1991 Chrysler Imperial problems
The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was Chrysler's top-of-the-line vehicle for much of its history. Models were produced with the Chrysler name until 1954, after which it became a standalone brand; and again from 1990 to 1993. The company positioned the cars as a prestige marque to rival Cadillac, Continental, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, and Packard. According to Antique Automobile, "The adjective 'imperial' according to Webster's Dictionary means sovereign, supreme, superior or of unusual size or excellence. The word imperial thus justly befits Chrysler's highest priced model."
For several decades and multiple generations, the Imperial was the exclusive Chrysler and the favorite choice of luxurious transportation for senior executive leadership, government officials, royalty and various celebrities in comparison to the more affordable Chrysler New Yorker. Over the years the appearance, technological advancements and luxurious accommodations updated with the latest trends and fashionable appearances. Limousines, town cars and convertibles were the usual appearances, while special coachwork choices were provided by the industry's best providers, to include Derham, Fleetwood, LeBaron, and others.
The Chrysler Imperial rose was cultivated in 1952 and used to promote the brand.

Common 1991 Chrysler Imperial problems
The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1990, was a luxury sedan that faced significant reliability issues due to insufficient research and development. This article will discuss common problems with the 1991 Chrysler Imperial, focusing on complaints from owners.
ABS System Failure
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) in the 1991 Chrysler Imperial has been a source of frustration for many owners. ABS units can fail, leading to a loss of braking assistance and potentially dangerous driving conditions. In some cases, the ABS warning light illuminates, indicating a problem with the system. Replacing the ABS unit can be expensive, and the lack of available parts can make the repair process difficult.
Electrical Issues
The 1991 Chrysler Imperial has been plagued by electrical problems, with many owners reporting issues related to the body control module and melted wiring. These problems can lead to malfunctions in various electrical systems, including power windows, power locks, and climate control. The electrical issues can be difficult to diagnose and repair, often requiring extensive troubleshooting and replacement of faulty components.
Transmission Problems
The UltraDrive transmission, introduced in the 1990s, was designed to be a modern and advanced automatic transmission for front-drive vehicles. However, it has been criticized for its electronic operation, which can lead to various issues, including poor shift quality, delayed engagement, and slipping. The UltraDrive transmission's complexity and reliance on electronic controls can make repairs challenging and expensive.
Lack of Confidence in American Manufacturers
Some owners of the 1991 Chrysler Imperial have expressed a loss of confidence in American manufacturers due to the lack of available parts, knowledgeable mechanics, and poor design. This sentiment is shared by owners of other American vehicles, who have experienced similar issues with their cars.
In conclusion, the 1991 Chrysler Imperial has faced numerous problems, primarily related to the ABS system, electrical issues, and transmission problems. These issues have led to a loss of confidence in American manufacturers and can make repairs challenging and expensive.

I purchased my Imperial over a decade ago and it has been a great investment. This sporty and comfortable car has plenty of power and provides excellent fuel economy. I have even achieved up to 29 mpg at 55 mph on the interstate! Although I have had some electrical issues, such as a short in the dimmer multi-function switch and a dead battery due to a short in the headlight switch, I have been able to resolve them with the help of a local repair shop. Despite the challenges, I have been able to keep my Imperial running smoothly with normal maintenance and by replacing certain parts as needed. I am currently waiting for the weather to warm up so I can replace the wiring and connector to the PCM, but I am confident that I will be able to find the necessary parts. Overall, I have had a positive experience with my Chrysler Imperial and appreciate its reliability and durability. If you're considering purchasing a Chrysler Imperial, I highly recommend having a trusted mechanic or dealer check out the electrical components. However, the engine and transmission are strong and I have not had any issues with them. While the body may be fair to rough, this car has never gotten stuck in the snow and runs with a strong motor and excellent fuel economy. With over 200,000 miles, I recently replaced the water pump and a rotten hose, as well as installed a new old stock overflow tank, radio amplifier, and two speakers in December. Overall, this has been the best car I have owned and I have had several.
-
Bought this vehicle 5 years ago and have driven it for 110,000 miles. I had to replace the transmission once and remove the air suspension, but overall, I have enjoyed the car very much. I hope to continue driving it for a few more years. Best regards, Wayne
-
You had a very reliable car that performed well, even after 13-14 years. It was a smooth ride and the interior was in unbelievable condition. Although it was a little slow out of the box and the transmission was a bit rough, you easily passed much newer cars on the interstate. The car was white with burgundy interior and had no rust. Overall, it sounds like you had a great experience with this car!
-
I have had an amazing experience with my Imperial! I was looking for a car that was not only good-looking, but also dependable, economical, and unique, and the Imperial has exceeded my expectations. I constantly receive compliments on its unique front end, tailights, and formal roofline, and people are always surprised to learn that it's already 15 years old. The interior is absolutely sumptuous, with supple Mark Cross leather seats and a premium sound system that make every ride a luxurious experience. The car handles like a dream, without feeling too floaty like a boat. You'll feel surrounded by genuine luxury and security, and enjoy a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Although the engine may work a bit hard, the fuel economy is excellent.
-
This is a unique ride. It looks and behaves differently than other cars in its class. I have driven Lincolns and Cadillacs, but the Imperial has a completely different 'feel'. It all starts with its distinctive appearance, but it goes beyond that. It is a great classic car and probably the best value for the money in its category.

Hi there! It's great to hear from someone else living in a small town. I'm glad to hear that your car has been working well for you these past few years. It sounds like it handles the road really well and is reliable in the winter. Plus, it's awesome that you've been taking such good care of it by keeping it in the garage and changing the oil often. The fact that the tires are in great condition and the transmission was replaced just 3 years ago is a testament to your excellent maintenance. Thanks for sharing!
