2015 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems

mercedes-benz logo

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2015 Mercedes-benz Sprinter 2500 problems

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 2015 has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. These issues include:

  • Broken Exhaust Flex Pipe: This issue is common in the 2007 or the 906 chassis with the V6 OM642 diesel engine. Leaks from the exhaust, coming from the flex pipe, can melt the nearby wiring, causing the engine to shut off, not restart, and start the counter.
  • No Start Count Down Dep-Counter: The Sprinter 2010 and newer models with Bluetec will start counting down any remaining start cycles if there are issues with the DEF level or Nox sensors and other components related to the DEF/Adblue. If the countdown has started, it's strongly recommended to have your van diagnosed before it gets to the last few remaining start cycles.
  • Clogged DPF: The Diesel Particular Filter (DPF) in Sprinter's grabs soot from the exhaust. The DPF will gather soot until it reaches a level to perform regeneration. During regeneration, the ECU will cause the DPF to reach a very high temperature, approximately 1,200F, and burn the soot. If the ash builds up inside the DPF, it will not burn out if the wrong engine oil is used. The DPF can clog and restrict exhaust flow. If the content of ash is too high, you can manually force DPF generation with SDS Start Scanner. If that fails, the only option is to replace the DPF.
  • Reduced Power / Limp Mode: Sprinters have a Limp Mode, a safety feature that protects the engine from damage. It may be activated if you push the engine to the limit. When the Check Engine Light starts flashing, that is an indicator of Limp Mode. It tries to lower engine power to prevent worse scenarios. Switching the turbo off forces the owner to get the van to the Sprinter shop and have it serviced.
  • Oil Cooler Leaks: Oil cooler leaks are common on the 2007 to present models with the OM642 engine. The oil cooler seals are where most of the engine oil leaks take place. As of late, Mercedes has updated the seals with a better material made from Viton, which increases their life. However, reaching it can be difficult, making the oil cooler expensive to repair.
  • Glow Plug Problems: Just like all diesel engines, the glow plugs and modules in the Sprinter will not last forever. Sometimes the plugs will break off in the cylinder head. There is a special tool to drill out and extract the glow plug without removing the cylinder head. Pricing can vary on glow plugs, depending on the engine and year.
  • Injector Issue or "Black Death": Another problem usually called "Black Death" is the copper seal ring which is located in the middle of the injectors and cylinder head. It deteriorates and can cause combustion gasses to escape. In turn, the black tar and coal-like material will accumulate over the fuel injectors. Removing and/or replacing injectors are usually caused by copper seals not being replaced with new ones or seals not being properly installed, allowing for combustion gasses to leak over time.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common in Sprinter vans. The torque converter may wear out, causing a shuddering in certain circumstances. To fix this, the transmission needs to be taken out, rebuilt with HD parts, and reinstalled. This is more durable than the original and less costly than a new one.
  • Rear Air Suspension Failure: The rear air suspension system in Sprinter vans can fail, causing the vehicle to sag in the back. This can lead to issues with handling and stability, and may require replacement of the air suspension components.
  • Electrical Issues: Sprinter vans have been known to have various electrical issues, including problems with the radio, horn, and other electrical components. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and repair, and may require the assistance of a professional.

WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-30
  • VIN: WDAPE7CD2FP
  • Components: WHEELS,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Two separate incidents where wheel speed sensors failed. One in June 2022; one in September 2023. This disables antilock braking (ABS), electronic stability control (ESC), forward collision warning (FCW), brake force distribution and cruise control. Almost all safety features are disabled. Previously a safety recall has been implemented for the 5 ton Mercedes Sprinter model (3500), for these same faulty wheel sensors. Service for these Sprinters is difficult to schedule when traveling with an upfitted Class B (Roadtrek) RV like ours. The sensors are covered for replacement with our 10-year extension warranty for the emissions system, but only after failing. This places the driver + occupant (s) at risk until an available service center can be found and an appointment scheduled. Please issue a safety recall so we can have our remaining 2 wheel speed sensors replaced prior to failure.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-12-23
  • VIN: WD3PE7DC7F5
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THE 2015 MERCEDES-BENZ SPRINTER CRUISE CONTROL SHOWS NO ICON WHEN ACTIVATED. THE CRUISE CONTROL, LEVER IS LOCATED CLOSE TO THE TURN SINGLE SWITCH AND HAS A SIMILAR DESIGN. MAKING IT EASY TO ACTIVATE BY MISTAKE. THE DESIGN I BELIEVE IS NOT A THE PROBLEM. BENZ HAS USED THIS LAYOUT FOR YEARS ON ALL VEHICLES. THE FACT THAT THE DRIVER IS NOT INFORMED IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. I QUESTIONED MERCEDES ABOUT THIS AND WAS TOLD, THE 2016 MODELS HAVE A ICON THAT DOES SHOW THE SYSTEM IS ON. INCLUDING SHOWING SET SPEED. BUT IT DOES NOT STAY ON. SIMPLY PUT IT SHOWS ICON AND SPEED WHEN ACTIVATED BUT ONLY FOR A SECOND OR SO. THIS I FEEL IS ALSO A SAFETY PROBLEM. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT ABOUT ANYTHING BUT THE LACK OF INFORMATION THE VEHICLE EXTENDS TO THE DRIVER. I HAVE AND WILL CONTINUE TO BELIEVE MERCEDES IS A LEADER IN AUTO SAFETY. ITS HARD FOR ME TO BELIEVE WITH TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY, BENZ OVER LOOKED THIS. MERCEDES HAS OFFERED ME NO FORM OF RESOLVE. SO I REQUEST, ON BEHALF OF ALL SPRINTER OWNERS WITH CRUISE CONTROL THAT THE NHTSA LOOKS INTO THIS. PLEASE INFORM ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS ON THIS. THANK YOU . *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-07-09
  • VIN: WD3FE8CC0FP
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: ON THURSDAY JULY 9TH AFTER 9:00 PM, I WAS DRIVING UP ROUTE 8 IN VIRGINIA FROM NORTH CAROLINA AND MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. MY VAN HAS SUFFERED FROM SUBSTANTIAL NOISE AND VIBRATION BETWEEN 1600 AND 2000 RPM ON SLIGHT GRADES SINCE THE DAY AFTER I PURCHASED IT. WITH JUST SHY OF 20,000 MILES ON THE VAN, MUCH OF IT GOING UP AND DOWN GRADES, IT IS MY PERCEPTION THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID HOSE VIBRATED LOSE. ALMOST 500 HOURS OF DRIVING, JUST SHY OF 20,000 MILES IN TEMPS THAT VARIED FROM LOWS OF 40 TO HIGHS OF 110, AND CONSISTENT VIBRATIONS DURING THE SPECIFIED RPM AND THE HOSE VIBRATED LOOSE AND LOST POWER. THE VIBRATIONS ARE A KNOWN ISSUE FOR SPRINTER 4X4'S AND THEY HAVE TRIED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE UNSUCCESSFULLY WITH DAMPENING AND THICKER LEAF SPRINGS. THIS REMAINS INEFFECTIVE AND NOW, DANGEROUS. I AM GRAVELY CONCERNED THAT OTHER ITEMS IN THIS 4X4 MODEL VAN COULD COME LOOSE, OR WORSE SOMEONE ON A MOUNTAIN PASS COULD LOSE CONTROL AS I DID AND CAUSE A FATAL ACCIDENT. DUE TO THE 4X4 SYSTEM AND THE DESIRE OF IT'S OWNERS TO DRIVE TO REMOTE PLACES, I FEEL THIS WARRANTS AN IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION TO PROTECT THE OWNERS WHERE DIAMLER VANS HAS CLEARLY DECIDED NOT TO MANAGE IT'S SAFETY. IF ANYONE HAD COME DOWN THE SWITCHBACKS ON ROUTE 8, NEITHER OF US WOULD HAVE HAD ENOUGH TIME OR SPACE TO AVOID AND ACCIDENT. I WAS INCREDIBLE LUCKY. I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE ACROSS THE ROAD LINES TO MOVE THE VAN AS I COULD NOT CONTROL THE STEERING. I FEARED FOR MY LIFE UNTIL I GOT TO THE TOP OF THE SWITCH BACK AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER ON RELATIVELY STRAIGHT FLAT GROUND. THE TRAILER I WAS TOWING SUFFERED AS I WAS NOT ABLE TO ARTICULATE THE VAN ON THE ROAD SUCH THAT IT DID NOT GO OFF THE ROAD AND HIT TREES AND EMBANKMENT.. .UPDATED 07/21/15 *BF.....UPDATED 08/12/15 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE SUSPENSION WAS REPLACED. HOWEVER, IT DID NOT RESOLVE THE VIBRATION ISSUE. ...UPDATED 9/24/2015 *JS

  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2015 MERCEDES BENZ SPRINTER 2500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V764000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT EQUIPPED WITH THE TOOLS TO PERFORM THE RECALL REPAIRS. A SECOND AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS CONTACTED, WHO INDICATED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND THE CONTACT WAS PLACED ON A WAITING LIST WITH NO ESTIMATED TIMEFRAME AS TO WHEN THE REPAIR WOULD BE PERFORMED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO PROVIDE A REASONABLE TIMEFRAME TO INDICATE WHEN THE PART AND APPOINTMENT WOULD BE SCHEDULED. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.

  • Remedy: DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will remove the windows and inspect the paintwork, repainting the vehicles as necessary, free of charge. This recall began August 4, 2016. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-770-705-2070.
