2004 Chrysler Crossfire problems

chrysler logo

The Chrysler Crossfire is a rear-wheel drive, two-seat sports car, marketed by Chrysler and manufactured by Karmann of Germany for the 2004 through 2008 model years.

Developed during the period when Chrysler and Mercedes Benz had merged, known as Daimler Chrysler, the two-seater uses the Mercedes-Benz R170 platform and shares 80% of its components with the first generation SLK. The second generation SLK was built on the R171 platform with model year 2005; the R170 platform was essentially handed down to Chrysler for the Crossfire. Having initially arrived in 2001 as a concept car styled by Eric Stoddard, the Chrysler was further refined by Andrew Dyson before production began in 2003 for 2004 model year sales.

Design

The name "Crossfire" refers to two character lines that run from front to rear along the body sides, prominently crossing below the mirrors on the door panels. Conceived during the period of Daimler Chrysler, the name also refers to the collaboration of the two companies.

The Chrysler Crossfire concept car was introduced at the 2001 North American International Auto Show and the production version was unveiled at the 2002 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2004 model "is as faithful a translation from concept to production as any in recent memory." The concept car was designed "to evoke a strong, passionate, emotional response. We had to retain that. We want to polarize our audience—we want people to love it or hate it."

Conceived as a two-seat halo car for the Chrysler brand, the marketing objective was also to make use of available components using a two-seat roadster chassis. The production car shares about 39% of its parts with Mercedes-Benz vehicles and Chrysler dealers were required to invest in special equipment, tools, and parts to be able to market the new luxury model. The rear-wheel-drive Crossfire coupe styling objective was for a "unique, almost sculptural" design.

The Crossfire 's styling includes a wide stance with 19-inch rear wheels and 18-inch front wheels. Automotive journalists compared the Crossfire to American Motors' 1965–1967 AMC Marlin. Noted journalist, Paul Leinert said the "distinctive boat-tail rear end reminds more than one observer of the old Rambler Marlin." For example, Rob Rothwell wrote "... when I first espied the rear lines of the Chrysler Crossfire I was instantly transported back to 1965 and my favorite car of that year, the Rambler Marlin." Motor Trend also compared the "provocative boattail theme" of the 2004 Crossfire's sheetmetal to that of the AMC Marlin fastback. The Crossfire's tail is "formed as the edges of the roof converge into a kind of teardrop shape, leaving the rear fenders to flare out over the rear wheels."

Chrysler said the Crossfire took inspiration from the 1930s art deco period and buildings such as the Chrysler Building. Motor Trend cites vehicle influences from 1930s including Bugattis and the Talbot Lago. Chrysler wanted to once again offer a performance coupe reminiscent of the luxury reputation they enjoyed during the late 1950s to mid-1960s with the Chrysler 300 letter series coupes and convertibles.

Common 2004 Chrysler Crossfire problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2004 Chrysler Crossfire, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Broken Cup Holder:
    • Issue: The cupholder in the Chrysler Crossfire is prone to breaking.
    • Solution: Owners can replace the cupholder with a more durable trough designed for Crossfires built from 2004 onwards.
  2. Gear Stick Won’t Move:
    • Issue: The gear stick can get stuck in the park position.
    • Solution: This problem is often due to the brake/gear interlock being slightly misadjusted. While it can be fixed by tightening the assembly, it is recommended to seek professional help due to the complexity of the job.
  3. Check Engine Light:
    • Issue: The check engine light may illuminate without obvious reasons.
    • Solution: The most common cause is a faulty EGR solenoid. However, it is advised to inspect the check valve first. False error codes can also trigger the light, necessitating a trip to the Chrysler dealership for a PCM software update.
  4. Seat Heating Not Working:
    • Issue: The seat warmers may stop functioning.
    • Solution: Chrysler offers a specific repair kit to address this issue, which can be ordered for quick delivery.
  5. Alloy Wheel Corrosion:
    • Issue: Alloy wheels on the Crossfire are susceptible to corrosion.
    • Solution: Minor corrosion can be treated by rubbing down the affected area, treating it, and repainting. Severe cases may require professional intervention.
  6. Catalytic Converter Failure:
    • Issue: Early failure of the catalytic converter can lead to a rattling noise when starting the engine.
    • Solution: Replacing the catalytic converter is necessary to resolve this issue.
  7. Headlight Condensation:
    • Issue: Headlights are prone to condensation buildup inside the lens.
    • Solution: Owners can drill small holes at the bottom of the lens to allow water drainage or opt for replacement headlight units.
  8. Starting Problems:
    • Issue: Crankshaft position sensor failure can cause starting issues.
    • Solution: Replacing the crankshaft position sensor is essential to address this problem.
  9. Airbag Deployment:
    • Issue: Airbags may deploy unexpectedly, posing a safety risk.
    • Solution: Owners should visit a Chrysler dealer to address this issue, especially if there was a recall related to airbag deployment.

These common problems highlight the need for regular maintenance and prompt attention to issues to ensure the optimal performance and safety of the 2004 Chrysler Crossfire.

Is Crossfire a good car?

