Chrysler Imperial problems
The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was Chrysler's top-of-the-line vehicle for much of its history. Models were produced with the Chrysler name until 1954, after which it became a standalone brand; and again from 1990 to 1993. The company positioned the cars as a prestige marque to rival Cadillac, Continental, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, and Packard. According to Antique Automobile, "The adjective 'imperial' according to Webster's Dictionary means sovereign, supreme, superior or of unusual size or excellence. The word imperial thus justly befits Chrysler's highest priced model."
For several decades and multiple generations, the Imperial was the exclusive Chrysler and the favorite choice of luxurious transportation for senior executive leadership, government officials, royalty and various celebrities in comparison to the more affordable Chrysler New Yorker. Over the years the appearance, technological advancements and luxurious accommodations updated with the latest trends and fashionable appearances. Limousines, town cars and convertibles were the usual appearances, while special coachwork choices were provided by the industry's best providers, to include Derham, Fleetwood, LeBaron, and others.
The Chrysler Imperial rose was cultivated in 1952 and used to promote the brand.

Common Chrysler Imperial problems
The Chrysler Imperial, introduced in 1926, was Chrysler's top-of-the-line vehicle for much of its history. It was positioned as a prestige marque to rival Cadillac, Continental, Lincoln, Duesenberg, Pierce Arrow, Cord, and Packard. However, the Imperial faced reliability problems due to insufficient research during its production. Here are some common problems with the Chrysler Imperial based on complaints from owners:
- Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are common in the Imperial, with owners reporting issues such as a faulty body control module and melted wiring. The 1991 Imperial, in particular, had three complaints related to electrical issues.
- Carburetor Problems: Older models of the Imperial, particularly those with Holley 4160 Carburetors, may experience leakage problems from the fuel reservoirs in the end caps of the carburetor. This issue can cause the car to run poorly or stall, and it may require replacing the carburetor with an AFB or AVS model.
- Starting Difficulties: Some owners have reported difficulty starting their Imperial, particularly when cold. This issue can be caused by a variety of factors, including fuel filter problems or issues with the carburetor. In some cases, tapping the carburetor with a rubber mallet and lightly tightening the end cap screws may help, but if the problem persists, it may require more extensive repairs.
- Fuel System Issues: The Imperial's fuel system may also cause problems, with some owners reporting issues such as gas leaks from the carburetor. This issue can be caused by over-tightening the carburetor's end caps, which can warp the metal parts and make the carburetor difficult to repair permanently.
- Interior Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the interior of their Imperial, such as worn-out upholstery or malfunctioning climate control systems. These issues may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
- Suspension and Steering Issues: The Imperial's suspension and steering systems may also cause problems, with some owners reporting issues such as worn-out bushings or loose steering components. These issues can affect the car's handling and ride quality, and they may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
- Braking System Issues: The Imperial's braking system may also cause problems, with some owners reporting issues such as worn-out brake pads or leaking brake lines. These issues can affect the car's stopping power and safety, and they may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
- Transmission Issues: The Imperial's transmission may also cause problems, with some owners reporting issues such as slipping or shifting poorly. These issues may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
- Engine Issues: The Imperial's engine may also cause problems, with some owners reporting issues such as overheating or poor performance. These issues may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
- Exterior Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the exterior of their Imperial, such as rust or paint damage. These issues may require replacement parts or repairs to fix.
In summary, the Chrysler Imperial has faced a variety of common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include electrical problems, carburetor issues, starting difficulties, fuel system problems, interior problems, suspension and steering issues, braking system issues, transmission issues, engine issues, and exterior problems. While some of these issues may be relatively minor and easy to fix, others may require more extensive repairs or replacement parts.
Are Chrysler Imperials rare?
1949 Imperials are very rare as production records show only 50 Imperial sedans and 85 Imperial Crown limousines were built. The retail price for the 1949 Imperial was US$4,664 ($59,725 in 2023 dollars) and US$5,334 ($62,613 in 2023 dollars) for the Imperial Crown limousine.
How much horsepower did the Imperial have in 1968?
Model overview
Rear fenders were integrated into the bumpers, and the full-width taillights featured an Imperial eagle in the center. The engine was a 350-hp 440-cid V-8. Sales rebounded from 13,742 in 1966 to 17,614 in 1967.
How many 1965 imperials were made?
Production tailed downward, with only about 18,000 1965 Imperials built and fewer than 14,000 of the lovely 1966 Imperials. Convertibles were extremely low volume cars, the figures being 922, 633, and 514 for 1964 through 1966, respectively. See the specifications for the 1964, 1965, and 1966 Imperial on the next page.

