The Volkswagen Taos is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was first released in October 2018 as the Volkswagen Tharu in China, while the Taos was released in October 2020 as a restyled version of the Tharu for the North American, South American, and Russian markets. In the brand's lineup, the vehicle is positioned below the Tiguan, and in South America and China above the T-Cross. It is not marketed in core European market.

The Taos is named after Taos, New Mexico. The Tharu name is derived after the eponymous Tharu people, an ethnic group indigenous to Nepal and Northern India.

Overview

The Taos/Tharu is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB A1, with its platform closely related and several sheet metals shared with the SEAT Ateca, Škoda Karoq and the Jetta VS5. Known as the 'Project Tarek' during development, the Taos/Tharu is considered the first Chinese-developed VW product that is sold outside China. Volkswagen's brand sales chief Jürgen Stackmann said the project "turned from a regional project into a global project." Global annual sales for the vehicle were projected at 400,000 units.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
  • VIN: 3VV2X7B25PM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On August 4th, 2024 Volkswagen Taos coolant reservoir at 17,348 miles was nearly empty. Went to closest dealership, which could not set appointment to look at until October 21. Every couple hundred of miles, I have had to refill the coolant level. The VW Taos was finally able to be diagnosed with a head gasket failure on October 21, 2024 with 22,359 miles. The parts and fix are a couple of months out, with no current ETA. Was given back vehicle to drive in the meantime. This is a major safety issue, as the gasket could completely fail at any time. This is also causing premature wear on the engine, as coolant will be leaking into the oil. The manufacture, Volkswagen, was contacted and unable to offer any assistance and told to keep driving in the meantime, since the dealer gave me back the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
  • VIN: 3VV2X7B23PM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: a low coolant light went on . Brought car in and head gasket and rear brake pads need to be replaced. the car has 16000 miles on it. This is unacceptable. !!!!!!!!!!!! I would like to know if the car will be replaced with the same faulty brake pads and the same faulty head gasket. These are know issues so why hasn't VW fixed both these parts and why would I want to same ones in my car that are known to be faulty.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
  • VIN: 3VVNX7B25PM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On 9/5/2024 I brought the vehicle into the dealer for the 30000 mile service. Upon inspection the dealer found the rear brake pads were badly worn and needed replacement and that they were not under warranty and that I would be responsible for the cost. In February 2024 Volkswagen sent me a notice that they were extending the warranty on the rear pads to 24000 mi / 2 years from 12000 mi / 1year but did not indicate why. I referenced this notice to the dealer and stated I thought the pads should be covered as even though I had 30000 miles on the vehicle it was only 18 months old and that the large discrepancy between the front and rear brake pads 10 mm vs 2 mm showed that the rear pads were subpar. That has gone nowhere. I have been trying to negotiate some kind of middle ground on this but with no resolution a this point. I realize the Web is not always a reliable source of information but I have found incidents similar to mine which also include two other issues that my vehicle has : Head gasket failure causing coolant leaks - this was found on my vehicle with repairs scheduled as soon as the parts come in. And severe hesitation during acceleration which was identified as a turbo issue which was corrected by an “ adaptation “ of the turbo which I should monitor ongoing which leads me to believe this could be a continuing issue. These two repairs were under warranty. Both of these issues pose concerning safety and performance issues. And a previous problem with the display screen that shows the backup camera, which was corrected after repeated visits . All these issues on the vehicle less than 2 years old cause me great concern about it being a safe car ongoing. I hope you find this information useful. Thank you