After driving the Crossfire, we came away wishing it had more low-end torque, slightly better steering feel, less interior plastic and better ergonomics in the cabin, but we can't deny how much fun the car is on twisty roads, or how upscale it feels when cruising along coastal highways.

Why did the Crossfire fail?

The Crossfire SRT-6 had a factory wing that looked cheap, and out of place, so the exterior styling was divisive, but the interior was where the Crossfire fell apart.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-28
  • VIN: 1C3AN69L44X
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: While cruising at 55 miles per hour, an unexpected occurrence took place – the engine abruptly ceased to function. I found myself on a two-lane highway in the midst of a construction zone, where the highway was reduced to a single lane, flanked by barriers. In a situation devoid of power assistance, I navigated the immobile vehicle between these barriers to reach a secure location, narrowly evading a potential accident. This issue is perilous and disturbingly common among these vehicles, yet it lacks a definitive diagnosis or solution. Even the computer scans fail to pinpoint the root cause behind this disruptive problem. I had no choice but to have the vehicle towed, and an automotive technician subsequently replaced the crank position sensor, just one of the many potential culprits in this recurring issue. Remarkably, the car operated without issue for two months, only to once again shut down without warning at high speed. Then, quite unexpectedly, approximately ten minutes later, the car miraculously restarted. This issue is perilous and disturbingly common among these vehicles, yet it lacks a definitive diagnosis or solution. It is imperative to stress that this problem is widely recognized and acknowledged, with countless owners repeatedly seeking assistance from dealerships, yet the issue remains unresolved. The gravity of this situation cannot be overstated, as these vehicles are prone to sudden shutdowns while traveling at high speeds. Urgent attention and action are needed to investigate and rectify this life-threatening concern.

  • VIN: 1C3AN69L64X
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE INTERSTATE AND ENGINE SUDDENLY CUT OFF AND I HAD TO PUSH IT TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I COULD HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED EASILY. THERE WAS NO POWER AND ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER, ONLY ELECTRONICS WOULD LIGHT UP AND ENGINE FAN WOULD RUN AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED.I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY CHRYSLER/MERCEDES WOULD NOT HAVE A RECALL ON THIS YET. APPARENTLY IT IS THE RCM MODULE THAT HAS BAD SOLDER POINTS SO I HAVE HEARD. VERY DANGEROUS THAT THIS IS HAPPENING TO A VEHICLE WITH UNDER 100K MILES. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE AND LEFT ME STRANDED A COUPLE TIMES, AND THIS TIME IT WOULD NOT START AT ALL SO I HAD TO GET A TOW TRUCK TO TOW IT 27 MILES HOME. IF THIS HAPPENED TO A NEW DRIVER OR ELDERLY PERSON THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS ON A ROAD TRIP OR DRIVING THROUGH ATLANTA OR SOMETHING.

Positive 2004 Chrysler Crossfire car reviews

  1. Jeramy Mills 2025-01-03

I recently stumbled upon my 2004 Crossfire by chance. While browsing a used car lot to check out a Porsche Cayenne, my wife spotted the Crossfire. The dealership had just repossessed the car and offered it to me for what was owed on it, which was a very reasonable price. I have owned many sports cars in the past, including a Jaguar XK8 and several Porsches and Jags that cost much more. At 60, getting in and out of the Crossfire isn't the easiest, but it's not too bad and somewhat expected. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Crossfire actually performs even better than my beloved XK8. It's a great looking and fun car to drive. I couldn't resist making a few upgrades, such as replacing the stereo with one that has Bluetooth and adding a carbon fiber dash kit to dress up the interior. I also ordered a performance chip, although the car is already fast enough without it. All in all, the Crossfire offers looks, style, and performance at an affordable price. What more could you ask for?

  2. Okey Simonis 2024-11-21

This car handles like a dream! It's a limited production vehicle, so it's not easy to get your hands on one. I was lucky enough to find one and I absolutely love it.

  3. Alfred Kshlerin 2024-11-16

This car is so much fun to drive! I was a bit hesitant at first because I had read some reviews that mentioned low end torque and performance issues. However, after test driving the Audi TT Turbo, the 350Z, the Infinity G35 SC, and the Mazda RX8, I can confidently say that this car is just as fast and handles twice as well as any of them. The interior is sleek and clean, making it a perfect choice for driving enthusiasts. I highly recommend going with the manual transmission!

  4. Enid Halvorson 2024-11-01

This vehicle is definitely a head-turner, and it's so much fun to drive!

  5. Amari Larkin 2024-10-18

Congratulations on your purchase of a 2004 Limited Coupe with a six-speed manual transmission and only 14,000 miles on it! While you and your wife already have other cars, having a sports car to drive to the California coast is a great idea. It's wonderful to hear that you really love this car, which is built by Mercedes in Germany and boasts their renowned quality. The ride is both comfortable and exciting, and it's no surprise that everyone who talks to you about the car has positive comments. Your neighbor even loves the sound of the car as you arrive and depart from your house! Although you mentioned that the first gear has a tendency to slip out with a loud noise about 20% of the time, it's reassuring to know that this is a known issue mentioned on Crossfire internet forums. Overall, it sounds like you have a fantastic car that will bring you many enjoyable drives in the future.
