Bmw M3 problems

bmw logo

The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.

The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after. M3 saloons were offered initially during the E36 (1994–1999) and E90 (2008–2012) generations. Since 2014, the coupé and convertible models have been rebranded as the 4 Series range, making the high-performance variant the M4. Variants of the 3 Series since then have seen the M3 produced as a saloon, until 2020, when the M3 was produced as an estate (Touring) for the first time, alongside the saloon variant.

E30 generation (1986–1991)

The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring rules, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, and began production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in the coupé body style, but limited volumes of convertibles were also produced.

The front splitter, the rear apron, sill panels, as well as changes to the body in the area of the rear window (C-pillar) and the bootlid improved the aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened and the tailgate was made of light, glass-reinforced plastic raised by approximately 40 mm for better air flow. The changes over the rear of the car resulted in lower lift forces and better straight-line stability. In addition, the windscreen was glued in – not, as with the other E30 models, framed with a window rubber and piping. As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd=0.33 instead of Cd=0.38 as in the standard 3 Series. The only exterior body panels the regular 3 Series and the M3 shared were the bonnet, roof panel, and sunroof.

The brake calipers, discs and master cylinder were unique to the M3 model.

The transmission was a Getrag 265 5-speed manual. European models were outfitted with a dogleg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for fifth gear. North American models used a traditional shift pattern and had wider gear spacing with an overdriven fifth gear. A clutch-type limited-slip differential was standard equipment.

In 2004, Sports Car International named the E30 M3 number six on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In 2007, Automobile Magazine included the E30 M3 in their "5 greatest drivers cars of all time" under their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time.

Common Bmw M3 problems

The BMW M3, known for its high performance and luxurious features, is not immune to certain common problems that can affect its reliability and overall driving experience.

  • Oil Leaks: Oil leaks are common in older BMWs, including the E36 M3. Leaks can occur from various sources, such as valve cover gaskets, oil filter housing gaskets, and oil pan gaskets. While not typically a major issue, these leaks can lead to a messy engine bay and reduced engine oil levels if left unaddressed. Routine inspections and maintenance can help prevent significant leaks.
  • Suspension Bushing Wear: As the BMW M3 ages, the suspension bushings can deteriorate, resulting in a less-than-ideal driving experience. Owners may notice increased body roll, vague steering, and uneven tire wear. Replacing worn bushings with upgraded polyurethane or solid metal alternatives can significantly improve handling and driving performance.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical issues can plague older BMWs, and the E36 M3 is no exception. Common problems include malfunctioning window regulators, faulty electrical connectors, and issues with the instrument cluster. Diagnosing and repairing these problems often require patience and a good understanding of the vehicle's electrical system.
  • Cooling System Problems: The BMW M3's cooling system is prone to issues, with stock plastic components such as the radiator neck, water pump impeller, and thermostat housing being prone to cracking and leaking over time. Regular coolant system maintenance and inspections are essential to keep your engine running cool and prevent overheating issues.
  • Rust: Like many cars of its era, the BMW M3 is susceptible to rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt. Regular rust prevention measures, such as undercoating and rust-proofing, can help extend the life of your BMW M3.

Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial for addressing these common issues and ensuring the longevity and reliability of your BMW M3.