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-16
  • VIN: 3VVEX7B26PM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was attempting to turn left across on coming traffic, plenty of room safety wise. The engine lagged and would not speed up. Pedal almost the the floor and I was going maybe 5 mph, the car was barley rolling and had the two cars coming not been paying attention I would have been tboned. Once through the intersection the vehicle aggressively sped up. Took the vehicle into the dealership they had it 28 days, confirmed they felt the engine lag and ran diagnostics and couldn’t find anything wrong but whatever they did fixed it for about 3 weeks and now the engine is lagging again.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-01
  • VIN: 3VVNX7B26PM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle has 8000 miles on it and was sold to me knowing it had a well known head gasket problem. The vehicle has acceleration and overheating problems when it runs out of coolant which is leaking. The problem has been confirmed by suburban Vw in Farmington hills Michigan and it has been in service there since [XXX]. I reported the problem 8 months after purchase but they were unable to take it in due to many different reasons including lack of spare parts, not enough staff and no rental cars. I have had to top the coolant up on 5 occasions and have had leaks and stains on my garage floor which I reported INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 3VVCX7B25PM
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: Vehicle will take off like a rocket when accelerating from a stop. I had to restart the vehicle because it had no acceleration before issue started. Took to the dealer was told that this is normal. I was then advised to put the vehicle in sport mode and it should stop. Vehicle has only 3300 miles on it and this is a new issue that just started. Took it to a local shop and it showed a p2422 so we took it to the dealer and that’s when they stated no codes found and no issues found. We have multiple videos of the rocket take off.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-20
  • VIN: 3VVDX7B21PM
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The component that appears to have malfunctioned is the vehicle's turbocharger or acceleration system. This issue is reproducible upon request for inspection. The malfunction poses a significant safety risk as it creates a delay in the vehicle's response when turning, leaving the vehicle momentarily stranded in the middle of the opposite lane. This puts the driver and other road users at risk of collision. The problem has been confirmed by my dealership. They attributed it to turbo lag and advised against using Sam's Club gas. Despite following their advice, the issue has persisted. The vehicle has yet to inspected by my dealership. There have been no inspections by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives as of now. There have been no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure. The acceleration lag was initially subtle but has progressively become more severe over time. Whenever I attempt to make a normal right or left turn, my car hesitates for approximately three seconds before abruptly accelerating into the intended lane. This delay leaves me temporarily stuck in the middle of the opposite lane, creating a hazardous situation. The dealership diagnosed it as turbo lag and recommended against using Sam's Club gas, but the issue persists and has worsened. Now, the car exhibits significant acceleration lag after stopping for more than three seconds, followed by a sudden surge of speed. This behavior is particularly dangerous at intersections and during turns.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-20
  • VIN: 3VV2X7B25PM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle in April of 2023, brand new with 300 miles on it. The dealership then sold to a different dealership in June of 2023. In November/December of 2023, a light on my dash came on saying that my antifreeze was low. I opened up the hood and there was absolutely NO antifreeze in it. I called my dealership, they couldn't get me in until January 2024. So I filled it up with antifreeze and made it to my appointment in early January. The dealership told me that my previous dealership hadn't filled up my antifreeze all the way and that I had just burned that much since April. They topped it off and "checked all the lines". Then in April of 2024, the antifreeze light came on AGAIN. Not even 4 months later. I go check and AGAIN my antifreeze is completely EMPTY. NOT EVEN 4 MONTHS LATER! So I call the dealership and tell them what's going on. They get me in and then call me to tell me my head-gasket is blown. On my brand new car?!?!? So the dealership has now had my dealership since May 5th, 2024. It is now June 5th, 2024 and they are still waiting on parts. The car as of May 5th, 2024 had 12,000 miles on it. There were no signs of my antifreeze leaking, I park it in the garage everyday, nothing on the floor of the garage. The only thing that made me aware was the light coming on and screaming at me that I had no antifreeze.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: 3VVUX7B25PM
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: When I was driving on I-66 West yesterday on the Toll lanes with my family I had my cruise control on at 65 mph. Then suddenly the vehicle braked on it own without any warning messages. The braking was sudden and fortunately before coming to a complete stop in the middle of the interstate, I manually applied the brakes, briefly, to turn off the cruise control and then accelerate which seemed to resolve the issue. Hardly 2 minutes later, when I was not on cruise control and driving at around 65mph (the cruise button was on but not set at this time), the vehicle issued an Emergency Braking warning and started to brake very rapidly. This was very scary because braking or accelerating did not resolve the issue and vehicles behind me had to avoid hitting me from the rear. The only thing that worked was turning the cruise control off completely. Rest of the journey I decided to not activate cruise control button and the problem was not noticed. This is the first such incident (and hopefully the last) experienced on my barely a year old leased vehicle. Also as an FYI: (a) I have driven hundreds of times before using its cruise control without an issue. (b) I was West facing around 6:00 pm against the setting sun and I was about to go under a bridge when both the braking issues occurred.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
  • VIN: 3VVEX7B20PM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I purchased this car new less than 18 months ago and have been problems with it ever since. Brakes wear down prematurely and cause metal contact to rotors that causes bad screeching, stutters and affects my braking distance. I work for drive-share platforms as well as work as a personal driver for children in Ventura County and become more and more worried about the safety of my passengers as well as myself. I've taken my vehicle to the dealership multiple times and they keep repeating that everything is normal over and over again or that they fix whatever issue that they find but my car is still not fixed. This has been going on for over a year, they don't offer any help and they seem to ignore my concerns and I am very unsatisfied with Ventura Volkswagon and their customer service. I'm tired of having to pay to replace my rear brakes every 1-2 months, I want VW to find a better solution for me since this malfunction isn't only related to my vehicle. I see tons of other VW Taos owners complain online about the same issue and how VW just tells everyone that they need new brakes! Find a permanent fix, or give me my money back... They tell me to keep driving it as it is but I can't work with my vehicle in this condition knowing that the occupants' safety is compromised.

