2004 Buick Rainier problems

buick logo

The Buick Rainier is a mid-size luxury SUV that was manufactured by General Motors and marketed by Buick for the 2004 to 2007 model years. It was named after Mount Rainier, and — along with the Saab 9-7X — served as the replacement for the Oldsmobile Bravada.

History

The Rainier was introduced on July 28, 2003, for the 2004 model year, in a 5-door, 5-passenger configuration, yet was one of only five GMT360 SUVs to offer a V8 engine — along with the GMC Envoy Denali, Isuzu Ascender EXT, Saab 9-7X 5.3i and Aero, and Chevrolet TrailBlazer LT (optional) and SS. Both rear and all-wheel drive models were offered. The only trim available was CXL. An available Sun, Sound and Entertainment package for 2005 (previously called CXL Plus,) added a power sunroof, better Bose stereo, and XM Satellite Radio. For the 2004 model year only, there was a CXL Plus trim level, this became the aforementioned Sun, Sound, and Entertainment package for 2005. A touchscreen DVD-based navigation system was also available with the CXL Plus/SSE package. The 5.3 V8 was also available with the "V8 Power Play" package, which added a "V8" designation to the "RAINIER" script on the left side tailgate.

Buick also debuted the QuietTuning sound insulation on the Rainier, where a vehicle's sound dampening featured triple door seals, side acoustic laminate glass, and thicker sound-absorbing pads on the hood and firewall. The Rainier was the first production vehicle to use side acoustic laminate glass.

The Rainier was discontinued after the 2007 model year and was replaced by the Buick Enclave in 2008. GM ended production of the related Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy, and Saab 9-7X after the 2009 model year.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the 2004 Rainier an overall Marginal score for front impacts while the 2005 and newer models are given an Acceptable score. In side impacts the Rainier was given an overall Marginal score with side airbags present.

Common 2004 Buick Rainier problems

The Buick Rainier, a mid-size SUV produced between 2004 and 2007, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners.

  • Electrical Problems: Electrical issues are a common complaint among Buick Rainier owners. These problems can manifest in various ways, such as the speedometer registering the wrong speed, the dashboard display going completely dead, and the fuel gauge malfunctioning. Some owners have reported that tapping on the dashboard can temporarily fix the issue, while others have been told by dealerships that a $500 replacement part is necessary.
  • Faulty Transfer Case Encoder Motor: Some Buick Rainier owners have reported that their vehicles are stuck in all-wheel drive (AWD) due to a faulty transfer case encoder motor. This issue can lead to a "stiffer" feeling in the steering and can ultimately cause problems with the differentials if not addressed.
  • Inoperative Brake and Rear Turn Signal Lamps: A recall affecting certain 2004 Buick Rainier models involves inoperative brake and rear turn signal lamps. This issue can increase the risk of a crash due to a lack of communication with following vehicles.
  • Vibration and Heat Causing Tail Lamp/Stop Lamp Bulb to Loosen: Another recall affecting certain 2004 Buick Rainier models involves vibration and heat causing the tail lamp/stop lamp bulb to loosen in its socket. This issue can lead to flickering and eventually inoperative bulbs, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Exterior Door Handles Breaking: The exterior door handles in the 2006 Rainier have been reported to break, which can be inconvenient and potentially dangerous in emergency situations.
  • AC System Stopped Working: The AC system in the 2004 Rainier has been reported to stop working, which can be uncomfortable for occupants and potentially dangerous in hot weather conditions.
  • Multiple Electrical Issues: Multiple electrical issues have been reported in the 2005 Rainier, including problems with the speedometer, fuel gauge, and other dashboard displays.
  • Odometer Malfunctioning: The odometer in the 2004 Rainier has been reported to malfunction, which can make it difficult for owners to accurately track the vehicle's mileage.

