1994 Pontiac Bonneville problems

pontiac logo

The Pontiac Bonneville is a model line of full-size or mid-size front-engine rear drive cars manufactured and marketed by Pontiac from 1957 until 2005, with a hiatus for model years 1982-1986.

The Bonneville (marketed as the Parisienne in Canada until 1981), and its platform partner, the Grand Ville, are some of the largest Pontiacs ever built; in station wagon body styles they reached just over 230 inches (5.8 m) long, and at 5,000 pounds (2,300 kg) and more were also some of the heaviest cars produced at the time.

The Bonneville nameplate was introduced as a limited production performance convertible during the 1957 model year, its name taken from the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah — an early site of US auto racing and numerous world's land speed record records, itself named after U.S. Army officer Benjamin Bonneville.

Common 1994 Pontiac Bonneville problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 1994 Pontiac Bonneville, several common problems have been identified:

  • Power Steering and Gas Pedal Issues: Another common complaint involves the power steering going out while driving, accompanied by a lack of response from the gas pedal. This could be indicative of a broken fan belt, which may affect the power steering system. Checking the fan belt and related components could help diagnose and resolve this issue.
  • Stalling at Different RPMs: Some owners have experienced stalling at various engine speeds, with the car starting back up without any issues. This problem could be related to issues with fuel delivery, ignition components like the ignition coil packs, or the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). Proper diagnosis of these components is crucial to address the stalling problem effectively.

These common problems with the 1994 Pontiac Bonneville can be frustrating for owners and may require thorough diagnostic procedures to pinpoint the exact cause of each issue. Addressing these problems promptly and accurately is essential to ensure the smooth operation and reliability of the vehicle.

  • VIN: 1G2HX52L3R4
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: DT: THE CONTACT OWNS A 1994 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE. THE ENGINE FELL OUT OF THE VEHICLE IN JUNE OF 2005 WHILE SLOWLY PULLING OUT FROM A STOP LIGHT. HE HEARD A LOUD CLUNK AND LOST STEERING CONTROL AND THE CAR DRIFTED TO THE CURB AND STOPPED. THE GM MANUFACTURER WANTED TO KNOW HOW THE VEHICLE WAS MAINTAINED. WHEN THE MANUFACTURER FOUND OUT THAT THEY DONE ALMOST ALL THE MAINTENANCE THEY TOLD HER THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TEN YEARS OLD. SHE UNDERSTOOD THIS, BUT SHE STILL FELT THAT AN ENGINE SHOULD NOT JUST FALL OUT OF A VEHICLE. HER PRIMARY CONCERN WAS TO MAKE NHTSA AND THE MANUFACTURER AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE IF DRIVING AT A HIGH SPEED AND THIS HAPPENED THEN YOU WOULD LOSE ALL STEERING CAPABILITIES . THIS WAS A SAFETY ISSUE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT A REPAIR SHOP AND THE REPAIR SHOP TOLD HER THAT THEY HAD A FORD TAURUS THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO, ANOTHER DEALERSHIP TOLD HER THAT THEY HAD A DODGE INTREPID WITH THE SAME PROBLEM . THERE IS A FRAME THAT HOLDS THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION TO THE BODY OF THE CAR. THERE IS A LARGE THREE INCH DIAMETER WASHER THAT IS UNDER A METRIC .5 INCH DIAMETER BOLT. THE BOLT DID NOT FAIL, BUT THE WASHER DID FAIL. THERE ARE FOUR BOLTS IN THE REAR AND TWO BOLTS IN THE FRONT, AND THE TWO IN THE FRONT WERE OKAY, BUT THE FOUR IN THE REAR BROKE AWAY AND FAILED. THE GM BUSHING PART NUMBER IS 25536051 FOR THE FRONT TWO BOLTS.*AK UPDATED 01/19/06. *JB

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-11-24
  • VIN: 1G2HZ52L4R4
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW. WITHIN 6MO THE FIRST ALTERNATOR PROBLEM OCCURRED. IN THE PAST 8YEARS I HAVE HAD 10 ALTERNATORS AND 4 BATTERIES PUT IN THE VEHICLE. EVERYTIME THE BATTERY GUAGE WOULD GO LOW WHEN CHECKED I WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE ALTERNATOR. ON ONE OCCASSION I TOOK MY CAR DUE TO THE FACT THE DEALER WAS CLOSED, TO ANOTHER CAR REPAIR SHOP WHO REPLACED THE BATTERY BUT STATED THERE IS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND UNTIL THAT IS FIXED I WILL STILL HAVE ALTERNATOR/ BATTERY PROBLEMS. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE SITUATION WITH THE DEALERTO NO SATISFACTION. INITIALLY THE CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY SO THE DEALER REPLACED PARTS. THEN THE EXTENDED WARRANTY I PURCHASED KICKED IN, AGAIN PAYING FOR PARTS. WHEN THE WARRANTYEXPIRED I HAD GREAT EXPENSE PAYING FOR PARTS AND LABOR. I ALSO LOST USE OF MY VEHICLE AND HAD TO FIND ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION. I CALLED GM CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY NEVER GOT BACK TO ME . AFTER SEVERAL CALLS AND PHONE CONVERSATIONS WITH SEVERAL PEOPLE GM STATED I SHOULD GO BACK TO THE DEALER IT WAS A DEALER PROBLEM. WHEN I TALKED TO THE DEALER AND SERVICE MANAGER THEY SAID IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM. THAT IT IS A DESIGN PROBLEM AND THAT THE CAR DRAWS A LOT OF ELECTRIC AL POWER. THEY COULD ONLY RECOMEND PUTTING IN A NEW WIRING SYSTEM ROUGH COST 3,000 BUT COULD NOT TELL ME THIS WOULD RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. I KNOW MY CAR IS NOW 8 YEARS OLD. I HAVE ALL THE REPAIR BILLS SHOWING NINE GOING ON TEN ALTERNATORS. THE PROBLEM IS ON GOING AND I WAS TOLD YESTERDAY I NEED ANOTHER ALTERNATOR. THE DEALER'S ONLY SUGGESTION TO ME AS A CONSUMER IS THAT THEY COULD SELL ME ANOTHER CAR. WHY WOULD I BUY ANOTHER CAR FROM THEM IF THEY SOLD ME A PREVIOUS CAR WITH ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND WON'T HELP ME FIX THEM. I AM AT A LOSS. MY CAR DOESN'T FALL UNDER LEMON LAW ALTHOUGH 9 SOON TO BE 10 ALTERNATORS TO ME QUALIFIES AS A LEMON. BECAUSE THE CAR IS OLDER THAT IS THE EXCUSE I AM GIVEN. CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

