2011 Bmw M3 problems
The BMW M3 is a high-performance version of the BMW 3 Series, developed by BMW's in-house motorsport division, BMW M GmbH. M3 models have been produced for every generation of 3 Series since the E30 M3 was introduced in 1986.
The initial model was available in a coupé body style, with a convertible body style made available soon after. M3 saloons were offered initially during the E36 (1994–1999) and E90 (2008–2012) generations. Since 2014, the coupé and convertible models have been rebranded as the 4 Series range, making the high-performance variant the M4. Variants of the 3 Series since then have seen the M3 produced as a saloon, until 2020, when the M3 was produced as an estate (Touring) for the first time, alongside the saloon variant.
E30 generation (1986–1991)
The first BMW M3 was based on the E30 3 Series and was intended to be a homologation special to satisfy the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft and Group A Touring rules, which required a total of 5,000 cars to be built. It was presented to the public at the 1985 Frankfurt Motor Show, and began production from March 1986 to June 1991. The E30 M3 was mainly produced in the coupé body style, but limited volumes of convertibles were also produced.
The front splitter, the rear apron, sill panels, as well as changes to the body in the area of the rear window (C-pillar) and the bootlid improved the aerodynamics. For aerodynamic reasons, the rear window was flattened and the tailgate was made of light, glass-reinforced plastic raised by approximately 40 mm for better air flow. The changes over the rear of the car resulted in lower lift forces and better straight-line stability. In addition, the windscreen was glued in – not, as with the other E30 models, framed with a window rubber and piping. As a result, the M3 achieved a relatively low drag coefficient of Cd=0.33 instead of Cd=0.38 as in the standard 3 Series. The only exterior body panels the regular 3 Series and the M3 shared were the bonnet, roof panel, and sunroof.
The brake calipers, discs and master cylinder were unique to the M3 model.
The transmission was a Getrag 265 5-speed manual. European models were outfitted with a dogleg version with close ratios and a 1:1 ratio for fifth gear. North American models used a traditional shift pattern and had wider gear spacing with an overdriven fifth gear. A clutch-type limited-slip differential was standard equipment.
In 2004, Sports Car International named the E30 M3 number six on the list of Top Sports Cars of the 1980s. In 2007, Automobile Magazine included the E30 M3 in their "5 greatest drivers cars of all time" under their 25 Greatest Cars of All Time.

Common 2011 Bmw M3 problems
The BMW M3 2011 model is known for several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most severe issues is engine failure, which can occur around 54,000 miles, as reported by a 2012 BMW M3 owner.
Another common problem with the 2011 BMW M3 is electrical and stalling issues, which can cause the vehicle to die without warning, as reported by an affected owner who experienced this problem at around 29,000 miles.
The BMW M3's S65 V8 engine is also known for rod bearing problems, which can cause engine failure if not addressed
. In 2011, a switch was made to unleaded bearing in an attempt to resolve the issue, but it is not entirely clear if this resolved the issue completely
. Therefore, it is recommended to budget to have the rod bearings replaced, especially if the seller cannot prove that it has already been done
In addition to these issues, the BMW M3's throttle valve actuators can fail, which can be expensive to replace
. A faulty idle control valve (ICV) can also cause the engine to enter limp mode and illuminate the dash with a Check Engine Light and error messages.
Furthermore, the BMW M3's crankcase ventilation system can release built-up crankcase pressure, introducing oil and carbon particles into the intake, which can hurt performance and create buildup on intake valves.
Finally, the BMW M3's valve covers are known to leak oil, particularly from the valve covers where they meet the heads of the engine.
In conclusion, the BMW M3 2011 model is known for several common problems, including engine failure, electrical and stalling issues, rod bearing problems, throttle valve actuator failure, faulty idle control valves, and oil leaks from the valve covers. These issues can be expensive to repair, and it is recommended to budget for these repairs, especially if purchasing a used BMW M3.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-07-18
- VIN: WBSDX9C56BE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Starting from a traffic light at Woodlands Parkway and Gosling Road in the Woodlands, TX - Vehicle accelerated normally during shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. When shifting from 2nd to 3rd - Engine RPM went to ZERO and vehicle suddenly lost all power and died. There was a large Ford F150 behind the car. Thankfully, I was watching the tachometer and coasted to the shoulder before attempting to shift back to 2 and try a rolling start at which point vehicle came to an abrupt and sudden stop. Car was towed to an approved mechanic and was diagnosed as "another seized S65" engine. OPINION of Expert engine builders and bearing manufacturers is that the original BMW S65 bearing dimensions result in inadequate journal clearance and has been thoroughly documented. This, coupled with any potential "tolerance stacking" (- clearance) can result in a final bearing clearance which is significantly tighter than ideal and is the reason why we have seen engines fail after only a few thousand miles. This was half a second or less from being a fatal accident.

