1996 Chevrolet S-10 problems
The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.
In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.
The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Is a 96 Chevy S10 reliable?
Best vehicles I've owned
Got the 96, can't remember the mileage, about 5 years ago and am now at 197K+. Oyer than the normal upkeep it has been a reliable vehicle until this week. It is the process of getting a 5-speed tranny in it. my first big expense in over 150K miles.

- Summary: I READ WITH GREAT INTEREST TODAY THAT GM IS RECALLING SEVERAL PICKUPS AND SUVS FOR THE INADVERTENT APPLICATION OF ABS IN LOW SPEED STOPS. I WAS SURPRISED, HOWEVER, THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT NAMED. I DRIVE A 1996 CHEVY S-10 PICKUP, AND, ON THREE OCCASIONS, HAVE HAD THE ABS 'KICK IN' WHEN DOING A VERY GRADUAL STOP AT SLOW SPEEDS ON DRY PAVEMENT. TWICE I ALMOST REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. ONCE THERE WAS NO ONE AND I MERELY DRIFTED INTO THE INTERSECTION BY A FEW FEET. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU INCREASE THE SCOPE OF YOUR INVESTIGATION TO INCLUDE MY YEAR AND MODEL OF VEHICLE, AS IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS SUBJECT TO THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT HAVE DRIVEN YOUR CURRENT RECALL. - Summary: I WAS DRIVING A CHEVY S-10 WHEN A LADY PULLED IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS DOING THE SPEED LIMIT OF ABOUT 55-60 MPH. I ENDED UP HITTING HER CAR AND IN TURN MY TRUCK ROLLED OVER SEVERAL (6-10) TIMES. THE WHOLE TRUCK FROM BUMPER TO BUMPER AND SIDE TO SIDE AND TOP TO BOTTOM WAS DESTROYED. THE TRUCK WAS TOTALED. THE SEATBELT DID ITS JOB BUT NO AIRBAG CAME OUT. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK USED FROM A LOCAL CAR DEALER HERE IN CONCORD 2 YEARS AGO. I AM VERY BRUISED AND CUT AND VERY UPSET THAT JUST MAYBE IF THAT AIRBAG HAD WORKED I WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN ALL THAT GLASS ALONG WITH EVERYTHING ELSE FLYING MY WAY. I KNOW THAT AN AIRBAG WORKS WHEN IT IS HIT JUST RIGHT, BUT AS I STATED THERE IS NO PART ON THAT TRUCK THAT WAS NOT HIT INCLUDING THE FRONT BUMPER AS IT IS ALMOST OFF THE TRUCK. THE INSURANCE COMPANY IS TAKING CONTROL OF THE TRUCK AS WE SPEAK BUT THERE ARE NUMEROUS PICTURES AND WITNESSES TO THIS. I JUST WANT TO KNOW IF SOMETHING WAS WRONG AND THAT I DID NOT PUT ALL MY SAFETY ASSURANCES INTO THIS AIRBAG. THANK-YOU FOR YOUR TIME. CHRISTINE FLORO

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-05-21
- VIN: 1GCDT14W8T8
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: 1) THE HEAD LIGHTS ON MY 1996 CHEVROLET S10 HAVE NEVER WORKED RIGHT. AT FIRST, WHEN I TURNED ON THE IGH BEAMS, THEY WOULD STAY ON FOR LESS THAN A MINUTE, THEN I WOULD LOSE THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND THE DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS WOULD COME ON. THIS SITUATION IS GETTING STEADILY WORSE. NOW THE LOW BEAMS ARE EXHIBITING THE SAME PROBLEM. 2) THE HEADLIGHTS DON'T WORK, MEANING THAT I CAN'T DRIVE IT AT NIGHT OR WHEN IT RAINS. STATE LAW REQUIRES THAT THE HEADLIGHTS BE ON WHEN YOU USE THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS. 3) I HAVE SPENT THOUSANDS TRYING TO GET THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED, BUT THE SERVICE PERSONNEL JUST TAKE THE MONEY AND NEVER SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Nice truck! I would definitely recommend the V6 vortec, it makes driving so much more fun. Also, without 4wd it can be a bit rough in the snow.
-
This is such an awesome little truck! It's great for everything, especially in the snow - it slides around corners nicely and does great in the mud (I've never gotten stuck). However, it's not the best when it comes to rivers and bridges. On the bright side, parts for this truck are extremely cheap!
-
Many other reviews on this site rate this truck poorly, but let's take a closer look at their complaints. Some of them may seem a bit unreasonable. It's important to keep in mind that regular maintenance is crucial for any vehicle's longevity. If you use your vehicle heavily, you may encounter some issues, but that's normal wear and tear. Speaking from personal experience, I have a 96 s-10 that wasn't used heavily and was maintained properly, and I haven't had a single problem with it. If you're looking for a powerful truck, I highly recommend getting one with a v6. You won't be disappointed - this thing can really move!
-
Purchased in '02 with 107,000 miles, now has 165,000 miles with no trouble other than alternator, tires, brake pads (normal wearing items). Of course, I do all the normal maintenance that is supposed to be done since I have over 15 years of experience as an auto mechanic.
-
The quality of your vehicle is superb! It's great to hear that you've had virtually no trouble with it in the 8 years you've owned it.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with a 4cyl truck that I bought back in 1999. It used to be a company truck and had a few issues like the A/C not working and it had been in an accident before being sold. At the time, it was the only thing I could afford. However, I found that it wasn't the best choice for anything other than work purposes. I ended up having to replace the engine due to highway usage, as well as the clutch, slave cylinder, master clutch cylinder, driver seat, and the power brake is starting to go out. If you're looking for more reliability, I would recommend buying a full-size truck, whether it be a Chevy or Ford. Hope this helps!

Hi there! I am the original owner of my 4wd ext. cab ZR2 with 100K mi as of 12/05, and I have to say, it has been a blast to drive off road and to haul stuff with. However, there have been a few major repairs that have cost quite a bit of money: Tranny at 50K mi, fuel pump, pwr window motor & switches, 6 batteries, oil leaks, two A/C units, two alternators, electrical problems, idler pulley and recently some ignition system problems. Despite all of this, the 4.3L Vortec V6 has been strong and burns no oil. Although it only gets 16 MPG on the highway, it is still a great vehicle for off-roading and hauling. I'm convinced the ABS never worked right in spite of at least 3 recalls/bulletins, but overall, I still love my truck!
Ewell Kerluke 2024-06-09
The S10 had a 4.3 V6 engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, the front brake pads and Delco batteries did not last very long on this truck. The battery had to be replaced three times in just six years. Major issues began to arise at around 45,000 miles, starting with the alternator dying. At 50,000 miles, the transmission failed. However, the dealership was able to replace the transmission, clutch, and slave cylinder with a new one. A couple of months later, the AC stopped working. Unfortunately, about 14 months after having the new transmission put in, it started to malfunction again. Despite regular maintenance and careful driving, this truck experienced several issues.
Evan Larson 2024-05-25
I have experienced multiple issues with this vehicle, including 3 rear main seal leaks, 2 oil pan leaks, and 9 rear pinion seal leaks, which unfortunately continue to persist.

Hey there! I just wanted to let you know that some Chevy trucks were shipped with a faulty head gasket and a few other issues that can cause some thumping noises. Unfortunately, the 2.2L engine doesn't have a lot of power. On the bright side, my old '88 Chevy (which I sold to a friend) is still running strong with over 250k miles! However, I am currently at 150k miles and need to rebuild everything. Just wanted to give you a heads up!