These common problems among Buick Rainier owners highlight the importance of regular maintenance and addressing issues as soon as they arise to prevent more costly repairs and potential safety hazards.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-11-19
  • VIN: 5GADT13S542
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I NOTICED IN NOVEMBER OF 2016 MY BUICK RAINNER WAS SMELLING LIKE GASOLINE AFTER I GOT OUT AND LEFT IT RUNNING WHILE I WAS DROPPING STUFF AT HOME FROM WORK. WHEN I GOT BACK IN MY VEHICLE I DIDN'T SMELL ANYTHING, BUT COULD SMELL OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. I WENT ABOUT ANOTHER 10 MILES LATER TO MY DESTINATION AND PARK. 20 MINS LATER WENT BACK OUT AND CRANK MY VEHICLE AND COULD SMELL A STRONG GAS ODOR COMING THRU VENTS ON THE INSIDE OF MY SUV. I GOT OUT AND LOOKED UNDER MY HOOD AND DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG UNDER THE HOOD. WHEN I WALKED TOWARD THE BACK OF THE VEHICLE THE GAS SMELL WAS EVEN STRONGER. I CHECKED THE FUEL / GAS TOP TO SEE I LEFT IT OFF BUT IT WASN'T. THEN I LOOKED UNDER MY VEHICLE AND NOTICE FUEL WAS POURING OUT AROUND MY GAS TANK AND NOTICE A BIG WET SPOT ON THE GROUND UNDER THE TANK. WHEN I CUT OFF THE VEHICLE I NOTICE THE GAS COMING FROM AROUND THE TANK HAS STOP. HAD MY VEHICLE TOOKEN TO A LOCAL GM/ BUICK DEALER. THE DID A INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE AND SAID WHAT EVER THE PROBLEM WAS IT WAS AT THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK. SO GAVE THEM PERMISSION TO WORK ON IT AND FIND OUT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. TWO DAYS LATER THE DEALER CALL ME AND SAID THAT THE GAS LINES GOING INTO THE TOP OF THE TANK WHERE FUEL PUMP GOES INTO THE TANK GAS WAS LEAKING FROM THEM. THEY COULDN'T TELL ME EXACTLY WHAT CAUSES MY LINES TO START LEAKING AT THE TOP OF THE TANK. ( AFTER READING THIS NHTSA REPORT IN 2008 ON THE CAUSE AND GM/ BUICK EXTENDED A WARRANTY FOR 10 YEARS OR 120,000 WARRANTY). I'M TOTALLY UPSET ABOUT THIS BECAUSE NHTSA SHOULD HAVE DONE A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM TEN YEARS AGO INSTEAD OF CLOSING THE INVESTIGATION AS LONG AS BUICK MAKES EXTEND WARRANTY FIX. THE DEALER HAD TO ORDER THE PARTS FOR THE VEHICLE AND TOOK TWO DAYS TO ARRIVE. AFTER THE PARTS ARRIVE AND TWO DAYS MORE TO WORK ON IT. I HAD A $1200 BILLS THAT I HAD TO PAY A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-04-25
  • VIN: 5GADS13SX42
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HEADLIGHTS FAIL INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. WHILE DRIVING LAST NIGHT THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT. THE HIGH BEAMS STILL WORKED. THIS IS ABOUT THE SIXTH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. I CHANGED OUT THE HEADLIGHT RELAY JUST BEFORE THIS OCCURRED AS I HAD SEEN A RECALL ON 2006 AND 2007 RAINIERS SHOWING THIS AS THE PROBLEM. AFTER A SHORT TIME THE HIGH BEAMS ALSO WENT OUT. I PARKED AND TURNED THE ENGINE OFF FOR A WHILE AND WHEN I RESTARTED THE HIGH BEAMS WERE WORKING AGAIN BUT NOT THE LOW BEAMS. I WAS DOING A COMBINATION OF STREET AND HIGHWAY DRIVING AND IT APPEARS TO BE UNRELATED TO ANY ROAD CONDITIONS AS THIS HAS HAPPENED ON BOTH HIGHWAYS AND CITY STREETS.

