2000 Chevrolet Malibu problems
The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.
Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.
First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)
The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.
For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.
The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.
For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

2000 Chevrolet Malibu recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 2000 Chevrolet Malibu.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

I purchased my Malibu back in May of 2000, and it has been a reliable car for me. Currently, it has 33,400 miles on it. Recently, I had an issue with the selector knob for the blower, which was blowing air out of all areas. However, after taking it apart, I realized that the black rubber gasket was not in place. I readjusted it, and now it is working perfectly fine. Unfortunately, I have noticed that my tires are cracked inside the tread, and one of them is even bubbled up on the outside, causing a wobbling sensation. So far, I have not experienced any brake problems. Additionally, there is a knocking sound coming from under the hood until the car warms up. Overall, I have been happy with my Malibu, and I hope to continue driving it for many more years to come.

When I bought my car, it only had 28,000 miles on it. Although it needed new tires, brake work, and air conditioner fluid due to sitting for a couple of years, it runs great and never has any problems. It drives extremely smooth and I usually get about 28 mpg. This car is my first and I'm a junior in high school. I'm confident that it will last me well through college!

My Malibu is a purple colour with a hot spoiler, bra, and chrome exhaust. The interior has a lame checker weaving, but I eventually got used to it. Despite having my share of problems, I would recommend it to anyone. I have a big problem with the piston making a knocking sound, so I took it in, and they said it was normal, but it sure doesn't sound like it! And just like most Malibu owners, my brakes keep warping, and I will need new rotors next time it happens. I've noticed that a lot of Malibus seem to get front driver-side flats all the time. Oh well!

After 26 months, I have driven 47,500 miles and it has been on many trips and other adventures. Overall, it has been great! At 30K, I had to replace the front brakes, but other than that, it has been perfect. Although the radio speakers are starting to have some issues, it's only a minor problem. All in all, I think it's a great car!

I love my Malibu! It's such a classy and stylish car, and it's incredibly comfortable to ride in. The Bronze exterior is absolutely gorgeous, and the paint job is excellent. The best part of this car is the power - it has an excellent kick! Plus, the trunk is incredibly roomy, and there's so much space on the inside of the vehicle. I would definitely buy a Malibu again! It's an exceptional value, especially for as little as $10,000.

This car has been a bit of a headache since day one, with the brakes and rotors needing to be replaced on five separate occasions (it now has 67,000 miles on it). Additionally, the water pump, blower fan, and turn signal switch have all needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, I have spent over $1500 out of pocket on all of these 'not normal wear and tear' malfunctions. I have found that GM's customer service is not very helpful. Overall, I would not recommend buying this car.

I've owned this car for 7 years and unfortunately, I've had nothing but problems with it. Despite only having 67,000 miles on it due to my limited driving for work and errands, I have had to do regular maintenance and rely heavily on my extended warranty to cover the costs. However, every time I take it to the dealership for repairs, the same issues seem to resurface a few weeks later. I have had to replace the manifold gasket, transmission, driver's side control panel, A/C control panel (3 times), fuel pump, a few fuel injectors, water pump, and other parts that I may have forgotten. Based on my experience, I have decided that I will never purchase a Chevy or GM vehicle again. I just wanted to share my experience with potential buyers so that they can make an informed decision. Thank you for listening.

Our 2000 Malibu was a poor investment. Despite our initial hopes for a good balance between price, performance, and quality, we were sorely disappointed. The engine required a replacement intake gasket, and the A/C system has been a constant headache, requiring monthly recharges and multiple part replacements. The overall cost of repairs has been significant. It is clear that this car does not meet our standards for quality and performance.

This car has required three visits to the dealer for brake repairs, despite my having paid $17K for what I hoped would be a reliable vehicle after my husband's passing. Unfortunately, I feel that I must now consider trading it, especially given that the resistor on the lower part of the A/C had to be replaced today.

Hey there! We call our Malibu LS the 'Malibu Surprise' because it always keeps us on our toes. Unfortunately, I was expecting more from an $18,500 car purchase. It has been a bit unreliable and costly to maintain. I've had to make 6 warranty calls, get a brake job, and now the electrical is out. Just wanted to share my experience and suggest considering other car options. Thanks for listening!
