The Volkswagen Taos is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen. It was first released in October 2018 as the Volkswagen Tharu in China, while the Taos was released in October 2020 as a restyled version of the Tharu for the North American, South American, and Russian markets. In the brand's lineup, the vehicle is positioned below the Tiguan, and in South America and China above the T-Cross. It is not marketed in core European market.

The Taos is named after Taos, New Mexico. The Tharu name is derived after the eponymous Tharu people, an ethnic group indigenous to Nepal and Northern India.

Overview

The Taos/Tharu is based on the Volkswagen Group MQB A1, with its platform closely related and several sheet metals shared with the SEAT Ateca, Škoda Karoq and the Jetta VS5. Known as the 'Project Tarek' during development, the Taos/Tharu is considered the first Chinese-developed VW product that is sold outside China. Volkswagen's brand sales chief Jürgen Stackmann said the project "turned from a regional project into a global project." Global annual sales for the vehicle were projected at 400,000 units.

Common 2022 Volkswagen Taos problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2022 Volkswagen Taos, several common problems have been reported:

  • Uneven Acceleration: Owners have highlighted uneven acceleration in the Taos, noting that the car tends to jump when accelerating from a standstill, making it challenging to achieve a smooth acceleration. This inconsistency in acceleration can impact the driving experience and overall satisfaction with the vehicle.
  • Quality of Interior Materials: Complaints have been raised regarding the interior design and material quality of the Taos. Owners have expressed dissatisfaction with the cheaply designed interior, low-quality materials, and dashboard squeaking when driving on uneven roads. These issues detract from the overall comfort and perceived value of the vehicle.
  • Infotainment System Malfunctions: Several owners have reported issues with the infotainment system of the 2022 Taos, including problems with the audio, GPS, phone connectivity, and screen blackout. Instances of the screen going black, requiring manual resets, and intermittent radio malfunctions have been highlighted as common concerns among owners.
  • Location of Gas Pedal: Another notable problem reported by owners is the placement of the gas pedal in the Taos. Some have mentioned that the gas pedal is oddly located to the farthest right side of the pit, making it uncomfortable to accelerate smoothly. This design flaw can impact the driving experience and driver comfort.
  • Seat Belt Warning Signal: Owners have mentioned issues with the passenger seat belt warning signal, which comes on randomly even when the seat is empty. This can be an annoying distraction for drivers, as they have to fasten the seat belt to stop the warning signal.

These common problems reported by owners of the 2022 Volkswagen Taos highlight various issues ranging from safety concerns like stalling and loss of power to discomfort due to interior design flaws and malfunctions in the infotainment system. Addressing these issues is crucial for enhancing the overall reliability and satisfaction of Taos owners.

  • Summary: The radio system constantly blanks out and will not come back on for hours even after trying to turn it off and back on. There are major issues that point to the recalls that are known for the 2022 VE Taos however, there are no recalls for my specific vehicle. The vehicle check engine light is constantly on and there is constantly an issue with the fuel system. The Taos has issues with acceleration and shifting into other gears. The Taos now has a ticking sound and is at the mile range of (50,000- 60,000) which others who have complained about engine failures. This has been a current and ongoing problem with this vehicle and has cause a headache.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-28
  • VIN: 3VVCX7B25NM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: I recently started experiencing a delay in acceleration after my car has stopped at a light or stop sign. The car doesn’t immediately accelerate when the gas pedal is used but then it catches and takes off lunging forward very quickly. The has caused many close calls especially with left hand turns. I have almost been hit multiple times due to the car not going and oncoming traffic continuing. I have also almost rear ended other drivers due to the surge of acceleration when the car finally takes off. I took my car to the dealer for an oil change and brought this to their attention. They told me it was a known issue, particularly with the Volkswagen Taos. They said they had several vehicles come in for inspection citing the same problem. So I assumed they would have a solution since it is a known issue, but I was told there was nothing they could do to fix it. They told me this was why my check engine light was on when I brought my vehicle in, they tested for errors, found none, turned the light off, and sent me on my way with my vehicle still experiencing this “turbo lag”. I goggled the issue and there is a lot of information online and reports of the same experience but no solutions. Does someone need to die before car manufacturers are held accountable to fixing this? It is documented with the dealership that I had concerns about this and I will be taking legal action should an accident occur because of this issue because this isn’t right. They literally told me, “I would hate to charge you money for us to do work on your car knowing we cannot fix it.” And of course the issue didn’t show up until my car hit a certain number of miles. I bought the car brand new in 2021 and have maintained the required servicing.

