The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.
The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after. M3 saloons were offered initially during the E36 (1994–1999) and E90 (2008–2012) generations. Since 2014, the coupé and convertible models have been rebranded as the 4 Series range, making the high-performance variant the M4. E30 generation (1986–1991)
The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring rules, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, and began production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in the coupé body style, but limited volumes of convertibles were also produced.
The front splitter, the rear apron, sill panels, as well as changes to the body in the area of the rear window (C-pillar) and the bootlid improved the aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened and the tailgate was made of light, glass-reinforced plastic raised by approximately 40 mm for better air flow. The changes over the rear of the car resulted in lower lift forces and better straight-line stability. In addition, the windscreen was glued in – not, as with the other E30 models, framed with a window rubber and piping. As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd=0.33 instead of Cd=0.38 as in the standard 3 Series. The only exterior body panels the regular 3 Series and the M3 shared were the bonnet, roof panel, and sunroof.
The brake calipers, discs and master cylinder were unique to the M3 model.
The transmission was a Getrag 265 5-speed manual. European models were outfitted with a dogleg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for fifth gear. North American models used a traditional shift pattern and had wider gear spacing with an overdriven fifth gear. A clutch-type limited-slip differential was standard equipment.
In 2004, Sports Car International named the E30 M3 number six on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In 2007, Automobile Magazine included the E30 M3 in their "5 greatest drivers cars of all time" under their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time.

- Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2000-2005 323iT, 325iT, 325xiT, 320i, 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 330i and 330xi and 2000-2006 323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, M3 Coupe, 323Cic, 325Cic, 330Cic, and M3 Convertible vehicles equipped with non-desiccated frontal Takata PSAN inflators and PSPI passenger frontal air bag inflators containing phase stabilized ammonium nitrate (PSAN) propellant that were used as interim remedy parts for previous Takata recalls. These inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling.
- Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.

This is a very special car. You see, I needed something bigger than the two-seater I was driving before but still wanted a lot of fun. And let me tell you, this car delivers. It has tons of performance, is very comfortable, and is loaded with convenience features. Mine has the SMG transmission, which is a hugely capable transmission that helps both in performance driving and in around-town traffic. I couldn't be happier with my choice.

My '04 M3 puts a magical smile on my face that is hard to put into words! To truly experience what this car delivers, you need to be either a gutsy driver or one of the screaming passengers! I had a blast at Laguna Seca Raceway, even though it took me some time to learn the SMG. If you want to know more about my M3, I suggest you check out the customer M3 reviews. In my opinion, this car is by far the best and scariest time in total control! It's the most fun you can have with your pants on! I have only made 4 mods to my M3, including racing bushings for suspension, -1 degree camber for handling, Cool Carbon brake pads for the track, and a K&N air filter. Other than that, it's completely stock. I can't wait to drive it again! You'll have to pry me out of the seat!

I have owned 58 cars, but this one is the very best. I first drove a friend's new one in 1994 and vowed I'd get one, one day. Well, I am fortunate to own such a magnificent beast! The grin factor is huge. I always enjoy starting her up, letting her warm up, and then giving more and more stick. And then there's still the Sport button - wow, what could a person want? It looks good in an understated way - just the way I like it. This is the best thing I ever did on the motoring side of things! I find myself wondering what I could replace it with, but nothing comes to mind!

Having owned Audi's and BMW x5,330d, I finally bought my m3. What a fantastic motor! The other day, I went to Manchester via the motorway and recorded 29.6 mpg at a steady 80-90 mph. This is, by a long way, the best car I have ever owned. It's an absolute pleasure to drive!

The BMW M3 boasts an impressive 333 HP and the beautiful SMG (Sequential Manual Gearbox) makes driving up mountain roads a breeze. With no need to worry about stepping on the clutch, the SMG makes gear changes feel like an automatic, while still allowing you to juice up the power like a Stake-Shift. It's a truly enjoyable and romantic car to drive, especially when passing by mountain sides. The only downside is the fuel economy, which could be improved to match that of a Camry. However, the car is already so great that you'll forget all about the fuel economy. I highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a thrilling driving experience.

This vehicle had a vibration in the front end since the day I took delivery. Despite spending 50+ days in the shop during that time, the problem could not be diagnosed and fixed. Unfortunately, both the dealer and the manufacturer were unable to test drive the vehicle over the speed limit, which made it difficult to identify the issue. It's important to note that the problem persisted at speeds of 120 km/hr and up. While my experience was not ideal, I hope that others have better luck with their BMWs and receive the satisfaction they deserve from their dealers. This was my first and last BMW.
