2000 Chevrolet Metro problems

The Geo Metro was a marketing and manufacturing variation of the Suzuki Cultus available in North America from 1989 through 2001 as a joint effort of General Motors (GM) and Suzuki. In the US, the Metro carried a Geo nameplate from 1989 through 1997, and a Chevrolet nameplate from 1998 to 2001. It evolved with the Cultus and its siblings over 13 years, three generations and four body styles: three-door hatchback, four-door sedan, five-door hatchback and two-door convertible—and was ultimately replaced in the General Motors lineup by a family of vehicles based on the Daewoo Kalos, the Chevrolet Aveo.

From 1985 through 1989, Cultus-derived models sold in North America—under the nameplates Suzuki Forsa, Suzuki Swift, Chevrolet Sprint, Geo Metro and Pontiac Firefly—were sourced from Suzuki's facilities in Japan. Beginning in 1990, all North American M-cars were produced at CAMI Automotive, a 50–50 joint venture between General Motors and Suzuki in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada, although Japanese production continued to source Canada bound sedan models. CAMI never reached its intended Metro/Firefly/Swift capacity. While at its peak, Canadian Swift/Metro/Firefly production reached more than 100,000 vehicles a year, the number fell to just 32,000 in 2000. In response to the waning popularity of smaller automobiles in the North American markets, Chevrolet/Geo sold only 55,600 Metros in 1997, off from 88,700 the year before. In a 2004 Autoweek article, Osamu Suzuki, chairman of Suzuki, called CAMI "a fishbone in my throat" because of its low production.

Beginning in late 2003 as a model year 2004 car, the Daewoo Kalos, marketed variously as the Chevrolet Aveo, Pontiac Wave and Suzuki Swift+, effectively replaced the Metro/Firefly, although the Aveo is more of a Daewoo Lanos replacement as opposed to the Metro, the same time when Daewoo closed majority of its dealerships outside South Korea in 2002.

The Suzuki Swift was replaced by the Suzuki Aerio hatchback in 2002, although the Aerio also replaced the Suzuki Esteem.

Common 2000 Chevrolet Metro problems

The Chevrolet Metro, particularly the 2000 model, is known for its reliability and fuel efficiency, as evidenced by the positive reviews and experiences shared by owners. However, like any vehicle, it can still have certain issues that may arise over time.

One common problem reported by owners is a no-spark condition, which can prevent the engine from starting. This issue was discussed in a forum post by a 2000 Chevrolet Metro owner who noticed that the car would crank but not start after the battery went dead and was jump-started multiple times. The owner observed that there was no spark at the plug wire while cranking, despite getting 20 volts at the coil wire and coil when the key was turned. This issue was present even after the owner had replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, and wires 8,000 miles prior.

Another potential issue that may affect the 2000 Chevrolet Metro is related to the engine's fuel injection system. Some owners have reported that the engine may experience a surging idle from 2 to 3000 RPM, which can be caused by various factors, such as a faulty idle motor or multiple burnt valves. In some cases, a vacuum test may be necessary to diagnose the issue and determine if the engine has burnt valves.

Lastly, the Chevrolet Metro's engine is generally reliable, but it may experience low compression in one or more cylinders over time. This issue can be detected through a compression test, which is recommended for any Metro owner experiencing engine problems. Additionally, the car's frame horns under the front axles may be susceptible to rust, which can compromise the vehicle's safety and structural integrity. Therefore, it is essential to inspect these areas for rust before purchasing a used Metro.

In summary, while the 2000 Chevrolet Metro is generally a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle, it can still experience certain issues, such as a no-spark condition, surging idle, and low compression in the engine. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure the car's longevity and reliability.

Negative 2000 Chevrolet Metro car reviews

For what this car is about, getting from point A to point B, it does it, and with little gas. At 6'2

  2. Nicholas D'Amore 2025-03-19

The car has excellent gas mileage of 40mpg. Although, it has been in the shop 4 times for A/C work in 2 years, it still remains a great work car.

  3. Ryleigh Hartmann 2025-03-14

It sounds like you made a smart choice! Your car has great fuel economy, cheap insurance, and low maintenance costs. That's a winning combination!

