1996 Buick Roadmaster problems

buick logo

The Buick Roadmaster is an automobile built by Buick from 1936 until 1942, from 1946 until 1958, and then again from 1991 until 1996. Roadmasters produced between 1936 and 1958 were built on Buick's longest non-limousine wheelbase and shared their basic structure with the entry-level Cadillac Series 65, the Buick Limited, and after 1940, the Oldsmobile 98. Between 1946 and 1957, the Roadmaster served as Buick's flagship.

It became the marque's largest vehicle when it was resurrected for the 1991 through 1996 model years. The Roadmaster sedan, a C-body vehicle over its eight previous generations, shared the B-body for the first time in its history. It was 10 in (254 mm) longer with a 5 in (127 mm) greater wheelbase than the C-body Buick Park Avenue. It was also larger both in wheelbase (2 in (51 mm)) and overall length (6 in (152 mm)) than the K-body Cadillac DeVille.

A Buick Roadmaster Estate station wagon was introduced in 1947 and was manufactured in several generations through 1996.

  • Optispark Distributor Problems:
    • Some Optispark distributor problems in the Buick Roadmaster were linked to water pump wear and leakage, which could affect the vehicle's ignition system. Issues with the distributor can lead to starting difficulties and engine performance issues.
  • Starting Issues:
    • Starting problems, such as intermittent starting, no start conditions, and engine stalling, have been reported by owners of the Buick Roadmaster. These issues could be related to components like the electronic ignition module, fuel system, spark plugs, and sensors.

Each of these problems can significantly impact the performance, safety, and reliability of the 1996 Buick Roadmaster. Owners facing these issues should consider thorough diagnostics and repairs to ensure the vehicle operates optimally.

1996 Buick Roadmaster engine

What year was the best Buick Roadmaster?

1994-1996

The 260-horsepower LT1 offered in the 1994-1996 model years offer the most coveted powerplant. Yep, that's the Buick wagon with the “Corvette motor,” albeit detuned to produce less horsepower with iron heads and a two-bolt main.

What engine is in a 1996 Buick Roadmaster?

Standard equipment on all Roadmasters included anti-lock brakes, dual air bags, electronically controlled air conditioning and analog gauges. Also standard was a 5.7-liter V-8 engine rated 260 horsepower at 5,000 rpm with torque rated 330 pound-feet at 2,400 rpm.

What is the top speed of the 1996 Buick Roadmaster Wagon?

The power control module (PCM) was shared between the F-body and the B-body, but Buick limited the car to a top speed of 108 mph, much lower than the Vette's terminal velocity.

Why won't my 1996 Buick Roadmaster start?

The most common reasons a Buick Roadmaster won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-06-23
  • VIN: 1G4BT52P9TR
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: UPON LEAVING FOR WORK IN THE MORNING, MY 1996 BUICK ROADMASTER WITH 56,600 MILES WOULD NOT START. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO A LOCAL AUTO REPAIR GARAGE. WENT TO PICK UP CAR A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME I WAS LUCKY THERE HAD NOT BEEN A FIRE OR EXPLOSION DUE TO THE SMOLDERING FUEL PUMP AND MELTED WIRING HARNESS INSIDE THE FUEL TANK. HE GAVE ME THE PART. I THOUGHT THAT GENERAL MOTORS WOULD BE INTERESTED IN HEARING ABOUT THIS DEFECT AS I WAS SURE THAT MANY OTHER ROADMASTERS ARE STILL ON THE ROAD. I CALLED THE CUSTOMER RELATIONS DEPT. ON 6/27 AND RELATED THIS SAFETY CONCERN AND ALSO SENT AN E-MAIL TO THEM ON THEIR WEBSITE OFFERING TO SEND PICTURES OF THIS PART. AS OF TODAY, 7/6/06, I HAD NOT HEARD FROM ANYONE SO I CALLED AGAIN. I EMPHASIZED MY CONCERNS AGAIN AND ALSO REQUESTED TO BE COMPENSATED FOR THIS REPAIR AS I FELT THIS WAS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR PROBLEM, BUT A DEFECT PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TOO OLD. I TOLD THEM THAT I DID NOT REALIZE THERE WAS A TIME LIMIT ON PEOPLE'S SAFETY AND WELL BEING. I ALSO TOLD THEM THAT I WAS DISAPPOINTED THAT NO ONE AT GM WAS INTERESTED IN SEEING THIS PART OR PICTURES. THEY COULD BE RELYING ON THE FACT THAT THE GAS TANK IS UNDER A VACUUM, BUT IN THIS CASE, THE PUMP WAS ACTUALLY SMOLDERING AND IF I HAD HAPPENED TO STOP AND GET GAS WHILE THIS WAS SMOLDERING AND REMOVED THE GAS CAP AND ADDED THE THIRD ELEMENT, OXYGEN, THERE VERY WELL COULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE OR EXPLOSION. THIS IS AN ORIGINAL GM PART AND I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THAT GM HAS NO INTEREST IN THIS MATTER. THE ORIGINAL MILEAGE SHOULD BE A FACTOR, NOT JUST THE YEAR. CUSTOMER RELATIONS TOLD ME THEY WOULD SEND ME IN WRITING THEIR REFUSAL TO ASSIST ME WITH ANY COMPENSATION FOR THE REPAIR. WHAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST IS THEIR LACK OF CONCERN FOR OTHER PEOPLE'S SAFETY. *JB