  • Summary: I'VE BEEN HAVING SPORADIC FLICKERING LOW BEAM ISSUES WITH THIS CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT, AND HAVE SPENT UNTOLD HOURS AND TIME TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT INCLUDING TAKING IT TO THE DEALER. (I WORK NIGHTS.) LAST WEEK THE LOW BEAMS FAILED ON THE WAY HOME FROM WORK AT MIDNIGHT. RESEARCHED IT, AND FINALLY SAW THE RECALL FOR GMS AND SUBSEQUENTLY AN AP STORY ABOUT WIDENING THE RECALL THAT WAS DATED APRIL 29. (I WORK AT A NEWSPAPER AND SAW THE WIRE STORY). I BOUGHT AND REPLACED THE MODULE MYSELF LAST WEEK, AND THINGS ARE WORKING WELL NOW AND SEEM TO BE FIXED. HOWEVER, THE DEALER INFORMS ME THAT THIS CAR HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED IN THE GM RECALL FOR FAILING HEADLIGHT MODULES, SO I CAN NOT GET MY MONEY BACK FOR THE MODULE. THIS MAKE AND YEAR MODEL SHOULD BE ADDED TO THE RECALL. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT OTHER MODELS AND YEARS THAN HAVE BEEN RECENTLY RECALLED, ARE HAVING THIS ISSUE. IT TRULY IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND UP UNTIL LAST WEEK, I WAS ALWAYS WONDERING WHEN MY HEADLIGHTS WOULD FAIL. NOT A NICE FEELING WHEN YOU WORK NIGHTS.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-06-02
  • VIN: 5GADT13S642
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: HAVE NOTICED AFTER A HEAVY AND DRIVING RAIN THAT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ACTS UP. WE CALL IT CRAZY CAR! ALL THE DASH LIGHTS BLINK & FLASH, BELLS DING AND GAUGES FLUCTUATE WHILE THE VEHICLE IS AT REST AND ON THE MOVE. WE SHUT THE ENGINE OFF, SIT FOR A MINUTE AND RESTART ONLY TO GET THE SAME THING. THAT MAY HAPPEN FOR THE ENTIRE RIDE DURATION OR WE MAY GET NO DASH LIGHTS AT ALL. IT APPEARS TO ME THAT THERE IS A SHORT OR A MOISTURE THAT CREATES THIS HAPPENING BECAUSE AFTER A FEW DAYS OF GOOD SUNNY WEATHER WHERE THE WATER HAS EVAPORATED FROM THE ROADWAYS, OUR BELOVED RAINER COMES BACK TO NORMAL. WE STILL EXPERIENCE THE DIMMING OF THE HEADLIGHTS AS WE ARE DRIVING AT NIGHT WHEN WE ARE CRUISING WITH NO GAS PEDAL APPLICATION AT AROUND THE 32 MPH MARKING WHICH IS RATHER ANNOYING AS OTHER DRIVERS FEEL AS IF WE ARE FLASHING THEM. WE SEE A DOWN SURGE IN THE BATTERY GAUGE DROP FOR 14 VOLTS TO 11 VOLTS AND THEN COME BACK UP. SOMETIMES THIS CAN HAPPEN ONCE OR TWICE DURING A 10 MILE RIDE OR AS MANY AS 50! WE WONDER, WHEN, OH, WHEN WILL GM PAY ATTENTION TO THESE COMPLAINTS OR ARE WE JUST TALKING INTO THE WIND?

THERE IS NO SWITCH IN THE CABIN TO TURN THEM OFF AND THEY DID NOT TURN OFF ON THEIR OWN. I HAD TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY TO SHUT THE LIGHTS OFF AND PREVENT THE BATTERY FROM DRAINING COMPLETELY. I LOOKED AT THE FUSES AND RELAYS NEXT TO THE BATTERY AND NOTICED THAT THE SOLID STATE RELAY NUMBER 46 CONTROLLING HDM WAS BULGED OUT ON ONE SIDE AND SMELLED LIKE BURNT ELECTRONICS. I SWAPPED RELAY 45 INTO THE 46 POSITION AND RECONNECTED THE BATTERY AND THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS DID NOT ILLUMINATE WITH THE DIFFERENT RELAY IN PLACE. I NOTICED THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER:14V755000, IN MY CASE IT WOULD NOT SHUT OFF AFTER THE RELAY FAILED. I HAVE NEVER REPORTED ANY VEHICLE PROBLEMS LIKE THIS BEFORE BUT WONDER IF A WIDER RECALL MAY NEED TO BE CONSIDERED.

2004 Buick Rainier recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2004 Buick Rainier.

2005-05-05
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:TURN SIGNAL
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE DRIVER WISHING TO SIGNAL A TURN BY MOVING THE DIRECTIONAL SIGNAL LEVER, (UP OR DOWN) MAY CAUSE THE FRONT MARKER/TURN LIGHTS AND REAR TURN LIGHTS TO FLASH IN A MANNER SIMILAR TO HAZARD WARNING, RATHER THAN FLASHING ON THE DESIRED SIDE ONLY.
  • Consequence: THE DRIVER MAY NOT BE ABLE TO CLEARLY SIGNAL THEIR INTENTIONS TO TURN, CHANGE TRAVEL LANES, OR POTENTIALLY WARN OTHERS OF AN IMPAIRED VEHICLE OPERATING CONDITION INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SUSPECT FLASHER MODULES WITH A NEW FLASHER MODULE DESIGNED WITH SEALED RELAYS AND MORE DURABLE CONTACT MATERIAL INSIDE OF THE RELAYS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 4, 2005. ISUZU BEGAN MAILING OWNER LETTERS ON AUGUST 4, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, GMC AT 1-866-996-9463, ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727, BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080, AND OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.
2004-11-01
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, VIBRATION AND HEAT MAY CAUSE THE TAIL LAMP/STOP LAMP BULB TO LOOSEN IN ITS SOCKET. IF THIS OCCURS, THE BULB MAY FLICKER AND EVENTUALLY BECOME INOPERATIVE.
  • Consequence: AN INOPERATIVE BRAKE LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION OF STOPPING TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES, AND AN INOPERATIVE REAR TURN SIGNAL LAMP WILL NOT CONVEY THE DRIVER'S INTENTION TO TURN TO DRIVERS IN FOLLOWING VEHICLES. Negative 2004 Buick Rainier car reviews

