- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2012-2013 BMW X3 xDrive28i, X3 xDrive35i, and M6 Convertible vehicles and 2013 M6 Coupe vehicles. The affected vehicles have a driver's frontal air bag inflator that may have been improperly welded.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator housing could separate from the base plate and result in metal striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's front air bag module, free of charge. The recall began October 6, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I absolutely love my 2011 2nd gen BMW X3 SUV! In my opinion, it outperforms the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC of their respective generations. The straight 6 turbo engine is unmatched in terms of performance and efficiency compared to the V6 engines of Audi and Mercedes. While the Mercedes comes close in refinement and comfort, the X3's cargo area is larger than the Audi's. The engine's exhaust note is also incredibly impressive and puts some sports sedans to shame. The X3's high perched seating position and larger all-round glass area make it very easy to drive compared to other SUVs. I was also pleased with the crash protection when my pregnant wife was rear-ended in it and came out unscathed. The maintenance cost is also lower than some Japanese brands. The only downsides I have experienced are that the suspension can be a bit too taught on some occasions, causing some jarring on sharp bumps, and the placement of the steering wheel heater switch on the steering column makes it difficult to see the visual light indicator. Overall, I highly recommend the X3 and have only spent less than $2000 in repairs over the 9 years of ownership.

This SUV is really great! It has excellent visibility, great looks, a strong powertrain, and is extremely functional. The in-line six cylinder engine is very reliable and powerful. There were only two notable repairs: the replacement of the water pump and supply/return hoses at 99,000 miles (which was covered under the extended 100k warranty), and the replacement of the intake air valve actuators at 125,000 miles. The normally scheduled maintenance, tires, and brakes have been the only other things needed. There are no oil leaks and the 8-speed transmission continues to shift strongly and crisply. The electronic all-wheel-drive system has had zero problems. We are getting ready to replace the struts, control arms, and tie rods at 150k. The only downside is that the squeaks and rattles are worse than expected, but we've had 20

Hello! Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We wanted to let you know that we have selected the X3 i2.8 at the end of our 2008 335 Convertible lease. We were a bit worried that the X3 would be a disappointment after driving the 335, but we were pleasantly surprised! The X3 is a much nicer car to live with, surprisingly smooth and agile. We chose the 2.8 because it has plenty of power for real-world driving and is smooth and sporty. The interior is quite spacious, especially the rear seat (compare it to the Mercedes GLK350).

I've owned this car for 11 months and put on 14200 miles. I've driven it in all four seasons and can confidently say that it's the best SUV I've ever driven. The performance is truly awesome. It's almost like BMW built this car to mirror your mood. If you slam on the gas, it's incredibly fast with accurate handling control (17mpg). My friends have even noticed a big difference in my driving style. But if you drive it slow, you can get the best possible mileage (31 mpg). I once drove 270 miles non-stop and still felt fresh when I got out of the car. And if you opt for the Premium Audio, it's worth every penny. Trust me, if you get this car from a reputable dealer, you won't be disappointed.

This car is the ultimate driving machine that will take you anywhere you need to go, and it will add a knowing chuckle to your urban life. It's spacious enough to comfortably accommodate four adults with a child seat in the middle and a dog in the back, making it perfect for a wine-tasting trip outside the city. Despite its size, it's still small enough to fit into a parking spot between two curb cutouts. The car's shape is short, wide, and tall, making it perfect for a variety of terrains. After a successful wine excursion, you can test your luck in the mountains and take a 600-mile road trip camping around the state. This car is as fast as any vehicle on the open road, and it's sure to put a smile on your face. Try driving 40 miles of winding, narrow, potholed back roads going 40-50mph, which would be crushingly fast and scary in your Subaru, but feels so sublime and calm in this beast that the dog remains asleep and the wife is chatting and looking at her phone like nothing is happening - you're just laughing inside. After that, head up 3 miles of gnarly, washed-out, and rutted, steep backcountry dirt forestry roads - everyone is paying attention now, as the traction control quietly helps the 5000-pound behemoth on 45 series tires, up an 18-degree slope to the perfect campsite. The car is very capable off-road, has good clearance, but has almost no suspension travel, so it's not exactly a cushy ride. Spend a night under the stars using the relatively high flat open tailgate like a picnic table to prep and cook, and then head out the other side of the mountain range for some high-speed 110-130 MPH desert dueling with a Porsche. Crash a night in a hotel and then head back up boring I5, where the car settles down into a comfortable 90 MPH cruise. You can easily join the fastest-on-the-road left-lane group. Other experiences abound over time. You chuckle quietly as some kid in a Dodge muscle car noisily blasts by on a mountain pass, only to see them pump the brakes and get scared as you take the inside lane at 95 around a big G corner - that smooth engine and tight steering barely break a sweat.Occasionally, you might take a break from being a soccer parent and switch to sport mode to race a couple of motorcyclists. It's quite a thrill to pass them and accelerate from 40 to 80 mph in just 2 seconds, even uphill. The brakes are very reassuring, but the transmission is so clever that you hardly ever need to use them, even when driving aggressively. While it may not be a track car, who really enjoys driving those besides car reviewers? Try fitting your family or dog in one for a ski trip or hike. The ultimate driving machine is one that can go anywhere, do anything, and do it quickly, safely, comfortably, and with a lot of fun. And this car ticks all those boxes. For reference, we have the X3 M-Sport, which Edmunds does not list separately for some reason. It has different aerodynamics and a different wheel package with 19-inch wheels and 40-45 series tires that make a considerable difference when pushing its performance limits. It also has a bunch of M emblems that will make your neighbors curious. We've driven it for about 15k miles, and it's almost at 100k. It's been reliable, but like all BMWs of this age and mileage, it requires regular maintenance. The engine is very dependable, and we haven't had any issues with it. Some minor electronic problems have arisen, such as the tail light LED boards going bad and the heated passenger seats not working, but overall, it's well worth it. Just be prepared to spend around 2-3K a year on maintenance costs.