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-08-29
  • VIN: 1G4BR82P2TR
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: SINCE NEW THIS 1996 BUICK ROADMASTER STATION WAGON HAS HAD 4 TRANSMISSIONS INSTALLED IN IT. THIS PARTICULAR CAR HAS THE FACTORY INSTALLED 5000LB TOW PACKAGE. THIS CAR USES THE GM, 4L60E, 4 SPEED, ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSION. ACCORDING TO THE ORIGINAL OWNER, THE 4L60E TRANSMISSION WENT OUT WHEN IT ONLY HAD ROUGHLY 40,000 MILES ON IT. HE TOLD ME THE 2ND TRANSMISSION WENT OUT 40,000MILES AFTER IT WAS INSTALLED. THE PREVIOUS OWNER TOLD ME HE HAD THE 3RD TRANSMISSION INSTALLED WHEN THE CAR HAD 85,000 MILES ON IT. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH 119,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER, AND THE 3RD TRANSMISSION FAILED WHEN THE CAR HAD 142,000 MILES ON IT. THE 4L60E TRANSMISSION IS A VERY POOR TRANSMISSION FOR THE TASK ASSIGNED. THE CAR ALREADY WEIGHS 4500LBS AND IS RATED TO TOW 5000 MORE LBS. MAKING UP ROUGHLY A 10,000LB PLATFORM. THIS TRANSMISSION FAILS IN MANY, MANY VEHICLES IT WAS INSTALLED IN REGARDLESS OF PURPOSE, USE, OR CARE. *NM

Negative 1996 Buick Roadmaster car reviews

  1. Neal Mayert 2024-07-25

This car is a grocery getting rocket with power to spare. Unfortunately, it was designed with a limited amount of space. If you're over 6 feet tall, you may find it uncomfortable to sit in the front passenger seat. However, the rear seat is more accommodating. It's a shame that GM didn't consider the needs of taller drivers and passengers.

  2. Harley Dach 2024-02-26

Great drive train, but unfortunately the interior and exterior trim are poor. It's below average and not up to the standard of the 1993 model. Although I like the car, I wouldn't consider buying another 1996 due to the lousy trim and interior quality.

Positive 1996 Buick Roadmaster car reviews

  1. Abel Connelly 2024-11-15

This vehicle is really comfortable and makes for a great road trip car. Plus, there's plenty of room for all your travel essentials!

  2. Laurel West 2024-10-09

Where else on the planet can you find such a versatile car like this... without going broke? It has a full perimeter frame, power to spare, an ungodly towing capacity, and all the creature comforts... and the best part is that they just don't die! It's great for family or formal occasions.

  3. Sigrid Rau 2024-09-23

This car has been amazing! It has taken me on countless trips all around Texas and has even helped me move several times. Despite having a lot of miles, it still runs like a dream and nothing seems to be able to stop it!

  4. Greg Hauck 2024-07-22

Excellent ride! It has great towing ability and power to spare. It handles well in snow and ice. Plus, every kid in the neighbourhood loves riding in it with the rear-facing seat and sunroof.

  5. Lowell Konopelski 2024-07-16

I used to own the same vehicle, but in a light blue color. It's the ultimate Station Wagon in America, with enough style to fit in any neighborhood or Yacht Club. It was also a reliable ride on stormy nights when I was trying to get home in upstate New York. I really miss it. This one looks to be in amazing condition. Don't hesitate, buy it now!
