Dodge Dart problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Dart is a line of large passenger cars produced by Dodge from the 1959 to 1976 model years in North America, with production extended to later years in various other markets.

Chrysler first used 'Dart' name plates on two Italian styled show cars, in 1956 and 1957, before it became a Dodge model name.

The production Dodge Dart was introduced as a lower-priced full-size model in 1960 and 1961, but became a mid-size car for one model year for 1962, and was then reduced to a compact for two generations, from 1963 to 1976.

The Dart nameplate was resurrected for a Fiat-derived compact car that was introduced in 2012.

Common Dodge Dart problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Dodge Dart, several common problems have been reported:

  • Engine Problems:
    • The 2013 Dart has been reported to stall during hazardous situations, such as in the middle of an intersection. Engine stalling is a frequent issue, occurring at relatively low mileage of around 34,000 miles. Symptoms include loss of power, downshifting, engine failure, and stalling while turning. Fixes may involve updating the PCM software or replacing the engine entirely.
  • Brake System Concerns:
    • Owners of the 2013 Dart have complained about unusual noises coming from the brake system. Despite some not finding any issues upon inspection, complaints persisted, leading Chrysler to issue a recall for brake problems. Some Darts were equipped with incorrect rear brake calipers, causing braking issues.
  • Oil Consumption in 2.4L Tigershark Engine:
    • A serious defect in the 2.4L Tigershark engine leads to excessive oil consumption during normal operation. Owners often need to top off the oil frequently and may require consumption tests at the dealership to prevent engine seizing.
  • Stuck in Park:
    • Some Dodge Dart owners have reported issues with being unable to shift the car into reverse or drive, experiencing difficulties in moving the gear shifter. This problem has been noted in various Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep vehicles as well.

These issues highlight some of the significant concerns faced by Dodge Dart owners, ranging from transmission and engine malfunctions to brake system problems and oil consumption issues. Addressing these issues promptly and through professional inspection and repair can help ensure the safety and reliability of the Dodge Dart.

  • Summary: Vehicle VIN [XXX] transmissions shift cable bushing issue. It's broken now. Under a recall. Took vehicle to Bob Moore Dodge in OKC 09/07/2024. They acknowledge the VIN is under recall. The part is broken today. But the part is not available. Per Bob Moore Dodge the part is not available in OKC, or anywhere in the US and may never be available. The y suggested I try going to another Dodge Dealer in town - 20 miles away, David Stanley Dodge, but even then, they admit David Stanley Dodge does not have the part. And they admit the vehicle may not be safe to drive. Mopar site [XXX] clearly shows the parts are available. So I think there is an issue here. Bob Moore Dodge in OKC just does not want to mess with fixing this issue? Or is the Mopar site wrong? So it's a Dodge vehicle. Broken down now. Transmission shift cable no longer attached to the transmission. Recall on this exact issue. I'm told it's not going to be fixed today, tomorrow and perhaps never. Bob Moore Dodge in OKC contact is Aarron -844-710-0566. 7420 NW Expy in OKC. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: 1C3CDFBB2FD
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: After purchasing the car used, the car got stuck in reverse and would not start or shift into/out of gear or park. The dealership determined that it was "shifter cable bushing broken out of cable eyelet" which we saw was on a recall list for these vehicles. Upon further investigation, we discovered that the recall work HAD been done while with a previous owner. However it appears that even the recall work has failed. The necessary part to fix the issue is on back order and more than one shop has confirmed that they are unable to get the part to make the repair. I spoke with a representative from Chrysler and they said that since the VIN doesn't pull up a recall, they won't help us with this issue. The car, which was purchased 6 days prior to the incident, now sits at the dealership and if it ever gets fixed will cost over $700 for repairs. Since it seems to be a failure of recall work, I'm hoping an investigation can be opened and that we and other owners could get some help with this.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1C3CDFBA5DD
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car has an extremely bad rough idle. I’ve had an alignment done, new tires, new spark plugs. I’ve done so much work to this car. I have done some extremely deep research and it is a VERY common issue in the 2013 Dodge dart. One thing I also read, is it could be caused due to all of the ground point nuts being painted over, not creating a strong circuit for the ground. That should be a recall because I cannot physically replace all of those nuts. If that’s not the issue, there needs to be an investigation to figure out why this car feels like it will stall out, or I’m going to lose a tire going 65 on the interstate. Something isn’t right with this car and the dealership needs to diagnose it for free knowing it’s such a common issue! I have a very trusted, fully certified mechanic, he has looked at my car, and he is stumped too. No one can figure this out