Once again rear brakes have premature pad wear and need to be replaced at 19k miles and 2 years of ownership. This has cost has been denied by both the dealership and VW. Premature rear brake pad wear (replacing pads every 7-9k miles) is a defect, not an anomoly.

  • Summary: I went for my 30K mile warranty check. As I was as driving to the appointment the red engine light came on. It was the engine coolant. There is an issue with the head gasket on this model. I asked for it to be checked. The Service department said there is no leak and they replenished the coolant. I have read about this with many other VW Taos owners. I was also told I need new brakes. The brakes were replaced 16,000 miles ago. The brakes are substandard. This is the second time I've needed brakes on my car. I only have 29K miles on the car.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
  • VIN: 3VVLX7B20NM
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Periodically, when trying to accelerate, the car stutters as if it's not getting any fuel and the check engine light will flash on briefly, then go off, and keep flashing on when pressing the gas pedal. It will continue to do this until you stop, turn the car off, open then close the door, let it set for about a minute, start the car again, and you HAVE to turn off the Automatic start/stop. Once you do that, and continue to keep turning off the auto start/stop every time you start the car for a few days to a week, it will resolve the issue for about a few months (or shorter if you drive frequently to where the auto start/stop is activated more frequently). -Engine? -Fuel Injection? -Automatic Start/Stop The car stuttered and acted like it was going to shut off while driving down the road. This could have caused an accident or even caused irreplaceable engine damage. It has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or service center because it is random and once you shut the car off and the auto start/stop, it resolves the issue for a short time. I have called the dealer and I have called VW company to report the issue, but they both just refer me back to the other. No, the vehicle has not been inspected. No symptoms or warning lamps. The check engine light only comes on after the car stutters and struggles to accelerate for a few seconds, then it will flash on and off depending of if I am pressing the gas pedal.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-06
  • VIN: 3VVMX7B22NM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Good afternoon, I own a 2022 VW Taos since April of 2022, I took my car for service to the dealership for 10k and 20k. When my vehicle had approximately 14,000 miles I do not know if the technicians actually checked my rear breaks. One more thing I got a letter from VW company saying that the VW Taos had issues with premature worn out rear brakes, the warranty was extended for a period of time of 2 years or 24,000 miles. Recently close to 2 weeks ago my Taos started making really bad noises coming from my rear breaks, made and appointment for today 10:00 am 8/6/2024 at Emich VW in Denver Co. When 30k service was performed and rear breaks were checked the VW gave me the surprise that I needed new rear breaks replacement of pads and rotors, I informed them about the service bulletin of the issues with the rear breaks but they stated that because the deadline was on April/2024 it was not covered under warranty. This is very frustrating because VW should extend the warranty on something that they know is defective from the factory and they already knew the issues that they had with the rear breaks, now dealership gave a quote of over 900 dlls to get it fix, my safety was at risk including my family's because VW knew about this but they gave a deadline of 2 years knowing that the breaks will fail around 24,000 miles or after the 2 years, something is wrong with the break system and I know because I used to be a mechanic. It has been just over 4 months since the deadline on April and I would like to make VW responsible for this issues and fix my car for free under warranty.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-21
  • VIN: 3VVDX7B29NM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: First, I purchased my 2022 VW Taos (VIN [XXX] ) brand new from Rudolph VW in El Paso, Texas on [XXX]. For the most part, the vehicle has maintained its integrity until it was brought to my attention that the rear brakes needed replacement at 7, 230 miles. The brake replacement occurred April of 2023 and replaced by a warranty extension that was offered by VW and at no cost to me. As you can see, not too many miles are on the vehicle from date of purchase to the time the brakes were replaced in April of 2023. Based on my conversation with the dealership, VW is very aware of this problem based on the mere fact that the quality of the brake pad is not up to par. On June of 2024, I took my car in for a wheel alignment and was told once again the rear brakes were in need of replacement at a cost to me of $600. I was really confused and concerned how this can be since I don’t have a lot of miles on the vehicle YoY. After discussing this issue with the Certified VW Mechanic at the dealership, other Taos owners have experienced the same problem with the rear brake's wearing out too soon! I also got a second opinion from a reputable mechanic in my area, and was told the rear brakes shouldn’t be wearing out that quickly. While there, after additional inspection of the rear brakes, the mechanic made me aware the left rear caliper is damaged and requires replacement. At this point, I am seeking help to begin an investigation which I hope will create a recall. I thank you for your attention to this matter. If you require documentation, please let me know. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
  • VIN: 3VVJX7B26NM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchase a 2022 VW Taos in February of 2022. Right after I purchase I got a coolant warning light. Took it to dealer and they added coolant. This stated happening a couple of time with the same fix by dealer. In March of 2023 they tested the cooling system and found nothing wrong and said the reason the car was loosing coolant was because the cap was not installed correctly and the coolant evaporated. The car still continues to loose coolant. Took the car back a few more times again the same fix, add coolant. Last week the check engine light came on and took the car to dealer. Now they tell me the car needs a new head cover gasket and since I have 58,000 miles it is no longer under warranty. I have taken the car to the dealership numerous times for the coolant being low and nothing was ever done to fix it. Now I am stuck paying $5200 for repairs that should have been done when the car was under warranty but an incompetent dealership never figured out what was wrong with it.

SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
  • VIN: 3VVYX7B27NM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: It is my understanding there have been reports of issues with the rear brakes on the 2022 Volkswagen Taos. Some owners have complained about excessive brake noise, premature wear, and in some cases, problems with the electronic parking brake. These issues have led to concerns about the reliability and safety of the braking system in the Taos. It’s also my understanding Volkswagen has acknowledged some of these problems and has issued technical service bulletins (TSBs) to address complaints. I am experiencing rear brake issues on my 2022 Taos' rear brakes as stated above. I have not been issued a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) nor has Volkswagon Corporate USA issued any recalls. My car has 18,000 miles and is scheduled to go in for service this Wednesday. When I called my dealership’s service department, the service manager stated he was aware of premature rear brake wear on the 2022 Taos. I find it hard to believe Volkswagon Corporate doesn’t know about this problem however the service manager does. An internet inquiry will prove TSB’s have been issued. One source is ChatGBT among other sources. I fully expect this to be covered under warranty and if it not, I would like to know how I can contact someone directly at the NHTSA if possible.

  • VIN: 3VVTX7B22NM
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: In the two years I have had this car it has gone into limp home mode stating “start/stop error” while I am drivig the vehicle. I have taken it to my dealership and they will not do anything to fix the problem. The vehicle has also cut off twice while I am driving it with no warning lights which has caused other Volkswagen models to be recalled
2024-06-15

