The Chevrolet Aveo (/əˈveɪ.oʊ/ ə-VAY-oh) is a five-passenger, front-drive subcompact car (B-segment) marketed by General Motors (GM) since 2002 over two generations. Originally developed by South Korean manufacturer Daewoo Motors and marketed as the Daewoo Kalos, the takeover of Daewoo by GM to form GM Daewoo Auto & Technology (GMDAT) resulted in the car's marketing in 120 countries under seven brands (Chevrolet, Daewoo, ZAZ, Holden, Pontiac, Ravon and Suzuki) — prominently as the Aveo.

The second-generation Aveo, developed by GM Korea (formerly GMDAT), was introduced in 2011 and was also marketed as the Chevrolet Sonic in markets including the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. Production of the second-generation model ended in October 2020.

Since 2017, GM marketed the Chinese market Chevrolet Sail sedan in Mexico and other Central American countries as the Aveo. Developed by GM PATAC in China and produced by joint venture SAIC-GM, it was positioned below the more advanced Sonic. In 2023, GM imported a new version to Mexico in a sedan and hatchback form, developed and manufactured by another Chinese joint venture, SAIC-GM-Wuling.

  • Summary: There was no prior warnings or notices that there was an issue. While diving on a major road with my children, smoke started coming into the cabin from the vents, and around the stereo. Luckily I was near a very vacant parking lot and immediately pulled over. I removed the kids from the car safely and did open the hood to try troubleshoot the problem. There was no smoke anywhere under the hood. Immediately after, sparks started falling from under the steering wheel to the gas pedal. Immediately after that the car was engulfed in flames. The car is currently located at my local police impound and is available for inspection upon request. From the time the smoke started to when the car was engulfed, it was approximately 5 minutes. This could have been dangerous had we been on a highway and unable to pull over and get out of the car safely within that time. It was only inspected briefly by the fire department who arrived to put out the fire and they reported it was an electrical issue that caused the fire.

Latest negative Chevrolet Aveo car reviews

  1. Elwyn Conn 2025-07-28

    Vehicle year: 2006

Chevy leads the way with the Aveo, but unfortunately, our experience with it has not been great. We have had to replace several parts in just two months, including the blower motor, fan speed relay, and clutch slave cylinder. Additionally, we experienced a short that drained the battery, which was quite inconvenient. Even in a slow 25 mph accident, the car did not hold up well and suffered significant damage. We would caution potential buyers to be aware of these issues. However, we understand that everyone's experience may differ, and we hope that others have a better experience with this car.

  2. Henderson Smith 2025-07-25

    Vehicle year: 2008

I was thrilled to purchase my very first brand new car! My husband had previously bought a 2004 Aveo that was getting an impressive 40 mpg, so I was excited to get my own 2008 model. However, I did encounter some issues with the tire gauge light from the first week of ownership. I was a bit disappointed that the dealership didn't check the tires before I picked up the car, but I understand that mistakes can happen. Unfortunately, I continued to experience problems with the tire light, which seemed to come on in both cold and warm weather. Despite several trips to the dealer, they were unable to find any issues. Additionally, I was disappointed that I couldn't get more than 24 mpg, despite trying different driving techniques. The dealer assured me that there was nothing wrong with the car, but I did have to replace the first set of tires (in both Aveos) before 6000 miles. Overall, I had some challenges with my car, but I still appreciate the convenience and independence that it provides.

  3. Mose Carroll 2025-07-25

    Vehicle year: 2011

I recently purchased a used car from a rental company with 38k miles. Unfortunately, the alternator went out right away, which was unexpected since the dealership claimed it should last until 150k miles. I learned the hard way that it's important to be careful where you take your car for repairs. Midas quoted me $600 for the part alone, which turned out to be inaccurate since the part was rare. Additionally, I've been disappointed with the gas mileage, which is much lower than advertised. Even though I drive mostly on the highway, my 2007 Kia Sportage got better gas mileage than this car. The acceleration is also a concern, as it doesn't respond quickly, making it scary to turn onto busy streets or merge onto freeways. The car seems to struggle with basic tasks and makes a lot of noises while the RPM jumps around. Overall, I've had some issues with this car, but I'm hopeful that with proper care and maintenance, it will improve.

  4. Elias Heller 2025-07-20

    Vehicle year: 2005

Passing vehicles on the highway was quite challenging due to the tachometer swinging wildly and the car getting stuck in low gear. This caused drivers behind us to give us annoyed looks. Additionally, the ABS of this car gave us problems when trying to slow down during an exit from the highway, which resulted in the car veering offroad into a collision. Furthermore, the car's small size made it difficult to handle in windy conditions. Despite some positive features such as head room and driver's seat, my old Toyota Corolla is much more reliable and handles the highway better.

  5. Sherwood Gleichner 2025-07-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

Hey there! Unfortunately, my car broke down at a light due to a broken timing belt, but I'm in the process of replacing the engine. Once it's up and running again, I'm looking to trade it for almost anything. Just a friendly reminder that it's important to replace the timing belt every 30,000 miles. It would be great if manufacturers could offer some sort of compensation and take responsibility for this issue. Thanks for listening!

Latest positive Chevrolet Aveo car reviews

  1. Barry Kertzmann 2025-08-04

    Vehicle year: 2010

The car has been great since I had the O2 sensor repaired. I changed the timing belt at 88k and found that copper spark plugs work best for her, as she doesn't like platinum. I have noticed that freeway travel at speeds above sixty can be a bit noisy.

