did not even notice the seat reclining until it hit my daughters knees.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-02
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP6HD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When coming to a stop with the AutoHold activated, sometimes it comes to an abrupt stop instead of a smooth stop. Also when you have Autohold engaged, when you come to a stop and put the car in park, disconnect the seatbelt the parking brake engages(expected), however when you turn the car off (after you've already removed your foot from the break pedal) it slightly releases and reengages the brake causing a slight movement of the vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-08
  • VIN: WVGEF7BP8HD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: While driving the power train was seriously impacted, it is no longer operational and available for inspection at the dealer now. This is absolutely a safety risk as there was power loss and inconsistency which could have been very dangerous depending on the level of control required by the traffic conditions. The dealer has diagnosed and insurance is scheduled to inspect. the manufacturer has been requested by us to do a root cause but no response from them - this is apparently a known issue (class action lawsuit) that has not been official recognized as a recall. a transmission warning came on prior to the failure.
2021-06-03

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-06-01
  • VIN: WVGGF7BP9HD
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: In a non-driving environment rain water drains off the hood of the vehicle, down the right headlight and drains directly into the vehicle's intake pipe. In turn, this rain water collects in the intake air filter box, destroys the air filter and allows water to enter the combustion chamber causing erratic engine performance and untold engine damage due to the violent shuddering and erratic idle. This is a safety issue when driving in rain because the condition can be exaggerated causing the engine to lose power at highway speeds. This is a known safety issue and has been addressed via recall in China and Europe.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-13
  • VIN: WVGRF7BPXHD
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WE NOTICED A SMALL PUDDLE UNDER THE FRONT RIGHT PORTION OF THE VEHICLE. WE ASSUMED IT WAS A CRACKED WASHER FLUID TANK. TOOK TO DEALER THEY FOUND NOTHING DURING SERVICE APPOINTMENT. TECHNICIAN MENTIONED NOTHING OF THE WATER IN THE FILTER AREA. OVER NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS THE SAME PUDDLE NOTICED WHICH WE ASSUMED IT WAS MERELY HVAC CONDENSATION DUE TO US LIVING IN HIGH HUMIDITY REGION. THIS VERY MORNING OF JULY 13 2020 MY WIFE STARTED THE VEHICLE AFTER SITTING FOR MORE THAN A WEEK AND I IMMEDIATELY HEARD THE ENGINE SURGING AND SUFFOCATING. HAD HER IMMEDIATE SHUT OFF. THE LOCATION OF THE NOISE RESINATED FROM THE ENGINE AIR FILTER BOX. AFTER I OPENED THE BOX MY FEET WERE SOAKED FROM THE SEEMING 2 QUARTS OF WATER THAT SPLASHED TO THE GROUND. I REMOVED THE COMPLETE WATER SOAKED AIR FILTER AND SCOOPED OUT THE REMAINING 3 CUPS OF WATER STILL LYING IN THE BOTTLE PART OF THE BOX. THE DRAIN VALVE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX FAILED TO DRAIN OFF WATER WHICH WATER SHOULDN'T BE IN THAT REGION ON ANY CAR. I SPOKE TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHO RESPONDED IN A SURPRISED MANNER AS IF THEY NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE... WELL AFTER INTERNET RESEARCH I FOUND THIS ISSUE IS A WORLD WIDE ISSUE WITH PENDING LAWSUITS ... NO REMEDY AVAIL ABLE RENDERING THE CAR UNDRIVEABLE UNTIL RESOLUTION IDENTIFIED. NO MOVEMENT ON THIS ISSUE FROM 2014-2017 MODELS AS INTERNET RESEARCH.

