1995 Chevrolet S-10 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet S-10 is a compact pickup truck produced by Chevrolet. It was the first domestically-built compact pickup of the big three American automakers. When it was first introduced as a "quarter-ton pickup" in 1981 for the 1982 model year, the GMC version was known as the S-15 and later renamed the GMC Sonoma. A high-performance version of the latter was released in 1991, called "Syclone." The pickup was also sold by Isuzu as the Hombre from 1996 through 2000, but only in North America. There was also an SUV version, the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer/GMC S-15 Jimmy. An electric version was leased as a fleet vehicle in 1997 and 1998. These models are sometimes internally referred to as the S/T series to denote two and four wheel drive models respectively (similar to the full size Chevrolet C/K trucks) despite all versions being badged with 'S' nomenclature.

In North America, the S-series was replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Isuzu i-Series in 2004.

The S-Series ended production in Brazil in 2012, being replaced by the Chevrolet Colorado, but still with the name S-10.

Common 1995 Chevrolet S-10 problems

The 1995 Chevrolet S-10 is a popular pickup truck known for its reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it can have certain common problems that owners may encounter. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1995 Chevrolet S-10, based on search results:

  1. Faulty Heater Core: A faulty heater core can cause cold air to blow from the heater, and it requires the removal of the upper engine parts like the fuel lines and the A/C compressor. The heater core can get plugged up due to sediment or lack of proper flushing, causing the engine to overheat or the windshield to fog up. To replace the heater core, the dash, steering column, and heater box must be removed, making it a big job but not too difficult.
  2. Distributor Problems: Chevy S-10 distributor problems can cause engine misfires, engine turning over but not starting, and check engine light for misfire code P0300-P0306. Common problems with the distributor include a bad distributor cap and rotor or worn internal parts. To fix distributor problems, the distributor must be removed and replaced.
  3. Coolant and Oil Leaks: Coolant and oil leaks are common problems in the 1995 Chevrolet S-10, especially in the V6 version. Coolant can leak at the intake, causing the engine oil to get contaminated. Upper control arms can also develop leaks, causing the truck to sag or pull to one side. To fix coolant and oil leaks, the affected parts must be replaced.
  4. Fuel Level Sensor: The fuel level sensor is located in the fuel tank and can cause an erratic fuel gauge and inaccurate fuel level. To replace the fuel level sensor, the fuel tank must be removed and disconnected from the fuel lines.
  5. MAP Sensor: The MAP sensor, also known as the manifold absolute pressure sensor, is located in the intake manifold and can cause poor acceleration, running rough, hard to start, and check engine light. To replace the MAP sensor, the bolts must be removed, and the sensor disconnected from the wire.

These are some of the most common problems reported by 1995 Chevrolet S-10 owners. While these issues can be frustrating, they are generally fixable with the right tools and knowledge. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these problems from occurring in the first place.

What is the fuel mileage of a 1995 S10?

Fuel economy came in slightly below the S-10's EPA rating of 23 miles per gallon in the city and 29 on the highway. With the air conditioner running most of the time, the test truck delivered 21 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

What engine does an S10 have?

The Iron Duke 4-cylinder and 2.8 L 60° V6 engines were discontinued, the 4.3 L Vortec V6 was enhanced, and a new 2.2 L 4-cylinder engine (which had been introduced in 1990 on various front-wheel-drive GM compact and mid-size platforms) became the engines of choice to power the second generation of S-10s.

Why did Chevy stop making s10s?

Chevrolet discontinued the S10 pickup truck in 2004. This was 22 years after its first launch in 1982. It was replaced largely for the same reason that a lot of modern vehicles are: fluctuating trends of the ever-changing automotive industry and changing consumer demands.

What transmission does a S10 have?

Automatic variants were equipped with either a 4L60 transmission, or a 4L60E transmission (depending on the year). Both gearboxes were extremely capable, but time and mileage can take their toll, resulting in many Chevrolet S-10 transmission problems.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-06-06
  • VIN: 1GCCT19W4S8
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT, THERE IS A CARBON BUILD UP IN THE ENGINE, AND WHEN SOME OF THIS CARBON FLAKES OFF IT CAUSES THE EGR VALVE TO STICK OPEN SLIGHTLY. THIS IN TURN CAUSES THE ENGINE IDLE VERY ERRATICALLY AND MOST OF THE TIME CAUSES THE ENGIE TO STALL. THIS ALWAYS OCCURS WHEN SLWOING DOWN AND STOPPING WHICH IS QUITE THE SAFETY HAZARD AS WHEN THE VEHICLE BEGINS TO LOSE POWER AND STALL ALL THE POWER OPTIONS SUCH AS STEERING AND BRAKES ARE ALSO LOST. THIS HAS ALMOST CAUSED ME TO REAR END PEOPLE NUMEROUS TIMES ESPECIALLY IN SITUATIONS WHEN I HAVE HAD TO STOP QUICKLY. I WAS INFORMED BY MY MECHANIC THAT THIS ACTUALLY A RECALL AND WHENI CONTACTED CHEVROLET THEY SAID IT WAS NOT AN OFFICIAL RECALL BUT IF MY VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 75,000 MILES ON IT I COULD HAVE THE PROBLEM FIXED. OF COURSE I HAD MORE THAN 75,000 MILES AND SO THEY REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. OTHER THAN THIS MY TRUCK RUNS GREAT AND I LIKE IT BUT IT WILL COST APPROXIMATELY $700-$1000 TO HAVE THIS FIXED AND IN ALL HONESTY IT IS NOT MY FAULT THAT MY TRUCK DID NOT BREAK UNTIL AFTER THE 75,000 MARK. INSTEAD I AM BEING FORCED TO GET A NEW VEHICLE AND SPEND MONEY I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BECAUSE THE TRUCK IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THE REAPIRS ARE TO EXPENSIVE IN COMPARISON TO THE ACTUAL VALUE OF THE TRUCK.