  • Summary: The contact filed the complaint on behalf of her son who owned a 2013 BMW M3. The contact stated the vehicle was parked in a school parking lot, and the contact's son was sitting in the driver's seat of the vehicle when the vehicle was crashed into violently by four vehicles. The vehicle was damaged in the front end, passenger's side, and rear. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was condemned to total loss. The son was forced out of the vehicle by the attackers and the occupants of all 4 vehicles inflicted bodily harm in addition to the unknown injuries sustained due to the crash. The son ran into the highway where the ambulance provided medical attention. The police department arrived at the scene however the son had fled from the scene due to being fearful for his safety; the attackers provided details for the police report. The contact stated that none of the air bags were deployed and that the vehicle remained in her possession. • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
  • Date Complaint: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: WBS8M9C53J5
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: - Fuel tank started slowly leaking fuel after filling tank up to full, only discovered after driving back home and noticing a strong smell of fuel. Repair records are with BMW of Sherman Oaks, CA. - Leaking fuel caused my garage to fill with strong odor of fuel which is unsafe as well as posing an extremely dangerous fire hazard with the exposed fuel leaking to the ground.\ - BMW Dealership inspected, verified no foul play and repaired the faulty part. - A CEL was displayed after which I shortly made a service appointment at BMW. It wasn't until filling the tank to full that I noticed the issue. As myself and others suspect, the leak could be due to the material that was used to construct the fuel tank, which is a plastic welding. My car only had ~21,000 before experiencing this issue and the replacement tank is of the same exact kind, so I expect this issue was not remediated by BMW and will probably experience this again.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-21
  • Date Complaint: 2024-07-28
  • VIN: WBS8M9C56H5
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: My car was leaking fuel. This has been reported in numerous vehicles of the same make and model. There is an active warranty extension for this issue, I have attached the bulletin from BMW. My car is not covered for some reason although earlier years of my exact same car are covered. My car was was manufactured a few months after the latest covered date in the attached bulletin. This is a huge safety concern. There was always fuel dripping from my car. This resulted in puddles of fuel if my car was parked for longer than 30 mins. The slightest spark or someones cigarette could have lit up my entire vehicle in flames. Not only is it a safety concern, it should be an environmental concern as well. Everywhere I parked, fuel would be on the ground. Picture of my fuel tank attached. It is consistent with the issue in the bulletin. Photo is from the dealership that repaired my car.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-27
  • VIN: WBS8M9C5XJ5
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2018 M3 gas tank has cracked on the top and gas slushes around and leaks out. I filled up my tank and gas started leaking from the bottom. 2015-2016 BMW covers it but mine is made in 2017 has the same issue but no recall. This is very dangerous because it’s gas related.
Bmw M3 2008
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-24
  • Date Complaint: 2024-06-25
  • VIN: WBSVA93508E
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: During a regular fuel stop at a gas station, I noticed the central lock button nor the physical door hinge fail to operate to open the door for me to exit. The fuse for the central power door lock/unlock button blew out, completely disabling the interior door hinge mechanism. I got trapped inside but thankfully the power was still on and the rear doors remained unlocked. So, I lowered the driverside window and crawl outside. Then open the unlocked reer door to enter the vehicle from the back seat. Then located the fuse box, searched on the internet to itenfy the effected fuse, replaced damaged one to another fuse (dedicated to another function), temporarily replaced with the same ampage fuse. For my vehicle, there is no visible solution to enter the physical key to open the door from the outside that are typically found under the exterior door handle. If it wasn't for a combination of luck that the other door remained unlocked, had power to lower the window, have some knowledge of vehicle electrical system (fuse), and tolerable weather condition, I would've been stuck inside my car for indifinite time, or break the window to get to exit. I would testify that this is a serious safety concern the manufacturer should investigate and provide permanent resolution.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-18
  • Date Complaint: 2023-09-05
  • VIN: WBSDX9C56BE
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Starting from a traffic light at Woodlands Parkway and Gosling Road in the Woodlands, TX - Vehicle accelerated normally during shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd - Engine RPM went to ZERO and vehicle suddenly lost all power and died. There was a large Ford F150 behind the car. Thankfully, I was watching the tachometer and coasted to the shoulder before attempting to shift back to 2 and try a rolling start at which point vehicle came to an abrupt and sudden stop. Car was towed to an approved mechanic and was diagnosed as "another seized S65" engine. OPINION of Expert engine builders and bearing manufacturers is that the original BMW S65 bearing dimensions result in inadequate journal clearance and has been thoroughly documented. This, coupled with any potential "tolerance stacking" (- clearance) can result in a final bearing clearance which is significantly tighter than ideal and is the reason why we have seen engines fail after only a few thousand miles. This was half a second or less from being a fatal accident.
Bmw M3 2008
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-05
  • Date Complaint: 2023-09-05
  • VIN: WBSWL93528P
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: Passenger Seat Occupancy Sensor error displayed in vehicle information center. Warning restraint/Air Bag not functioning properly. This was taken to the BMW dealership for diagnosis, and it was determined the Passenger Occupancy Sensor has failed and needs to be replaced. There was no recall listed for this issue. I found there was a Service Information Bulletin from BMW acknowledging the issue SB-10056703-9690 with many affected models of vehicles, that has been updated in 2018 to include additional. It currently does not list the E93 model, but does list E90 and E91 and stated the affected component if electric adjustable seats is seat option code 459. My vehicle has the same option code as listed as the affected components. BMW extended warranty coverage for owners of vehicles adding additional models with E91 in 2018. They should cover over models with the affected component as it presents a safety issue and is a common failing part.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-27
  • VIN: WBS8M9C59J5
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel tank started leaking gasoline on the driver's side of the car. I only noticed because of the strong smell of gasoline and slipping a puddle of gas. I feel that my safety was at risk if I was to drive around with gasoline leaking out of the car that could have caused an explosion. I took the car to the dealership and the dealership will not cover the repair even though there is an emission warranty on the older versions of this car that have the same fuel tank issue. There was no warning light.
Bmw M3 2010
  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-18
  • Date Complaint: 2023-07-20
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: WBSWL9C58AP
  • Components: SEAT BELTS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Parked on a slight hill, shifted out of drive and applied the ebrake by pulling up firmly. Unbucked my seat belt, opened the door, and got out of the vehicle. Left the door open to go in my house, grab my wallet, and come back. The car stayed in neutral instead of shifting into park which should have happened but multiple components of the car failed to detect me exiting (door latch sendor, software, seat sensor, seat belt sensor). Leaving the car in neutral meant the parking brake was all that was available to hold the car. As it turns out, the electronic brake was not strong enough to do so, and the car rolled down the hill hitting another car, pushing that car into a structure and causing my car to be totaled. This never happened before but due to car not shifting into park with exiting, the vehicle became a rolling hazard putting all people and property around it at risk. I did not hear or see any warning messages as I had exited the car as I had always done previously. I should not have to turn off the car (press power on/off) to engage park or there should be a "park" button like most cars. Given there is no labeled park, the system gives you no indication of what steps you have to take if autopark doesn't engage. My car has been totaled and released to copart. It may be available for inspection from them.