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-15
  • VIN: 3VV1X7B2XNM
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: This complaint is related to a coolant leak. The issue started around the 13,000 mile mark when warning lamps came on at the instrument cluster. The warning was for low coolant. The vehicle was brought into the dealership and they replaced the cap to the reservoir and could not find additional issues. Off and on the coolant warning was triggered and was advised by the dealer to top off the coolant as this is just something that happens with these models due to the air pressure. At 56,000 miles, the coolant ran low again and under a pressure test, it was noticed that it was a leak at the cylinder head and the engine would need to be fixed upwards of 4,000 dollars. This is an issue not only financially but for the safety of those within the vehicle. This is due to the vehicles capability of overheating and no longer working as such low miles, causing those owning and driving it to be left stranded on the roadways.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-02
  • VIN: 3VVLX7B2XNM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Volkswagen Taos. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal squeaking sound coming from the brake pads. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where the brake pads were replaced. The contact stated that the brake pads were replaced recently; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer for a second time, and it was determined that the brake pads were worn. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that while searching online, she became aware of the failure with similar vehicles. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 21,000.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-02
  • VIN: 3VVPX7B27NM
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: There is a break issue where they are using cheap quality parts. My car has 26,000 miles in 3 years and the breaks and rotors are all gone. When we try to break the whole car starts shaking. Dealership know about the issue but won’t replace the break pads because of car having 2000 more miles than warranty.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-15
  • VIN: 3VVWX7B26NM
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: In April 2024, the VW Taos leaked coolant due to a faulty gasket. Upon being fixed, an EPC light came on and leaked oil. This caused us to have it towed to the dealership for repairs to the oil cap lining. After the car was returned, the light was cleared and no longer leaked oil. In May 2024, the EPC light reappeared and cause a significant reduction when accelerating at 50 mph. When the light came on the vehicle had errors stating that the max rpms are exceeded and the car reduced power. We took the car to VW State College who was unable to find an issue with the car and cleared the light. We were able to drive the vehicle at slow speeds back to Moon Township for diagnostic and testing. The vehicle has remained with VW since late may and as of 6/11/2024, Volkswagen is unable to determine the cause of the EPC light. The second time the EPC light came on, the car stalled out at an intersection causing significant injury risk to the occupants. VW Moon Township has performed the investigations and VW State College was unable to diagnose the EPC light cause. The EPC light did not appear prior to the initial coolant leak.

  • Consequence: A rearview camera that does not display an image reduces the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Dealers will update the infotainment software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 16, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen's customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 91DV.

Negative 2022 Volkswagen Taos car reviews

I am experiencing multiple issues with my Taos, including stalling at stoplights, delayed notification from the rear sensor, recurring rear hatch door malfunction, and random blackouts and reboots of the info system and phone when charging. These issues are concerning and require immediate attention.

Jerks when taking off, road noise is so bad I can not hear radio when on I-80. Washed it first Tim’s and paint coming off wheels. Very difficult to wash and dry. I have owned 10+ new cars and this Taos is by far the worst vehicle I have ever bought. DO NOT BUY THIS [non-permissible content removed]!!!

I purchased my Taos four months ago and unfortunately, I have experienced some issues with it. I had a rat stuck in the dashboard and when I reported it to the dealer, they did not believe me. Additionally, the radio sometimes goes black or freezes randomly, and there is a clicking sound under the steering wheel. The display also changes by itself and sometimes freezes, making it impossible to change. I had an incident where I was stuck at Walmart for over five minutes because the car could not detect my key, even though I had it in front of the dashboard and was waving it around. I have also had a few instances where the rearview camera was unavailable. On top of that, the car has turned off a few times at lights and I had to manually restart it. I had to replace the emission valve and pump due to failure, and the car is quite bouncy and noisy when driving. Unfortunately, now one of my rear brakes on the passenger side is completely gone and the rotor is damaged. The dealership is blaming me for this issue and telling me that it is unsafe to drive. They want me to sign a waiver to get the vehicle back and are telling me that there are over 400 people waiting for their services. Lastly, the transmission is very jerky.

I recently purchased this car for my wife, which is my first brand new car. Unfortunately, shortly after taking it to the dealership for its first oil change, the check engine light came on. They informed me that overfilling the fuel can interfere with the sensor and that they would need to order a new filler neck. However, just a week later, the car started sputtering and it turned out that the fuel had become contaminated. I had to pay $350 to remove the 'bad' fuel and change the filters. Although I had used the same fuel in my other vehicle with no issues, I am not happy with the situation and now regret buying a new car.