  4. Vaughn Weimann 2024-07-06

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share a little bit about my car. When we found out we were expecting a baby, we knew we needed to find a car that would work for our growing family. We ended up finding a great deal on a car that I absolutely love! It's not too big or too small, and it's just the right size for me. I'm a bit on the shorter side, so I often have trouble fitting into larger cars, but this one is perfect. Plus, I usually don't have any trouble finding a parking spot! Thanks for listening to me ramble on about my car, I just really love it!

  5. Lisandro Hane 2024-05-05

I bought this car as my first vehicle when I turned 16 and it was worth every penny of the $5,000 we paid for it. It was reliable and great on gas, making it the perfect learning vehicle due to its low price point. Despite the fact that I really beat it up, it kept going like a trooper. Unfortunately, I recently rear-ended someone like an idiot and wrecked it. I only had liability, so I really regret losing the vehicle. I decided to write a review about ol' Blue, as I called it. You will be missed, RIP. You always got me from point A to point B.

  1. Jess Shields 2025-07-13

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2000 Metro. I've driven it for about 100,000 miles and it's been a great ride so far! I get an average of 45 mpg, even with my daily commute which includes highway driving, mountainous roads, and some stop-and-go traffic. I've never had any mechanical problems with it, which is amazing! I make sure to replace the oil and filter every 5k miles, and have replaced the plugs, manual transaxle fluid, brake pads, and tires once each, but everything else is still original. It handles really well under all conditions, except for high winds. The only downside is that acceleration isn't great, especially with the air conditioning on, but it's still acceptable. Thanks for listening!

  2. Mohamed King 2025-06-26

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new 10 years ago and it has been an absolute dream. I've never had any major issues with it, except for the a/c compressor failing at 80k miles. But considering I use the a/c every day, summer and winter, that's not too bad! I've kept up with regular maintenance and this car just keeps on going. Plus, I get an amazing 45 mpg and the insurance is really affordable. I've already put 124,000 miles on it and it still runs like a charm! Thanks for listening to my story.

  3. Winfield Kris 2025-06-22

Hey there! Looking for a car that's reliable, comfortable, and fuel-efficient? Look no further! This small car has great mileage and always starts, making it the perfect choice for your daily commute. Plus, it's much safer than a motorcycle and will keep you dry in any weather. Trust me, this car has everything you need!

  4. Mortimer Douglas 2025-06-07

I purchased this car used in 2008 with 61K miles. The inspection sticker was from 2003, indicating that it had not been driven for some time. Although it was rusty underneath, it was otherwise in good condition. After taking it off the road for 6 months due to heavy potholes, it cost $700 to repair due to being idle (it needed brake pads and rotors - I think all 4 wheels). I took it on tough city streets to work and eventually needed a new rack and pinion ($700). The A/C compressor went a year ago due to having to constantly use the A/C - even in the winter - to get the windshield and side windows defrosted. Despite these issues, this car has been great and still dependable. You may feel the bumps, but that's because it's a subcompact. It currently has 100k miles and gets about 20 local / 30 highway mpg with regular gas and an automatic transmission. Ultimately, I sent the car to the junkyard after another 5,000 miles or so because it was summertime and I couldn't handle not having A/C. However, a few years later (in May 2015), I bought another one (with 73K miles) - a '98 which has been terrific so far and was sold in early 2017. That car had an A/C problem, but a concerned mechanic replaced the compressor and the whole job was only $400. The '98 actually got about 36 mpg on the highway. The paint was badly faded when I got it. It had been a rental car for the first two years and 32K miles, and then driven by an older woman in Connecticut for all the intervening years, who had the dealer regularly service it. I sold it because it made me too daring cutting in and out of slow-moving traffic. It has a very good engine. I just bought a Chevy Prizm - the same type of car but a little bigger.

  5. Skylar Hane 2025-05-29

For a perfect car around town, this one has it all! It comes with new struts, exhaust, paint job, and timing belt. Plus, the AC works great! This car has held up exceptionally well, even though it's over 10 years old now. I wouldn't trade it in or sell it for any other car made, considering how well it suits my needs.
