2010 Ford Escape hybrid problems
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since the 2001 model year. The first Ford SUV derived from a car platform, the Escape fell below the Ford Explorer in size; the Escape is currently sized between the Ford EcoSport and Ford Edge. The 2004 Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid-electric vehicle from Ford, and the first hybrid produced as an SUV.
The first two generations of the Escape used the Ford CD2 platform (jointly developed with Mazda), leading to the release of the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner; as with the Escape, both the Tribute and Mariner were marketed in North America. In Europe, the Escape was initially branded as the Ford Maverick from 2001 to 2008 (replacing a Nissan-produced SUV).
Under the mid-2000s "One Ford" globalization strategy, the third and fourth-generation designs of the Escape have been unified with the Ford Kuga, designed by Ford of Europe. Sharing a common body and chassis underpinnings (and several engines), the Escape and Kuga are manufactured in their home markets. As with previous generations, the fourth-generation Escape is offered with gasoline, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid options. Outside of North America, the Ford Escape is marketed in Australia, China, and Taiwan.

Common 2010 Ford Escape hybrid problems
The 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid is a compact crossover SUV that offers the convenience of a larger vehicle while delivering the frugality of a smaller one. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of issues. Here are the common problems with the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid based on complaints from owners:
- Check Engine Light and Hesitation or Stumbling While Driving: Some owners have reported that the check engine light comes on and the vehicle hesitates or stumbles while driving. This issue may be caused by faulty fuel injectors or a clogged fuel filter, which may need to be replaced.
- Internal Transfer Case Problem on the 4WD models: Some owners of the 4WD models have reported issues with the internal transfer case, which can result in a loss of power to the front wheels. This issue may be caused by a faulty transfer case or a damaged drive chain, which may need to be replaced.
- Fuel Efficiency: While the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid is known for its fuel efficiency, some owners have reported that it does not meet the EPA estimates. However, other owners have reported that they consistently get over 30 mpg both highway and city driving.
- Rear Seat Leg Room: Some owners have reported that the rear seat leg room is limited, which can be uncomfortable for taller passengers. This issue may be addressed by moving the seat back, but this may reduce cargo space.
- Shiny Black Trim on the Console: Some owners have reported that the shiny black trim on the console is a dust and fingerprint collector, which can be difficult to clean. This issue may be addressed by using a microfiber cloth and a cleaning solution specifically designed for the material.
- Lack of Convenient Place for Rear Seat Headrests: Some owners have reported that there is no convenient place to put the rear seat headrests when they are not in use, which can be inconvenient when folding down the rear seats. This issue may be addressed by storing the headrests in the trunk or in the back seat when not in use.
- Rear Seat Fold-Down Levers: Some owners have reported that the rear seat fold-down levers are not located by the back hatch, which can make it difficult to fold down the rear seats. This issue may be addressed by locating the levers in a more convenient location.
- Engine Leaks: Some owners have reported that the engine leaks oil, which can be a sign of a more serious issue. This issue may be caused by a faulty oil pan gasket or a damaged timing chain cover, which may need to be replaced.
- Fuel System Pressure: Some owners have reported that the fuel system does not maintain its pressure, which can result in a loss of power or a decrease in fuel efficiency. This issue may be caused by a faulty fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter, which may need to be replaced.
- Passing California Smogging: Some owners have reported that the vehicle caused problems passing California Smogging, which can be a sign of a more serious issue. This issue may be caused by a faulty catalytic converter or a damaged oxygen sensor, which may need to be replaced.
In summary, the 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid is a reliable and fuel-efficient vehicle that has some common issues, such as ignition misfires, check engine light, internal transfer case problems, fuel efficiency, rear seat leg room, shiny black trim on the console, lack of convenient place for rear seat headrests, rear seat fold-down levers, engine leaks, fuel system pressure, and passing California Smogging. Owners should be aware of these issues and address them promptly to ensure the longevity and safety of the vehicle.

This car is very nice. Living in the hilly Pacific Northwest, the flawless AWD makes the ride feel easy. Excellent fuel economy and parallel park assist just add to the list. I have rear-ended four cars last year, but with this tool, I have yet to do any damage.

I have only had my Ford Escape Hybrid for two weeks but I already absolutely love it! It's incredibly fun to drive, has excellent mileage, and is a very good-looking SUV that's not too big. The options are just great, and I got the Limited version with all the upgrades. This is my first SUV, first Ford, and first Hybrid, and I couldn't be happier so far. I'm proud to own an American car that was clearly designed to provide great quality across the board.
-
1,000 miles and I'm very pleased with the vehicle. I'm getting an honest 32mpg with mixed hwy/city driving, which is great for an AWD vehicle. The vehicle has excellent regular performance when needed.
-
I just traded in a 4WD 07 escape hybrid for a 4WD 09 hybrid--what a huge difference--the driving experience, quality and comfort much improved. The vehicle has become a class act rather than a noisy bare bones 4X4. Other improvements include a much better tuned switch from gas to electric and the mileage is better (31 average in mixed driving and it is not yet broken in).
-
I absolutely love my vehicle! It has the best combination of fuel efficiency, utility, and environmental impact of any vehicle made in the USA. I am so proud to drive it and even happier to own it. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and the 'Limited' model comes with all the features I need. The design is simply great!

Although there have been several issues with my car, I am confident in its overall performance. These issues include: 1. Steering locking up while driving, which was resolved with a replacement under warranty. 2. A rear window leak, which was also addressed. 3. Missing wiring for the heated mirror, which was fixed. 4. A busted A/C blend actuator within a year, which was promptly repaired. 5. Brakes and rotors needing replacement at 30k, despite the car's regenerative braking system. 6. A jerky transition to mechanical brakes in rainy weather and too loose a transition in hot/dry weather. 7. A grinding/rubbing noise when turning sharp left that has yet to be resolved. Despite these issues, I remain confident in the overall quality of my car.
Valentin Treutel 2024-05-26
I've had the car for almost three years and while I'm disappointed with the mileage numbers, I still appreciate its features. During colder weather, the MPG drops to 14 or 15, which is similar to what some of my friends with Toyota Priuses have experienced. Even in normal temperatures and highway driving, the best mileage I've ever gotten out of the car is 27 MPG. Looking back, I might have preferred a non-hybrid car that would have cost me less. Overall, I still enjoy driving my car and appreciate its unique features.
Silas Thiel 2024-02-16
The air conditioning evaporator is leaking, despite the car only having 58,000 miles. However, I am confident in the repair being done, despite the high cost.
Sterling Kutch 2024-02-07
The car had only 2,500 miles on it and was being driven in hot weather conditions with the a/c on, making frequent stops and starts. At times, the gas engine would kick in. Suddenly, the car shut down and the tracking light went on, leaving the driver stranded with no power. After waiting for 30 minutes, the car started again and was taken to Haggerty Ford. Despite finding no error codes or issues, the dealer suggested that the vents in the back may have been blocked, but upon inspection, they were not. Unfortunately, the same thing happened again 1,500 miles later under the same conditions. The driver is taking the car to the Ford dealer again and is wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. Despite these setbacks, we remain committed to finding a solution and restoring confidence in this car.