The contact stated that the TPMS warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer and the warning light was reset. The contact stated that the failure had reoccurred. The contact stated that the tires were defective; however, the dealer refused to replace the tires. The tire manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The tire failure mileage was unknown. The vehicle failure mileage was approximately 130,000. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • VIN: 3VVNX7B23PM

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-13
  • VIN: 3VVEX7B25PM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: My brakes went bad in under 5,000 miles they replaced the rear and now the front brakes are making noise. I have had to go into the dealer twice to get my coolant replaced. It needs it again and I feel we should not have to keep going into the shop when there is a known head gasket issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-11
  • VIN: 3VVEX7B28PM
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Navigation system is frequently giving an incorrect location. This has been occurring since I purchased the vehicle in September. My concern is that if I needed to transport myself or another to emergency services or if I needed to let emergency services personnel know my location I would be unable to do so correctly. Incidents such as mine are not unique if you can see here on the Taos forum. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-15
  • VIN: 3VVNX7B20PM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Two months ago I noticed an issue with my 2023 VW Taos. VW topped off the fluids and told me to stop back in if it happened again. Three weeks later I was 200 miles from home and it happened again. I stopped in another VW dealer and they topped off the fluids and said if it happened again to bring it in. Today, December 15, 2023 I take my vehicle to the VW dealer with ~22,000 miles and the service advisor and mechanic come over to me and said "we are not allowing you to leave in your car today". I asked why and they said the head gasket is gone and the engine needs to be taken apart. They said corporate requires pictures of this because it is a known problem with this engine between 20K and 30K miles the engine head gasket cracks, coolant light enables, and the engine can blow. They gave me a loaner and said plan to be in the car for a few months as we have a back order on parts, corporate needs to review this, and it will take time as we must remove the engine to repair the gaskets that are in between the upper and lower sections. I come home and log into a VW Taos forum online to find 6,000 people reporting this same issue in the US and Canada. This has not been recalled, but it is obvious from the forum that models between 2019 and 2023 with this specific engine type has this issue and it is well known to VW but they're not recalling it. I don't want a car after the engine has come out and gone back in. They need to take my car back and keep it! How can this be allowed in America?

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-08
  • VIN: 3VVEX7B29PM
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: While driving 65mph on fwy when the passenger side rear window SHATTERED! No rock, no bump, no shot, nothing. It absolutely imploded for no reason! The car was bought brand new ONE MONTH ago. It came with “factory tint” but it, too, disintegrated. I am very concerned about what caused this and when it may happen again. There is something really wrong with this window. The dealership says I will have to pay for it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-27
  • VIN: 3VV2X7B26PM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine cooling system has lost coolant. Very concerned because it is not leaking or evaporating - has entered the engine.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-14
  • VIN: 3VVFX7B24PM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: The throttle response from a stop in the Taos is not immediate. Sometimes it will take 2 seconds to react to throttle input. There have been times where you accelerate and it will go extremely slow ans then a sudden burst of acceleration. This can be extremely dangerous when pulling into a roadway with traffic. There is also not an immediate reaction when throttle is applied quickly at Highway speeds. Almost was hit 3 times while driving this car because it would not accelerate as expected.