I HAD JUST MOVED TO NH AND CALLED TH ELOCAL DEALER.....FAIRFIELD IN KEENE. THEY CAME OUT AND FLATBEDDED THE CAR TO THE SHOP. 4 WEEKS LATER AFTER THEY LOCATED THE PARTS I WAS TOLD THAT THE COLLAR THAT HOLDS THE STEERING COLUMN HAD BROKE AND THAT THIS SHOULD NEVER HAD HAPPENED UNLESS I WAS IN A HEAD ON COLLISION AND THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT A HIGHER SPEED. GM SAID IT WAS THE RESPONIBILITY OF ME TO PROVE IT WAS A DEFECTIVE PART. I BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD INVESTIGATE IT. I SPOKE TO THE ESIS ..GREG THRASHER.. ON 7/24/2002. PHONE 1-800-888-0164. WHO TOLD ME IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE TO TELL IF THE PART WAS EVER DEFECTIVE. Negative 1994 Pontiac Bonneville car reviews

  1. Cade Roberts 2024-08-20

I recently purchased this car brand new. While American cars may not have the best reputation for longevity, I personally prefer to drive a Honda or Toyota due to their unique features. Unfortunately, my car has experienced some issues such as a broken driver's side motor and blown speakers, as well as some cosmetic issues like creaking doors and a malfunctioning passenger lock. Despite these setbacks, I still appreciate the car's appearance and overall performance. Although the car's value has decreased significantly over the past 10 years, I expected this to happen. While I have a soft spot for classic cars like the LTD's and Continentals, I still enjoy driving my current car.

  2. Nils O'Reilly 2024-07-14

Love the 3800 series v6 in this car... Very fast. Strong runner.... I just had the unfortunate of electric problems.... Went through 3 batteries in the 5 months I had it. New alternator, new starter, cylinoids were fine, and still drained battery and starter barley ever tried.... If starter work started every time, best motor in any production car at that price. Oh and did I mention my brakes went completely out 8 times in the 5 months I had it?

Hello! I recently bought my Bonnyville from a private owner with only 40,000 miles and the interior & exterior are still beautiful. However, since my purchase, I have had to replace virtually every part on the car. Unfortunately, it has not been a great experience. It now has 94,000 miles and just when I thought there was nothing left to replace, there is a crunching sound in the front end whenever I make a turn. I'm not sure what to do now. I would sell it, but I know they don't have much value anymore. Any suggestions?

  1. Gunner Romaguera 2025-01-03

We bought the Bonneville to be used as our family car and it has been a great choice. I'm so happy with the gas mileage and overall comfort of this vehicle. After 9 years, it still drives like the day we purchased it. I have no complaints so far.

  2. Ignatius Lebsack 2024-11-09

Your '93 has passed the 170,000 mark and is still going strong. It's great to hear that it has had the usual maintenance, plus alternator, battery, etc, but nothing has been replaced twice and nothing out of the ordinary. This car drives great and has plenty of room for your family.

  3. Gayle Prosacco 2024-10-27

Out of the few cars I've driven, I'm so glad that this was my first car. It has great handling, good gas mileage, and good pick up. I absolutely love it!

  4. Nicola Beier 2024-10-09

You bought the car when it was 4 years old with 62k miles and it seems like you may have paid a little more than you should have (the dealer sold it to you for $8600). You drove it to work daily, covering a 100-mile round trip, and it proved to be very reliable. Of course, you had to replace the alternator, but that was covered by the lifetime warranty which you bought the first time, unlike the second time. After 2 and a half years, you sold it to your 16-year-old son, who got a great deal! It has been a very safe and reliable starter car for him, especially with the traction control and ABS which are essential in Ohio snow. The CD/stereo replacement blew the speakers almost immediately, and the drivers inside door panel is failing. The passenger window is clicking, and the cup holders and console door latch broke (but you used velcro, which is better than new!). The boys have been rough on it, but overall, it has been a good car.

  5. Harmon Torp 2024-10-03

I love this car! It was a gift from my Dad back in 2003 when it had 107K miles. Since then, I've had no problems with it and it always starts right up. I make sure to get the oil changed regularly. Even though it's 2009 now, I don't drive that much and it currently has 137K miles.
