Common 2011 Lexus Rx450h problems

The 2011 Lexus RX 450h is a hybrid luxury crossover SUV that has been praised for its low emissions and excellent fuel economy. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to certain common problems. One of the most frequently reported issues with the RX 450h is related to the battery. Some owners have reported that the battery goes flat after two to three weeks of not being used, which can be especially inconvenient in a hybrid car because the battery can’t be jump-started. Instead, it has to be trickle charged, or the circuits in the hybrid system will be damaged. This usually means calling out a breakdown service. Another common problem with the RX 450h is related to the suspension. The vehicle's heavy weight puts a lot of pressure on the suspension, particularly the shock absorbers. This can cause the vehicle to dip at one side, and the ride may not feel as smooth as it once did. Worn shock absorbers need to be replaced, and any loose parts should be tightened if there is a leak in the air suspension system. RX 450h models are also known to have unreliable anti-lock braking systems, with the actuator often being the culprit. The actuator needs to be replaced for the system to function correctly. While we don’t have data on the price of replacing this specific component, on average, ABS repairs cost £53.03 when booked through WhoCanFixMyCar. Non-engine electrics, such as the media system and windows, may also become faulty. Many 450h drivers have complained about problems like this, but Lexus has never issued a recall. The specific repair required will depend on which part of the electrical system has gone wrong. An auto electrician can identify your problem and advise you on the appropriate solution. In addition to these common problems, some owners have reported issues with the fuel pump. The fuel pump impeller may crack, causing the car to lose power and acceleration. This issue is more common in the second generation of the 450h, which was introduced in 2016. Despite these common problems, the Lexus RX 450h is known for its reliability. Lexus vehicles are among the most reliable you can buy, and the RX 450h is no exception. However, it is important to be aware of these common issues and to address them promptly if they arise.

What are the common faults on a Lexus RX450h?

The following problems are often reported by owners.

  • Broken fuel pump. The fuel pump impeller may crack, causing the low-pressure fuel pump located in the fuel tank to stop working. ...
  • Scuffed alloys and bodywork. This is less to do with the car itself and more to do with the driver.

What are the best years for used Lexus RX450h?

The Best Model Years to Buy a Lexus RX 450h

With the 2020, you would only pay, on average, 72% of the price as new, with 83% of the vehicle's useful life remaining. The 2021 and 2019 model years are also attractive years for the RX 450h, and provide a relatively good value.

Are Lexus RX450h reliable?

RX owners were generally satisfied with their cars according to our most recent What Car? Reliability Survey, which found it finishing second out of 24 cars in the large SUV class. This was backed up by the Lexus brand being the top-scoring manufacturer in our survey of 32 car manufacturers, with a score of 98.3%.

Is Lexus RX450h expensive to maintain?