Negative 2023 Volkswagen Taos car reviews

  1. Jamaal Spencer 2024-09-15

The base model seats may not be the most comfortable, as they have less padding than some of the competition. Additionally, some of the technical features can be frustrating and unreliable. For example, it can be inconvenient to have to use the fob to lock the doors when exiting the vehicle. Cell phones may also need to be frequently re-paired. However, the Taos does have some positive aspects, such as its affordability. Overall, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

  2. Lamont Shanahan 2024-02-15

As a veteran Volkswagen owner, I was initially excited about the Taos due to its size and interior. However, I have experienced some issues with the transmission and ride quality, as well as three occurrences in six months where the car slows down and the lights go on. Despite attempts to fix the issue, the cause remains unknown and I have decided to sell the car for safety reasons.

Positive 2023 Volkswagen Taos car reviews

  1. Tyrel Pacocha 2024-10-12

At half the price of most others and performance is excellent. Pick your best comparison and then go drive one. The SE trim level is the best one, as it includes all the options and even a heated steering wheel for cold winter days. The price is really affordable!

  2. Abraham Runolfsdottir 2024-09-09

I recently received the 2023 Taos as a company fleet car, which replaced a 2019 Hyundai Tucson. As a service technician, I rely heavily on cargo space, and while the Taos doesn't quite match the rear cargo capacity of the Tucson, it's not a deal breaker. However, Volkswagen could consider adding a totally flat load floor like other brands such as Ford, GM, and Hyundai. On the bright side, the HVAC controls are excellent, using simple and reliable physical dial knobs with more fan speed settings than I've ever seen in any other vehicle. The radio/Bluetooth music sound system is absolutely first-rate, and as a bit of an audiophile, I find it a total joy to listen to. The car warms up amazingly fast on the coldest of winter mornings, and in early February, we had zero to sub-zero mornings, and the Taos was blowing warm air within 1.5 miles of driving with no pre-warmup. That's right up there with the Chevy Equinox. The German DNA stamped in the car is evident the minute you enter and shut the door, and it really shines when you begin driving it. The drivetrain is silky smooth and very responsive, with instant, quick, smooth, and linear acceleration. It's much better than the Hyundai, and I mean it's not even close. The power heated seats were also very well done with the sewn inserts. However, the infotainment system as a whole isn't nearly as intuitive as the Hyundai or my wife's 2018 Equinox, and the phone and Bluetooth are a bit more cumbersome to get used to. Nice job by Volkswagen on the large display though, and the way they angled it towards the driver. Overall, I'm quite impressed with the Taos and its features, and I'm looking forward to driving it more.Finding a good driving position was really easy. The heated, beautifully done leather wrapped steering wheel is a really nice touch. I found the sticker price paperwork in the glove box, and it's a $29,000.00 car. I'm not sure if it's worth that much since I only buy used vehicles, but from all the company fleet vehicles I've driven, and personal ones too, the Taos is an excellent car. If I were looking for a service vehicle, I probably wouldn't choose this car as it seems a bit too nice for that purpose. However, if I were personally shopping for a nice compact station wagon, I'd seriously consider it. I say station wagon because the Taos drives and sits lower than most SUV/CUV's, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

  3. Brennon McDermott 2024-08-23

Taos S AWD... What a beautifully designed car! It has lots of cargo and passenger room, making it perfect for long trips with friends and family. Although there is a bit of cockpit noise during driving on rough roads, it's still a pleasure to drive. I was a bit disappointed that some of the standard options were not included due to component shortages, but overall I'm very pleased with the car and the price.

  4. Dejuan Smitham 2024-08-07

I can tell you really love your 2023 Taos SE 4Motion! It sounds like it has all the features that make it so fun to drive. The panoramic sunroof sounds amazing, and it's great that you're getting over 30 mpg! CarPlay, Assistive cruise control, and Bluetooth are all fantastic features too! It's no surprise that Edmunds rated this car #1 in its class. It must feel like an SEL!

  5. Oda Legros 2024-07-19

We absolutely love Taos SE! Its shape is beautiful, and the metal is strong!! We really enjoy driving it, it’s so easy to control. With 6 cylinders, the transmission is very smooth from gear to gear! It's also very comfortable to drive!!!