  • Model: Bmw M3 2015
  • Report Received Date: 2024-04-24
  • Manufacturer: BMW of North America, LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:HEAD:INFLATOR
  • Summary: BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2014-2015 2 Series Coupe (228i, 228i xDrive, M235i), 3 Series Sedan (320i, 320i xDrive, 328i, 328i xDrive, 335i, 335i xDrive, M3, 328d, 328d xDrive), 4 Series Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive, M4), and 2015 4 Series Gran Coupe (428i, 428i xDrive, 435i, 435i xDrive) vehicles. The head air bag inflator may fail at the weld joint, which can cause gas to leak from the inflator or result in an inflator rupture.
  • Consequence: An inflator that ruptures may cause sharp metal fragments to enter or exit the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, an inflator that leaks gas may only partially inflate during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: Dealers will replace the head air bags, free of charge. Letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed June 20, 2024. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed the end of October 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

I've had this car for around 4 months now and was really excited about the purchase. At first, I absolutely loved it! During the break-in period, I made sure to drive it as prescribed and never pushed it too hard. After the break-in period, I only put 300 miles on the car (for a total of 1500 miles) before it started exhibiting some problems. Unfortunately, the most recent issue occurred this week with loss of power, slow acceleration, etc. It feels like I'm driving a Camry! I took it in for service, but they're having trouble finding the issue. If they can't resolve the issues, I'm worried I may have bought a lemon. I'm really disappointed in BMW and the car at the moment.