  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2017 VW TOUAREG SPORT. WATER IS ENTERING THE AIR FILTER COMPARTMENT. IF WATER ENTERS THE ENGINE IT WILL SHUT DOWN THE CAR POSSIBLY IN TRAFFIC CAUSING A VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION, IN ADDITION THE ENGINE WILL BE DESTROYED. THE VEHICLE IS LIKE NEW AND 100% FACTORY EQUIPPED. THIS IS A FLAW IN DESIGN. I BECAME AWARE OF THE SITUATION WHILE CHANGING THE AIR FILTER. AFTER RESEARCHING THE CLUBTOUAREG FORUM MANY PEOPLE ARE HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINT. THERE IS A CLASS ACTION SUIT OVER THE ISSUE. HTTPS://WWW.CLUBTOUAREG.COM/THREADS/2017-SPORT-W-TECH-ENGINE-INGESTED-WATER.263721/ I BELIEVE RECALL IS JUSTIFIED GIVEN THE HIGH PROBABILITY WATER ENTERING THE ENGINE, CAUSING A SHUT DOWN ON THE HIGHWAY AND DESTROYING THE ENGINE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-07-19
  • VIN: WVGRF7BP2HD
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: ENGINE AIR INTAKE DESIGN IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO FLOODING WITH WATER. A LARGE AMOUNT OF WATER WILL COLLECT IN THE INTAKE TUBE BEHIND THE FRONT GRILL. THE DRAIN INSTALLED IN THE INTAKE TUBE IS NOT SUFFICIENT ENOUGH FOR HIGH VOLUMES OF WATER IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, SUCH AS IN A THUNDERSTORM. THE DRAIN ALSO CLOGS EASILY WITH DIRT AND DEBRIS. THE WATER THEN MIGRATES INTO THE AIR FILTER BOX, WHERE IT CAN BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED BY SEVERAL PEOPLE WORLDWIDE. THIS OCCURS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS PARKED AND/OR DRIVING THROUGH HEAVY RAIN REGARDLESS OF LOCATION. Negative 2017 Volkswagen Touareg car reviews

  1. Edmund Russel 2024-11-25

Avoid any products made by the VW corporation. I leased a brand new car and after only 6k miles, it stalled and required a complete fuel pump replacement. Despite the dealer's poor service, they replaced the fuel pump, but the car stalled again on my way home. After contacting corporate, they were unhelpful and insisted that the dealer had fixed the issue. As a last resort, I had to file a lemon law suit with the state. After 8 months of frustration, the issue has finally been resolved.

  2. Harold Ortiz 2024-10-25

We bought our Touareg brand new in 2016 and have been taking it to the same dealership for all scheduled maintenance. Unfortunately, we've been experiencing some maintenance and quality issues lately, which is a shame because we've put a lot of miles on it - mostly on the freeway during long trips from KC to Phoenix, Clearwater FL, and Chicago. We're actually preparing to sell it now, but we were disappointed to find out that the resale value isn't what we expected. One issue we had early on was with the factory tires wearing out quickly, even though we mostly drove on the freeway. The real problems started at 60,000 miles, when we had to replace the water pump under the drivetrain warranty. Then, at 62,000 miles, both fuel level sending units went out, which we found out is a common issue across VW models. The interior fit is also starting to show some wear and tear, with the center console cover coming unglued and one of the A-pillar trim pieces not staying in place. The dealership told us that both would need to be replaced, but we're not willing to spend that kind of money on it. Despite these issues, the Touareg is still a comfortable and enjoyable car to drive. The touchscreen and navigation system are a bit outdated and limited in functionality, but overall it's a great car. We just wish we didn't have to deal with these quality issues.

  3. Buford Kemmer 2024-08-08

My 2015 Touareg has been to the dealership 6 times in 12 months of ownership for faulty parts and electrical problems. Despite the issues, I have been persistent in seeking resolution. I have contacted VW of America several times and opened a case with VW’s customer care team. While there is pending litigation, I remain confident that a solution will be reached. Although I have had a negative experience with VW Audi, I have had positive experiences with other car brands such as Lexus. In the future, I will consider purchasing from a brand that prioritizes customer satisfaction.I am confident that the issues with my Porsche Cayenne will be resolved. I am hopeful that the current TDI lawsuit will result in a buyback for this car. Paying over $60k for a brand new car that has starting issues is unacceptable. It is important for VW to treat their customers with respect and provide satisfactory solutions at both the dealership and corporate level.

