The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car, marketed by Chrysler and manufactured by Karmann of Germany for the 2004 through 2008 model years.

Developed during the period when Chrysler and Mercedes Benz had merged, known as Daimler Chrysler, the two-seater uses the Mercedes-Benz R170 platform and shares 80% of its components with the first generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on the R171 platform with model year 2005; the R170 platform was essentially handed down to Chrysler for the Crossfire. Having initially arrived in 2001 as a concept car styled by Eric Stoddard, the Chrysler was further refined by Andrew Dyson before production began in 2003 for 2004 model year sales.

Design

The name "Crossfire" refers to two character lines that run from front to rear along the body sides, prominently crossing below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived during the period of Daimler Chrysler, the name also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.

The Chrysler Crossfire concept car was introduced at the 2001 North American International Auto Show and the production version was unveiled at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2004 model "is as faithful a translation from concept to production as any in recent memory." The concept car was designed "to evoke a strong, passionate, emotional response. We had to retain that. We want to polarize our audience—we want people to love it or hate it."

Conceived as a two-seat halo car for the Chrysler brand, the marketing objective was also to make use of available components using a two-seat roadster chassis. The production car shares about 39% of its parts with Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Chrysler dealers were required to invest in special equipment, tools, and parts to be able to market the new luxury model. The rear-wheel-drive Crossfire coupe styling objective was for a "unique, almost sculptural" design.

The Crossfire 's styling includes a wide stance with 19-inch rear wheels and 18-inch front wheels. Automotive journalists compared the Crossfire to American Motors' 1965–1967 AMC Marlin. Noted journalist, Paul Leinert said the "distinctive boat-tail rear end reminds more than one observer of the old Rambler Marlin." For example, Rob Rothwell wrote "... when I first espied the rear lines of the Chrysler Crossfire I was instantly transported back to 1965 and my favorite car of that year, the Rambler Marlin." Motor Trend also compared the "provocative boattail theme" of the 2004 Crossfire's sheetmetal to that of the AMC Marlin fastback. The Crossfire's tail is "formed as the edges of the roof converge into a kind of teardrop shape, leaving the rear fenders to flare out over the rear wheels."

Chrysler said the Crossfire took inspiration from the 1930s art deco period and buildings such as the Chrysler Building. Motor Trend cites vehicle influences from 1930s including Bugattis and the Talbot Lago. Chrysler wanted to once again offer a performance coupe reminiscent of the luxury reputation they enjoyed during the late 1950s to mid-1960s with the Chrysler 300 letter series coupes and convertibles.

Is Crossfire a good car?

  • Summary: My car has 47,800 miles on it and is a convertible. Its a known problem among crossfire owners and it hasn't been resolved. The problem is the rear window is coming undone and just falls out. The dealerships won't fix it and auto repair shops want thousands of dollars. It's not only a quality issue but a HUGE safety issue as well. If that window was to fall while someone is driving the car it could injure them while they are driving or possibly fall onto the road and causing countless problems and injuries to the other motorists driving behind the car. Its not an issue of the owner of the car being negligent or miss using the vehicle, its a quality and safety issue.

  • Summary: WHILE DRIVING I HEARD A BANG IN THE BACK AND SUDDEN CHANGE OF AIR IN THE CABIN - REAR WINDOW IN MY 2007 ROADSTER SEPARATED FROM THE TOP AND FELL INSIDE - THE ONLY THING THAT PREVENTED IT FROM HITTING ME IN THE HEAD WAS THE ELECTRIC WIRE (DEFROSTER) THAT WINDOW IS ATTACHED TO. I HAD TO GO BELOW SPEED LIMIT TO MAKE IT HOME SAFELY. CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO AND IT WOULD COST OVER $1,500 TO GET IT REPLACED, BUT TOPS ARE ON BACK ORDER RIGHT NOW AND IT WILL TAKE SEVERAL WEEKS TO GET IT IN. AFTER RESEARCH - SEEMS UNFAIR THAT A KNOWN PROBLEM THAT ALL OWNERS OF THIS CAR FACE WAS NOT ADDRESSED BY THE COMPANY.

  • Summary: Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. (MBUSA) is recalling certain model year 2009-2010 ML320 BlueTec 4Matic, GL320 BlueTec 4Matic and R320 CDI 4Matic, 2011 E350 Cabriolet and E550 Cabriolet, 2009-2011 ML350, ML350 4Matic, ML550 4Matic, ML63 AMG, and C63 AMG, 2010-2011 ML450 4Matic Hybrid, E350 Coupe, E350 4Matic, E550 Coupe, E550 4Matic, and E63 AMG, 2011-2012 GL350 BlueTec 4Matic and R350 BlueTec 4Matic, 2009-2012 GL450 4Matic, GL550 4Matic and R350 4Matic, 2007-2008 SLK280, SLK350, and SLK55 AMG, 2011-2014 SLS AMG Coupe, 2012 SLS AMG Cabriolet, 2013-2014 SLS AMG GT and SLS AMG GT Cabriolet, 2005 C230 Kompressor and C320, 2006-2007 C230, 2006-2011 C350, 2008-2011 C300 and C300 4Matic, 2010-2012 GLK350 and GLK350 4Matic and 2007-2008 Chrysler Crossfire vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: MBUSA will their notify owners, and Fiat Chrysler will notify the affected Chrysler owners. Dealers for the respective brands will replace the driver's frontal air bag module, free of charge. This recall began November 2016. Mercedes-Benz owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372 and Chrysler owners may contact Fiat Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403.

    I love many things about my car! For instance, I can easily smoke those little Mitsubishi's and VW's at red lights. Additionally, I consistently get 26-27MPG when driving 80-90 on the highway. I also love that I can put the top down without getting out of the car and take corners at 80 that my Jeep can only take at 50-60. Another great thing is that my wife can't pack 400lbs of clothes when we go on a trip and she is totally fine with that. But most importantly, I still get excited just looking at it even after almost 2 years. If my wife and I had to choose between each other or the car, we'd both take the car. I love my wife of 28 years and I love my car too!

    I bought the base model to get the 6 speed manual because I was told it wasn't available on the srt model. The Crossfire does have a much nicer interior and the convertible top is all automatic. However, I do feel that they could have pushed more horsepower out of that six. Just look at Honda's S2000 4 cylinders - no turbo or supercharger and it pushes more power, has less weight, a cheaper price, and a quicker 0-60. It also handles better.

This car is an absolute joy to drive - it's like becoming one with the vehicle. You've only had it for two weeks, but you're already in love with its sexy, curvy, and sleek retro design.     I was searching for a two-seater sports car and considered the Z-4, Miata, and similar cars. In my opinion, the Crossfire is by far more stylish than the Miata and cooler than the Z-4 and other options. I drive this car to work, 24 miles a day, and I absolutely love it. It's a real head-turner, sticks to the road, has a great average fuel economy of 24 mpg, and drives as good as it looks. It's a great value.
