Chevrolet Aveo problems

The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.
The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.
Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

- Summary: There was no prior warnings or notices that there was an issue. While diving on a major road with my children, smoke started coming into the cabin from the vents, and around the stereo. Luckily I was near a very vacant parking lot and immediately pulled over. I removed the kids from the car safely and did open the hood to try troubleshoot the problem. There was no smoke anywhere under the hood. Immediately after, sparks started falling from under the steering wheel to the gas pedal. Immediately after that the car was engulfed in flames. The car is currently located at my local police impound and is available for inspection upon request. From the time the smoke started to when the car was engulfed, it was approximately 5 minutes. This could have been dangerous had we been on a highway and unable to pull over and get out of the car safely within that time. It was only inspected briefly by the fire department who arrived to put out the fire and they reported it was an electrical issue that caused the fire.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2nd Aveo hatchback. I had a 2004 model before, which was the automatic version. Although it was a great car, I realized that I could have gotten more out of it if I had opted for the 5-speed. Unfortunately, I only had it for a year before trading it in for a Honda Element, which I regretted from day one. Last year, I decided to give the Aveo another chance and purchased a brand new Aveo5 LS 5-speed for a great price of $12,000 out-the-door. It even came equipped with factory cruise control and pinstripes! I've put almost 25,000 miles on it and it's still running great. I'm getting an honest 35 MPG without the air on and 32 with the air on. The only minor issues I've had were covered by warranty. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the Aveo to anyone looking for a reliable and fuel-efficient car!

You have a great car! It's impressive that you've consistently gotten 32 MPG and even up to 35 MPG on road trips. It's clear that you take good care of it by keeping up with the recommended services. The 4 cyl engine provides a lot of pep and it's great to hear that it's comfortable to drive. It's also impressive that you've only needed to replace the tires twice in 2.6 years with 67,800 miles on the odometer. It sounds like you have a reliable car that you plan to keep for a while!

I recently purchased a used Aveo 5 with a 5-speed transmission. Previously, I had bought a new intro Aveo in 2004, but I was never quite satisfied with the mileage. Additionally, I found the shifter to be really mushy and it really needed an armrest. However, these issues have been resolved in the 2008 model. I am now able to get 37+ miles per gallon on the highway (at 70-75mph), whereas the old one would only get 33 if you babied it at <65mph. The shifter has been greatly improved, it now has an armrest, and the handling is much tighter. Although I gave up A/C to get a cheap purchase price, I haven't missed it so far. I am still concerned about the reported troublesome timing belt, but I plan on replacing it at 50K. All-in-all, I find the Aveo 5 to be perfect for my needs - it's inexpensive, fun to drive, and efficient.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2009 Aveo5 2LT that I purchased for my daughter about a month ago. Even though the car didn't have leatherette seats and a sunroof, it was still a great purchase. After driving SUVs for years, I had forgotten how much fun it is to drive a small car. We even drove it across the country from North Carolina to UCLA in California, which is a 2700-mile journey! I was a bit worried about my height (6 feet 3 inches with long legs), but the car was surprisingly comfortable, quiet, and had great handling. We even managed to travel 680 miles in a day without any issues. The best part? We got an overall 31 mpg on the trip, which is amazing considering how loaded the car was. We only spent $318 on gas for the entire trip! I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and fuel-efficient option.

We purchased the 4-speed automatic and it pulls great in the high hills. It also handles well and doesn't feel cramped, even for a big guy like me (250lbs+). I highly recommend it!

I've had my Aveo for almost 5 years now. When I first ran my fingers over the grill, some black paint powder came off on my finger, which wasn't a great start. However, I needed a vehicle that could handle my daily commute and the wear and tear that comes with it. Unfortunately, the wiper blades disintegrated within the first two months of ownership, which was frustrating. I know Korea doesn't have the same harsh winters as Canada, but still! I got new blades and moved on. But then, I started hearing a terrible noise coming from the engine. It turned out to be a wiring issue, which was a known problem for Aveo owners. When I contacted my dealer, they couldn't help me right away, so I had to go to a different mechanic. It was a hassle, but at least my car was fixed. I've also had to replace a few bulbs, but that's not a big deal. The worst experience was when I was driving to work one morning and hit a patch of snow. I'm a seasoned Canadian driver, but I still ended up scaring a lady in the opposite lane. Overall, I've had some ups and downs with my Aveo, but I'm still grateful for its reliability. After hitting the drifted snow on the side of the road, I realized yet another issue with the Aveo. The rear brake tends to lock, which can be quite terrifying. The pad came off the shoe inside the drum, which is not supposed to happen since they are molecularly bonded to prevent such incidents. Hey Rick, could you take a look at this rear brake? Something is definitely wrong. Oh, the drum is really stuck on there? I know, I scared the heck out of some lady in an SUV that was behind me. A couple of hours later, Rick said he had never even heard of this happening. I would strongly advise against buying this vehicle as it redefines cheap and has substandard parts. I am honestly confused about how this actually made it to market. Also, the screws to the air filter have corroded and I will likely have to cut them and tap them to change the air filter.

GM cannot figure out why they can't sell cars. Here is a pleasing, cool, practical contender in the Mini club but who's to know? It has a great gear box, precise steering feel, and is amazingly quiet with a compliant, controlled ride. Although the seat has little support (you sit on it, not in it) and the headrest is somewhat annoying and doesn't support the head comfortably, it is still a definite 'must drive' when considering Fit, Yaris, etc. Overall, it is a well-developed package for all-around use that puts a smile on your face.

Although there have been some issues with this car, I am confident in my assessment that it is not up to the standards that I expect from a Chevy. Despite having my tire pressure light looked at multiple times, the issue has not been resolved. Additionally, there have been problems with the air conditioning and the key hole in the driver's side door. It is important to thoroughly research and read reviews before making a purchase to ensure that you are getting a quality vehicle.

I had a Daewoo once and unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. It had a few issues such as the coil pack, coolant hoses bursting, thermostat, thermostat housing cracks, heater core blowing, and head gasket. It was a tough experience, but I learned from it. I think I'll try a Nissan next time. I bought it with 60k miles and now it's at 92k.

I purchased my 2005 Aveo LS brand new and it has been an excellent value. It has always been reliable and I have not had to make any major repairs, just routine maintenance such as oil changes and replacing wearable items like tires and brakes. At the time of purchase, it was the least expensive car on the market, but it still gets me from point A to point B. While it may not have any fancy bells or whistles, it does have air conditioning, although the horn and clock stopped working shortly after purchase. Despite these minor issues, I still have a functioning radio, although I have to keep the volume low due to a blown speaker. Overall, it's a great car for the price and has served me well.