  4. Zachariah Krajcik 2024-06-26

Despite being a great car with superb towing and off-road capabilities, I have unfortunately been disappointed with my 2017 Touragu over the past 18 months. While I love the comfortable seats, moonroof, and storage, the entertainment system is lacking and outdated, with no phone or text capabilities, an old navigation system, and no cameras, particularly the 360 camera that I really wanted. Despite having spent over $30,000 on repairs, including a new ACC, new tires, and a new water pump twice, I still don't trust it to not need further expensive repairs. Therefore, I have decided to sell it due to the missing 360 camera. However, I remain confident in its towing and off-road capabilities.

  5. Francisco Bogisich 2024-06-06

I've only had the car for a few days, and overall, I'm impressed. However, coming from my 2014 Ford Edge (which cost 42k) to this car (which cost 50k), I feel that VW could have put a little more thought into the tech package. I assumed this car would be state-of-the-art in terms of technology. While the car runs well, I find myself already using Google Maps to get places, and the voice recognition is not up to par. My 2014 Edge was light years ahead of VW in terms of tech.

Positive 2017 Volkswagen Touareg car reviews

  1. Marty Wintheiser 2024-11-26

I absolutely love my car and would definitely buy it again, despite some minor shortcomings such as the Nav and entertainment systems. The 3.0L diesel engine is impressively quick and surprisingly quiet, and the 8-speed transmission is the perfect match for it. Although the Nav system is not up to par (as is typical with VW Nav systems), I have found that using Waze instead works much better. The sound system, unfortunately, is also subpar and could be improved. However, the car handles great and the safety systems, such as the radar-based cruise control and lane change assist, are top-notch. In fact, I prefer this car over my previous MBZ ML350, with the exception of the NAV and Entertainment. Overall, I still love my Touareg, even after owning it since Dec 2017 and taking many lengthy trips. The only thing I wish for is better fuel mileage, as it seems to go through more Def-Blue additive than expected. To monitor engine wear, I highly recommend using an outside oil monitoring company to minimize crankcase oil dilution during the warranty period.

I'm delighted to share that this is my third Touareg purchase. After trading in my 2002 model for a 2011, I unfortunately totaled it and decided to buy a 2015. However, the color I wanted was not available, so I opted for a 2016 TDI just a month before the 'Dieselgate' scandal. I was thrilled when I drove off the lot in sport mode. With only 4500 miles on the clock, it's been a pleasure to not see many other cars like mine on the road. Although my friends and wife tease me about the possibility of having to sell it if my employer moves me to California, I'm happy to have purchased this Executive edition VW TDI before it was pulled off the market in the US. It's a shame that others who may have wanted a great diesel at a reasonable price missed out.

I love this car! It's fully loaded at $61k, which makes it a great deal compared to a Cayanne (assuming you don’t need the extra HP). However, my only criticism so far is the fuel economy rating. I'm not sure how they got to 17 mpg when the best I can do is ~14mpg in normal stop and go traffic. I don’t do a lot of highway miles, so I can't comment on that yet.

This is my second Touareg and I must say, it's the biggest bang for the buck German SUV in my opinion. I've also owned a Cayenne before and I can confidently say that the Touareg is simply amazing. I looked at the Macan and Alfa's new SUV before purchasing another Cayenne, but the Macan felt a little small and had too many technology components. I had a fully loaded Audi A6 before and I had issues with the tech. The Touareg, on the other hand, is simply amazing inside, much like the Alpha. However, the Alpha is too new to the US market and the Touareg is tried and true. The classic look and great drive make it a solid, secure, and high-performing SUV.

Beautiful car! I love everything about it, but I understand your desire for more power at acceleration.
