The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.

The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.

Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

Is the Chevy Aveo a reliable car?

RepairPal gave the Aveo an above-average 4.0 out of 5.0 rating, ranking it 13th out of 21 subcompact cars. According to reports, this car can last over 200,000 miles as long as you take good care of it.

  • Summary: There was no prior warnings or notices that there was an issue. While diving on a major road with my children, smoke started coming into the cabin from the vents, and around the stereo. Luckily I was near a very vacant parking lot and immediately pulled over. I removed the kids from the car safely and did open the hood to try troubleshoot the problem. There was no smoke anywhere under the hood. Immediately after, sparks started falling from under the steering wheel to the gas pedal. Immediately after that the car was engulfed in flames. The car is currently located at my local police impound and is available for inspection upon request. From the time the smoke started to when the car was engulfed, it was approximately 5 minutes. This could have been dangerous had we been on a highway and unable to pull over and get out of the car safely within that time. It was only inspected briefly by the fire department who arrived to put out the fire and they reported it was an electrical issue that caused the fire.

Latest negative Chevrolet Aveo car reviews

  1. Miguel Ferry 2025-02-21

    Vehicle year: 2010

I purchased this car brand new in 2009. I used to buy Toyotas, but I decided to give Chevy a chance. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a big mistake. Currently, I am dealing with issues covered under the lemon law, as the engine keeps misfiring. Although Chevy offered to compensate me for my problems, they were unable to provide me with a 2-year extended warranty. Instead, they offered me free maintenance for a year. While I appreciate the gesture, it falls short of my expectations. I am disappointed with Chevy's customer service and once this car is paid off, I will be returning to Toyota.

  2. Rickie Smitham 2025-02-17

    Vehicle year: 2005

Hi there! I'm currently going through all the previous posts and I'm amazed at how many problems people are having. I wanted to share my experience with my car - as of July 1, 2009, I've driven 80,000 miles on it and it will be four years old in October. I did have some trouble with the original tires, but I replaced them at around 20,000 miles with Toyo's and they've been wearing great. I think I can get around 75,000 miles on them! Other than that, I make sure to get an oil change every 5,000 miles and rotate my tires every 10,000 miles. My goal was to get 100,000 miles on it within five years, and I'm well on my way. In terms of gas mileage, I travel 85 miles per day and I've been getting 34-37 MPG. Let me know if you have any questions!

  3. Jesus Herzog 2025-02-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I bought it at 57000 miles and unfortunately, the timing belt broke at 79000. It seems that timing belts in this car have a tendency to cause some damage to the engine. The repair costs were quite high, ranging from $1500-2200. On top of that, I had to do some other repairs that should have been covered by annual maintenance, such as replacing the air intake and fixing some other cheaply made parts. All in all, the repair costs for this car have been quite high and almost outweighed the cost of the car itself. On a lighter note, it did take me a week to find the cupholder, but once I did, it was smooth sailing from there. Thanks for listening!

  4. Douglas Erdman 2025-02-14

    Vehicle year: 2010

I've owned my car for three years now and unfortunately, I've had to spend close to $4000 on repairs. It seems like it's constantly breaking down and I've had to replace just about everything on it, despite it only having one previous owner. While it does have good gas mileage, it's a 2010 model with roll down windows and no electronic locks, which may not be ideal for some people. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car to others. However, I'm excited to be getting a new vehicle soon! I did have some trouble with the previous car as I owed more than it was worth, but I'm looking forward to a fresh start.

  5. Mack Satterfield 2025-02-12

    Vehicle year: 2005

I purchased a used 2005 Aveo automatic in 2007 with approximately 25k miles on it to replace my Toyota Echo. Although it runs well (and the mpg is nice), it does have large blindspots in the front corners, so it's important to watch for pedestrians while turning. Additionally, it is lightweight, which can cause it to be blown around on the highway. Unfortunately, in 2009 with 45k miles, while replacing the tires, I discovered a bent inner tie rod, which required replacing the entire chassis ($700-900). This issue caused the front tires to wear out faster and the car to wobble between 50-65 mph. At 62k miles, the clock stopped working, and after only 64k miles and regular maintenance, the engine died. It would have been better to replace the timing belt before 60k miles, but unfortunately, it wouldn't have been worth it in the end. Overall, it was a disappointing experience.

    Vehicle year: 2006

I bought my Aveo back in 2013 with 63,000 miles on it and have now had it for six years. I live in a rural area and 95% of my driving is not stop and go. I followed the maintenance schedule and have had zero issues. Now, with 350,000 miles on her, the only thing I have replaced is the brakes. I have the four-door LS model with a hatchback and I am happy to report that she is doing just fine. I had to replace my little lady's suspension, but everything else is great. Don't hesitate to purchase this little auto that could. You will easily get your money's worth, even if it has 250,000 miles on it! It will run for you up to another 50,000 miles, no problem. Simply follow the book as far as maintenance and you will have no problems. Now, with 355,000 miles and still running strong, it still burns no oil. I did have to replace the crankcase cover, and that's it. The shocks are still original, and the stick shift console is not working, but it's still a great little car. Buy one, you will not be disappointed. It averages 33 mpg. I plan to buy another one when my little white auto hits 400,000. Try and find something with less mileage, say, 225,000, and start all over again. Have a great 2023, mates!

  2. Henri Keeling 2025-02-14

I'm so happy with this car! I have the 1LT with Black Metallic paint, XM Radio, rear spoiler, driver convenience package, driver information center, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, and automatic transmission. The car is extremely quiet both inside and out. All the doors shut with a luxury sound (unlike the tin can sound on other economy cars). Fuel mileage is great - I average 36-40 MPG @ 68 MPH on the highway depending on wind direction/terrain. In the city, the average is more like 29 MPG. Visibility out of all windows is great. For me, there are no blind spots. With OnStar and a superb warranty (100K powertrain), you can't go wrong!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading your review of the 2006 Aveo HB LS. It sounds like you've had a great experience with it over the past 11 years! It's always nice to hear about a car that has stood the test of time. I completely agree that maintenance is key to keeping any car running smoothly, and it's great to hear that this car has held up so well. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

I love my 5 spd hatchback! It has over 56,000 miles on it and I have never had any problems with it. The ride is very smooth and controlled, and it turns on a dime with an 18 ft turning circle. The lifetime average MPG is 34.7, with the top being 44 and the lowest being 27. In the last 6 months, the overall average is 38.9 MPG. I can't believe the value I got with this purchase. The engine just purrs and the ride is quiet at 60-65 cruise speed (but I've been keeping it at 55 lately for better MPG). The acceleration is adequate for all my needs. I would buy another without question. The fit and finish is superb and the seat is comfortable for long drives. There is also plenty of room for backseat passengers.

This is only my third vehicle, all of which have been Chevys, and I have never had a problem with any of them. I put 62,000 miles on this car in just 54 weeks and only had to change the tires at 45,000 miles. I have been pleasantly surprised by how well it drives. Due to financial problems, I had to sell my three Mercedes - an SL55, S55, CL55 - and a 2007 Corvette. Despite coming from such high-end vehicles, I found the performance and seats of this Chevy to be just as good. I was also impressed that I only had to change the oil once and never had to take it in for normal service. The oil level never went down, even after long quick trips. I got great mileage, averaging 27-29.5 mpg at 85 mph. However, I did notice that the wind can push this car around quite easily, which occasionally caused the steering wheel to be knocked out of my hand. The brakes also squeaked a lot in the morning.