I used to have a van, so I'm still adjusting to this new vehicle. However, I must say that the ride is excellent and the handling is great. I had running boards installed, but unfortunately, they don't provide much of a platform to enter or exit the vehicle. The rear door is also quite restrictive for getting in or out. I was surprised to find that there is more wind noise than I expected at highway speeds. In town, the fuel economy is only about 13.8, but I haven't been on the road yet. Connecting the rear seat belts is difficult due to a very short anchor strap. The rear seat heater is okay at low speeds, but it makes too much noise if turned up. I've noticed that the brakes feel somewhat spongy right now, so I'll have to have the dealer check them.

Hi there! I wanted to share some feedback on the seatbelts in GM cars. It seems like they might not be the most comfortable for everyone. Some people have reported that the front belts can cut into the neck of taller or larger individuals, while hitting smaller people in the face. However, GM does offer a free seat belt extension that can help you adjust the belt to your liking. It's worth noting that some people have reported that the belt doesn't always lock in place with the extension, which could impact its safety. Just wanted to share my thoughts!

The exterior finishing is of poor quality and the grill is misaligned. The lightweight metal is too flimsy and bends in and out while washing and waxing. The interior design of the center console, shift, and cupholders is poor. There is high wind noise, which becomes even higher pitched on windy days. On very windy days, the passenger door actually moves in and out with vibration. The front hood emblem position forces you to have to pull the hood up holding a plastic piece. It would be more convenient to have a rod to hold up the hood, especially for a top-of-the-line vehicle. Gas charged openers would be a more fitting feature for this type of vehicle. The carpet grade is another example of cheapness.

Hi there! I just wanted to share that I've been the proud owner of my Rainier since 12/31/2003 and I absolutely love it! I actually bought it sight unseen based on a recommendation and it has exceeded all of my expectations. It's fully loaded with a DVD system, Bose sound system with 6 cd changer, XM radio, OnStar, and every other option available for this SUV. It was my first SUV after always owning big luxury cars, and I have to say, I'm never going back! The best part is, I've never had to take it in for any service other than regular oil changes. Thanks for letting me share my experience with you!

Congratulations on your new purchase of a 2004 Buick Rainier! You made a smart choice by going with the 2004 model and taking advantage of the $3000 savings. With an additional $7000 incentive from GM, you got an amazing deal! The ride is incredibly smooth, even smoother than the MDX, 4-Runner or Sequoia. The interior is also impressively quiet, making it the best-built American SUV. Enjoy your new ride!

We've had this car for 18 months and we've absolutely loved the power of the 5.3 liter V8. The interior comfort is also excellent, making it perfect for our family of four.

After researching all the luxury midsized SUVs, I narrowed down my list to five: Lexus RX330, Toyota Highlander and 4Runner Limiteds, Infiniti FX35 and Buick Rainier. I test drove all five again and found that the FX35 felt like a fancy station wagon. Unfortunately, the 4Runner was a disappointment as it rattled and lacked the quality Toyota is known for. Although the Highlander reminded me of the RX300 I was replacing, the dull exterior and price didn't warrant serious consideration. Finally, only the RX330 and Rainier remained. Both are comfortable, luxuriously appointed and well constructed. However, I found that Rainier's rock-solid construction, luxury amenities and GM's financing make it a true value.

This SUV is excellent for long distance travel, towing, and light off-roading (beyond graded gravel). Its winter driving performance has been outstanding, and there have been no mechanical issues except for an over-iced rear wiper. The V8 performance is great, with decent mileage (19+ on the highway). Although the interior is a bit underwhelming for the price, it functions well and has also stood up well (no squeaks or rattles).