Typically, hybrid vehicles like the RX450h can be a tad pricier to maintain than their non-hybrid counterparts due to their advanced technology. On average, you might be looking at around $550 to $700 annually for regular maintenance tasks.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-04
  • VIN: 2T2BK1BA2BC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2011 Lexus RX350 was running fine as I ran errands for groceries and other items around town one day. Then, out of the blue, I realized that after returning home and parking in my garage, there was a trail of oil in my driveway, leading to my vehicle. I looked under the engine area and noticed a pool of oil. I had a certified mobile mechanic come to my home and provide a diagnosis. This diagnosis was that a hole had formed in the rubber Engine Oil Cooler Line, and drained nearly all the oil in my engine. He mentioned that one more mile and I could have had total engine failure. He proceeded to replace it with a new Genuine Lexus, all metal Oil Cooler Line. I contacted Lexus about this incident, but they provided no compensation for this occurrence, even though there was a short 4-year technical service bulletin they issued barely a year after production, that called out this was indeed a flaw in their design. After doing some research, I see this is a VERY common issue, with many in the past most recent years having this very issue. Yet, Lexus has not recalled this, nor reimbursed those that have suffered from this manufacture defect. I am really hoping that something can be done by NHTSA and/or Lexus to resolve this issue that I am certain is still plaguing thousands of Lexus owners on the road, and putting our and those around us' safety at risk. Surely, a part that obviously and very consistently degrades over the course of 5+ years so often, needs to be addressed and recalled for the sake of safety and integrity.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-07
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2T2ZK1BA5BC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was driving my 2011 Lexus RX 350 on July 7, 2023, to a swimming pool. I was pulling into a parking spot just rolling to a stop with my foot on the brake. The car suddenly accelerated with grate speed and ran on the curb of the sidewalk forward to a small rock wall, I immediately turned the vehicle to the right and pressed down on the brakes, but the vehicle kept moving about 45 feet and came to a stop after crushing another two vehicles in the parking lot. These two vehicles were destroyed and not repairable according to the insurance company. For my car the right front side was crushed and both airbags on the drive side deployed, and my chest and legs were injured by the airbags. The biggest injury was my mental injury which made me unable to return to normal life.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-15
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JTJBC1BA3B2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: On Saturday July 15, 2023, at between about 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. CDST the vehicle was parked overnight in a garage, spontaneously caught fire and burned and was a total loss. There was a smell I would associate with an electrical fire. People reported hearing a car alarm and a "popping sound" before the fire. The fire department extinguished the fire and had the car towed out of the garage of a condominium association. Fire damage to property (except the subject car) was minimal but there was extensive smoke. In my opinion based on this incident, electric/hybrid cars should not be parked indoors.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-23
  • VIN: JTJBK1BA4B2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: Oil poured out under vehicle under right side passenger side from oil cooler line overnight in my garage. Lexus stated that I was lucky that this did not occur while driving as oil would have blown completely out due to the pressurized line and damaged the engine. There was no warning lights on. I backed the car out of the garage leaving a stream of oil and discovered the problem. I had the vehicle towed to the dealership as I never saw anything like this. According to Lexus service representative this is a known defect and has been upgraded by Lexus to a solid metal line at failure only but only for a specific amount of time. (Evidently the vehicle was manufactured with a part metal and part rubber coolant line that split on the rubber portion of the line.) Seems to me that this should have been a recall to prevent major damage to the vehicle and during driving hazard to consumer as the vehicle would stopped completely as oil would be blown out completely. My cost was estimated and paid for at $695.00. I think this should have been a recall.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-03
  • VIN: 2t2bk1ba1bc
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Oil cooler line ruptured while driving. Lexus issued an extended warranty to 12/31/2016 on the Oil Cooler Line. Lexus sent an advisory letter to owners of record several months prior to our purchase. Our dealer: Rohrich Lexus, did not inform us of the problem when purchased 09/2014. Nor did they address the problem when they serviced the vehicle in 08/16, an oil change. Now we have $500 plus in repair costs for the Oil Cooler Line replacement which could have been avoided if Rohrich Service Department had advised us of the Extended Warranty that covered our vehicle. THE OIL COOLER LINE WAS RUBBER AND THE FIX WAS A METAL LINE.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-04
  • VIN: 2T2BK1BA0BC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I have never had any issues with the oil and this car has had all of its oil changes on time and regular. Last evening I was driving home and the low oil pressure light came on. Within moments I started hearing a knocking Noise. I parked the car cause I was at home at that time and I checked the next morning and there is no oil in the car now. There's oil all underneath the undercarriage. I looked online and found a story of another guy this happened to and it ended up being an oil cooler pipe. I guess these are rubber and there's a recall warranty notice on these. My car has not been driven since I parked it. Please advise. Car is included in this warranty recall.

ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-18
  • VIN: jtjbk1ba8b2
  • Components: ENGINE,ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: Something had broken causing oil draining out of the car while driving on the highway. The car lost power and I pulled over immediately and shut off the engine. I opened the hood and saw nothing wrong, however when I checked the oil, there was no oil. I then proceeded to look under the car and there was oil all over the under carriage. I then did a walk around and found oil all over the back side. Me and my family were stranded while we waited for a tow truck. We had the tow truck take the RX350 to the local Lexus (Kuni in Denver) dealership where this car has been serviced all its life. When I received the initial call from the service department, He had said he is 99% sure this is the oil cooler pipe. He then said this is a known defect in the design of this part. When I googled "RX350 oil cooler pipe" numerous complaints came back. The initial design is rubber and now they installed one that is metal. This could have been fatal if we had traffic near us. Also this could have major damage to the engine. This should have been recalled however Lexus decided not to and just call it a warranty notice. Even with all the information out there about this highly defective part, the dealership would not cover the cost and told us to directly deal with Lexus. If anyone is reading this, and you have not change out this part, I would get this done! It is not an if this will happen, it is when it will happen. The design of this pipe is elementary and will fail. I thought Lexus being a luxury manufacturer would take more care with their customers! But as you can see, they are not.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-06
  • VIN: 2T2BK1BA0BC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: MY 2011 LEXUS RX 350 HAS A FRONT TIMING COVER LEAK. TO FIX THE FRONT TIMING COVER LEAK, THE DEALERSHIP HAS AN ESTIMATED PRICE OF $4,000.00. IN ORDER TO REPLACE A GASKET ON THE TIMING COVER, MANY ACCESSORIES AND PARTS NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. I THINK IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IF THE ENGINE IS LOSING OIL AND IT STOPS RUNNING. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT IT IS A POOR ENGINEERING DESIGN, OR A MANUFACTURER ERROR. IN ORDER TO REPLACE A SIMPLE GASKET, IT REQUIRES MONUMENTAL EFFORT AND EXPENSE. THERE ARE MANY OTHER GASKETS IN THE CAR ENGINE THAT ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND LASTS MUCH LONGER.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-07-28
  • VIN: JTJBC1BA3B2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: THE OIL COOLER PIPE BROKE ON MY 2011 LEXUS RX450H STARVING THE ENGINE OF OIL AS I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. THE PART IS CURRENTLY UNDER WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT BY LEXUS AND IS A KNOWN PROBLEM ON MY MODEL YEAR OF VEHICLE. THE MALFUNCTION IS PARTICULARLY INSIDIOUS AS OIL ONLY LEAKS WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING, HOWEVER WITH A HYBRID WHEN THE VEHICLE STOPS THE ENGINE STOPS AND SO DOES THE LEAK AT LEAST UNTIL YOU HAVE REACHED A HIGH ENOUGH SPEED FOR THE ENGINE TO KICK BACK ON AGAIN. IN MY SITUATION I RECEIVED NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, OIL LIGHTS OR ANY OTHER INDICATION OTHER THEN SUDDENLY IT FELT LIKE MY ENGINE WAS RUNNING A LITTLE ROUGH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER (I WAS JUST ON A CITY STREET) AND FOUND THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE WAS COVERED IN OIL. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL LEXUS DEALERSHIP WHO IDENTIFIED THE ISSUE AS THE OIL COOLER PIPE AND LEXUS CORPORATE PAID FOR THE REPAIR UNDER THEIR WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT. WHEN I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP FROM LEXUS OF ALBUQUERQUE I DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT TWO MILES AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP BEFORE I STARTED GETTING ALL KINDS OF LIGHTS FLASHING ON MY DASH AND THE ONLY POWER I HAD TO MOVE THE VEHICLE WAS THE ELECTRIC HYBRID DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO LEXUS WHICH INFORMED ME A FEW DAYS LATER THAT THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED. I OPENED A NEW CASE WITH LEXUS CORPORATE CONCERNING THE ENGINE ISSUES SINCE MY ENGINE FAILURE WAS A RESULT OF THE WARRANTIED PART FAILING. LEXUS'S ULTIMATE ANSWER WAS SORRY, BUT WE ARE UNWILLING TO HELP YOU AS WELL AS THE ANSWER FROM THE DEALERSHIP. IM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THE VEHICLE AND IT HAS ONLY EVER BEEN SERVICED AT LEXUS DEALERSHIPS, AND NOT ONCE DID A SERVICE ADVISOR/MANAGER INFORM ME THAT THIS PART WAS A POTENTIAL PROBLEM. FOR SUCH AN INTEGRAL PART THAT WAS POORLY MANUFACTURED AND CAN CAUSE SUCH EXPENSIVE AND CATASTROPHIC DAMAGE THE OIL COOLER PIPE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO LEXUS OF ALBUQUERQUE, 4821 PAN AMERICAN FWY, , ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87109, AND WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE OIL COOLER PIPE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AFTER THE REPAIR THE ENGINE SEIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BACK TO THE SAME DEALER BUT WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE REPAIR FEES. • Summary: AS WE WERE DRIVING, MY CAR SUDDENLY STARTED RUNNING ROUGH, ENGINE STARTED SPUTTERING, CAR THEN SLOWED DOWN, SEVERAL WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED ON THE DASHBOARD, AND THEN CAR ABRUPTLY STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. WE HAD TO PUSH THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD IN A SAFE PLACE UNTIL A TOW TRUCK ARRIVED TO TOW IT AWAY. I RESEARCHED AND LEARNED THRU SEVERAL MEDIA RELEASES THAT A SAFETY RECALL WAS RECENTLY ISSUED AND CURRENTLY IN AFFECT TO COVER THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE IN SEVERAL TOYOTA AND LEXUS MODELS. 1.8 MILLION CARS ARE AFFECTED UNDER THIS SAFETY RECALL. MY CAR EXPERIENCED THE IDENTICAL ISSUE AND UPON MECHANIC'S INSPECTION WAS CONFIRMED TO HAVE A FAILED/FAULTY FUEL PUMP THAT NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED. CAR IS UNUSABLE, REPAIR IS COSTLY AND SHOULD BE COVERED DUE TO NATURE OF DEFECT, UNDER THE RECALL. WE'VE COME TO TRUST THE TOYOTA AND LEXUS BRAND AS WE'VE ONLY OWNED TOYOTA AND LEXUS VEHICLES OVER SEVERAL YEARS. THIS SAFETY ISSUE IS DANGEROUS/UNACCEPTABLE AND HOPE WE'LL RECEIVE THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WE'VE COME TO EXPECT AND APPRECIATE AS LOYAL CUSTOMERS. THANK YOU. *TR

