2017 Cadillac Ct6 problems

cadillac logo

The Cadillac CT6 (short for Cadillac Touring 6) is a full-size luxury car manufactured by Cadillac between 2016 and 2020 over two generations. The first generation CT6 was introduced at the 2015 New York International Auto Show and went on sale in the U.S. in March 2016. It is the first car to adopt the brand's revised naming strategy, as well as the first rear-wheel drive full-size Cadillac sedan since the Fleetwood was discontinued in 1996.

In 2020, the CT6 was discontinued in the United States, to be replaced by the forthcoming Cadillac Celestiq liftback sedan.

First generation (2016)

The first-generation CT6 is built on a different platform than the smaller CTS and is engineered as a rear-wheel drive vehicle with optional all-wheel drive. In addition to its primary markets of North America and China, the CT6 was also offered in Europe, South Korea, Japan, and the Middle East.

General Motors discontinued the assembly of the Cadillac CT6 in the US in February 2020 due to poor sales and retooling of the Detroit/Hamtramck facility for electric vehicle production, beginning with the new GMC Hummer EV.

Common 2017 Cadillac Ct6 problems

The 2017 Cadillac CT6 has been reported to have several common problems, primarily related to the transmission and brakes.

Transmission problems are one of the most frequently reported issues with the 2017 Cadillac CT6. The 8L transmission in this model has been criticized for its poor performance, leading to unpleasant driving experiences. Shift points can become corrupted, and shifts between first and second gears can be violent. Downshifts can cause the vehicle to pulsate as it coasts to a stop. These issues can make the car difficult to drive and potentially lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.

Brake problems are another significant concern for 2017 Cadillac CT6 owners. The brake system has been reported to struggle with proper operation, placing drivers and passengers at risk of accidents. Complaints include the brake system failing to engage, the brake booster needing replacement, loud screeching sounds from the wheels, and black greasy material covering the wheels. These issues have been traced back to faulty front radial arms and brake shields, indicating a potential design or manufacturing flaw in the brake system.

In response to these brake problems, General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for certain Cadillac CT6 vehicles due to software errors in the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). The defect can cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Antilock Braking System (ABS) to malfunction and become disabled, increasing the risk of accidents for drivers.

These issues with the 2017 Cadillac CT6's transmission and brake system have led to numerous complaints and recalls, affecting the car's overall reliability and safety. Potential buyers and current owners should be aware of these common problems and consider addressing them promptly to ensure a safe and enjoyable driving experience.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-01
  • VIN: 1G6KN5R61HU
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: SIDEWALL CRACKING ISSUE WITH ALL FOR TIRES - PIRELLI P ZERO NERO 245/40/R20 While traveling out of town (Dallas to San Antonio) we experienced some tire issues which led to us needing to replace all 4 tires. Several weeks prior, we began to noticed a very slight loss of tire pressure and had the tires checked twice for any objects or other damage – Nothing found. We also had the tires rotated to trouble shoot and rule out any issues with sensors – none. Both times, the service shops did not mention or recognize any tire damage or issues. During our 5 hour drive to San Antonio, we started to see tire pressure issues again along with a noticeable sound from the tires. With this concern, we took vehicle to Firestone for diagnosis and to our surprise they found severe damage and cracks to the side walls of the tires. Firestone confirmed the tire damage was not safe to drive on and due to the location of the damages, we would need to replace all 4 tires. We were shocked to see such severe cracking damage and were at a loss for how this could occur. The tires were in very good condition and still had significant tire tread with even wear. After some research we discovered that this type of side wall tire cracking has been know to happen and even Pirelli has recalled tires for this issue. We did not see a specific recall to this size tire but did find that Pirelli had another recall on tires made in 2016 saying "THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A PRODUCTION ERROR (INCORRECT CARCASS COMPONENT), AND THE TIRES MAY SHOW SURFACE CRACKING IN THE LOWER SIDEWALL OF THE TIRE...". Please review this claim and confirm receipt. We are hoping to get some kind of reimbursement for the damages that we believe are a result of faulty or defective tires - this is what the Firestone technician also stated on video recording (I can provide video if needed). IN THE UPSHIFT, THE CAR VIOLENTLY LUNGES FORWARD ONCE THE ACCELERATION REV FROM THE PUSH OF THE PEDAL CATCHES UP WITH THE GEAR SHIFTING, NO MATTER HOW DELICATELY YOU MIGHT PUSH THE PEDAL. FEELS LIKE THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN HIT FROM BEHIND ONCE IT CATCHES. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-01-05
  • VIN: 1G6KH5R64HU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH MY VEHICLE THAT INVOLVES HARD SHIFTING AT TIMES AND ALSO, THE VEHICLE SOMETIMES WILL LURCH QUITE ABRUPTLY. IT ACTUALLY FEELS AS IF THE VEHICLE WAS REAR ENDED. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP ON 4 OCCASIONS AND THEY WERE ONLY ABLE TO "REPLICATE" THE PROBLEM ONE TIME. THIS HARD SHIFT/LURCHING OCCURS USUALLY WHEN AT A STAND STILL AND, ONCE YOU REMOVE YOUR FOOT FROM THE BRAKE, VEHICLE MAY SHIFT HARD. IT DOESN'T MATTE WHERE I AM; WHETHER ON STREETS OR ON THE FREEWAY. IF VEHICLE IS STOPPED, THEN THIS HAPPENS ON OCCASION. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF I AM USING THE "AUTOHOLD" FEATURE OR NOT BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM TO OCCUR AS OFTEN IF I AM USING THE "SPORT" MODE WHEN DRIVING. THE LAST TIME THIS EVENT OCCURRED, THE DEALERSHIP KEPT THE CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND CLAIMED THAT THEY COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT, I DROVE AWAY AND THE ISSUE OCCURRED WITH ME LESS THAN 2 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE 2 GRANDSONS THAT I "TAXI" AROUND AND THEY HAVE BOTH FELT THIS PROBLEM. AS A MATTER OF FACT, ANYONE WHO RIDES IN MY CAR IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BUT, FOR SOME REASON, CADILLAC IS STATING THAT THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME THIS OCCURRED WAS ON 9/13/17; AGAIN ON 10/5/17. (TERM USED WAS CCND - CUSTOMER CONCERN NOT DUPLICATED). NOW, ON 11/03/17 THEY DUPLICATED

