The Buick Envision is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by General Motors and marketed under the Buick brand since 2014. It is exclusively manufactured in China by the SAIC-GM joint venture, supplying the Chinese and North American markets.

Concept

The Envision was first introduced in 2011 as a design concept. It was a small crossover with two large scissor doors opening upward. The concept was a plug-in hybrid with advanced technology such as a solar roof and head-up display. The waterfall grille made it to the production version of the Envision.

First generation (2014)

The Envision was first introduced in China in August 2014, also known by its Chinese name, “Ang Ke Wei” (昂科威). It went on sale in China on October 20.

The Envision debuted in the U.S. at the North American International Auto Show on January 11, 2016, sharing the segment with a second generation GMC Terrain and the Chevrolet Equinox. It went on sale in the United States in the summer of 2016, making it the first Chinese-built GM vehicle to be sold in America. It was initially offered with all-wheel drive, and subsequently with optional front-wheel drive for model year 2017.

The North American version of the Envision features two powertrains: a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 197 hp (147 kW) and 192 lb⋅ft (260 N⋅m) torque, and a turbo-charged 2-liter four-cylinder engine SAE certified at 252 hp (188 kW) and 260 lb⋅ft (353 N⋅m) torque. Both were initially paired with a third-generation six-speed transmission. For the 2016 model year, the Envision was only available in Premium I and Premium II trim levels, with the 2.0L turbo engine, seven active safety technologies, and OnStar/Intellilink connectivity. The trim levels expanded to five for the 2017 model year.

In addition to the larger engines offered in North America, Chinese buyers also have the option of a turbocharged 1.5-liter unit.

  • Summary: October 2023 my brake on the drivers side ruptured that let to the master cylinder. Lost brake pressure and all brake fluid resulting in no braking ability at all. May 9th 2024 took my vehicle for scheduled maintenance and was told vehicle was in excellent condition. 20 days later the brake line on the passenger side ruptured leading to the master cylinder resulting brake fluid leakage and no brake performance. This issue is a previous recall and should be reinstated. I've spent twelve hundred dollars on repairs for an issue that publicized as an open recall. I could have lost my life and Buick GMC refuse to do anything about it.

  • Summary: When I am accelerating at a faster pace, always at 40 mph, my vehicle will start to shake. I have tested it several times now getting onto the interstate, it becomes an issue on the "on ramp" because I have to release the acceleration pedal and then very slowly get up to speed which causes me to not be able to get close enough to the posted speed while on the interstate which in turn causes other drivers to either slow down or try to move in another lane. I took it to my local Buick dealership (Trecek Automotive of Portage) on 4/29/24. They charged me $172.68 for diagnostics which resulted in this: Test drove. Did not feel shaking at first. The harder the vehicle was accelerated, the worse the shaking got. Recommend replacing front CV axle shafts. Cost approx. $1300. At the same time, I had a leak in the left rear axle seal which luckily was under warranty and was replaced. My 2017 Buick Envision has only 56,000 miles on it.

  • Summary: I had just left the driveway at my in-laws house, which is approx. an hour and 45 minutes from my home. Within moments, randomly, the sun roof popped open, as if someone had hit a remote. It would not close, and after trying for a bit, decided to drive home and we would address it there. When I hit the open road, the roof went the rest of the way open and then about two miles from the house, I starting choking on the smell of burning plastic. I immediately pulled over on to the shoulder of a side road, turning off the car. My husband was in a vehicle behind me and came over and we were both very concerned the vehicle was going to catch on fire. He tried to pull the fuse in the panel, but when we turned the vehicle back on, there was smoke coming from the sunroof motor area, and the smell was atrocious. The inside hood liner was very warm near the rear of the vehicle with the motor. At that point, we decided to call a tow truck, because it was obvious there was an electrical short. Because the sun roof was stuck open, we had to get a car cover to protect it from the rain coming in. The dealership investigated the next day, and confirmed there was an electrical short that was throwing high-voltage power in to the sunroof. It had melted the motor and wires around it, and had we gone any further, the voltage would have caused a more significant fire. They had to do significant repairs, costing $1400, as well as some clean-up of the interior to try and ensure we weren't continuing to breathe burnt-plastic fumes.

My mechanic replaced with factory GM hoses on both sides. My mechanic is a state of Maryland licensed inspection station and confirmed the failure. No prior warning, Onstar records will confirm, after the fact, of lights and warnings of brake failure.

While trying to slow down the car forcefully slams forward. Other times I have been trying to accelerate from a stop and the car slams forward. When this happens everyone is thrown forward this started happening after repair at Jack Gimbalvo Buick body shop in York. Jack Giambalvo Buick dealership said they can’t duplicate the problem and there are no misfires. I will be calling corporate to make another complaint. I have already been in an accident in this car due to the brakes not working correctly and the whole dash malfunctioning.

The dealership said they thought since there was minor damage to the left front of the car, that this was the cause of the failure. The brake line was replaced with an aftermarket part and brake lines flushed and replaced. We had another instance of brakes going to the floor with little stopping power. This time the right side brake line failed. The dealership noticed that there was no damage on the right side of the car to cause this failure. The dealership told me they sent an email to corporate and checked for a recall on the brake lines. If this car would have been on the highway when either of these failures took place, we might be having a different conversation.   • Summary: Brakes did not engage when my husband pressed on them while he was driving. Brakes when straight to the floor. He noticed brake fluid on the ground and when he filled it back up and pressed on the brakes the fluid spewed out of the brake line. His safety and the safety of others was impacted because he was in traffic and a car started to slow and our Envisions brakes were not working. He had to swerve around multiple cars and go through a traffic light to avoid causing a wreck. This just happened on 7/31 so it has not ben reported but will be going to the dealership tomorrow on 8/1/2022. We did not notice any messages or warning lights on the dash.   • Summary: At 15,238 miles I was at gas station to fill up vehicle only to discover the fuel filler flap was broken and could not get gas nozzle in vehicle for fill up. Immediately had my mechanic look at it and they were able to repair it. They were able to reattach spring but could not attach sealing plate without a disassemble. Had to replace the fuel neck assembly. No warning lights had come on dash for gas vapor, or other things. I have pictures of mileage and broken fuel filler cap. This could have been disastrous if I was in some small town that could not get parts or had run out of gas somewhere or if gas vapors started leaking.

