1992 Mercury Grand marquis problems
The Mercury Grand Marquis is an automobile that was produced by Mercury from the 1975 until 2011 model years. Introduced as the flagship sub-model of the Mercury Marquis in 1975, the Grand Marquis became a stand-alone model line in 1983, serving as the largest Mercury sedan. The model line served as the sedan counterpart of the Mercury Colony Park station wagon up to 1991. The fourth generation was the basis of the 2003 and 2004 Mercury Marauder.
From 1979 until 2011, the Grand Marquis shared the rear-wheel drive (RWD) Panther platform with the Ford LTD Crown Victoria (Ford Crown Victoria after 1992), and from 1980, the Lincoln Town Car. For over three decades, the Ford and Mercury sedans were functionally identical, with two of the three generations of the model line sharing the same roofline. The Grand Marquis was available as a four-door sedan for nearly its entire run; from 1988 to its final year in 2011, it was the only body style that was offered. A four-door hardtop was available from 1975 to 1978 and a two-door hardtop coupe from 1975 to 1987.
The Grand Marquis was the second-best-selling Mercury line (after the Cougar) with 2.7 million units produced; at 36 years of continuous production, the Grand Marquis was the longest-running Mercury nameplate (the Cougar, 34 years). Ford manufactured the Grand Marquis, alongside the Mercury Marquis, Mercury Marauder, Ford (LTD) Crown Victoria, and (beginning in 2007) the Lincoln Town Car, at two facilities: the St. Louis Assembly Plant in Hazelwood, Missouri (1979-1985) and the St. Thomas Assembly Plant in Southwold, Ontario, Canada (1986-2011).
Ford announced the discontinuation of the Mercury brand in 2010, but a few 2011 model-year Mercurys were made. The last Grand Marquis - and the final Mercury branded car - was produced on January 4, 2011, at St. Thomas Assembly.

Common 1992 Mercury Grand marquis problems
The Mercury Grand Marquis, a full-size sedan produced from 1983 to 2011, is known for its comfort, reliability, and solid construction. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. Based on owner complaints, the most prevalent issues with the 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis can be categorized as follows:
- Headlights Not Working Properly: This issue affects the 2005 Grand Marquis, with an average cost to fix of $500 and an average mileage of 83,000 miles. The headlights are crucial for nighttime driving and visibility, and malfunctioning headlights can pose a safety hazard.
- Valve Dropped Through Engine: This problem is reported in the 2007 Grand Marquis, with an average cost to fix of $3,300 and an average mileage of 76,000 miles. When a valve drops through the engine, it can cause significant damage to the engine, requiring expensive repairs.
- Transmission Failure: While not specifically mentioned for the 1992 Grand Marquis, transmission failure is a common problem across various model years, including the 2003 model, which has the most overall complaints. Transmission issues can lead to difficulty shifting, slipping, or even complete failure, requiring costly repairs or replacement.
- Spring in Seat Belt Buckle May Fail: This problem is not specific to a particular model year but is a common issue across the Grand Marquis lineup. The seat belt buckle's spring is responsible for securely holding the seat belt in place. When it fails, the seat belt may not function correctly, potentially compromising passenger safety.
- AC Climate Control Not Working Properly: This issue affects the 2004 Grand Marquis, with an average of six complaints. The air conditioning and climate control system are essential for maintaining a comfortable cabin temperature, and malfunctions can lead to reduced functionality or complete failure.
- Air Bag Light On: This problem affects the 2005 Grand Marquis, with an average of five complaints. The airbag system is a critical safety feature, and any malfunction can compromise passenger safety in the event of a collision.
These common problems with the Mercury Grand Marquis, particularly the 1992 model, are based on owner complaints and should be taken into consideration when purchasing or maintaining this vehicle.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2008-05-02
- VIN: 2MECM75W1NX
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: I HAVE PICTURES OF THE FUEL PUMP I TOOK OUT OF MY 1992 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS. THE CAR HAD COUGHED TO A STOP AND I SUSPECTED THE FUEL PUMP. THERE WAS NO PRESSURE IN THE FUEL RAIL SO I PULLED THE PUMP OUT OF THE TANK. I CHECKED THE PUMP WITH A BATTERY AND IT RAN FINE. THEN I STARTED LOOKING AT THE FUSES AND FOUND THE 20A PUMP FUSE BLOWN. OBVIOUSLY THERE WAS A SHORT SOMEWHERE. AS YOU CAN SEE BY PIC 2 THE SHORT OCCURRED WHEN THE "HOT" WIRE INSULATION WAS WORN THROUGH ON THE FLOAT BRACKET. IN ORDER TO BLOW A 20A FUSE THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A SPARK. FORTUNATELY, IT APPEARS THAT THE CONTACT POINT WAS UNDER THE LEVEL OF THE GASOLINE WHEN THE SHORT OCCURRED AND NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED. IF THE POINT HAD BEEN ABOVE THE GASOLINE IN THE VAPOR AREA THE RESULTS COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH DIFFERENT. PIC 3 IS HOW I ROUTED THE WIRE BEFORE REPLACING THE ASSEMBLY BACK IN THE TANK. BTW YOU CAN SEE THAT I DID USE A NEW FUEL PUMP. I STILL HAVE THE OLD ONE. I SENT A MESSAGE TO THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY THROUGH THEIR WEB SITE BUT HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING. AS OF NOW I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY 1997 GRAND MARQUIS SINCE THE DESIGN IS IDENTICAL. I GUESS MY NEXT STOP IS THE DOT OR BETTER YET YOUTUBE. I NEVER DID UNDERSTAND PUTTING AN ELECTRIC MOTOR IN THE FUEL TANK. JERRY HOLLAND *TR