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I recently purchased a used Cadillac CT6 2017 on December 27th, 2023. Unfortunately, I've noticed that the transmission is slipping or shifting hard. Since the engine light has also come on, I plan on taking it back to the dealer to have it checked out. It's surprising to me that a car with less than 50,000 miles would have such a hard shift. Thanks for your help!

  2. Trace Ledner 2024-10-29

I had some concerns about the transmission when I purchased this car, but unfortunately, there were several other hidden issues that the dealer did not address before putting it up for sale. The car shakes quite badly due to all four wheels being bent, and I suspect that the shocks/struts are also bad. I did request that the mechanic drive the car to identify any issues, as I had to fly in to see the car before purchasing it. Although the sales manager did drive the car, he did not notice these issues. While the limited warranty is appreciated, I am a bit concerned about the distance between myself and the dealer. If necessary, I may have to drive the car back to have everything fixed, which would be a bit of an inconvenience. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that everything will work out in the end.

  3. Cruz Batz 2024-09-05

Hello everyone, I wanted to share my experience with my 2017 Cadillac CT6. I purchased it with 34k miles and drove it problem-free for about 3 months. Unfortunately, I started experiencing some noises and had to take it to the shop multiple times before they finally fixed some cover rattling on the catalytic converter. They ended up welding it instead of repairing it, which did the trick. However, I then had issues with the fuel injectors, which left me stranded. The last straw was when the car would jerk forward while in traffic. I ultimately decided to trade it in for a Mercedes S550, which has been the best decision I've made when it comes to cars. I have always been a fan of Cadillacs and had a DTS prior, but this experience has made me appreciate the importance of a reliable vehicle. Thank you for listening.

  4. Kendall West 2024-07-18

I purchased a preowned certified 2017 Cadillac CT6, which is a lovely car. However, within two weeks of owning it, I noticed that the transmission was clanking and vibrating when shifting into a lower gear. Even my wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, thought that the car was coming apart.

  5. Pete White 2024-06-03

The ride quality of a Cadillac can be negatively impacted by the use of low profile tires. This was observed in both my 2013 XTS and the CT6, where the same type of low tire caused grinding on the expensive wheel and a bumpy ride. It is unfortunate that the smooth ride that Cadillac is known for is being compromised due to the use of incorrect tire height.

  1. Marley Weimann 2024-11-16

If you're new to owning a luxury sedan, take some time to learn about the features, where they are located, and how to program them. When I transferred from a Cadillac XTS to my CT 6, my learning curve was much shorter. However, some features like the surround vision, USB, and hotspot may take some getting used to. ONSTAR uses the built-in navigation system, so it's important to understand the interface features between Onstar and the onboard navigation system. One feature that can be confusing is the memory setting from your remote key fob. They are not numbered anymore, so you can confuse the memory setting for the seats and mirrors if you transfer remote keys. This is the one feature you should have the dealer explain before you drive your car away. It will save time later. Other than that, curl up with the instruction books and enjoy. After more than a year, I can say that the Premium Red car color is great as well. My car is outside 24/7 and looks clean all the time except during pollen season. Now, three years later, I still love the car, but I will be replacing it with a 2020 Lexus LS 500 F Sport next week. I wanted to upgrade my car to a Double Turbo CT 6 Sport Premium Luxury, but GM discontinued that engine and car, and essentially discontinued me after driving Cadillacs since 2006.

  2. Easton Kuhic 2024-11-14

The CT6 has been fully redesigned to be very techie and easy to operate. The only downside is that the owner's manual can be a bit difficult to navigate due to somewhat lacking indexing.

  3. Chester Gottlieb 2024-10-17