The vehicle is great when it works. However, I have had some major problems with my 2011 X3, which is less than 6 months old. These issues include: 1) an engine coolant leak with a cracked reservoir, which BMW initially claimed was normal but eventually repaired upon my insistence; 2) a broken cable that prevents the driver's door from opening; 3) excessive brake noise and squealing, which BMW also claimed was normal; 4) excessive wind noise due to poor outside door seals, which BMW again claimed was normal; 5) grinding window noise when closing/opening the window; 6) windshield wipers that do not rest in their low position, but instead sit up; and 7) a misaligned passenger's side door that stuck out, which BMW initially claimed was normal but eventually attempted to fix upon my insistence. Unfortunately, all parts take 2 weeks to come. I hope BMW can improve their quality control and customer service in the future.

I purchased a brand new 2011 BMW X3 XDrive 35i from Autorgemana in Medellin, Colombia, but unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. Firstly, the sunroof did not work and it took 6 months to replace everything. Although it still makes a clunking noise when it opens, I am grateful that it is now functioning. Secondly, the car shakes when I step on the brakes, and despite the dealer's efforts, they were unable to provide a permanent solution. They replaced all 4 disc brakes, pads and sensors, but the issue still persists. Thirdly, the headlights fog up inside even if it doesn't rain, and the dealer has been unable to figure out why this happens. They said it is normal, but it is still a bit frustrating. Lastly, the steering system was broken and it took 8 months to replace it after 3 visits to the shop. As I write this, my car is 14 months old, has 14,800 kms and is currently in the shop for the twelfth time. I named it St. Joseph because it goes from the shop to the house and the house to the shop. Despite these issues, I am hopeful that the dealer will be able to resolve them soon.

This car is unsafe and requires immediate attention. It has been towed to the dealer twice this week due to a drive train malfunction that caused the engine to quit and the steering column to lock up while driving. The dealer initially replaced the battery at a cost of over $700, but upon the second occurrence, they acknowledged an ignition coil failure and a service bulletin that had been issued. It is concerning that BMW was aware of this issue and did not issue a recall. This situation has the potential to result in a serious accident and legal action.

The car has only been driven for 300 miles, yet the battery has died three times. Despite the dealer's (Motorweks) claims that everything is according to specs and that the battery runs down due to all the electronics, I am not satisfied. I contacted BMW customer service, but they only sent me a standard statement about their brand. I believe that the electronics could be interlocked with the start switch so that they only run when the car is started. Can we explore this option further?

I purchased this car used from CarMax and opted for the MaxCare warranty. Unfortunately, after a year of use, the transmission malfunctioned and required a replacement, which came at a cost of $9000. Despite my warranty, MaxCare refused to cover the cost of a new transmission and instead offered a used one. The repair process took much longer than expected, causing me to pay for a rental car for an extended period of time. While MaxCare only covered 7 days of rental, I had to pay for the rest due to their fault. Initially, there was some disagreement between CarMax and the BMW dealer, but eventually, a supervisor was sent to resolve the issue. Although they tried to cut corners by offering a used transmission, I appreciate that they eventually resolved the issue. In the future, I will consider purchasing a CPO from Lexus, which is known for its reliability. While the BMW X3 is an excellent car, it has proven to be unreliable in my experience.