  2. Pablo Jones 2025-07-28

    Vehicle year: 2006

I purchased this car during a time of high gas prices with the expectation of significant gas savings. However, I have only been able to achieve a maximum of 18mpg in the city, even when driving conservatively. Additionally, the gas mileage drops even further when driving for fun. Surprisingly, I was able to achieve better mileage in the truck that I traded in for this car. While the trim pieces fade quickly and the paint is easily scratched, the car is mechanically sound. Although the hatch release lever has broken multiple times, it was always fixed under warranty. Now that the warranty has expired, some minor issues are starting to arise, but nothing major yet. Despite these issues, the car is enjoyable to drive and it is easy to add unique options such as factory side molding, tint, aftermarket wheel covers, and graphics kits. Additionally, it is easy to park and has ample storage in the hatchback.

  3. Jocelyn Rogahn 2025-07-21

    Vehicle year: 2006

I bought my Aveo with only 12 miles on it back in 2006. I opted for the hatchback special value manual, which didn't come with power locks or windows. The only option I got was A/C, and it came with an AM/FM radio. Today, in October 2015, my Aveo has 180,000 miles on it. I thought it would be helpful to go over every repair I've had in the last 10 years. I've had the following repairs done, not including scheduled maintenance: spark plug wires/plugs with valve cover gasket (costing $225 at 80k miles). The wires opened up, causing arching at high RPMs, which resulted in a flashing check engine light. Also, there was oil on the plugs due to the valve cover gasket being bad. Both of these are common Aveo problems, and upgrading the wires/gasket solved the issue. I've never had the issue repeat. Upper radiator hose leak/vacuum hose repair (costing $80 at 100k miles). This was a standard coolant leak. The vacuum hose leak caused a rough idle and revving idle from 1500 RPM to 2500 RPM. I've never had this issue repeat. Splice pack repair (costing $135 at 120k miles). This is a common issue in the fuse box that causes only half of your lights to work. I've never had this issue repeat. Removal of the daytime running module (costing $45 at 130k miles). This was a recall, and I opted to remove the module because it could short out and cause a fire. Headlight electrical harness (costing $60 at 160k miles). The plastic connector failed, causing a short and no right headlight. Back hatch replacement (costing $120 at 160k miles). The rear hatch wouldn't open. Air intake hose replacement (costing $210 at 160k miles). The intake hose decomposed, opening up and causing a check engine light, poor MPG, and acceleration. Wiper arm springs failed (costing $120 at 170k miles). The wipers no longer laid flat against the windshield. My Aveo has never left me stranded or resulted in a repair costing over $500. I've never had any engine or transmission failures. My word of advice is to keep up with general maintenance. Timing belts, water pump, thermostat, and serpentine belt should be replaced every 50k miles. Timing belt failures in Aveos are common at around 60k miles and can destroy your engine if it fails. Use synthetic oil, as it helps with the valve tick noise, and get it changed every 5k miles. Replace the air filter every 45k miles and flush all fluids (coolant/transmission) every 75k miles.Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with your Aveo. It's great to hear that you've had a good experience with it overall. I would suggest upgrading your brakes to ceramic pads and a quality rotor for the front, and a common tire for better safety and performance. As for the shocks, struts, and springs, it's good to hear that you haven't had any issues yet, but it's always a good idea to keep an eye on them and replace them when necessary. It's also important to take care of your car with regular maintenance to ensure it lasts a long time. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

After months of searching online for my perfect car, I finally found it in an Aveo LS. The unique foreign look of the car caught my eye immediately. Once I looked past the appearance, I discovered many other features that attracted me to this car. Surprisingly, the most expensive model was priced at just over $13,000, and many features that are considered optional on other cars came standard on this one. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase of this vehicle and would not hesitate to buy another one if I had the funds.

Let's start by discussing what the 2011 Aveo is not. It's not a luxury car, nor is it a sports car. It's also not a hyper-mileage car that gets 40+ MPG. However, if you're looking for a good value for the price, then this car is for you. It's a reliable car that will get you from point A to point B in reasonable style, comfort, and with reasonable mileage for a good price. As of February 2016, I have driven 43,000 miles and owned the car for 4 1/2 years. I still use it primarily as a commuter car for home to work and weekend errands. I get an average of 28 MPG combined city/hwy, which can change based on a variety of factors including which type of fuel I use. Overall, the cost of ownership has been low. I have not paid for any maintenance other than standard, expected maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, and very recently, new tires). I had two minor issues (one with wiring and one with the cabin fan), but these were both covered under the original 3 year/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, and I had them fixed before the 3 year mark, so no cost to me. If you're considering this car as a used purchase, you likely wouldn't have that warranty, but I still think the overall cost of ownership is fairly low. In general, I'm happy with my purchase, and I'm sure you will be too if you're looking for a reliable car that won't break the bank. The decision to trade in or hold on to the car after 60,000+ miles is up to you.According to Chevy's recommended maintenance, I estimate that I will spend around $1,300 - $1,800 on maintenance between 40K and 60K miles. This includes the cost of replacing the timing belt, brake pads, filters, plugs & wires, and a few other small things, but does not include basic oil changes and tire rotations. I believe this is a reasonable estimate. I had the car evaluated at CarMax and they offered to purchase it for $6,000, which is not bad, but not great either. I could probably sell it for $7,000 in a private sale, so I rated the resale value as