- Summary: CHRYSLER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR FAILING TO ISSUE BETTER AND PERMANENT RECALLS FOR THIS CAR. THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS! I WAS DRIVING MY CHRYSLER AND TRIED TO STOP FOR SOME KIDS CROSSING THE STREET BUT THE BRAKES SUDDENLY GAVE OUT AND BECAME VIRTUALLY INOPERABLE AND I HAD TO SWERVE TO AVOID KILLING THESE KIDS! I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD JUST TO GET THE VEHICLE TO SLOW DOWN, LET ALONE COMPLETELY STOP. I LATER LEARNED AND WAS ABLE TO FIND SOME RECALLS THAT THIS MODEL USES ELECTRIC POWER BRAKES AND THE PUMP AND MASTER CYLINDER BECOME FAULTY. APPARENTLY, THE MASTER CYLINDER AND ACCUMULATOR ASSEMBLY HAS A SEAL THAT LEAKS PRESSURE AND CAUSES THE ELECTRIC BRAKE FLUID PUMP TO RUN MORE THAN IT WAS DESIGNED AND IT EVENTUALLY WEARS OUT AND JUST STOPS WORKING AND POWER BRAKES ARE LOST. THE RESULT IS LIKE TRYING TO STOP A FREIGHT TRAIN. CHRYSLER KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BUT HAVE VIRTUALLY SWEPT THIS PROBLEM UNDER THE RUG! I HAVE RECALLS FROM CHRYSLER THAT STATE THE VEHICLE IS TO BE WARRANTIED FOR LIFE, REGARDLESS OF OWNERSHIP, BUT THE DEALERSHIP JUST GAVE ME THE RUNAROUND. I COULD HAVE EASILY KILLED THOSE KIDS! THANK GOD I WAS ABLE TO SWERVE AROUND THEM. *TR

UPON RESEARCH, IT WAS DISCOVERED THERE WAS WRITTEN DOCUMENTATION THAT CHRYSLER ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE ABS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE ABS PUMP MODULE WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 271.25. THE NEW ABS MODULE STARTED MALFUNCTIONING IN JUNE OF 2012, STARTING WITH SMALL CHIRPING NOISES THEN GROWING LOUDER INTO SQUEALS AND GRINDING FROM THE ABS PUMP MOTOR ITSELF. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER, WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THE PUMP HAD FAILED AND A NEW ONE WAS INSTALLED. THE CONSUMER CALLED CHRYSLER TO INFORM THEM, THE PUMP THAT WAS INSTALLED IN 2010 HAD FAILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP FOR WARRANTY REPAIR. WHEN THE CONSUMER'S SON PICKED UP THE VEHICLE AND LEFT THE PARKING LOT, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE LOST 90% OF ITS ABILITY TO STOP. THE MECHANIC STATED THERE WAS A SHORT IN THE ABS PUMP MOTOR WHICH CAUSED THE BRAKES TO FAIL. AFTER CONTACTING CHRYSLER AGAIN, THEY AUTHORIZED ANOTHER ABS PUMP TO BE INSTALLED. AFTER THE INSTALLATION, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT STARTED ILLUMINATING OFF AND ON INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONSUMER MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO HAVE THE DEALER RESOLVED THE ISSUE BY HAVING THEM KEEP THE VEHICLE FOR WEEKS AT A TIME, AND WE THE VEHICLE WAS PICKED UP, THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WAS STILL ON. THE CONSUMER LEARNED TO DEAL WITH THE LIGHT, UNTIL ONE DAY, WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING, THE ABS PUMP BEGAN MAKING A LOUD GRINDING NOISE AND STOPPED ALL TOGETHER. CHRYSLER ADVISED THE CONSUMER TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP OF HER CHOICE. THE CONSUMERS MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY ABS PUMP. WHEN CHRYSLER WAS CONTACTED AGAIN, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE PART WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE. HOWEVER, THE REPAIR SHOP STATED THEY HAD ONE. CHRYSLER CLAIMED, THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE THE PUMP UNDER WARRANTY, AND THEY WERE CLOSING THE CASE.

I have had an amazing experience with my Imperial! I was looking for a car that was not only good-looking, but also dependable, economical, and unique, and the Imperial has exceeded my expectations. I constantly receive compliments on its unique front end, tailights, and formal roofline, and people are always surprised to learn that it's already 15 years old. The interior is absolutely sumptuous, with supple Mark Cross leather seats and a premium sound system that make every ride a luxurious experience. The car handles like a dream, without feeling too floaty like a boat. You'll feel surrounded by genuine luxury and security, and enjoy a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Although the engine may work a bit hard, the fuel economy is excellent.

You had a very reliable car that performed well, even after 13-14 years. It was a smooth ride and the interior was in unbelievable condition. Although it was a little slow out of the box and the transmission was a bit rough, you easily passed much newer cars on the interstate. The car was white with burgundy interior and had no rust. Overall, it sounds like you had a great experience with this car!

Hi there! It's great to hear from someone else living in a small town. I'm glad to hear that your car has been working well for you these past few years. It sounds like it handles the road really well and is reliable in the winter. Plus, it's awesome that you've been taking such good care of it by keeping it in the garage and changing the oil often. The fact that the tires are in great condition and the transmission was replaced just 3 years ago is a testament to your excellent maintenance. Thanks for sharing!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about a car I recently purchased. It had 69,000 miles on it when I bought it for $2000, and now it has 71,000 miles. I've had to replace a few things, like the water pump, hoses, rear brakes (rotors and pads), muffler, and battery, but overall it's been a pretty smooth ride. The car has great pickup and can keep up with a 1994 Crown Vic until about 90 MPH. It's also really comfortable on straight roads, although you do have to be careful on turns due to the
