The BMW X4 is a compact luxury crossover SUV manufactured by BMW since 2014. It is marketed as a sports activity coupé (SAC), the second model from BMW marketed as such after the X6, and features styling elements and the roofline of a traditional two-door coupé. The X4 is widely considered as a "coupé" version of the X3, trading its practicality with a sloping rear roof which offers a sportier styling.
First generation (F26; 2014)
The first-generation X4 was unveiled at the 2014 New York International Auto Show, followed by the 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2014, and at the 22nd Auto Mobil International Leipzig 2014. Early models included xDrive20i, xDrive28i, xDrive35i, xDrive20d, xDrive30d, and xDrive35d.
The M Performance M40i model was announced in 2015. It was officially revealed at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, and produces 265 kW (355 hp) and 465 N⋅m (343 lb⋅ft) from its turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. It has a 0–100 km/h (62 mph) time of 4.7 seconds. It went on sale from February 2016.

- Consequence: An internal transmission leak can result in a vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
- Remedy: Dealers will replace the transmission mechatronics unit, free of charge. All of the vehicle population for this recall have been repaired. Owner notification letters were not mailed. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
- Consequence: The incorrectly positioned license plate lamp cutouts could cause confusion to other drivers on the road, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will modify the rear license plate bracket, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on December 17, 2021. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

- Consequence: Incorrect tire size and pressure information could result in the wrong tires being installed, or improperly inflated tires, increasing the risk of a crash.

We had a 2014 X3. It was time to get a new car and we decided on a new X4. This SUV is amazing! Everything about it says 'nice' - enough power, beautiful interior, and just the right amenities.

I traded my GV70 for the X4 to escape the Genesis dealer's issues and the GV70's unreliability. Although the X4 is not as flashy or high-tech as the GV70, I feel more comfortable and in charge in a German car, particularly a BMW. It appears more elegant than a typical SUV and has all the features we require. The base engine is quite lively. This is one of my favorites in my 60-plus years of driving, and I plan to replace my 2022 with the '24 or '25 X4 before gasoline-powered vehicles are no longer available. My only regret is purchasing the over-hyped GV70 in the first place.

I love my car! It's actually my third BMW and it drives wonderfully. It's a very fun car to drive and it handles great. Plus, it's not too bad on gas.

For me, the X3 feels a bit too small, while the X5 feels heavy and bulky. The X4, on the other hand, is the perfect size with a great wide look. The car feels zippier than a standard SUV, and its unique look is really nice. Additionally, since it's not a popular model, it really stands out in the crowded field of X3s, X5s, and Ys.

Powerful and drives excellent! However, the trunk space may be a bit small for three golf bags.

I'm not a fan of the car, and I regret buying it. I take some responsibility for not researching enough beforehand. I was surprised to find out that the car had very few options, even after adding the M sport and premium packages. Unfortunately, it doesn't come with features like automatic high beams, cooled seats, and easy-exit. The brake pads are also quite soft, which results in dusty wheels after a car wash. The acceleration is not great either. Overall, it was a disappointing experience and I wouldn't buy this car again.