- Summary: BETWEEN 11/04/16 AND 11/08/16 I LEFT MY VEHICLE WITH REEVES BMW DEALERSHIP IN TAMPA, FL FOR THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL WHICH THEY TOLD ME THEY COMPLETED. I CONTINUED TO GET WARNING LETTERS FROM THE NHTSA FOR THIS RECALL AND RECENTLY I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A DIFFERENT BMW DEALERSHIP WHICH TOLD ME THE REEVES BMW DEALERSHIP REPORTED THEY COMPLETED THE WORK AND MY AIRBAG COULD NOT BE CHANGED UNDER THE RECALL. I TOOK MY AIRBAG OFF THE STEERING COLUMN AND PHOTOGRAPHED THE LABEL ON THE BACK WHICH SHOWS THE AIRBAG INSTALLED IN MY CAR WAS PRODUCED IN MAY 2010 WHICH IS PART OF THE TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL BATCH AND WAS PRIOR TO THE ASSEMBLY OF MY CAR AT THE FACTORY. I AM VERY ANGRY THIS RECALL WORK WAS NOT COMPLETED BY REEVES BMW DEALERSHIP AS I WAS TOLD AND THAT I HAVE BEEN PLACED AT UNNECESSARY RISK FOR THE PAST 4 YEARS. I WOULD LIKE ASSISTANCE IN HAVING THIS TAKATA AIRBAG RECALL COMPLETED SO THAT I AM NO LONGER AT RISK OF DEATH OR INJURY AS BMW APPARENTLY HAS MY VEHICLE INCORRECTLY MARKED OFF AS RECALL COMPLETED AND WILL NOT COMPLETE THE RECALL WORK. I'VE ATTACHED AN IMAGE OF THE LABEL ON THE AIRBAG IN MY CAR AND THE PAPERWORK FOR THE REPAIR WHICH WAS NOT DONE. THANK YOU FOR THE HELP.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-01-04
- VIN: WBSPM9C56BE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING MY LOW MILAGE 2011 BMW M3 (42K MILES) ON THE HIGHWAY, OUT OF NO WHERE, I NOTICED THE CAR DRIVING A LITTLE DIFFERENTLY AND SLIGHTLY SHAKING. THIS HAPPENED MOMENTS BEFORE I REACHED MY EXIT. I PULLED OVER AT A GAS STATION RIGHT OFF THE EXIT AND OPENED THE HOOD, THE ENGINE WAS MAKING A TINGING/SCRAPING NOISE WITH EACH REVOLUTION. I CLOSED IT UP, AND DROVE TO MY HOME WHICH WAS A COUPLE MINUTES AWAY. WHILE DRIVING, THE NOISE WAS HAPPENING MORE IN LOWER GEARS. WHEN I GOT HOME, I LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND SAW IT WAS LEAKING OIL, AND STILL MAKING THE NOISE. AFTER SOME INVESTIGATION, I LEARNED THE ROD BEARINGS IN THE ENGINE HAD FAILED, RESULTING IN COMPLETE ENGINE FAILURE. I PURCHASED THE CAR FROM AN AUTHORIZED BMW STORE AT 38K MILES IN MAY OF 2017, I ALWAYS SERVICED IT AT MY LOCAL BMW STORE - THIS OCCURRED FEBRUARY 3RD, 2018. AFTER READING UP, I AM LEARNING THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE S65 ENGINES THAT ARE IN THIS MODEL OF M3'S. BMW HAS YET TO MAKE A RECALL, BUT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN, BUT SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE. I CAN'T AFFORD A NEW ENGINE (IT COSTS 30 SOMETHING THOUSAND DOLLARS, WHICH IS ALMOST AS MUCH AS I PAID FOR THE CAR), AND THE ENGINE CANNOT BE REPAIRED. I FEEL WRONGED BY BMW, AND ADVISE THE NHTSA TO URGE BMW TO RECALL THIS ENGINE TO SAVE FUTURE CUSTOMERS FROM CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-27
- VIN: WBSDX9C58BE
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: TAKATA RECALL BMW DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE HONORING THEIR RECALL OBLIGATION. I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION THAT THE PARTS ARE AVAILABLE DESPITE CONTACTING THE DEALER REPEATEDLY. BMW HAS BEEN PROMISING THE PARTS FOR OVER ONE YEAR NOW. I BELIEVE THEY ARE STALLING TO REDUCE THEIR COST DUE TO CARS FALLING OUT OF SERVICE FROM WRECKS ETC. THE DEALER ALSO REFUSES TO DISABLE THE AIRBAGS LEAVING BMW OWNERS NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE INHERENTLY DANGEROUS CARS. YET THEY CAN FIND ENOUGH AIRBAGS TO MANUFACTURE NEW VEHICLES. I KNOW THIS IS NOT A NEW PROBLEM BUT IF THE NHSTA CAN EXERT A LITTLE PRESSURE FOR THESE AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURERS TO EMPHASIZE REPAIRING THEIR POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CARS THE PUBLIC WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-12-20
- VIN: WBSPM9C59BE
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED ON A CALIFORNIA INTERSTATE, MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST FORWARD MOMENTUM, POWER BRAKES AND POWER STEERING. WHEN I LOOKED DOWN TO THE DASH, THE DCT TRANSMISSION HAD SHIFTED ITSELF TO NEUTRAL AND THE ENGINE WAS SHUT DOWN. I UNSUCCESSFULLY ATTEMPTED A RESTART AS I TRIED TO SAFELY MAKE MY WAY THROUGH THE RIGHT LANES OF TRAFFIC SO I COULD PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER. AFTER NARROWLY BEING HIT BY PASSING CARS, I MANAGED TO GET INTO THE RIGHT LANE AND COAST OFF A FREEWAY EXIT RAMP. THE CAR BECAME INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT TO STEER AND BRAKE. AS I TURNED ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, AS SOON AS I HIT 10MPH, THE CAR SUDDENLY PUT ITSELF IN PARK, CAUSING A JOLTING SENSATION AND AN ABRUPT, UNSAFE STOP. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT TURN OVER SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE BMW DEALERSHIP. THE NEXT MORNING I WAS ALERTED THAT THERE WERE METAL SHAVINGS IN THE OIL PAN AND THAT CYLINDER ONE HAD SEIZED DUE TO ROD BEARING FAILURE. THE ENGINE HAD 53,000 MILES WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THIS NECESSITATED A FULL ENGINE REPLACEMENT.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Summary: THE CAR WAS PARKED AT A FLAT SPACE PARKING LOT. WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE VEHICLE USING A FOB KEY, THE ALARM STARTED TO GO OFF. I WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCESS THE VEHICLE OTHER THAN USING A KEY BLADE TO OPEN THE DOOR MANUALLY, HOWEVER ALL SYSTEM WAS DEAD. I HAVE REPLACED THE FOB KEY BATTERY, CHECKED THE BATTERY STATUS, AND RAN THE ERROR CODE SYSTEM, BUT EVERYTHING WAS FINE. AFTER SOME RESEARCH, I'VE FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON THE SIMILAR MODELS (BMW 3 SERIES) FOR A FUSE BOX - BATTERY CONNECTION ISSUE. AND GIVING A GOOD PRESS TOWARDS THE FUSE BOX LOCATED IN THE GLOVE-BOX DID FIX THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY, HOWEVER THE ISSUE HAS KEPT HAPPENING SINCE THEN. 3 SERIES MANUFACTURED MARCH 2007 THROUGH JULY 2011 HAVE BEEN RECALLED DURING THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 13V044000. MY MODEL, M3, USES THE SAME DESIGN AND SAME PARTS AS 328I AND 335I FOR THE FUSE BOX AND BATTERY CONNECTION, AND THE SAME ISSUE HAS BEEN OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES NOT JUST TO ME BUT TO OTHER M3 MODELS, BUT THIS MODEL FOR SOME REASON HAS NOT BEEN INCLUDED THE PREVIOUS RECALL CAMPAIGN.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM

If you're looking for a car that offers a unique driving experience, the BMW is definitely worth considering. While it may not be the best choice for those who prioritize cargo space or fuel efficiency, it more than makes up for it with its exceptional performance. The car's powerful engine, responsive brakes, and sporty feel make it a joy to drive. Plus, with the ability to customize the power, suspension, and comfort settings, you can truly make it your own. It's hard to put into words just how amazing this vehicle is!

Living in S.Florida and having driven my interlagos blue e39 m5 for 7 yrs with awe and no complaints, I decided to add a younger sibling - an interlagos blue m3 convertible! Let me say this emphatically, the m3 convertible is an absolutely fantastic piece of automotive creation to drive! For those concerned by the critics' comparisons to the m3 coupe, have no worries, the two are just different animals! Here in the m3 convertible, you have the ultimate everyday chameleon. With the top up, you basically have the coupe's 98% equivalence, and with the top down, it's a head-turning topless supercar! If you are not a race track junkie and live in warm climes, this car cannot be beaten at its price point. Thanks M!!

Hey there! If you're a Porsche, Ferrari, or Maserati owner, have you ever considered driving an M3? You might be surprised to find that it's all the car you could ever want without going straight race car. BMW technology is exactly what they advertise - the ultimate driving machine!

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share with you my lifelong dream of owning an M3. It's been a dream of mine since I was just 7 years old! Over the years, the M3 has undergone many changes and improvements. This latest generation, however, has exceeded all expectations and set a new standard for luxury cars. The acceleration and handling are simply insane! But what's even more impressive is how comfortable it is to drive on a daily basis. The M3 has all the luxury features and technology you could ever ask for, and BMW has thought of just about everything. The interior is simple and spartan, yet classy and sporty. The new iDrive system in the '09 models is a huge improvement over the previous system -- it's very fast, much more user-friendly, and has many more features. I hope you get the chance to experience it for yourself!

I've only driven 1400 miles so far and haven't pushed the car too hard yet. The engine sounds fantastic, but the car isn't particularly fast. Although it turns a lot of heads, it's not the most comfortable car to drive. I'm looking forward to taking it out on the local track to see how it handles under pressure. Apart from the power mode setting, I can barely feel a difference between any of the other M settings. I'm hoping that with a little more time behind the wheel, I'll get more comfortable with it. We've had a number of other BMWs, but I still feel more at ease driving the X5 or 550i.