I noticed that the exhaust note is quite loud and raspy, which may not be to everyone's taste. Additionally, at lower speeds, there seems to be a bit of looseness in the gearbox, which can be concerning. While BMW claims that this is normal given the car's racecar heritage, I understand why some may find it off-putting. I've also had some issues with the stereo, specifically with speaker vibration, which has been difficult to resolve. While the car's performance is impressive, it may be beyond what most drivers can experience on the street. In my opinion, the 330ci may be a better option for those looking to save some money.

I really like this car! It has a razor-sharp body and is exactly what I was looking for in a sports car.

This vehicle had a vibration in the front end since the day I took delivery. Despite spending 50+ days in the shop during that time, the problem could not be diagnosed and fixed. Unfortunately, both the dealer and the manufacturer were unable to test drive the vehicle over the speed limit, which made it difficult to identify the issue. It's important to note that the problem persisted at speeds of 120 km/hr and up. While my experience was not ideal, I hope that others have better luck with their BMWs and receive the satisfaction they deserve from their dealers. This was my first and last BMW.

I absolutely adore this car! It has been with me since 2002, when I bought it used with only 15K miles on it. Since then, I have driven it over 90K miles and it has never once let me down. This car is so much fun to drive that I can't imagine ever settling for anything less. Even with 105K miles on the clock, it still feels as good as new. Of course, owning a car like this isn't exactly cheap - I get around 23 MPG in mixed city/hwy driving and the tires cost $1K every 25K miles. But honestly, who cares? This car has 4 doors, can haul anything I need it to, gets great gas mileage, and has been 100% reliable so far. Plus, it's an absolute joy to drive!

I took delivery of my M3 at the performance center and I am absolutely thrilled with the well-trained and professional staff there. The experience of driving M3's on the track and the delivery process was fantastic. This car has everything I could hope for: first-class design, awesome power, and it does everything with typical BMW style. Although my M3 is still relatively new to me, I get a thrill every time I drive it.

Over the past 4 years, I've had the pleasure of owning the e60 M5, 2007 M6 cabrio, and 2005 M3 cabrio. However, I must say that this car is built much better than all three of those. While the M6 and M5 are often considered in a class of their own, the M3 stands out for its agility and nimbleness, which gives the impression of being just as fast if not faster. The interior is similar to any new BMW car, not exceptional, but still better than the likes of MB or P-cars. The back seat is way better than the 911 p-car, but still leaves something to be desired. Overall, I believe this car offers great value and in today's day and age, it is affordable for the supercar-like performance and feel. Thumbs up!

The longevity of the ride is really important, unless there are major problems early on. I bought this 6-speed manual hardtop Convertible in 07/10 and it has provided me with years of pleasure, despite a few issues. Unfortunately, the navigation system has never been any good and has completely stopped working in the past 10k miles. It does what it wants to do, even when I tell it to look up an address or change stations. Additionally, the glove box won't open anymore, which is a shame. However, I can still get 22+ mpg on the highway and, although the car has lost some power, it still has enough get up and go to not be embarrassing. The handling is still excellent. If I had the chance, I would do it again 1000%. I will trade it in once its performance breaks down or I win the lottery :)

I absolutely love my '02 M3 MT coupe! Since the introduction of the e46 M3 and e39 M5, I've always wanted one and finally made the purchase in 2010. This car is a true performer with a perfectly balanced, high-revving and powerful engine that produces an amazing exhaust note. It handles great in the corners and stops on a dime. While other cars, including the M5, may be faster, this one is just a blast to drive every day. If you're considering owning an M BMW for the first time, it's important to note that maintenance costs can be 3X or more than non-M models. However, if that's not a problem, then you're going to love this car! I completely understand why Edmunds says this will be one of their favorites of all time. Although, I also understand why none of the editors bought it after the long-term test :)