Negative 2011 Lexus Rx450h car reviews

  1. Graham Murphy 2024-09-14

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2010 RX 450h. I previously owned a 2002 GS 300 that served me greatly for 7 years, so I was excited to upgrade. Unfortunately, I did experience some issues with the RX, including it breaking down in the middle of a busy intersection after just 1 month and 2000 miles. Since then, I've had to take it to the shop for repairs for a total of 20 days out of the 50 days that I've owned it. While I've had some challenges with this car, I'm hopeful that things will improve. Based on my experience, I would recommend doing some research before purchasing this car. Thanks for listening!

  2. Emory Jerde 2024-07-25

The ride can be quite uncomfortable, especially if the road surface is not smooth. It is disappointing that the only front 12v outlet is located in a difficult-to-reach spot. It would have been more convenient to have a second outlet. The price of the 450h is quite high, but unfortunately, it does not live up to the luxurious standards of Lexus. This is our third and final Lexus unless the suspension system is improved. It is unfortunate to see the decline in the quality of Lexus SUVs, especially when compared to the comfortable and soft-riding RX series from 1999-2009. We have only driven 3000 miles in the past 6 months, as our Honda truck is much more comfortable. We will be looking for a different car next year.

  3. Damian Reynolds 2024-02-21

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback on our fuel economy. After driving 8500 miles, we've been averaging 25.5 mpg. As a suburban/rural Ohio mom with a family of 5 teens, we haven't been doing any special driving. It's quite a bit different from the 29 combined mpg we were represented with, so we're a bit disappointed. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2011 Lexus Rx450h car reviews

  1. Llewellyn Gibson 2025-01-06

Congratulations on your first Lexus! I'm glad to hear that you chose the hybrid version, as it's a smart choice for long-term car ownership. With gas prices expected to rise, you'll definitely save money in the long run. It's great to hear that you're enjoying the driving experience and getting good mileage. In fact, you're averaging an impressive 27.5 miles per gallon in mostly highway driving in the first 900 miles! Keep up the good work!

  2. Alexandro Windler 2025-01-06

I am so impressed with my 450h! The handling is excellent, it glides and flies down the road. The steering is tight and the car responds with little effort. I took a trip with my two adult children and a 14 year old, and while the middle seat is a bit tight, it handles full capacity comfortably for the most part. The tech features are fun and mainly intuitive, and the mouse is both fun and useful. The voice navigation has limits but reads well. I love the heated/cooled front seats and classy interior, as well as the interior lights. The only downside is the park assist, which overreacts and is annoying, and it tends to be a little underpowered at times, but nothing major. Overall, it's a total winner!

  3. Dayton Crooks 2024-10-27

Driving this car is a quiet and smooth experience. The exterior design is truly awesome, and the interior is spacious, luxurious, and comfortable. However, I did notice that the gas pedal is a bit sluggish. During my first tank of gas, I only got 24.6 mpg, even though I drove about 240 miles on the highway (60~70 mph) and about 160 miles in the city (25~45 mph). I was hoping for at least 29 mpg with this driving pattern. Hopefully, the next tank of gas will give me better performance.

  4. Carlo Hill 2024-10-03

This is my third Lexus and second hybrid, and I am very satisfied.

  5. Timothy Mitchell 2024-08-12

We recently traded in our 2009 Chevy Traverse after experiencing multiple issues, resulting in a total of 7 days of warranty work and only 7500 miles driven. Since switching to the Lexus, we have been pleasantly surprised with its performance, achieving twice the MPG of the Traverse with an average of 30.5 in the city and 28 on the highway. The ride is comfortable and the vehicle feels well-built. Although we were hesitant to purchase a Japanese vehicle, we are happy with our decision. We plan to write another review after 10 months of owning the Lexus.
