2006 Chevrolet Aveo problems
The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.
The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Common 2006 Chevrolet Aveo problems
The Chevrolet Aveo, produced between 2004 and 2011, has been known to have several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission.
Engine Problems:
- Idler Pulley Breakage: The 2005 model of the Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have idler pulley breakage issues. This problem is the third most reported issue in the 2005 model, with an average cost to fix of $1,500 and an average mileage of 65,000 miles. The idler pulley is a part of the engine's accessory drive belt system, and its failure can cause the belt to slip or break, leading to engine damage.
- Engine Failure: The 2007 model of the Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have engine failure issues. This problem is the fourth most reported issue in the 2007 model, with an average cost to fix of $4,000 and an average mileage of 65,000 miles. Engine failure can be caused by several factors, including wear and tear, lack of maintenance, or manufacturing defects.
- Engine Stalls/Dies While Driving: The 2007 model of the Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have engine stalls/dies while driving issues. This problem is the fifth most reported issue in the 2007 model, with an average cost to fix of $1,500 and an average mileage of 65,000 miles. Engine stalls can be caused by several factors, including fuel system problems, electrical issues, or engine mechanical problems.
Transmission Problems:
- Hard Shifting: The Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have hard shifting issues, particularly between gears 1 and 2, or 3 and 2. This problem can be caused by several factors, including worn-out clutch components, hydraulic system problems, or transmission control module issues.
Other Common Problems:
- Faulty Turn Signal Switch: The 2004-2009 and 2011 models of the Chevrolet Aveo have been reported to have faulty turn signal switch issues. This problem can cause the turn signals to stay on or off instead of blinking like they are supposed to.
- Faulty Ignition Coils: The Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have faulty ignition coils issues. This problem can cause the engine to misfire, stall, or have difficulty starting.
- Failing Ignition Coils: The Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have failing ignition coils issues. This problem can cause the engine to misfire, stall, or have difficulty starting.
- Broken Idler Pulley: The Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have broken idler pulley issues. This problem can cause the engine to overheat, stall, or have difficulty starting.
- Faulty Timing Belt: The Chevrolet Aveo has been reported to have faulty timing belt issues. This problem can cause the engine to misfire, stall, or have difficulty starting.
In conclusion, the Chevrolet Aveo has several common problems, primarily related to the engine and transmission. These problems can lead to expensive repairs and decreased vehicle reliability. It is essential to regularly check the engine's parts for wear and damage to prevent these issues from occurring.

Is Chevrolet Aveo 2007 a good car?
Subcompact cars have a well-deserved reputation for poor handling and wobbly rides. While the Chevrolet Aveo is certainly no thrill ride, it provides respectable vehicle dynamics. The steering is direct, the suspension well tuned and the engine -- while loud and buzzy -- is adequate for day-to-day commuting.
How safe is a Chevy Aveo?
The Aveo scored maximum points in the side barrier test, all body regions being well protected. Even in the more severe pole test, the chest was adequately protected. The seat and head restraint provided good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision.

I'm so glad I bought my special value Aveo for under $7000 brand new! It's been such a great deal, and I'm consistently getting 35-37 mpg every tankful in mixed driving with ~ 2200 miles on it so far. I can't wait for it to get fully broken in! Back in 1995, I paid $12000 for a Toyota Tercel, but it didn't have the power or room that the Aveo does, even though it did get 40 mpg. That means I paid just over half of what the Tercel cost me 10 years ago. What's not to love?
-
I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Aveo. I bought it when I moved from Kansas City to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and I've been driving it every day since. Honestly, I have no complaints about the car. The price was just right for me at the time and I never had to worry about the car not starting or anything like that. It may not be the fastest car on the road, but then again, you won't be paying for all the gas that the faster ones do. All in all, it's a great car and I'd recommend it to anyone. Take care!
-
The automatic transmission shifts really slow when cold. Other than that, I love it. It runs well and gets great gas mileage. I would definitely buy another one.
-
I've only had my car for about a month and I must say, it's been pretty nice to have! Although my gas mileage is only about 22mpg with the auto, I have to admit that I drive kinda crazy. Other than that, the car is absolutely great. The driving position is fantastic and I feel like I'm in a mini SUV. While the radio could go a little louder, it has lots of amenities. Although it's a little underpowered, all in all, it's a great car for the money. I think the Aveo is like an inexpensive Beetle - it's colorful, cute, shapely, and it has personality!
-
I really like my Aveo! I bought it specifically for its fuel economy and have been pleasantly surprised with the results. I've checked the mileage three times now, with a mix of city and highway driving, and even with the air conditioning on all the time, I've consistently gotten 34+ miles per gallon. It's also quite comfortable and economical overall. I'm very pleased with my purchase!

The Aveo's ride can be punishing on large potholes, and body rolls are extreme in all corners, making handling imprecise. The clutch is too light, and the gearbox is rudimentary, making smooth shifts extremely difficult. While acceleration is adequate on flat hills, low torque makes uphill acceleration a chore. Unfortunately, reliability is also a problem, as my vehicle had a warped throttle body, and the thermostat housing is made of plastic - a design flaw that has since been corrected with metal replacements. Additionally, rubber bushings up front have compressed and made the car wallow even more than normal, and tire wear on the stock tires is poor, with mine reaching 19,000 miles. Overall, this car has been a joyless and unreliable experience, and it's difficult to see its purpose.
Gianni Considine 2024-09-05
Sorry to hear about your experience with the Aveo. It sounds like you've had a lot of issues with it, from the alternator to the CD player and the key mechanism. It's frustrating when things don't work as they should, especially when you've just bought a new car. I hope you've been able to find some solutions to these problems. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Leopoldo Wuckert 2024-09-01
The car has had multiple issues since I purchased it, including transmission, wiring, and engine problems. Despite some challenges, I have been persistent in getting these issues resolved. For example, it took multiple visits to identify a bad throttle body that had been causing issues for 2.5 years. While there are still some ongoing wiring issues, I am confident that they will be resolved soon. I want to caution potential buyers to carefully consider their options before purchasing an Aveo.
Janick Ernser 2024-06-06
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my '06 Aveo that I purchased in mid-October '05. My main objective was to minimize fuel costs, but unfortunately, I've been a bit disappointed with the gas mileage. I'm only getting an average of 19-20 MPG, which is 6 miles less per gallon than my Grand Prix. I know I overpaid for this car at $13,000+, but I'm sure I could have done better. Thanks for listening!
Jamey O'Connell 2024-04-23
I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the 05 Aveo that I purchased in July. Overall, I think it's a decent car, but I have noticed that the gas mileage isn't quite as good as some people have claimed. With the automatic transmission, I only get around 23mpg in the city. Additionally, I've had a couple of issues with the car, such as the headlights going out after just 2 months and the suspension needing to be tightened every so often. However, considering the price of the car, I still think it's a great value, especially if you're planning on keeping it for a long time.