RECENTLY,EXPERIENCED LOSS OF HEADLIGHTS ON 92 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS DURING TRIP OVER THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY. CONSEQUENCES COULD HAVE BEEN FATAL HAD THE LIGHTS NOT CAME BACK ON AFTER I TURNED THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON AGAIN. IN AN ATTEMPT TO REPLACE WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A FAULTY HEADLIGHT SWITCH, I DISCOVERED A WIRE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH SHOWS INDICATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURES DUE TO BURNING AND MELTING. SIMILAR TO RECALL ON THE FORD CONTOUR. (SEE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 99V103000 ). I PLAN TO CONTACT FORD AND SEE IF THEY WILL REPLACE FOR FREE AND OR GIVE ME THE PART NUMBER OF THE HARNESS CONNECTOR PART SO THAT I MAY BE ABLE TO REPLACE. I PLAN ON KEEPING BOTH THE FAULTY CONNECTOR AND THE ORIGINAL SWITCH IN THE HOPE THAT IT WILL BE OF BENEFIT TO UNDERSTAND THE FAILURE MECHANISMS OF THE EXTERIOR HEADLIGHTS. *TR

- Summary: MY 1992 GRAND MARQUIS WAS TAKEN IN FOR WHAT WAS A MINOR MISS IN THE ENGINE. THE MACHANIC SAID THE COMPUTER SHOWED A CODE 214. HE REPLACED THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR/SWITCH (FOR COMPUTER) PER THE CODE IN THE CAR'S COMPUTER. THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME AND I DROVE IT TO WORK, ABOUT FIVE MINUTES AWAY FROM THE REPAIR SHOP. ABOUT 4 HOURS LATER I GOT IN THE CAR TO DRIVE HOME AND IT STARTED MISSING REAL BAD, LIKE IT WAS NOT GETTING ENOUGH GAS AND ABOUT TO SHUT OFF. MY CAR HAS BEEN TO A FORD DEALRSHIP WHO WANTED $1,700 IN VEHICALE PREPARATION COST BEFORE DEALING WITH WHAT MAY BE THE PROBLEM. ANOTHER MACHANIC WHO USE TO WORK FOR A FORD DEALERSHIP CHECK THE CAR AND COULD NOT REMOVE THE COD 214. THE MACHANIC REPLACED THE CAM SENSOR, THE CRANK SENSOR, THE COOLANT SENSOR, THE AIR FLOW DUCT AND INSTALLED A NEW SET OF PLUG WIRES. IT IS NOW JULY AND I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE MY CAR SINCE MARCH 17TH. WHAT WAS A PERFECTLY GOOD CAR IN MARCH IS NOW A PEACE OF JUNK. OTHER THAN THIS PROBLEM THE CAR IS IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION. IT IS SUSPECT THAT THIS PROBLEM MAY BE ELECTICAL IN NATURE AND I BELIEVE THAT LINCOLN/MERCURY SHOULD AT LEAST ASSIST IN CORRECTING THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IT APPEARS TO BE BASED ON A LIMITING FACTOR OF THE MANUFACTURING OF THE VEHICLE'S COMPONENTS. *AK

- Summary: THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWS A MUCH LESS SPEED THAN ACTUAL SPEED TRAVELING. CONTACTED A COUPLE OF FORD DEALERSHIP WHO INFORMED ME THAT THEY DO NOT AND CANNOT FIX THIS PROBLEM AND I WAS REFERRED TO A LOCAL SPEED TEST SHOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TESTED ON A CERTIFIED MACHINE, THE TEST RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS (SPEEDOMETER INDICATION/ACTUAL VEHICLE SPEED): 25/30 30/37 35/43 40/50 45/54 50/60 55/66 60/72 65/80 ALSO, THE ODOMETER REGISTERS 95 MILES FOR EVERY 100 MILES TRAVELED. THE VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 103,000 MILES ON IT, AND THE MALFUNCTION HAS CAUSED FINANCIAL PROBLEMS (SPEED VIOLATION) AS WELL AS ENDANGERING SELF AND OTHERS WITHOUT EVEN BEING AWARE OF THE FACT THAT THE CAR IS TRAVELING AT DANGEROUS SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY ON 65 MPH AND 70 MPH EXPRESSWAYS. THE TEST SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THE SPEED DIFFERENTIAL INCREASES AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND COULD RESULT IN SPEEDS WAY OVER 30 MPH ABOVE THE SPEEDOMETER INDICATION.*JB
