1993 Chrysler Imperial problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was Chrysler's top-of-the-line vehicle for much of its history. Models were produced with the Chrysler name until 1954, after which it became a standalone brand; and again from 1990 to 1993. The company positioned the cars as a prestige marque to rival Cadillac, Continental, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, and Packard. According to Antique Automobile, "The adjective 'imperial' according to Webster's Dictionary means sovereign, supreme, superior or of unusual size or excellence. The word imperial thus justly befits Chrysler's highest priced model."

For several decades and multiple generations, the Imperial was the exclusive Chrysler and the favorite choice of luxurious transportation for senior executive leadership, government officials, royalty and various celebrities in comparison to the more affordable Chrysler New Yorker. Over the years the appearance, technological advancements and luxurious accommodations updated with the latest trends and fashionable appearances. Limousines, town cars and convertibles were the usual appearances, while special coachwork choices were provided by the industry's best providers, to include Derham, Fleetwood, LeBaron, and others.

The Chrysler Imperial rose was cultivated in 1952 and used to promote the brand.

Common 1993 Chrysler Imperial problems

The Chrysler Imperial, produced from 1990 to 1993, was known for its luxurious features and premium offerings. However, several common problems were reported by owners of this vehicle, which are detailed below.

  • Fuel Injectors: One of the most commonly reported issues with the 1993 Chrysler Imperial was the constant failure of fuel injectors. This problem was attributed to the more fuel-efficient V6 engines that replaced the thundering V8s of earlier models. The Imperial was equipped with a larger 3.3L V6 that made 150 b.h.p. and came with far more torque than the earlier models, but the frequent failure of fuel injectors was a significant concern for owners.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues were another common problem reported by Imperial owners. The vehicle was equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission, which was prone to problems and required frequent repairs.
  • Electronic Gauges: Part of the electronic gauges in the Imperial would often go haywire, causing issues for drivers who relied on accurate readings for various vehicle functions.
  • Performance: The Imperial's performance was criticized for being underpowered, despite its larger V6 engine. The vehicle's powertrain was good for a city/highway mpg rating of 18/26, but it lacked both the cachet and the performance of its competitors, such as the Lincoln Town Car or Continental.
  • Handling: The Imperial's handling was also criticized for being less than ideal. The vehicle suffered from body roll and light steering, which made it handle like a de Ville or Town Car without offering the interior size, suspension travel, and smooth V8 performance of either or the towing ability of the Lincoln.
  • Optional Equipment: While the Imperial offered some very upscale options, such as air suspension, digital instrument cluster, Infinity sound system, and keyless entry with alarm, these features were not standard and often required additional costs.
  • Size and Narrowness: Despite being a domestic luxury car, the Imperial was smaller than its competitors and remained 4.5 inches narrower than the de Ville, which might have been an issue for those transporting more than four passengers.

In summary, the 1993 Chrysler Imperial was known for its luxurious features and premium offerings, but several common problems were reported by owners, including fuel injector failures, transmission issues, electronic gauge problems, underpowered performance, handling concerns, optional equipment costs, size, and narrowness.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-06-07
  • VIN: 1C3XV56L7PD
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: CHRYSLER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR FAILING TO ISSUE BETTER AND PERMANENT RECALLS FOR THIS CAR. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS! I WAS DRIVING MY CHRYSLER AND TRIED TO STOP FOR SOME KIDS CROSSING THE STREET BUT THE BRAKES SUDDENLY GAVE OUT AND BECAME VIRTUALLY INOPERABLE AND I HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID KILLING THESE KIDS! I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD JUST TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN, LET ALONE COMPLETELY STOP. I LATER LEARNED AND WAS ABLE TO FIND SOME RECALLS THAT THIS MODEL USES ELECTRIC POWER BRAKES AND THE PUMP AND MASTER CYLINDER BECOME FAULTY. APPARENTLY, THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY HAS A SEAL THAT LEAKS PRESSURE AND CAUSES THE ELECTRIC BRAKE FLUID PUMP TO RUN MORE THAN IT WAS DESIGNED AND IT EVENTUALLY WEARS OUT AND JUST STOPS WORKING AND POWER BRAKES ARE LOST. THE RESULT IS LIKE TRYING TO STOP A FREIGHT TRAIN. CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT HAVE VIRTUALLY SWEPT THIS PROBLEM UNDER THE RUG! I HAVE RECALLS FROM CHRYSLER THAT STATE THE VEHICLE IS TO BE WARRANTIED FOR LIFE, REGARDLESS OF OWNERSHIP, BUT THE DEALERSHIP JUST GAVE ME THE RUNAROUND. I COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED THOSE KIDS! THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE AROUND THEM. *TR

Negative 1993 Chrysler Imperial car reviews

  1. Alfonso Schowalter 2024-07-20

Hi there! It's great to hear from someone else living in a small town. I'm glad to hear that your car has been working well for you these past few years. It sounds like it handles the road really well and is reliable in the winter. Plus, it's awesome that you've been taking such good care of it by keeping it in the garage and changing the oil often. The fact that the tires are in great condition and the transmission was replaced just 3 years ago is a testament to your excellent maintenance. Thanks for sharing!

Positive 1993 Chrysler Imperial car reviews

  1. Watson Fahey 2024-07-29

With the exception of a leaky valve in the air conditioning piping, I have experienced no trouble with my Imperial. The 3.8 V6 accelerates more than adequately for its size, coupled with near seamless shifts from the transaxle. The ride quality is excellent and the appearance of the car is classy yet unobtrusive.

  2. Nelson Quitzon 2024-07-11

This is a unique ride. It looks and behaves differently than other cars in its class. I have driven Lincolns and Cadillacs, but the Imperial has a completely different 'feel'. It all starts with its distinctive appearance, but it goes beyond that. It is a great classic car and probably the best value for the money in its category.

  3. Vaughn Hickle 2024-05-21

Bought this vehicle 5 years ago and have driven it for 110,000 miles. I had to replace the transmission once and remove the air suspension, but overall, I have enjoyed the car very much. I hope to continue driving it for a few more years. Best regards, Wayne

  4. Declan Ernser 2024-05-01

I have had an amazing experience with my Imperial! I was looking for a car that was not only good-looking, but also dependable, economical, and unique, and the Imperial has exceeded my expectations. I constantly receive compliments on its unique front end, tailights, and formal roofline, and people are always surprised to learn that it's already 15 years old. The interior is absolutely sumptuous, with supple Mark Cross leather seats and a premium sound system that make every ride a luxurious experience. The car handles like a dream, without feeling too floaty like a boat. You'll feel surrounded by genuine luxury and security, and enjoy a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Although the engine may work a bit hard, the fuel economy is excellent.

  5. Roderick Runolfsdottir 2024-04-22

This car was donated due to cancer from a junkyard, so I knew I was taking a chance. I've owned it for 2 years now and it has gone from 111,000 to 135,000 miles. I've only had to make normal repairs such as brakes, water pump, and windshield wiper motor replacement, which is expected for a car this old with this many miles. The only negative mechanical comment I have is about the rear automatic leveling system, which doesn't last. This is the second Chrysler I've had with the same problem, and I know someone else with the same car and same problem. The solution is to replace the rear springs and put in air shocks. A friend of mine did this and said it solved the problem, with no difference in ride. Otherwise, this car is very dependable! It even started every day this past winter in -10 degree weather for 10 days in a row with no hesitation!