  • Summary: When the car is in auto engine shut off mode, when the brake is released the steering power assist message displays, the steering wheel locks up, the doors unlock and the interior and exterior lights flash. The car will start back up but it takes a second to start. The car is also starting to not start back up and completely shut off at the light. All of the lights will start flashing. This is highly dangerous as the steering wheel lock almost caused my family to get into a major car accident. The car will be taken to a dealership later this week.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2018 GMC Canyon, 2016-2017 Buick Envision, 2016-2018 Chevrolet Colorado and Malibu, 2017-2018 GMC Acadia, 2018 Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Equinox, and GMC Terrain vehicles. The high pressure fuel pump may detach from its mounting flange, possibly resulting in the pump damaging the high pressure fuel line.
  • Consequence: A damaged fuel line can create a fuel leak, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pump, and high pressure fuel pipe, free of charge. The recall began July 2, 2018.   • Consequence: If the service parts do not have energy-absorbing foam blocks, there may be an increased risk of occupant injury in the event of a crash.

An accessory NSV Universal Tablet Holder may have been installed incorrectly onto the front seat head restraints, preventing the head restraint posts from fully engaging in the seat back. If so, the head restraints would fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 202a, "Head Restraints."
  • Consequence: If the head restraint posts are not fully engaging in the seat back, the head restraint may loosen or dislodge, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the head restraints and tablet holders for the correct installation, reinstalling them as necessary, free of charge. The Tire and Loading Information label may display the incorrect maximum weight information. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 110, "Tire Selection and Rims."
  • Consequence: Incorrect weight information may cause an owner to overload the vehicle. Overloading may reduce vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

    We have owned our 2017 Envision Preferred for two years now. We purchased it new for two main reasons: to make it easy for my wife's aging parents to get in and out of the back seat and for its quiet ride on the road, reminiscent of old-fashioned Buick quiet. Initially, the ride was comfortable and quiet, and we were pleased with the pretty decent mileage (averaging 29.8 mpg with 70% highway and 30% city driving) and good fit and finish. However, we have encountered some issues with the service system that have left us feeling disappointed. The auto-reminders from the dealers are inaccurate, despite their ability to query the vehicle at any time. We have dealt with two different dealerships, one small The only fix required is to replace the tires. Although the tread is still good, it is advisable to drive until the tires are more worn before replacing them. I have reached out to the service advisor regarding a prorated replacement, but unfortunately, I have not received a response yet. I have noticed a rattle somewhere under the floorboard in front, which seems to show up when I fill up the gas tank. If I only fill it up 3/4 full, there is no rattle. I have not yet asked the dealer what they might want to do about it. I have found a way around the stop/start feature by driving in manual mode all the time, and I have had no problems with that. Although the transmission can be harsh at times, I still enjoy driving my Envision. I hope that Buick will continue to produce quality vehicles, and I encourage anyone considering an Envision to carefully evaluate the service department before making a purchase.

    I bought a Buick Envision a little over a year ago and was disappointed to find out shortly after that it did not have a CD player. Although I love my Envision, not having a CD player has been a bit of a nuisance for me. I have tried using a flash drive, but it's just not the same as having control over what I want to listen to. Today, I even went to Best Buy to see if they had a CD/MP3 player that would work in my car, but unfortunately, they didn't. Overall, I wish I had known about the lack of a CD player before purchasing the vehicle. I might have considered other options. I guess I'll have to look into other brands like BMW in the future.

    This vehicle has had some challenges since the beginning of ownership. However, we have been proactive in addressing these issues and have worked closely with the dealer to resolve them. The On-star/infotainment systems required a factory reset, which was promptly taken care of by the dealer. The rear seat air conditioning also had an issue, but the dealer was able to replace the A/C evaporator case located under the front instrument panel. Although the vehicle sat for 3 weeks while we waited for parts, we were provided with a rental car during that time. The rear seat air failed again after 3 months, but we continued to drive the vehicle until the same parts were available. We are still working on resolving the conflict between the navigation/infotainment/blue-tooth systems, but we are confident that we will find a solution. Additionally, we have noticed that the visibility of the instrument panel/navigation displays is hampered by the strong sun in Florida. We believe that Buick could enhance visibility by reinstating the windshield tint at the top of the windshield or fabricating some type of instrument panel shield for the navigation screen.

    My last vehicle was a Cadillac SRX and my wife and I loved it. When it was time for a new vehicle, we were on the lot looking at the SRX again. However, my wife saw the Envision and we both decided to test drive it. Two hours later and thousands of dollars saved, we drove home in the Envision. It's been a year since then and we still love the vehicle. It's comfortable and has almost all the luxury features our Cadillac had! If I had to say anything negative, it would be that it is a bit underpowered with the 2.5L compared to the 3.5 in the Caddy. But that isn't to say it's not peppy or can't easily get from an entry ramp speed of 45 to 75mph in less than 4 seconds. This was my first Buick and it will likely not be the last.