  • Summary: Key fob gets stuck in the ignition. I have to set in the car for about 10 minutes before it will release. I did take to have looked at and the ignition switch and fob was replaced. I have attached copy of the receipt.
Dodge Dart 2014
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-12
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-12
  • VIN: 1C3CDFEB7ED
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I have a few problems to be addressed because this car have a real safety issue. One issue been happening was car sometimes doesn’t start. This problem maybe stalling starting may delay in cases of personally emergency’s. Second, I got a recall letter having emissions issues? During this recall letter I receive my inspection sticker was due, then I got a rejected sticker because it did failed emissions as noticed. I tried getting issue resolve at few of the dodge dealers nearby 3 places that’s the closest which were like almost an hour away, but there were a backlog of part not available? Since those two issues I had and having time to try getting these recalls and issue resolved, dealer said not much of an issue and couldn’t find much issues? Told the dealer I had recall and starter issues also with no check engine light on. The dealer did a diagnose on the car but couldn’t find actual problem but wanted to charge me on so much other things like spark plugs change before they can find the actual issue. I paid for the diagnose about 200+ out of pocket. Came to find out they diagnosed but now check engine light is ON now and I looked under hood myself found they didn’t reconnect the engine coil to spark plug, maybe check and forget to reconnect? I reconnected myself and then no check engine lights. I had to check myself why can’t I start and then check fuse box under hood, found relay was damaged, shorted out reason why car had issues starting. This is after I changed the battery which was problem wasn’t the reason couldn’t start. I did my research on this deeply cause now I have a much bigger issue, which I was losing my brake lines. I almost got into an accident but luckily still have E-brakes. I believe it’s the brake line front driver started leaking now. On top of brake issue, no brake lights came on still.I checked for any recalls or any updates and found there were the same or typical issues? I did checked my car Vin # and it said “0 unrepaired on my vehicle”?
Dodge Dart 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-06
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-11
  • VIN: 1C3CDFCH9DD
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The service Transmisson lite came on and then it was flashing gear not available and put in N, R, D. but was stuck in N while i was driving on the interstate at 70MPH, I almost got ran over trying to get off the road. The TCM was already replaced. I had replaced the SDU and still does the same thing. This happens often. The car will sit for a while and then it will do it again. It will also rev up like up press the gas pedal down but not touching it, this will happen while setting or after I put it in drive. The Bluetooth isn't working, it will work if the battery is unplugged but then after a day or 2 it stops. I have replaced the spark plugs and ignition coils and it still losses power occasionally. The back up camera doesn't work sometimes also the air condition and the air will come on but shows that it's off. This car is a piece of garbage, and dealers will just keep selling it even though they know it has a lot of issues that they can't seem to fix. Most of the people in the forums all having the same issues that never get fixed! This car needs a total RECALL.

Latest negative Dodge Dart car reviews

  1. Christian Heidenreich 2025-07-22

    Vehicle year: 2015

Hello, I am writing on behalf of my son who recently purchased a Dodge Dart. Unfortunately, he has experienced some issues with the car. The engine has shut off unexpectedly while driving, and despite taking it to two different Dodge dealerships, the issue has not been resolved. We have researched the problem online and have found that many other Dart owners have experienced similar issues. We are concerned for our safety and the safety of others on the road. We are hoping to find a solution to this problem and would appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you for your time.

  2. Nicholaus Kilback 2025-07-17

    Vehicle year: 2015

I would like to share my experience with the Dodge Dart. Unfortunately, we had some issues with it, including a transmission change at 16k miles, random shut-offs, and engine problems with the cooling system. The speakers also broke at 100 miles. However, we were fortunate to have a dealership that backed us and helped us out of this situation. I would recommend considering other options before purchasing a Dodge Dart. It's important to note that other negative reviews are also valid and should be taken into account.

  3. Sanford Haley 2025-07-01

    Vehicle year: 2015

I bought this car in May 2015 and have put 32,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have had to take it to the shop at least three times due to the engine shutting off while driving. Just last week, the car died again and I had to wait for it to start. I also had to replace the battery earlier this year. The car's gas mileage has decreased from 24mpg to 22mpg and it feels sluggish when accelerating. I've learned to be cautious when pulling out in front of oncoming traffic. I spoke with a mechanic (who happens to be my son's friend) and he thinks it might be a transmission issue. During my last oil change, I was told that my fuel injection needed to be cleaned. It's frustrating to constantly have car problems, especially since I've never owned a Dodge before. I'm disappointed that this American-made car isn't built to last. The air conditioning is loud and the person I'm speaking with on the phone can hear background noise from the car. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that the car will improve with proper maintenance.