The interior of the car looks nice and has decent room, but unfortunately, my experience with the Taos has not been great. Despite owning it for over two months, I regret my purchase. My previous car, a 6-year-old Hyundai, was much smoother, more enjoyable, and more technologically advanced. The Taos has many annoying elements such as beeps, alarms, and messages that can be distracting while driving. The vehicle software can be disorganized and unpredictable, and the digital cockpit can change unexpectedly. Additionally, the top-level trim (SEL) lacks some features such as HomeLink, power lift gate, seat memory, or ventilated seats. The frequent distractions while driving can make the vehicle dangerous, and the wireless charging pad can make devices too hot to use. The engine also bucks and surges at low speeds, which can be uncomfortable for passengers. The infotainment system has rebooted while driving, causing a complete loss of media, communication, navigation, etc. The navigation system database was almost 2 years out of date when I picked up the vehicle, and the voice dictation is haphazard for the built-in nav and CarPlay. The IQDrive components have not been reliable or worked properly for the level of safety I expected. I have turned off as many as I could and quit using the rest in order to reduce distractions and unexpected behaviors by the vehicle. The rear cross-traffic alert (RCTA) is not very useful in real-world parking lot environments. Overall, the problems and quirks with this vehicle can be frustrating and sometimes even scary for you and your passengers. I now understand why VW cut 1/3 off their warranties. While I am already looking to trade, I hope that the dealership will address these issues and improve the quality of the Taos in the future.

Positive 2022 Volkswagen Taos car reviews

I replaced my Audi Q5 as the repair costs were astronomical. However, I'm really enjoying my new car. The fuel economy is unbelievable, the acceleration and sport mode are great, and the interior lights are fun. The headlights and exterior lighting are awesome, and u-turns are a breeze. Additionally, the safety features on the SEL are outstanding. I have the front wheel drive and after 15,000 miles I’ve had no problems.

  2. Stan Lang 2024-11-02

I can tell you really love your new Taos! It sounds like it's been a great addition to your life. The safety features must give you peace of mind while driving. I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it so much!

  3. Gordon Rosenbaum 2024-10-02

After the initial factory defect was corrected, the vehicle has been wonderful. I'm glad to hear that you have no complaints after 23,000 miles!

  4. Abdullah Crona 2024-09-19

I leased the SE in July 2021 and have driven just over 10k miles. I absolutely love that it only needs an oil change every 10k miles, and the first two are covered by the dealer. Fortunately, my Taos passed the recalls. Although some people refer to a 'lag' or 'jump', I haven't experienced this issue when the auto start/stop function is turned off. It's the first thing I do once I start the car. Mine's a turbo and it drives like a dream. The sound system and technology are good, although the speakers could be better. I did have a warranty defect with the sunglass holder, which opened one day while I was driving and wouldn't close. The dealer is taking care of it and mentioned that it happened with some of the VW models. The Taos gets decent gas mileage (although I can't really compare it to my hybrid car lol). I love the heated seats, and there's tons of legroom in the back seat for my tall son, as well as plenty of cargo space. It drove well in the snow (mine is FWD), and the auto bright lights are wonderful. The initial wipers were squeaky, but the dealer is replacing those too. Overall, it's a fun car to drive, and I love the grey color. I wanted a small SUV that didn't feel small, and the Taos is perfect for that at an affordable price. This is my second VW (my husband is a diehard VW fan and owner).

  5. Patrick Willms 2024-08-24

My little Taos is exactly what I was looking for - an affordable and practical SUV. I noticed that the 8spd transmission on the FWD model is much smoother than the 7spd versions I test drove. While the AC can make it a bit clunky, it's still understandable. The stopping distances are decent and there's plenty of storage space. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase of this nice little SUV.