Negative 1995 Chevrolet S-10 car reviews

  1. Forest Conn 2024-11-28

I purchased my truck brand new back in '95 with only 14 miles on it. Unfortunately, after just 4 years, everything started to fall apart. At around 38,000 miles, the bearing came apart and at around 40,000 miles, antifreeze started leaking down the side of the block. To make matters worse, the head bolts broke off in the engine, causing a leak. At 48,000 miles, the starter fell off and both starter bolts broke off in the engine. The only positive thing I can say about this truck is that it looks sharp. However, it is a piece of junk with a nice-looking body. I will never purchase a Chevy or GM vehicle again.

  2. Jerald Mills 2024-09-22

Your truck has been very reliable. Although it lacks power to head off-road, it makes a great in-town small truck with its 2WD and 4.6 191 hP engine.

  3. Austin Senger 2024-08-14

I bought this truck back in 1996 with only 6600 miles on it. Unfortunately, it has had a lot of problems since the day I drove it off the lot. Over the years, I have had to replace almost everything on it, sometimes more than once. While it did have a few minor recalls in the first couple of years, the bigger issues are what really bother me. Now that it is no longer under warranty, it is costing me a lot of money to keep it running. Every time I fix one thing, another problem seems to pop up. For example, I am currently having to replace the rear main seal for the third time- it was already replaced in 1996 and again in 2003. As my first truck, it has left me feeling disappointed. I am now considering a Toyota for my next truck. They make great vehicles that I can rely on!

  4. Stephan Schultz 2024-07-01

I really appreciate the way you sit in the truck. It's just the right height and feels comfortable. The manual transmission is also great, with a smooth clutch and easy shifting. While there have been a few issues, such as the head gasket going out at 90,000 miles and the exhaust needing replacement a couple of times, overall it's been a reliable vehicle. I did have a bit of a scare when the side mirror fell off on the interstate, but thankfully it was fixed. The blower switch and turn signal switch have had some problems, but they were manageable. The thermostat also failed once, but it was fixed along with the plug and wires at 150,000 miles. Unfortunately, the head gasket has developed an internal leak at 156,000 miles and will need to be replaced. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving this truck.

  5. Arjun Corwin 2024-06-25

I bought my S-10 used with only 6000 miles on it. It's a great truck for running errands around town and for light work. It runs smoothly on the highway and I love the extended cab. The only downside is that it rides like a small truck and the seat isn't very comfortable, which can be tough on long trips. I've noticed a peculiar vibration in the motor and it vibrates at stop lights while in drive, but I've driven it that way for 60000 miles and it still runs smoothly on the road. It's not the best in the snow, but adding 100-200 lbs in the box can help with traction.

You can rely on this truck to take a beating. No matter how much you abuse it, it will keep running strong.

  2. Quinton Klein 2024-08-25

I think this truck would be a great purchase for someone who needs to tow small items and wants good gas mileage. However, as someone who is six foot four inches tall, I find it a bit too small for my needs. That being said, I really appreciate how reliable this truck is.

  3. Craig Funk 2024-07-17

I bought this vehicle just before Christmas because I needed a small truck for projects around the house. My family and I really enjoy it. I've had trucks and SUVs in the past and I miss them, but this one holds up very well. We've even crossed rivers and driven through some backwoods areas that my family owns, and we never got stuck once. The ride is like a 4WD truck, so don't expect it to be like a G35 coupe. Despite having high mileage, the engine still has plenty of power and there aren't as many leaks as I expected, except for someone stripping the oil pan plug. The steering needs to be rebuilt, but I predict that I'll be happy with it once the small projects are finished. The body is really solid with no rust, and the bed is great too.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the car you're interested in is a real gem! It has 118K miles on it and the A/C compressor has been recently replaced. Let me know if you have any questions!

  5. Edgar Hartmann 2024-02-08

I absolutely adore my truck! It has been such a reliable and affordable mode of transportation for me over the past 12 years. Although I have encountered a few issues, most of them were covered under warranty during the first 36,000 miles. Since then, I have only had to replace the alternator, battery, and U bolts. The truck runs like a dream and burns no oil, making it a fantastic vehicle. While it may ride a little rough, it is incredibly easy to park and provides excellent visibility. The only minor issue I have had was when the radio volume knob fell off, but it was amusing to see that the same thing happened to another driver with the exact same truck!