  4. Theron Conroy 2025-06-22

    Vehicle year: 2013

I have the manual transmission, 2.0L. Unfortunately, there have been some issues with the clutch breaking and causing the car to be unable to move. The cost to fix it can be quite high, ranging from 1.8k to 2.5k dollars. While there was a class action lawsuit and a customer satisfaction program, it seems that these are no longer in effect. It's important to note that this issue can cause safety concerns, so it's definitely something to keep in mind. If you're considering this car, it's worth doing some research and weighing the pros and cons. Thank you for considering my experience with this car.

  5. Nico Dibbert 2025-06-22

    Vehicle year: 2015

Our Dodge Dart had some issues with the service engine light and transmission error codes when we purchased it with only 23 miles. However, we addressed these issues and are confident in the reliability of our vehicle in the long run. We stand by our decision to purchase a Dodge product.

Latest positive Dodge Dart car reviews

  1. Silas Kuhic 2025-07-22

    Vehicle year: 2014

I purchased my 2014 GT (pitch black with hyper black wheels, automatic transmission) brand new in April of 2014. After driving it for over a year and 17000 miles, I have very few minor complaints. Overall, it's a great car that gets me to work on time with good MPG. The outward visibility is good, but like most new cars, the A and C pillars are quite thick and hard to see around. Fortunately, my car has blind spot monitoring which has helped me more than once! The infotainment system works exceptionally well. All the menus are extremely easy to navigate and operate, but the touch sensitivity should be adjustable. More than once, I've found myself tapping the same button multiple times trying to get it to register. Navigation, radio controls, climate controls, they're all very user-friendly. There are two features that I found slightly annoying. The rain-sensing windshield wipers don't work very well. They tend not to be very intuitive, and I ended up disabling them. The other feature I dislike is the rear parking sensors. They work very well, but I disabled them because while backing out of my garage, they would go insane. Not a fun thing first thing in the morning. Interestingly, even after the sensors have been turned off, they still sometimes sporadically work. Sometimes while backing out of a steep driveway, the sensors will go off at random. Sometimes they'll sense something extremely far away, something it wouldn't sense if the sensors were turned on. And sometimes they do nothing at all. The other complaint I have is the ride quality. I didn't really know what I was getting myself into when I bought the GT. It rides like a rock in a washer, but that's what it's supposed to do. It corners really well and rides fairly quietly, but due to the terrible roads in my town, the car takes a bit of a beating, and I feel most of it too. As a result, the plastic panel above the rearview mirror rattles against the windshield and tends to drive me nuts.

  2. Morris Wunsch 2025-07-20

    Vehicle year: 2015

Congratulations on your new car! It sounds like you made a great choice with the manual transmission for a sportier feel. While the 2.0L could have a little more kick, the car drives great and has impressive fuel efficiency on the highway. The factory speakers are a nice touch and the adjustability of the seats is a plus. The cargo space is also awesome! It's good to note that you had a minor issue with the voice control, but it was quickly resolved by replacing the uconnect. Overall, this car is a great value for the money and has excellent safety features. The only downsides are a somewhat slow takeoff and slightly confusing instrumentation. Thank you for sharing your review and we hope you continue to enjoy your new car!

Great ride! Your fuel economy is awesome and the style is great too.

You have the 2.0 autostick Rallye edition. The styling is absolutely awesome, especially with the black and carbon grey wheels. It is definitely an eye-catcher. The interior is very nice, with red accents on the seats and doors. The 8.4 uconnect is amazing, and having a backup camera is a lifesaver for terrible parallel parkers like me! The gas mileage is pretty good, averaging at 22.5 mpg, even though I tend to speed everywhere I go. However, on a trip from Charleston, SC to Charlotte, NC, which is about 200 miles, I was able to average an impressive 43.5 mpg. Acceleration from a stop is a bit slow, but that is expected with the 2.0 engine. Overall, I absolutely love my Dart, and I'm sure you will too!

Before buying my Dodge Dart GT, I owned a Dodge Charger RT and a Dodge Challenger RT. I needed a car that could handle bad weather and get better gas mileage, and this car has exceeded my expectations. Although it took some time to get used to the power difference, the car has plenty of power for its class. I really enjoy driving it, as it has great response and braking, and is easy to maneuver. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it handles snow and ice. The car is fully loaded with all the technology I need, and I have had no problems with it at all. I am extremely happy with my purchase!
