1994 Chrysler Lebaron problems
The Chrysler LeBaron, also known as the Imperial LeBaron, is a line of automobiles built by Chrysler from 1931 to 1941 and from 1955 to 1995. The model was introduced in 1931, with a body manufactured by LeBaron, and competed with other luxury cars of the era such as Lincoln and Packard. After purchasing LeBaron with its parent Briggs Manufacturing Company, Chrysler introduced the luxury make Imperial in 1955, and sold automobiles under the name Imperial LeBaron until 1975. Chrysler discontinued the Imperial brand in 1975, and reintroduced the Chrysler LeBaron in 1977 to what was then Chrysler's lowest priced model.
The "LeBaron" name has since been applied to five different cars built by the Chrysler Division:
- 1977–1981 M-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan, coupe, and wagon
- 1982–1988 K-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan, coupe, convertible, and wagon
- 1985–1989 H-body (mid-size) LeBaron GTS hatchback
- 1987–1995 J-body (personal luxury) LeBaron coupe and convertible
- 1990–1994 AA-body (mid-size) LeBaron sedan
The last Chrysler LeBaron was produced in 1995, to be replaced with the Cirrus and Sebring. The LeBaron was one of Chrysler's longest running brands.

This car has been a blast! I only bought it because the price was really cheap due to needing transmission repair. I still have less than 3 grand in it and I've put 60,000 miles on it in less than a year. It was garage kept by a retired lady who took really good care of it, so my original top looks brand new and doesn't leak. Overall, this has been a wonderful, fun, and extremely economical ride. I have no complaints!
-
I'm so glad I own this car! It's been perfect for my needs and I haven't had any major problems with it in the 20 months I've owned it.
-
It sounds like you've had a pretty good car! You only had to fix one thing on it, which was the water pump and timing belt, but other than that it runs great.

I purchased this car back in 2004 from a retired farm couple who needed a two-door car after the wife broke her hip and wanted wider doors. At the time of purchase, it had 62,000 miles on it and I paid $2500. I used it for work year-round, driving an average of 20,000 miles annually. It was the perfect size, very comfortable, powerful, and quite economical. I made sure to keep up with regular maintenance, including oil changes every 3000 miles, brakes and serpentine belts as needed, and timing belt changes at 90,000, 180,000, 185,000, and 260,000 miles. I also had the front axles and bearings replaced at 200,000 miles after a slight rumble started on the right side during turns. Around 200,000 miles, I noticed slight blue smoke at start-up, but there was no unusual oil consumption. Worn valve seals are a known problem for the Mitsubishi 3.0 V6 with higher mileage. I only had to have it towed once following a water pump bearing failure, which leaked coolant onto the timing belt, shredding it at highway speed. Fortunately, the 3.0 is a non-interference engine, so the valves were not damaged. Sadly, in the dead of winter of 2016, at 288,000 miles, the car became increasingly hard to start when cold and began losing coolant with no visible external leak or coolant in the oil. A head gasket leak at #1 cylinder, right against the firewall, was the culprit. It was a major job. As I no longer needed the car for work, I decided to sell it. The body looked as good as the day I bought it, and the interior showed very little wear. The heat and air were excellent, and the ride remained smooth. Right up to the end, the transmission shifted smoothly and quickly, with no slipping. Also, it pulled a trailer as though it wasn't even there! I still miss this car and would buy another one without hesitation. It was worth every penny. The young man who bought it had the repair done, and four years later, I still see it on the road from time to time.

I received my LeBaron Convertible as a Father's Day present in 1998. Since then, it has been a reliable companion on the road. Other than routine oil changes, 2 sets of spark plugs, and a distributor cap, the only repair I had to make was for a fuel pump. On our last 2 touring vacations, one through the Rocky Mountains and one through Eastern Canada, my kids insisted that we take the LeB instead of our full-size conversion van!

I've owned this vehicle for about 4 years now and it hasn't failed me yet. Its fuel economy is good and it's comfortable to ride. Although its looks aren't the best, I'm not disappointed in buying this car.

It's great to hear that you took such good care of your car! However, it's unfortunate that you're experiencing some major problems with it now. It's understandable to feel frustrated, especially since you've done all the scheduled maintenance. It's important to note that every car is different and can have its own unique issues. Have you considered taking it to a trusted mechanic to see if they can diagnose the problem? It's always worth exploring all options before making a decision. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Hey there! I noticed that, like many other Chrysler LeBarons, I had to have the transmission rebuilt at 100,000 miles. But other than that, it runs pretty well! I really love the look of this car, and it gets around 22 mpg. If I can get the brake noise sorted out (I've had it checked a few times), I might keep it a little longer. It's not worth much in the used car market, but I still enjoy driving it!
Gerardo Steuber 2024-06-18
Chrysler's transmission problems and poor reliability are unacceptable. We cannot recommend purchasing from them again.
Ryder Schoen 2024-04-23
We bought this car used with 85,000 miles on it. Since then, we've put 39,000 miles on it and it's still running great! Everything still works perfectly and the interior and body are in excellent shape. I've always been a fan of Chrysler products and this car has only reinforced my satisfaction with them.
